Camp Observations
      #422706 - Sat Jul 26 2008 12:53 PM

Since we've been doing this for the past few years, thought we might as well get it going.

I was at morning practice today and i'll give you my thoughts.

QB- Anderson looked very sharp today, clearly the better of the two QB's. Brady didn't look all that great but, who knows, maybe he had an off day. Anderson looked like he was taking a lot of the zip off his balls and putting some more accuracy on it, espically in the short game.

RB-Lewis looks about the same as last year, which is good. Harrison is pretty clearly the 2nd best running back out there today, and seeing as how Wright didn't practice, that should be expected. I wouldn't be surprised if #34 makes the team...he's got something about him that makes you want to see more. Vickers looks good, still making solid blocks and makes the occasional catch. Charles Ali is a man beast when it comes to blocking, i've never seen anyone throw people around like him.

WR- BE looks...like BE, didn't drop a catchable pass all day but seemed to have problems with footing. Stallworth looks small to me, definately a change of pace in our WR core. Both Wilson and Kasper look like they are legit NFLers, wouldn't be shocked if Wilson makes the team and Kasper does not. Cribbs is still at least a couple of years away before he is an effective WR.

TE- Kellen didn't practice so i'll assume i'll see Grossi talking about how he is holding out tomorrow. Dinkins still has stone hands, and from what little I saw, Rucker looked good. #85, who was constantly lined up at TE, looked good as well.

O-line- Thomas and Steinbach are probably the most amazing O-linemen we've ever had. I've never seen someone so lean and small push people around like they do. Hank is Hank in that he is solid but has his hands full *i'll get to that later*. Hadnot looks ok, nothing amazing and Shaffer looks about the same as well. Looks like we'll see a lot of running to the left this year.

D-line- Shaun Smith loves to talk...and talk...and talk...and talk. He also got into a fight in drills between d-line and o-line. Didn't see what happened, but i'm sure Smith was talking trash to whoever it was. Shaun Rodgers is a small house. We aren't talking about Ted Washington size, we are talking wide not fat. It usually takes Steiny, Hank and Hadnot to move the man. Corey WIlliams, probably the least talked about new addition, is a VERY good player. He does a good job one on one and wouldn't be surprised to see him get a few sacks this year. Also of note, Chase Pittman looked great, big and strong. At one point he threw the LT aside and buried whoever it was running the ball to his side. Wouldn't be surprised if he made the team.

LB- Willie actually looked good, quick and smaller. In fact overall, i'd say that all the LB'ers this year look much more athletic than big. Andra Davis and DQ Jackson look about the same weight and boy do they pack a wallop. I believe it was Davis who gave someone a nice hit today, sending them flying into the sidelines. Wimbley looks about the same on run stopping, which is to say not good. He gets sealed so easy...he needs to work on that. Alex Hall is going to contribute to this team some day. He is almost as big as Wimbley and runs very well for his size. He has good instincts but needs some work. Peek was getting good pressure all day on the QB.

DB's- I didn't get to see much of them today, but one got burned deep by a Braylon to Anderson deep ball placed perfectly in the corner of the endzone. Other than that, I couldn't tell you much.

you had a good run Hank.

thanks for the insight...very appreciated!

Defense sounds like they're flying. AD lost weight and is exploding??? could be interesting...hope we don't regret opting out of his contract...lol Well in a way I hope we do cause that means he's studding out. Giving the interior room to roam and explode - priceless.

Shaun is a key move...its not the addition its the fact that he's one of a kind and we got him - hope Tucker utilizes him well!

I think I should explain myself here.

Davis is moving better than he did last year and he actually was knocking people on their butts today instead of the handslap you usually see from the players.

He didn't look slow and really unathletically large as he appeared last year.

Part of this could be because the LB's no longer have to carry an extra 15 LBS in their behind. Not having to take on lineman, who have a 5 yard head start, makes running around the field a hell of a lot easier.

None, zero, zilch nadda lol

Frankly the kid will probably beat out Peek and Orr and will split time with Willie McGeinist. Tremendous pass rushing skills and he is showing the ability to play the pass. Now if he can just get his run stuffing ability to catch up.

I'd put a lot of stock into the notion that AD is realizing that if he wants to start on a good team, he's gonna need to step it up. If he plays the way hes played his whole career he's just going to start on bad defenses.

I could see that if we dropped him, he could go start in Detroit or Arizona or Cincy, or KC or just some of those teams whose defenses are mediocre

He'll beat out Orr, because I barely noticed him out there...didn't seem to be much of a player. Possible Special Teams demon?

I think Peek v Hall is a good matchup, as right now they are pretty much the same player. I was thinking to myself today "Self, is this the year David McMillian is gone?" We shall see what they think.

Based on what I'm reading...

I'm REALLY excited about Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams. More specifically Rogers.

And in the backfield I'm excited about McDonald. His name has always been in the news for plays made. I'm hoping he's not "on and off" though, as in he gambles and gets burned.

I was at the Saturday morning practice as well, and will add a few thoughts. I'll be honest and say I mostly concentrated on the defense.

Ahtyba Rubin is a surprisingly lean guy for his size - he is listed as 330, but looks like he could easily add 20-30 more pounds.

Shaun Rogers is a beast - he went one-on-one with Eric Steinbach at one point and dominated him. Just came with a bull rush right through him. Very impressive.

During the one-on-ones, Shaun Smith and Hank Fraley got tangled up. Smith smacked Fraley in his helmet, and teammates had to come and break it up. No punches thrown. I asked Hank about it (the o-linemen were signing autographs) and he said "That's just training camp."

Surprisingly, one of our most fluid d-backs was Gary Baxter. He looked smooth during individual drills.

Without a doubt, one of the most impressive guys I saw was Alex Hall. Hall is listed 6'5", but I thought he was taller than that. He has got a phenomenal first step, and accelerates very quickly. I'm extremely high on him right now

Hubbard and Steptoe dropped passes.

One coach (it may have been Daisher, I can't confirm) called for the 2nd punt coverage team to come out on the field. Everyone on the team came out except for one player - Beau Bell. The coach laid into Bell as he was coming out - absolutely cussed him out. The crowd cheered after the coach exploded.

Yes, this was another thing I noticed in camp - the d-linemen were consistently in the backfield. They might not have gotten pressure every time, but certainly a change over what we've seen in the past.

That happened right in front of me actually. He called for the second team and Bell just kinda stood there, taking his time...he must not have heard that you do not cross Ted Dashier. I'm jealous.

I was so pumped to get to camp today until my daughter got sick. I could have left her at my mother-in-laws if I really wanted to, but because she's so difficult sometimes as far as eating and drinking, I felt uncomfortable doing that because she didn't want to drink anything and was crying and running a fever.

I took Monday off of work to go up to Berea just in case it would have rained today, or something else came up, and it did.

So I'll have to wait two more days until I can watch Shaun Rogers throwing people around.

If anyone caught Training Camp Daily tonight, Mary Kay had said Andra started following Jamal Lewis' tough offseason regimen to get into shape and shed pounds. That's probably where the difference is coming in.

She also said Jamal lost 20 pounds (at least that's what I swore I heard her say) which is a lot, and he still looks big and solid.

Me and my son were also at the morning session. We concentrated on the recievers and backs the most. I have to say that Lewis looks in prime condition. He is so quick to the hole it is amazing. The Oline is looking solid, but the DL is very noticible. Our Oline is a good one, but they got their hands full with the Dline. Rogers and Williams are both studs and I think the two Smiths are benefitting from this. Shaun and Robaire also look good. To me, I think Savage seems to have done for the defense just what he did for the offense last year.
As for the recievers, BE looks great,as usual. IMO Wilson is going to play alot this year, he and Kasper both look good to me. Kasper catches everything thrown at him. The guy who is a disappointment was Hubbard. He looks quick, but runs lousy routes and has stone hands. I had a guy behind me comment that he would beat out Wilson, for the life of me I can't see what made him think that way. Steptoe looks OK, but is small and IMO inconsistent. I thought Sanders looked decent also. I think the talent is there, but needs developement. I definately see Wilson and Kasper on the final roster though.
The RBs also looked good. Lewis as I said is going to be fantastic this year. I also think Harrison should see the field more. I noticed that they spread him wide a few times, him in space could be very interesting.Travis Thomas #34 looked very good to me also. He seems to catch the ball well out of the backfield, and runs with that forward lean of a power back. I hope they can keep him hidden somewhere for the future.
As for the QBs, Anderson seems to have been working on his short game and to me it's working. Quinn IMO is not impressive at all. His short game looks okay, but his long passes are ducks. Every pass I noticed that was wobbly or floating was from him. At one point, I think Dorsey's passes looked more crisp and tight. I was very surprised that Quinn has very little spin on his passes. I know it's early in camp, but he needs to work on his seem and sideline throws, IMO they reminded me alot of Frye.
My last thought is about the DBs. I think our corners are going to surprise many of the doubters, and I also believe Pool has stepped up big time. He and Jones could turn out to be a very good combination at safety. Jones, to me looks like one of the best in the league, I guess time will tell.

"He didn't look slow and really unathletically large as he appeared last year."

Sounds like my observations from your report: AD lost weight and is exploding -

Nas320 - yeah I read that from AD but he's the only one who got that big....he might be blaming it on the new DL vs the old DL - me I blame it on him getting a new contract and a good one from Savage then just getting FAT!!!

I don't see DQ or Leon losing 15 pounds.

AD has always been a good LB who just never crossed the line into consistent and dominant. He never had great side-line to side-line speed. But in the 3-4 that is one of the beauty of it...you need to have side-line to off tackle speed.

Hopefully taking the weight off and FOR THE FIRST TIME - be in PRIME condition we will see what we actually paid for when Savage n RAC had him signed to a nice extention (5 years) after the 05 season - Mid December 05. And after the 07 FAT version of AD forced us to renegotiate and Nix the contract, making this his CONTRACT SEASON and he goes on a rigorous conditioning program. So do we see the same from him after another signing bonus? AD the FAT? Can we trust him.

But its nice to know...08 we should see the best version of AD since we drafted him.

On Training Camp Daily (STO), our favorite PD columnist, Mary Kay Cabot said that Andra Davis and Jerome Harrison have been following Jamal Lewis' off-season workout regimen and it's been grueling. So I think perhaps that's why AD looks so svelt and in shape. I think everyone is expecting BIG things out of him this year with the beefed up d-line and the fact that he is the veteran leader of this defense, aside from Willie. I think we're gonna see an Andra Davis that we've never seen before, except maybe in flashes.

Is good to know that everyone who is reporting back is saying this. A huge step forward if it stays this way. Tightening up the DL is the best way to make every position behind them play better. And IMO, we have some good talent back there that is going to benefit big time.

Quote:

Seems to be the consensus early on. Glad Wilson finally is getting his crap together. With JJ out, we need a clutch 3rd down guy to go to. Kellen can be that guy, but it sounds like Kasper may be a nice fill in as well.

Excellent. One of his 2 biggest concerns.

I like the fact that our OL - considered by many to be one of the best in the game - is getting pushed around a little by the DL. I like it because I think it will make them even better. These battles will hopefully translate to the field.

It sounds to me right now that we could go into the season with a receiving corps of BE, Stallworth, JJ, Wilson, and Kasper. I'm starting to like the sound of that especially with the continuous reports that Wilson and Kasper are looking good. I'm intrigued by Wilson as in almost every single report you read on him over the last couple years says the same thing: 'the talent is there'.

I also think that our DBs are going to be better than everyone expects, but surprisingly, I think our LBs will be our downfall. I'm not encouraged right now by what I'm reading - or I should say what I'm not reading - as not much that I can gather is being written about them through the first few days of camp. No matter how good Joe is, I hate reading that he continuously holds his own against Wimbley. I believe Wimbley relies on his athleticism way too much. Is he not coachable? I wonder if Savage is beaming about Hall because he sees him as Wimbley's replacement and will let Wimbley walk after his contract is up?

I'm not hearing much on Jackson either. And I thought Bell would be an instant competitor to man one of the inside spots, but in Tucker's presser on the main site, he said he's still learning the system...which to me seemed to be a nice way to say 'he's not coming along like we had hoped right now'.

It's early, I know.

Quinn IMO is not impressive at all.

I've heard from Cribbs that he isn't the most impressive practice player. I'm not overly concerned. If he is not making the right reads then I would be.

Quote:

His short game looks okay, but his long passes are ducks. Every pass I noticed that was wobbly or floating was from him. At one point, I think Dorsey's passes looked more crisp and tight. I was very surprised that Quinn has very little spin on his passes. I know it's early in camp, but he needs to work on his seem and sideline throws, IMO they reminded me alot of Frye.

I've seen enough of Quinn passing to know he can make these throws well. I wonder if they are tinkering with his mechanics?

Quote:

I hope you are right. I'm not one of those guys who thinks he can't get much better. People claim he can't throw short because of things like mechanics and foot size. I do know how inportant good mechanics are, but that doesn't mean players can't overcome bad mechanics. Whether his mechanics have changed, or he has learned to adapt doesn't matter to me. That is as long as he is getting better.

A late round pick we used a pick from next year to move up and get. Bad hands and bad route running is a bad combo, no matter when he was drafted. It is early and he will get time to improve. One practice isn't enough to judge anyone by, and I know the poster also knows that. He was just giving his impression of one practice.

Thanks Nemy & Eryze, great stuff...

Reports on the D-line are awesome, they even stand out in the raw practice footage. Rogers is a beast and Williams, Robaire & Smith are really good, from all reports it's going to be great to see them dominating the LOS even against the best O-lines.

Then there's the reports of the running game doing really well yesterday, which is a testament to the O-line & Jamal. Seems he may be taking things even more seriously than last year, if that's possible. Hope Wright can get back out there, and it sounds like Harrison is coming along nicely.

Looks like Wilson and Kasper are going to be nice additions. Get well soon Joe.

Seems DA is doing well and BQ not so much. Could the DA/BQ chatter be put to rest for awhile? Nah... That's just crazy. Glad to hear DA is improving his short game. Give this guy a full repertoire, coupled with Chud the mad scientist and four/five play makers on the field, this offense could be amazing.

I'm excited to see the LB play this year, by all accounts there should be no excuses about the O-line needing to eat up blocks for these guys to be effective. They have been somewhat quiet it seems, other than Hall, who sounds like a find, a stud with a nose for the play. I know it's early, but he's making play from what we're hearing. A slimmer, trimmer Davis could be good too. Did see Joe T handling Wimbley on the footage... Didn't like hearing that Beau Bell needed an etiquette lesson from Ted Dasher.

(Coach interviews on the Home Page are interesting. You can tell they're pumped, and pumped that the players are pumped.)

I think we'll be okay at DB, barring any injuries, it's starting to look like we have a couple starters. Not hearing much about the 3rd CB battle. I think this is the year our safeties explode as a tandem. Sounds like Baxter is coming along nicely. Good for him.

I've heard good things about Vickers and Ali too, Heiden, Mr. How-Can-I-Help? They still seem to like Dinkins.

Most of all, everyone seems hungry... I think Williams said, "We're going to surprise a lot of people," the other day. The exact same thing Winslow said last year.

I love to see them make a statement, come out and blow up the first two games.

I think it's varying on the day and the person reporting it as well. Talking to my brother last night, he said he talked to someone who was there last week and said Quinn looked great. Then you hear reports that Quinn didn't look so hot this weekend, where DA was solid.

Who knows. I'll be there tomorrow, so I'll tell you the real scoop.

Maybe so, but I do remember the team asking his to gain weight...and when you are pretty beefy and near 30, you don't put that on all in muscle.

Back at weight, AD is a good player.

I was at the afternoon practice today. No pads this practice. I saw a few things that were pretty interesting

Braylon was catching the ball consistantly. He was catching everything thrown his way granted it wasn't anything to physical or anything. He made one spectacular catch on a ball thrown behind him where he tipped it with one hand reaching back and then grabbing it with that same hand to bring it in.

Brady Quinn was not throwing the ball consistently accurate. He failed to throw a catchable ball numerous times. He was told a couple times to take control on the field and to fix the problem before the snap. On a positive note he did sign autographs for quite some time when no one else was signing.

Paul Hubbard looked to be our tallest receiver. He was listed as 6'2 but he was taller than braylon when they were standing together. I didn't see anything too great from him. He seems kind of slim to by physical enough to go up for a deep ball but thats just my opinion.

Travis Wilson seems to get slower every year. He was slower than everyone else in all the drills and in and out of cuts during routes.

Rubin doesn't look like the 330lbs he is listed as. I didn't get to see a whole lot from the D line because it was mainly drills and they were on the opposite field. I could see Shaun Rogers perfectly clear from where i was sitting.

I didn't see Kevin Kasper at all today. I don't know what the deal is there.

Rucker didn't look 260lbs. Him standing next to Dinkins was a big difference in size.

Anderson looked pretty well today. Most of his passes were right on the mark.

Stallworth didn't participate in every drill but when he did he seemed to be quick with all of his cuts. He did bobble a few passes though if my memory serves me correctly.

Vickers had the day off.

Thats about it. I'll be there again tomorrow morning and will post an update later that day.

Nothing really to add to my brother's post. As he said, we didn't really get to see the defense at all. Tomorrow we will be watching them quite a bit. Hubbard was nearly as tall as Dinkins and if he could add some bulk could be a potential replacement for Joe J. Zastadil was booming the punts wiht consistency. Braylon was coming out acting like a leader. He was leading all the drills and was catching the ball with consistency.

Quinn was just off all day. He was missing his targets, and often it wasn't even close. DA on the other hand was throwing very well. It appeared that he was the leader on the team. After practice Quinn and Steve Sanders were working out together and Quinn was looking better then. DA was working out with Edwards and Stallworth.

I agree and second everything else in my brother's post... I think.

Thanks! You answered part of what I was wondering. One friend who has been to camp LOVED what he saw of BQ (but my friend is a certifiably insane NDame fan with little judgment and hates the Buckeyes. Not to worry, he is on profound amounts of medication and a telethon is under consideration as well). However, if DA actually develops a short passing game which Chud would adore, we could be tough for others to swallow.
Especially if that ChudMonster decides to rotate "skill packages" that would really force a defense to adjust to us. That doesn't happen much unless you hurt people offensively. But if he shows a creative variety mixed with a good vanilla groundpounding game, I would not want to prepare for us. I like these updates from camp; we aren't getting any TV coverage and rarely any newspaper because we live too close to the Cyncytucky River and TW Cable must have failed geography; I am in Ohio and can't get most Cleveland news here. Monopolies disgust me. Appreciating your reports, I am.
Go Browns!

Monday evening practice notes [Re: Bard Dawg]
      #423345 - Mon Jul 28 2008 11:59 PM

Just got back from camp for the afternoon session. I'll give some observations for those interested.

First of all, we were able to get into the VIP area, which was nice, but the offense and all of the team drills and 11 on 11 was all over on the field on the other side. So I won't have too many details on that stuff.

I did however have the Defensive drills as well as the OL/DL drills in front of me. So that is what I focused on the most. I did occasionally peek over onto the other side and tried to catch some action. There was a lot of cheering over there, so I'm guessing the offense was in sync and looking good.

Here's my observations:

1. DL - I wanted to focus on our 2 new big guys. Unfortunately, Corey Williams was nowhere to be seen. Any info? Hopefully he was just given the night off.

Rogers is not only huge, he's athletic and strong. He just basically pushed everyone back off the line easy. He looked athletic running and cutting around the tackling dummies.

Purcell made some nice moves, saw him get into the backfield. Once was against Sowells, so maybe it doesn't mean much....more on that next......

2. Isaac Sowells - yeah, that boy will get cut. It didn't matter who lined up against him in drills, he got beat. Starter or back up. At one point, a coach pulled him aside after getting beat, talked to him, and put him back in there instead of rotating them like they had been. He didn't fare any better. Committed too much to the outside, then got beat inside.Saw him just get beat straight up on the outside several times as well. (playing RT)

3. Didn't see much of the DBs. I watched some, but their drills weren't giving me much, so I focused more on the DL and LBs. I did see Mil'von James make a nice pick over on the other field.

4. Alex Hall - this kid has a LOT of potential. His frame is large. Looks very tall on the field. If this kid can learn, understand and adjust to the NFL, he could make quite a tandem opposite of Wimbley. He looks fast, got off the snap well. He looks like he can bulk up very easily and not lose anything. This kid could be the steal of the draft if he makes the jump. Nice job Phil. Nice job!

5. Speaking of Wimbley, that guy is one big muscle. Just totally ripped. Quick, explosive. Didn't see him using too many moves, though, and definitely didn't get past Joe Thomas. He actually walked over next to me after practice to his wife and new baby daughter. Was giving her little kisses. We was nice enough to give us some autographs when we was done. Super nice guy. Can't stress that enough. Just seems like a class act. Jason Wright came over with him, but he was also with family, and I didn't want to bother him. By the time they were done talking, Wright left, but Wimbley stayed for us.

6. Joe Thomas is a stud. Stood up everyone he faced. Nothing else I gotta say about the guy. Joe Thomas. Stud.

7. The QBs - yeah, I'm sure everyone wants to hear this.

Like I said, I was on the opposite side from the O and 11 on 11's, but I did peek over there. Plus when the ST took the field, the 3 QBs came over to our side and threw.

After practice, DA and Dorsey threw for a little while on our side with a few back up WRs. Well mostly Dorsey, not sure what DA was doing. Maybe going over plays, I dunno, but he mostly just watched, threw a pass here or there.

Quinn spent at least a half an hour after practice throwing with Sanders. I read that those 2 spend a lot of time after practice with each other on the field.

DA - from what I saw, his throws seemed to be on the mark. He completed most of what I watched of him. He made a great throw to Winslow for a TD downfield. He also was hitting everything short, which is a big plus for me. I did notice him twice hold on the ball for a while. One was to Braylon. Braylon looked open, but by the time he threw it, Braylon was covered and the pass was broken up. I also saw him throw a pick in the back of the endzone into what looked like heavy traffic. Overall, he looked pretty good.

Quinn - someone earlier in this thread ( I thought it was this one) said his balls were wobbly, not real tight. Not sure what's up iwth that, but everything I saw from him was nothing but a tight spiral. I saw him throw a couple poor passes low to the reciever. Saw him throw an absolute perfect pass to Harrison for a TD. Harrison came out of the backfield and up the sidelines. Quinn hit him perfectly, didn't even break stride, and went in untouched for 6. I did see him throw a pick I believe to McDonald, but wasn't able to see what happened. He seemed to get off the snap well, very fluid, seemed to make quick decisions.

He was throwing on the run real well when he was practicing over on our field. We look to be in great shape.

8. Jamal Lewis threw a TD pass to Kellen.

Toss right, ran out, then put one in Kellen's lap. It was a little bit of a rainbow, but Kellen was so wide open, it didn't matter. Kept both feet in on the side of the endzone for 6. The crowd got a kick outtta that one.

9. Gary Baxter was working as a safety as expected. Didn't focus much on him, but he didn't look like he had any problems. Ran well, smoothly. Good for him.

10. Wanted to check out our WR situation, but couldn't see much from our spot. I do not that I personally didn't see a drop, which is a good thing. Someone, I think Steptoe, made a nice sliding catch of a Quinn pass on the sideline on what looked to be an out route. Braylon made a heckuva grab. K2 snagged balls effortlessly from the automatic ball thrower (can't think of the technical name of it). That's about it.

11. Zastudil was booming the ball. Not much else to say about it.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. My first post got booted since it took me too long, so I think I forgot some stuff. Got to score autographs from Wimbley and Dorsey (tempted to sneak in a "go Bucks" but didn't ) Also, Quinn gave into the constantly call of the crowd and signed for about 10 minutes. The girl I was with was right in front of him, and I was a little bit down when personnel pulled him back insde. Oh well.

Hope that gave those who missed it some insight!

On my way home for the Indians game last night I drove by the training facility only to see that around 10:40 Joe Thomas leaving with hardly any more cars in the parking lot. He even stopped to sign some autographs for some kids who had obviously been hanging around the front entrance for players to leave.

My oldest brother was there for media day, but he was short on details when I was asking him about it. He talked more about the liners/sound bites he got from the players than anything

He's giving me his media guide though

This is the report from WTAM 1100

link

Day 7 of Training Camp
Tuesday 07-29-2008 6:03pm ET

  • No new news on the injured group of Steve Heiden, Corey Williams, Kevin Kasper, Seth McKinney, and Lawrence Vickers. All worked out with trainers.

  • Coach Crennel also gave Kellen Winslow and Shaun Rogers the day off to keep them fresh.

  • Usually with injuries in camp you worry a bit, but Crennel has made the injuries seem minimal. He has said that for the most part that the injuries are just the regular bumps and bruises that happen in camp.

  • A weird scheduling quirk has the Browns playing one game over the next 20 days. But the coaching staff likes this as they feel that the layoff will help prepare them for their goofy regular season schedule.

  • The team may have 20 days with one game, but will wrap the preseason with 3 games in 11 days.

  • Crennel and staff want to prepare the team for the odd quirks in the regular season by allowing them to find the best way to be prepared regardless when, where, and what time a game is set for.

  • Tuesday’s practice was basically Josh Cribbs day, as the offense rolled out many of the new tricks that they will incorporate this season with Cribbs.

  • As one writer said to me after about the 7th different gadget play of the day with Cribbs, “this is the reason Chudzinski has bags under his eyes.”

  • It will be interesting to see how much Cribbs will be used this season with the gadget plays. He had everything from direct snaps, reverses, fake reverses, him throwing passes, but my favorite had to be Cribbs in motion gets a reverse hand off and basically he ran the option play with Donte Stallworth trailing him. Look out NFL, Cribbs in open space with a trailer could be scary.

  • Cribbs came into camp weighing 230, with it all muscle in his upper body, but in just a week he has already dropped 8-10 pounds.

  • The Browns ended the team session of practice after Cribbs caught a perfect spiral over the middle from Brady Quinn and then Cribbs out run the secondary for 6. It was actually practice time for the 2 minute offense, but if you score on the first play who can complain?

I was wondering where Williams was yesterday. I never heard about any injury. Obviously nothing serious, but don't like to read it.

Oh man, that's awesome. Made me grin thinking about that one.

For those that read my recap from yesterday under the "Camp Notes" thread, Jamal Lewis threw a TD pass to Kellen yesterday. Could be the next L.T.

I found this about todays practice...

Link

Training Camp - July 31 - Wait a Sec on Brady Quinn
By George M. Thomas
Another hot and sultry day - reminiscent of summer days in the great state of Alabama - out at Berea today.

Just when Coach Romeo Crennel offers some praise for Brady Quinn, the Cleveland Browns second string quarterback goes out and has - shall we say - an uneven day. Looking at Quinn in the team's lone practice today it was obvious that the passer wasn't accurate on deep routes today, often overthrowing the ball.

Some of that can be attributed to blanket-like coverage of the Browns DBs on some occasions, but Quinn, for whatever reason, was off. To his credit, however, he spent a significant amount of time after practice throwing balls to a member of the Browns staff. Might he be pushing? Possibly.

But Quinn needs to learn something right now: for the time being, this isn't his team. No matter how much he and his legions of fans want it, it's not happening this year unless starter Derek Anderson starts to look like Spurgeon Wynn.

Speaking of Mr. Anderson….With wide receiver Donte Stallworth able to go full speed after a slight hamstring issue, he and Anderson seem to be developing the all-important sense of timing and chemistry. Anderson hit Stallworth on a nice bomb that the receiver laid out for drawing some serious applause from fans in attendance. Yes, it was that impressive.

That would be one of the few times that Browns defensive backs would get burned all day, however. For the most part they attacked the ball, slapping passes away and creating turnovers. Corner brothers Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald, the season's likely starters, draped themselves on receivers. McDonald had one sweet interception and dropped another. Wright proved consistent throughout.

Right now, McDonald's play gives Browns' management reason to hope that they won't end up with egg on their face for trading cornerback Leigh Bodden during the offseason. Of course, looking good in practice and in playing situations are two different situations.

Some stuff from the mainsite from yesterday.....

CAMPER OF THE DAY: Brad Cieslak is not the first name that comes to mind when thinking of Browns tight ends. But he's a hard worker who is trying to take the advantage of the additional reps he's getting in the continued absence of Steve Heiden because of a knee injury. He made probably the best catch of the day when he leaped to grab a pass from Ken Dorsey in the back right corner of the end zone. Brady Quinn and Cieslak also connected on a long one down the middle. Plays like that really help his cause.

OTHER PLAYS OF THE DAY: Quinn threw to wide receiver Steve Sanders up the right sideline. It turned into a big gainer when cornerback Jereme Perry fell down. ... Running back Jason Wright caught a touchdown pass from Quinn on a short slant route. ... Quinn lobbed the ball to wide-open rookie tight end Martin Rucker, who rumbled for a score. ... Anderson made a perfect throw to wide receiver Donte Stallworth on a go route down the right sideline for a score...Cornerback Brandon McDonald intercepted an Anderson pass in the end zone that was intended for Edwards. ... Safety Nick Sorensen was beside himself when he dropped a sure interception off Anderson. ... Linebacker Shantee Orr rushed Quinn and caused the quarterback to hurry the throw. It was incomplete. ... Anderson's pass to Darnell Dinkins was tipped by the tight end and several defenders as they collided, and then Dinkins caught the rebound for a big gainer. ... Dave Zastudil punted well. He hit what might have been the highest kick he's ever had in his three years with the Browns. It could have brought rain.

JUST VISITING: Ricky Powers, who played briefly with the Browns in 1994 and '95, took in practice with his Akron (Ohio) Buchtel High School football team. He's not teaching them just football, but also about life. He's a mentor to many of those boys. He was one of the top running backs in the country while playing at Buchtel in the late 1980s, coming out the same year that Robert Smith came out of Euclid (Ohio) High. Powers went to Michigan, and Smith went to Ohio State. ... With the Arena Football League season over, Cleveland Gladiators president and CEO -- and former Browns quarterback -- Bernie Kosar has been stopping out at practice from time to time. He was there on Thursday. ... ESPN's Chris Mortensen, who has been tracking the Brett Favre saga, was there as well. ... Dan "Mad Rad" Radalovich, the animated Browns offensive line coach from 20 years ago, was a spectator.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder???

I read this today from Steve King staff writer Browns Younger Players anxious for Stadium practice.

It was incomplete. ... Anderson's pass to Darnell Dinkins was tipped by the tight end and several defenders as they collided, and then Dinkins caught the rebound for a big gainer. ...

from these accounts of the day it sounds like BQ did pretty good and DA suffered a bad day.

Who knows and who cares as long as the bad days don't grow worse and overall both show steady improvement. Its just practice. Some days are better than others.

There's a vid on the home page... from a quick glance, it looked like the O had a great day. BE, Stallworth, Wilson, Harrison, Cribbs all stood out. Cribbs ran the ball, looked like a reverse, made a nice gain. Wright picked off BQ down by the goal line.

Sunday August 3 Practice Notes... [Re: Clemdawg]
      #425504 - Sun Aug 03 2008 06:48 PM

Andre Knott's Report from Training Camp from WTAM 1100

Day 12 of Training Camp
Sunday 08-03-2008 5:56pm ET

- The Browns returned to practice after their first off day on Saturday with a new focus of preparing to actually play another team.

- The good news was that Corey Williams, Kevin Kasper, and Lawrence Vickers all returned from injury but where held back in team drills.

- Many have speculated about Williams shoulder injury but from everything I’ve gathered he is fine and the team just wants him ready for the opener against Dallas.

- With Kasper back it’s a big week for him and Travis Wilson. Kasper seemed to have a nice grip on the 3rd wide out until he hurt his hamstring. Since then Wilson has really taken off by catching everything in site. Should be fun to watch these two compete the next few weeks.

- On the bad side Kellen Winslow and Josh Cribbs both sat out practice with sore hamstrings, doesn’t sound serious at this point. And with as much as Cribbs does he deserves a practice off here and there.

- Gary Baxter did practice a little but his knees are still sore.

- Antwan Peek’s surgery went well and the team still has him returning for week 1.

- Crennel thought family night was a success with his young players having the opportunity to play in front of a crowd with the bright lights on them.

- The Browns have there only two a day of the week Monday morning starting at 8:45.

I'm sure he'll be OK physically, but I'm more concerned with all the reps he's been missing in camp. From what I've read he hasn't grasped his new role in the 3-4 as well as anticipated. I hope like hell he's been spending alot of time in the film room.

Here's to reports of a staph infection coming out soon.

Wait, if he's missing reps, how is it he's supposed to grasp anything? I'm confused...

Let the guy get back on the field, which I believe he was yesterday, and let's see how he does.

He was interviewed and there is tape on it at the Browns site.. he says that while he wasn't practicing, he was reading the books, in all the meetings and out on the field observing.. so while he hasn't had reps,, he's at least been involed from the mental side of it.

Day 13 of Training Camp
Monday 08-04-2008 3:55pm ET

-The Browns morning practice was spirited as the players practiced with pep in there step, most likely because they will play an actual opponent this week.

- Injury wise Corey Williams practiced in pretty much all the drills today as he is battling back from a shoulder injury. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does not play on Thursday.

- Kevin Kasper dressed but did not participate in team drills.

-Kellen Winslow and Josh Cribbs were both kept inside to have treatment on their sore hamstrings.

- Mike Adams has been an interesting guy to watch during camp as he is trying to be more then just a special team’s ace. He is covering slot receivers in the Browns sub defense packages and he thinks that he can help the defense with its lack of veteran corners.

-David McMillan is entering his 4th season in Cleveland and it’s his contract year. He realized that his clock is ticking and worked out this off season with Jamal Lewis and crew in Atlanta. McMillan has had flashes in pre season games over the past few seasons, but now has to be his time. He will receive a golden opportunity over the next few weeks as he has been lining up opposite Kamerion Wimbley in passing situations. With Antwan Peek out for the preseason McMillan will have to prove that he can rush the passer against team’s first unit. He told me this morning that he can still run a 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds.

- Plays of the day had to be Derek Anderson hooking up on 2 long bombs with Braylon Edwards. It’s scary to say this but these 2 have the chance to actually be better this year as they are working hard together to prove last year was not a fluke.

- Romeo Crennel said that come Thursday he will most likely play his starters for a quarter vs. the Jets.

- For fans that like to check out training camp in Berea, Tuesday will be the last practice until Saturday, with the team off on Wednesday and Friday.

I'm not a fan of the workout warrior, but a linebacker who can run a 4.4 40 can be on my team any day. That's a fast LB...be nice if he could develop into something.

He told me this morning that he can still run a 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds.

I'm not a fan of the workout warrior, but a linebacker who can run a 4.4 40 can be on my team any day. That's a fast LB...be nice if he could develop into something.

I would like to see him prove the fact that he can run a 4.4 40.

"I would like to see him prove the fact that he can run a 4.4 40."

You know...if McMillan really wants to be on this team and make the 53 Roster. All he has to do is show that 4.4 speed on a consistent basis during Kick-Off and other Special teams duties. I've seen a lot of him in the past in return and kick-off duty and not once did I say wow...look at that speed. Believe me when you see a 250+ body go 4.4 you take notice. I did take notice of CT several times on special teams...I did see McMillan's number out there on occasion but not once did I state...Darn that kid is fast!

All he has to do is bring that speed out of the Shorts and track and bring it to Special Teams and the kid has a roster spot!

Has anyone been going up there? We haven't had any updates in a while.

I did see from Training Camp Daily that they did a reverse pass with Winslow, who tossed a perfect TD pass to Lewis. Thought that was awesome. Every see a TE throw a TD pass before?????

This is how I see it playing out

There players are absolute locks: 30 (+1 pup)
QB- Anderson, Quinn
RB- Lewis
FB- Vickers
WR- Edwards, Stallworth, JJ (PUP), Cribbs
TE- Winslow
OL- Thomas, Steinbach, Fraley, Tucker, Shaffer, Hadnot
DL- Rogers, S. Smith, R. Smith, Williams
LB- Wimbley, Williams, Davis, Jackson, McG
CB- McDonald, Wright
S- Pool, Jones
ST- Zastudil, Dawson, Pontbriand

These players will likely make the team: 9
RB- Wright, Harrison
FB- Ali
WR- Wilson
TE- Rucker (I'm excluding Heiden just because im unsure of his injury extent)
OL- McKinney
LB- Bell, Peek
S- Adams

That leaves about 15-16 spots I see to be up for grabs

Wasn't there, but here are some camp notes:

CAMPER OF THE DAY: Rookie wide receiver Paul Hubbard is still more of a great athlete than a great football player right now. A track standout at Wisconsin, he simply hasn't played enough football yet to be proficient at it. But when the Browns were scouting him -- he was a sixth-round draft choice -- Pro Football Hall of Fame wideout Paul Warfield, a track star back in the day at Warren (Ohio) Harding High School and then Ohio State, put his stamp of approval on Hubbard. That's about as strong of an endorsement as a receiver can get. Hubbard will develop. He just needs some time to do so.

*

PLAYS OF THE DAY: Since he got the job, Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker has worked his players hard on ripping the ball out of the receiver's hands. It has become one of his mantras of camp. And it played out on Monday just like Tucker drew it up when free safety Brodney Pool tore a Brady Quinn pass out of the hands of strong-armed tight end Darnell Dinkins for an interception. "Coach Tuck preaches turnovers to us all the time," Pool said. "That's his thing." ... Cornerback Eric Wright made another nice defensive play when he broke up Quinn's quick hitch pass to wide receiver Travis Wilson. ... Who said the Browns' backup defensive backs can't play? Rookie Gerard Lawson looked good in breaking up a pass to wideout Steve Sanders. ... Inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson caught Jamal Lewis unaware and bounced the running back down as he tried unsuccessfully to catch a short pass over the middle from quarterback Derek Anderson ... Offensively, the most exciting play had tight end Kellen Winslow taking a couple steps back and catching a lateral pass from Anderson, then rolling right and lofting the ball to Lewis, who was all alone in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. ... The most electrifying offensive play was Anderson's pin-point 60-yard TD pass to wideout Donte Stallworth on a deep post route. ... Quinn hit running back Jerome Harrison with several passes for TDs in goal-line work. As he has done all camp, Harrison showed good hands and quick, nimble feet as he danced his way past defenders and into the end zone. ... Quinn threw to wide receiver Syndric Steptoe, who was wide open on a deep slant.

Hopefully he's also preached disguising blitzes and getting pressure on the QB!

Likely because he can't throw more than 10 yards.

I don't think anyone has ever doubted Harrison is very quick and a great pass-catcher. The big problem with him is his blocking. In this NFL, you can't have a RB who can't stop a blitzer or at least slow him down. Say what you will about Wright, he is a good blocker.

not worried about Harrison. Crennel trying to light a fire under Jerome so he'll block better. He's gonna make the final 53.

Quinn can heave it, he has a great arm, his only problem (not really a problem) is that he likes to dump it off instead of being aggressive and taking the risk of forcing a pass like Favre and Anderson do.

I hope that was sarcasm. Wouldn't be smart to throw more than 10 yards when you're on the goalline.

Quinn has a pretty strong arm. Why he gets a bad rap for that, I'm not sure. Maybe because DA has a canon?

Winslow gets bang out of teammate, practice
By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle

BEREA - The intensity of Wednesday's practice picked up when tight end Kellen Winslow and defensive back Travis Key collided.

The hit came after Winslow hauled in a pass from quarterback Derek Anderson. Key, who was signed earlier this week, didn't back down from the stronger Winslow. Key is listed at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, but it's obvious he's not that big.

Anderson connected with Winslow on the same pass pattern a couple of plays later. Key, who was in the area, faked a dive at Winslow.

"I like making plays," Winslow said of his intensity level. "It doesn't matter who it is. I'm a Hurricane. That's the way we play. I brought that to the Cleveland Browns. Ask any 'Cane out there. That's how we are. We just love to practice. It's nothing personal. He's my teammate. I just like to compete."

Winslow has missed quite a bit of practice time to nurse a sore hamstring. He sat out the preseason game against the New York Jets a week ago.

Winslow has been on the field more this week. It's not known if he'll play Monday when the Browns play at the New York Giants.

The first-team offense has been inconsistent with Winslow being in and out and receiver Braylon Edwards out with a cut on his right heel.

"We're a little bit frustrated right now," Winslow said. "We're trying to take the perfectionist attitude. We haven't done anything yet."

CHECKING IN: Edwards returned to the facility Tuesday for the first time since suffering the cut after practice last Saturday. He spent one night in the Cleveland Clinic and has been at home since being released.

The dressing on his foot was changed. There was no update on when he might return to practice.

INJURY REPORT: Rookie tight end Martin Rucker was scheduled for surgery today on a knee he twisted during practice last Monday. A MRI revealed a torn meniscus.

No timetable for his return has been set, but similar surgeries have normally resulted in a rehabilitation period of four to six weeks.

The Browns' top two draft choices - linebacker Beau Bell and Rucker - are now both out of action. Bell had surgery Aug. 7 to remove loose cartilage from behind a kneecap.

ROUGH ENDING: Crennel wasn't pleased with the way the first-team offense ended practice. Running a drill that simulated enough time for one play and a field-goal attempt, Anderson completed a short pass over the middle. The offense was slow getting off the field in time for the field-goal unit to get in place.

Crennel was visibly mad. He directed comments to Rip Scherer, assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.

"We really hadn't worked on that a whole lot," Crennel said. "You're changing people around and have different guys in the game. Sometimes backups have to go in. We didn't do a very good job on that. It was better that we discovered it in practice and not in a game."

EASY GOING: Some of the players stayed on the field talking to family members longer than normal after practice. The extra time was because Crennel canceled post-practice meetings when Phil Dawson kicked a 50-yard field goal to end practice Tuesday morning.

CAMPING OUT: It wasn't a good day for quarterback Brady Quinn. He fumbled a snap, which is something he seems to do once every session. He also had a pass tipped near the goal line. ... Running back Jamal Lewis threw an option pass to Travis Wilson for a touchdown. It wasn't the prettiest pass ever thrown. Lewis flipped the ball more than he threw it. ... Wilson made a nice move to shorten his route and get open under the coverage of Eric Wright and catch a pass from Anderson along the sideline. ... Safety Mike Adams made an excellent read to intercept an Anderson pass. Adams appears to have won the competition to be the nickel back.

http://www.tribtoday.com/page/content.detail/id/509294.html?nav=5024

Crennel upset with Wednesday's practice

BEREA - Browns coach Romeo Crennel wasn't pleased with Wednesday's practice.

In particular, he was upset with a situational drill near the end of the session that called for the offense to run one play and then hurry off the field to get the field-goal unit on for a last-second field goal. The first-team offense was slow to get off the field. The indecision caught the attention of Crennel, who voiced his displeasure to Rip Scherer, the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.

The second-team offense was more effective. Quarterback Brady Quinn completed a short pass to running back Jerome Harrison on a short crossing route. The field-goal unit hurried onto the field, and kicker Phil Dawson made a field goal of close to 50 yards.

Rookie tight end Martin Rucker was absent from the session. Rucker tore a meniscus in his knee Monday and will have surgery Thursday.

I always liked WInslows intensity,, I'd rather he kept his mouth shut more when he was first drafted, but his intensity on the field,, no question about it, the kid has drive..

Quote:

What's scary about that is that I think that Quinn is a throughbred, chomping at the bit to get out there and play and my fear is that because he isn't getting the opportunity, he may be losing concentration. That's scary to me..

For Winslow, one speed is enough
web page
Steve King, Staff Writer
08.13.2008

For Browns tight end Kellen Winslow, one of the guys who wear the pants on this team -- literally and figuratively -- there are not really any practices, only game readiness.

Winslow, one of the most fiery players the Browns have ever had, displayed that intensity on two back-to-back plays in Wednesday's training camp practice.

The first occurred as the Pro Bowler was coming across the middle to catch a pass. Newly-signed safety Travis Key was coming the other way to defend it. Winslow caught the ball and immediately ran into Key, sending both players sprawling.

As if Winslow ever needs his battery charged, that play seemed to get him going.

"I was mad before that play happened," Winslow said afterward. "I wasn't in the groove."

But maybe he got into the groove on the next play. He caught a pass down the sideline as Key approached. Winslow saw Key coming, and Key ended up tumbling to avoid a collision.

"I was thinking about stripping the ball," Key said. "But then I realized that wasn't a good idea."

He wasn't going to get it without a heck of a fight.

The intensity is second nature to Winslow, who remains a bit hobbled with a hamstringproblem that kept him out of last Thursday night's 24-20 loss to the New York Jets in the preseason opener. He is not sure if he'll play when the Browns travel to New York to meet the defending Super Bowl champion Giants on Monday Night Football.

"When the ball is in the air, I'm trying to make plays," Winslow said. "I'm not thinking about pain."

And anyway, no pain, no gain.

"I try to simulate as much of the game as possible," Winslow said. "I always love to compete."

It's why he wears full pads and game pants to every practice, even the ones where the dress of the day of his teammates includes shell pads and shorts. He said he started it last year.

Browns radio play-by-play announcer Jim Donovan remembers the opening preseason game at Philadelphia in 2006. Winslow had missed all of 2005 with injuries sustained in an offseason motorcycle accident, and all but the first two games of his rookie season of '04 with a broken leg.

So after all that, he was ready to go -- really ready to go.

"I got to the stadium about three hours before kickoff -- three hours before kickoff -- and K2 is fully dressed, pads, uniform, cleats, everything," Donovan said. "I couldn't believe it."

Believe it.

So what happened Wednesday, then, is nothing new for Winslow. It just happened to be the latest chapter, an extension of something that began a long time ago.

It began when Winslow was a kid growing up the son of a Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end by the same name, but Browns backup quarterback Ken Dorsey first encountered it when they were teammates together at the University of Miami.

"From his first day in college, he was all-go, full-speed, full-effort every day," Dorsey said. "He's just so much fun to be around because he brings so much passion and enthusiasm to the team."

Any team, including those Miami Hurricanes, who won one national championship and played in another national title game during his career there.

"I'm a Hurricane, and that's the way we play," Winslow said.

With plenty of spunk, just like this young team leader is getting his teammates in Cleveland to play.

"He competes out there every day," Dorsey said. "He's just a competitor. That's what he loves, competing. He's always competing. He wants the ball on every play."

Continued Dorsey, "Sure, K2 has some quirks, but he's the most loyal teammate you could ever have. When he comes out like this in practice, it makes everybody better -- not just the offense, but the defense as well, the whole team."

Practice? Don't use that word around Kellen Winslow.

The transfer of the ball from center to qb is pretty critical.

Got to get that right before you can do much else.

But you never know. Maybe the center is the problem.

Rough practice fires up Browns

Winslow's intensity energizes teammates at Berea training camp

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Thursday, Aug 14, 2008

BEREA: Some might say it was a routine play, but there is no such thing in Kellen Winslow's world.

The Browns' Pro Bowl tight end was running toward the right sideline after pulling in a pass from quarterback Derek Anderson when rookie safety Travis Key converged, hoping to force a fumble. The sound of their unintentional collision was game-worthy, but Winslow hung onto the ball.

Winslow was dressed in full uniform, as usual, even though the rest of his teammates were wearing shorts and shoulder pads. Key, a ball hawk from Michigan State generously listed at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, didn't sign with the Browns until Saturday night and was participating in his sixth practice.

Let it be said that the play, and the one that followed, served as Key's lesson on the Hurricane way.

''I'm a Hurricane and that's the way we play,'' said Winslow, the sixth overall pick in 2004 from the University of Miami. ''We just love to practice. It's nothing personal. He's my teammate. I just like to compete.''

Anderson went right back to Winslow with his next pass and Winslow made a move to stiff-arm Key, almost swatting him away like a fly. This time Key thought better of contact.

''I was going to try to strip
the ball out of his hand, but then I realized that probably wouldn't have been the smartest thing to do,'' Key said. ''I really wasn't thinking until the end, then I realized it wouldn't be a good idea to take any type of shot. So I kind of tucked and rolled.''

Two innocuous passes fired up the defense as one player yelled, ''Keep doing that.'' Linebacker Willie McGinest shouted: ''Somebody's been watching Hard Knocks.''

Ken Dorsey, Winslow's quarterback at Miami, loved getting another glimpse of the Winslow he's known for years.

''That's just Kellen. He brings so much energy and enthusiasm to practice and he wants the ball every single play,'' Dorsey said. ''The fact that he comes out like that in practice makes everybody better, offense and defense. It kind of sets a tone that we're out here to get things done.''

But what's going on in Berea isn't nearly as intense as what happened in Coral Gables, Fla., when Dorsey and Winslow starting hooking up in 2002. When the 'Canes won the national title in 2001, Winslow was sitting behind Jeremy Shockey and was one of four true freshmen to letter.

''The competition there was so huge,'' Dorsey remembered. ''Those guys were always chirping at each other, pushing each other. When you're going up against defensive backs, three out of four of them were first-round picks, actually including the nickel guy. We had two-minute drills where Kellen would catch the ball over two DBs for a touchdown and everybody goes crazy. That's where he gets all of it from.''

Winslow could argue that the defensive backs he's practicing against in Cleveland aren't nearly as talented as his teammates at Miami. During his college career, he learned to get open by facing six selected in the first round — Ed Reed, Phillip Buchanon, Mike Rumph, Sean Taylor, Antrel Rolle and Kelly Jennings. Not to mention linebackers D.J. Williams and Jonathan Vilma.

Dorsey just laughs at Winslow's quirk of coming out for practice every day in full pads, which began last season.

''I can't tell you why, but I can tell you that's how he practiced in college,'' Dorsey said. ''From the first day at Miami, everything he did was full speed, as hard as he could go, full effort. It might not be right. . . . It might be safer for him to have the pads on at all times.''

Whether his history of injuries has anything to do with it, Winslow explained his reasoning as, ''I try to simulate game conditions as much as possible.''

On Wednesday, Winslow said he was in a bad mood before his run-in with Key.

''That didn't get me riled up, I was mad before that,'' Winslow said. ''I wasn't in my groove. I made a good play and it got our teammates going, so it got me pumped up.''

Key said the two talked before practice ended, Winslow approaching him on the sideline. But Winslow may have walked off the field still reveling in the moment.

''It felt like a game,'' he said.

Surgery for Rucker

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said rookie tight end Martin Rucker will have arthroscopic knee surgery this morning, but did not give a timetable for his return. A Plain Dealer report said the fourth-round pick from Missouri will be out about six weeks after tearing his meniscus.

Rucker caught five passes for 70 yards in the preseason debut against the New York Jets.

Brownies

Mike Adams continues to stave off Terry Cousin for the nickel back role. Adams picked off an Anderson pass during a two-minute drill to set up a field goal. The first team got the job done on the next series. Brady Quinn also got the team in Phil Dawson's range on one of two chances, with his fourth-down pass on the first sailing past the fingertips of receiver Steve Sanders. . . . Today's practice is 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

I think the Browns PR rep told them the only things that they would grant interviews on yesterday were Winslow and his ferocious practice habits or the battle for the 9th OL spot on the roster.

Personally, I wish someone would have written about the competition between Sowells, Philip and Louis.

(note: I am not claiming to have inside knowledge on what the Browns PR rep actually noted to the media...merely being facetious)

Hopefully since it's the last day, the players will be in a good mood and sign a little more today. Maybe someone will sign my kid.

I played center long ag; snap problems were mine if not bringing it same way or ball not positioned right; was quebee problem if A) didn't lift enough or B) didn't ride forward with me at first before starting his route. We ALWAYS fixed it first; amazing what a meagre two or three hundred snaps can do to clear up STOOPID mistakes. Coaches were sincere when they assured us they were willing to do this as often as we felt it to be necessary to fix the problem. Coaches sure can be patient. No excuse for this beyond sandbox IMO.

Well, unfortunately I didn't get good seats, so I can't report much of anything from camp. Sat down, ate some pizza, and then the seats filled, so I sat there on the other field trying to catch the action.

The cool thing was pretty much the entire team stayed after to sign autographs. I did manage to get Fraley, Hadnot, Steptoe, Hall and Ortiz. Joe Thomas was about 10 feet from me, but ran off, and Harrison was right next to me, but started going down the line in the opposite direction unfortunately.

RAC was out signing as well, and Quinn, Cribbs, Donte, Winslow and Thomas were all down the line from where I was, but between the huge crowd, and trying to lug a cranky and tired 2 year old and her diaper bag in my arms, I didn't bother fighting the crowd and just took what I got.

Would have been nice to get further down and get those guys autographs.

I didn't see DA out there.... he may have been, but someone said he ran in. Kinda sucked since pretty much the whole team was signing and he left if he truly did run in right away.

Rough practice fires up Browns

Winslow's intensity energizes teammates at Berea training camp

He had a near brouhaha when I was there Tuesday as well......made a good catch on S Jones and then shoved the ball into Jones' face, who promptly swatted it right back at Winslow's mug. Winslow trotted right away after that exchange, he didn't want any part of Jones. That's fine and dandy in camp for fun and to get guys fired up, but DON'T be doing this in a game and get another taunting call!!! I loathe dumb penalties!

As far as autographs, I took a sharpie but only 3 guys signed that day and I didn't attempt any.....there was a boy about 10 years old talking to my buddy and I while Quinn was the last player on the field throwing passes to a rook (Leggett?) for about 25 minutes after practice ended. Finally Quinn came over to sign and this kid went off running to join the masses....I ran after him as he had said he didn't have a marker.....he finally stopped for a second so I could say "Here take mine!" and it was cool to see him finally make it through the crowd to get a sig.

Browns declare drama-free training camp over
8/16/2008, 7:55 p.m. EDT
The Associated Press

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns officially closed their training camp Saturday, although coach Romeo Crennel said the team will continue practicing under a camp-like schedule through the Aug. 28 preseason finale against Chicago.

Bleachers and hospitality tents were taken down minutes after the afternoon practice was completed, the last time this season fans will be allowed to watch the Browns undergo drills. But players will remain in the team hotel under curfew, Crennel said.

This training camp was different from its predecessors in two major ways. The Browns opened it with expectations of a playoff spot, and the only talk of a quarterback controversy was that there wasn't one.

Derek Anderson signed a three-year, $24 million deal in the offseason, but second-year man Brady Quinn held out hope that he could supplant Anderson. Instead, the front office and coaching staff made it clear Anderson was the starter.

He took nearly all the repetitions with the first-team offense, leaving Quinn throwing to guys who won't be in the league in two weeks. Despite loud screams from awe-struck teenage girls and the protests of grown men on talk radio, Quinn remains a distant No. 2 on the depth chart.

"He knows he's the guy in charge and he knows the system," Crennel said of Anderson. "He's more comfortable with the players that surround him, and that allows him to be better. He's been improving ever since camp started."

Rookie holdouts and season-ending injuries so common in past Cleveland camps were also missing this year. But they weren't missed. With 28 practices — including more than a half-dozen two-a-days over 3 1-2 weeks — camp may have been boring, but the Browns liked it that way.

"We didn't have no distractions," defensive end Robaire Smith said. "We all came in and worked hard. It's nothing but a plus for us heading into the season."

The Browns didn't have a draft pick in the top three rounds in April, so no one stayed away demanding millions.

Tight end Kellen Winslow and kick returner Joshua Cribbs, who are coming off Pro Bowl seasons, were open about their desire for sweeter contracts, but when the Browns said it's too early to talk with multiple years left on each deal, both practiced as hard as ever.

The Browns didn't avoid the injury bug completely, but the injuries were either loose knee cartilage, nagging hamstrings or one bloody heel.

Veteran linebacker Antwan Peek, rookie linebacker Beau Bell and rookie tight end Martin Rucker underwent arthroscopic knee surgeries to remove cartilage. Peek is progressing and is expected back for the regular-season opener Sept. 7 vs. Dallas.

Bell and Rucker could miss the first few weeks of the season. They weren't expected to play major roles, so they're susceptible to being placed on injured reserve if the team needs to clear a roster spot or two.

Pro Bowl receiver Braylon Edwards missed the last week of camp after fellow receiver Donte Stallworth accidentally stepped on his foot Aug. 9 while wearing cleats. Edwards was wearing socks, but no shoes. He received stitches and spent a night in the hospital and has remained at home while he recovers.

The Browns are confident Edwards will be back for the Sept. 7 opener against Dallas at Browns Stadium.

"Training camp got us ready for what's to come," safety Sean Jones said. "I just can't wait for the Cowboys."

Browns players in festive mood as camp closes to public
Sunday, August 17, 2008

BEREA The horn sounded one last time. The portion of training camp open to the public was over for 2008.

The short ride to the Sept. 7 opener against Dallas passed another milestone.

The next one comes at the Meadowlands, where a game against the Giants will take the Browns through the halfway point of their preseason schedule.

"We're gonna see where we are against the world champs," said safety Sean Jones, practically smacking his lips at the thought.

Saturday's last call for fans put players in a festive mood under a hot sun.

Slim cornerback Eric Wright ran out of the locker room and put a flying head lock on strongman Robaire Smith.

"You're lucky I like you," said Smith, aiming a mosquito-swat slap at Wright.

The young starting cornerbacks have been the life of the party throughout camp. Brandon McDonald strode out the door alongside quarterback Brady Quinn.

"Write this in your book," McDonald shouted to a writer. "I'm gonna pick No. 10 today."

During a light practice intended to ease into the Giants game, McDonald never got that interception.

"Quinn didn't come at me," McDonald protested.

After practice, the Browns spread out to sign autographs for another big crowd, this one surpassing 2,000. One by one, players filed back toward the locker room door. On the way, they signed an orange foam pad wrapped around a goal post — it will be sold for charity.

Long snapper Ryan Pontbriand did not sign his name, instead sketching a center looking between his legs. No. 64 wrote a 6 on one of the sketch's butt cheeks and a 4 on the other.

Amid the tension-relieving scenes, this camp left one paramount thought about the Browns: They are convinced they are a serious team.

To prove it, they will need a big contribution from new defensive lineman Shaun Rogers, who nursed camp aches and didn't practice Saturday but is expected to suit up Monday.

Obviously, the Browns also need their commitment to quarterback Derek Anderson to pan out.

Judging from camp reactions to the quarterbacks, the people still love Brady Quinn, but they are warming up to Anderson.

"Derek has settled into the role as a leader," running back Jason Wright observed. "He's growing in confidence every day ... and he was always very confident."

It doesn't hurt Anderson's confidence to have Pro Bowler Joe Thomas as his left tackle. Thomas and the offensive line had a quiet, efficient camp, during which right guard Ryan Tucker quietly worked his way back from a broken hip.

Crennel seemed to light up when he said Tucker finally made it out for some individual drills Saturday. He was a welcome sight in a camp nickeled and dimed to distraction by smaller injuries.

It's not unusual for players to hate camp, but Thomas is one of those football junkies who loves it.

"It is really nice to have all the fans out here cheering for you every day like it's a game day," Thomas said.

The soundtrack changes as they lock the gates to fans, but ...

"Camp is not over yet," Crennel said, with some attitude. "I'm not breaking camp for at least another week."

Insofar as a milestone was reached, and the fans made their last stand Saturday, is there anything Crennel really liked about this leg of camp?

"Well, I've got two good quarterbacks, and I've got a nice-looking defensive front," Crennel said.

There are three more weeks to fill in the rest of the details. Three weeks to Dallas.

'JOE J' SIGHTING

Romeo Crennel doesn't sound like a head coach who believes veteran wideout Joe Jurevicius' career is over.

"I know Joe will do everything he can to get back on the field," Crennel said. "I think he will be back. How long that's gonna take, who knows."

Jurevicius had four arthroscopic knee surgeries that knocked him out of training camp.

"He's in and working on his flexibility ... basically stretching and doing low-impact stuff," Crennel said. "He's making progress."

Jurevicius caught 50 passes in 2007. Kellen Winslow Jr. sees him as a vital part of the offense.

EXTRA POINTS

• Crennel said Shaun Rogers missed practice because "he's got several things that are a little sore." He did not elaborate but said, "I expect that he's gonna play (Monday night)."

• Crennel on whether safety Sean Jones is poised to have a big year: "I think so."

• Crennel said he plans to play starters "into the second quarter" against the Giants.

Not a bad thought.

Sometimes those old vets find a way out of camp and sometimes, the coaches find a way out for them.

Here, maybe that last clean out was to scrape out any remaining particles...done late enough so the guy didn't have to worry about camp and early enough he is pretty much good to go by week 1-2.
