Joe Haden signs
      #714925 - Sat Jul 31 2010 01:33 PM

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&hl=176477&id=5631

Quote:

Browns agreed to terms with No. 7 overall pick CB Joe Haden on a five-year, $50 million contract, including $26 million in guarantees.

Last year's seventh pick, Darrius Heyward-Bey, signed for $38.25 million over five years with $23.5 million guaranteed. Though he possesses lock-down potential as a cover corner, Haden is not without questions due to his lack of top-end speed. He'll enter camp behind Sheldon Brown, though the veteran could begin to see time at safety if Haden shows a quick learning curve.

Glad he's signed but wow on the contract. That's quite a raise over last seasons 7th.

That's everybody. Our secondary is so much better than last year's group already it's practically life-changing.

It's actually quite a bargain compared to the other contracts given out in the top ten.

We desperately need a lockout, unfortunately.

Quite a raise over last year's "irresponsible" signing by the Raiders.

Looking at this year .......

#4 (Williams, LT) got 6 years, $60 million with $36.75 million guaranteed.

#5 (Berry, S) got 6 years, $60 million, with $34 million guaranteed.

#7 gets 5 years, $50 million, with $23.5 million guaranteed.

Each works out to an average of $10 million per year ..... with Williams getting an average guaranteed amount of $6.123 million per year ...... Berry getting an average of $5.66 million guaranteed per year, and Haden receiving $4.7 per year in guarantees.

Look at #17, with a 5 year, $18.5 million with $10 million guaranteed.

Man the top of the draft can really handcuff a team if they miss.

While there is definitely a rather large increase over DHB's contract last year, cornerbacks are also paid at a higher premium than WR's are, so that should be expected.

This contract is pretty much what I expected, which is ridiculous.

The guaranteed money is what counts and he only got $2.5 million more than DHB.

Good deal. Glad to get him into camp in time for the 2nd practice.

Glad to hear it. I'm guessing he probably won't be at practice until tomorrow (Sunday), but I'm ok with that. I'd rather he didn't miss any practices, but one isn't a bad number to miss.

I'm just glad that we'll now be getting some actual Browns news, like how camp is going, position battles, etc. I was getting tired of the space fillers.

Just clicking. . .

The team gives a rookie who has never played a down in the NFL, and quite frankly some have doubts about, $23 millioin in guarenteed money. This is just the accepted norm for 1st round picks. However, the team fights for 2 years about giving it's star player, pro-bowler, only exceptionally talented individual, Josh Cribbs $7.5 million guarateed. They made him 'earn' it over and over again. Something is seriously wrong with the mindset in the NFL and the structure of salaries.

Yeah, but remember he's just a special teams player.

In this case, the Browns are captive to the system, but your point is a perfect illustration of why the system is broken.

I have absolutely NO IDEA who's mentoring you...But u need to find a new one...

There's a premium on Corners in FREE AGENCY...It has NOTHING to do with the draft...

Do u see those guarantees in Bey and Haden's contracts???...What's the increase???...It's 10%...Which is EXACTLY what it should be...

Ridiculous contract???...Yeah when u look at the 38.25M figure for Bey vs 50M for the same slot a year later...That's a CRAZY 30% increase...BUT...And u can thank the Senile One for this...That be Al Davis...There's nearly 16M in Incentives in Breys contract...That takes it to almost 54M...

Not so Ridiculous now is it???

There wasn't a corner premium paid....Look at this year's contracts:

4. Trent Williams OT Washington Signed Six years, $60 million ($36.75M guaranteed)
5. Eric Berry SS Kansas City Agreed to terms Six years, $60 million ($34M guaranteed)
6. Russell Okung OT Seattle Unsigned
7. Joe Haden CB Cleveland Unsigned
8. Rolando McClain LB Oakland Signed Five years, $40 million (about $23M guaranteed)

See 28 Mill Guaranteed fits between the 23M and 34 Mill guaranteed. Its was more about the contracts signed this year than last. Even his 50 mill is slightly more than McClain would average a year and exactly the same as Berry (10 mill per). Seriously dude I am willing to bet you 100 bucks that Okung gets around 30 mil + or - a mill guaranteed averaging about 10 mill per year and it will have nothing to do with an Offensive tackle premium and more to do with the contracts signed this year.

It has nothing to do with the draft... Really? Then explain why 60% of starting cornerbacks were drafted in the 1st two rounds.

Cornerback is a premium position, valued behind only left tackle, defensive end and quarterback. You are delusional if you don't realize the value of the position.

You are aware that the majority of those incentives in DHB's contract are virtually unattainable right? The agent has them thrown in so he can boast that the contract is bigger than it is. Haden's contract probably has some too.

I'm still struggling to find a point in your post. When I said it was ridiculous I was referring purely to how highly paid draft picks are, not the increase from year to year for the #7 pick.

The guaranteed money goes slot by slot, I agree. But if you look at the average per season (which is much less important) you can see the premium. Haden has the same amount a year as the number five and four picks, yet you say there is no premium.

I'm not saying it's a huge premium, but you can see it.

Not sure if anyone has noticed.. but there is nothing on the main site touting the signing of Haden. Anytime others know and are discussing an event, before a signing before the team announces it.. I tend to get a little worried...

IMO, Haden will eventually show us what a true shut down looks like. The days of Mcdonald and Poteat are over. Haden was ranked where he was for a reason, I think it won't be long before he shows what it was.

He agreed to terms but hadn't actually signed the deal yet. He's signed it since the story came out, per MKC's article from about a half hour ago.

Not surprised by the dollar figure given where we drafted him. I think Haden will work hard to show that he's worth every penny of that contract. The things I liked most about Haden pre-draft was that he showed a considerable work ethic and hunger to play the game. Now that he's where he is. I think he will work hard and he's got some great players to learn from in our "new" secondary. Haden is a signing that elicits a lot of excitement from me. I would love if he grew into a primary shut-down corner, with Eric Wright on the other side and if we could get even one good Safety back there (fingers crossed that Ward will emerge as a long-term solution at Safety) our Secondary will be very improved. In 2010 alone, our secondary should show improvements leaps and bounds from what it was in 09. I'm glad we got Haden signed, now lets get him up to speed and playing some football!

My point in the end is money is money. People have taken any and every opportunity to knock Haden and I have no doubts his detractors will start to use his contract in the same vein. In the end, I just expect Haden to put the effort in to show everyone he was worth taking on in the first round and that he's worth his contract. I wasn't trying to say that I felt his contract was out of line, my bad if it came across that way.

I should have clarified that my comment was just a comment in general and not directed at you, but my statement was intended to state that his contract is perfectly in line with what the others have gotten.

The total value is the max he can earn if he were to immediately stud-out and hit every escalator clause in the contract. That isn't very likely at all.
The more important number to look at is the guaranteed money part, and at $26 million, it is perfectly in line with those that signed just prior to him.

I have never seen Any Cornerback worth a contract of 10 Million A Year!

It is Ridiculous!

With stuff like this, With stuff like seeing Braylon Edwards in a Jets uniform on television yesterday, With stuff like a 9 game LOSING STREAK fresh in my memory from last season.

With the realization that the offensive skilled positions are SO BAD on this team, and this team Won't Make an Investment on the Offensive side of the ball.

When I realize that I just read they designated 50 Million Dollars to ONE Cornerback! I get so upset

It will be a long time before I spend ANY active money on the Browns.

7 million to Tim Couch in 99 was an OUTRAGE,. and He was a Quarterback!

This is Ridiculous, I have never seen a cornerback in history worrth 10 Million a year. Not any hall of famer at that position.

about a thousand car dealerships have closed in the last year and a half and the NFL wants to go on like it is sitting on a Gold Mine.
How many points do the Best Cornerbacks score in a year anyway?

THEY DON'T EVEN TOUCH THE BALL !

There are 11 guys on the field at one time per team, Not Just One!
How many people would show up in the stands just to watch Joe Haden?

It is not just Joe Haden, It is any draftpick

The Browns are going to Spend This Much Money on One Player on Defense.
Defense doesn't win Championships! Defense Doesn't win anything!
You can't win without an OFFENSE! You can't win a superbowl without an offense! The 85 Bears had a great year from their QB and their RB
The 00 Ravens had a 1200 yard rusher and an 800 yard rusher and a really good tight end. ( Shannon Sharpe) They had 3 players on the team named Lewis, 2 of them were outstanding on OFFENSE!

Given the current BAFFOONERY that is the system of slotting draft picks to contracts; then 8 million a year would have been Understandable.
Not Acceptable, but Understandable. 10 million is bull.

Don't waste it all in one day

I don't think the contracts these guys sign makes any fan very happy.. I know I look at it and say that all this means is the ticket prices will increase, the cost of buying anything with the NFL logo on it will increase.

But man,, watch that blood pressure.. I'd hate to see you blow a gasket over something you have absolutly no control over...

Well, I was going to , but it dawned on me you have not been a happy camper. How you can trash this signing is beyond me. I guess you wanted Spiller? instead? Yeah, waste a pick on a RB we already have ( Harrison).

Ya know, it took 5 min. to read what you wrote, that's 5 min I won't get back.
Thanks Alot!

I get the impression he just hates paying that kind of money to anybody... which is his perogative but it is what it is and somebody was going to get that money no matter who we drafted... If you have a thing against young unproven kids getting rich then the NFL is probably not the best place for you to invest a lot of time.

Well I agree wholeheartedly that rookie contracts are ridiculous. It makes 0 sense that a guy (even with great potential) gets to make double/triple what proven vets make before even taking a snap.

That's all well and good except nothing can be done about that until a rookie cap gets put into a new CBA (discussed ad nauseum in different threads). So I'm not sure wtf the point of that rant was?

What did he want us to do? Take a hard line and tell all our draft picks we weren't paying them more than vet min until they EARNED it? Good luck not signing any draft picks. That'll show them and help the team! Haden's contract was right in line with what the #7 pick should have gotten based on this years rookie contracts. There was absolutely nothing horrible about it.

Now if you want to talk about what the cap SHOULD BE for a rookie picked #7, then I'm all ears. Crying about it now though is completely and utterly pointless.

I was just really poking fun at the post. I think you said all that needs to be said about signing draft picks. It's not like we just dumped all this money on the kid just for the sake of giving somebody $$$. He just needs to use a lil common sense when it comes to draft picks.

If I see that kind of interception during game time, I will have no doubts about this pick.
