I'm a big Moon fan. I like how he attacked the drums with reckless abandon rather than just played them. Many of the shenanigans he got involved in too make for good stories. I'm just sorry I wasn't alive to see him live during their heyday.

He is as technically difficult to follow as Peart. I don't do a terrible rendition of "Won't Get Fooled Again" but it is impossible, for me, to "no-miss" reproduce.

I think Frank Beard of ZZ Top should be on that list. Also guys like Ringo and Charlie Watts are not flashy, but very technically sound.
I played drums for 20 some years, and IMO solos don't make a good drummer. They are for show. Timing and rythym are what it is all about.
Peart is incredible in that sense, and Carl Palmer is probably moreso. Beard is very good also. Bonzo and Moon are in a class by them selves, that goes for Ginger Baker too.
.....Coke Escovito!

Ringo was a good drummer.
He just happened to be surrounded by 3 superstars who make him somewhat moot in the scheme of things.
It's hard to be noticed when John, Paul, and George are your band mates. It took George up until the end to be noticed as a pretty damn good musician/composer.
Really.

Ringo Starr shouldnt even be mentioned with the others in this thread.
I am shocked as hell that NOBODY has brought up Mitch Mitchell. He was a true innovator fusing jazz and rock and roll. The Experience easily rivals Cream as a power trio and in my mind surpasses them although it could be said that Cream was more successful at creating music that was more accessible to more people.

Not to be corrective, but I agree Ringo might not ever have been the technically "best" drummer around--he is still a fan "favorite" having played for The Beatles.
I have heard he is credited a lot for having developed/dramatized better use of the high-hat,...anybody else ever heard that ?
