Since I have nothing better to do with my life (some summer...can't wait to get back to Athens). I figured I'd take a my shot at writing one of these "teaching" posts and see how it works.
1) Preseason record means absolute squat. This one is common knowledge but every year optimism gets the best of us. Somehow we think our 3rd string QB and practice squad receiver scoring a winning TD at the end of a preseason game is something to build on. Sure, it feels good to win and no one likes to lose, but let's pay attention to the starters first and foremost.
2) The preseason darkhorse standout means absolutely nothing. The chances of this being wrong are there, but the chances are very, VERY slim. I call this the CJ Jones/Brandon Rideau rule. Every year some of us pimp a guy for making plays in the preseason and in training camp, then once the season comes we never hear from them again. Chances are they won't even make the final roster. Don't be excited unless this player starts climbing the depth chart rapidly.
3) Don't panic about first round picks holding out until the first preseason game. BUT, Romeo's history with rookies suggests otherwise. Every year there's panic/borderline castration with our first round picks holding out of training camp. Missing a few days will not put them too far behind. This happens every year to all sorts of teams and it doesn't put the players THAT far behind. It's mostly media/team driven propaganda to put pressure on the player. Don't panic unless the player isn't in uniform for the first preseason game. Then...start panicking because he IS missing valuable time by then. Ideally the latest a player will hold out would be a week after camp starts, so they have a week to go over team practice, then have a week to prepare for the first preseason game.
4) Know the quality of the opponent. Beating up on the Lions doesn't mean much. Football is 80% mental, 40% physical. No matter how improved some teams appear to be, it takes awhile for them to gel and believe in themselves. Likewise, the opposite happens, the Bengals had all sorts of momentum from the previous season that carried over into the preseason where they just assaulted teams and carried into the season until teams stopped being scared of them.
5) There is no magic fix for line play or stopping the run. Stop thinking "Once we add in our wrinkles or once we gel we'll be much improved." It hasn't happened in the years I've started looking at the details of the game. If you're flat out getting beat, it's going to be a long year no matter how much you scheme. (see: Eagles and Bears preseason games last year)
6) Stop thinking we're "holding more back than other teams."
"We're holding back on D, we're staying vanilla, you'll see us improve greatly. Campo's D is gonna be amazing for us." EVERY team holds things back, but just because we look bad in our base packages doesn't mean we'll look good in our exotic packages, you have to walk before you can run. This is very similar to #5 but different.
7) Listen to reporters when they say we look good or look like junk. "Pete Prisco's such a moron, how can he NOT see that there's no covering the Four Deuces?" Let's not be in denial if on the training camp tours, reporters are saying we're looking good or struggling. Yes, things will look more crisp eventually, but that happens in ALL training camps.
Feel free to add to this list, I know there's more but I'm getting bored with it.

In order to write a teaching post, you should have actual knowledge in the subject...no one's gonna learn anything from this.
...hahaha...just messin' with you...

Maybe you should change the "us" and "we" to I.

Right now Quinn is 3rd string, or maybe 4th.

What are you talking about? Campo's D? Similar #5 but different?

I would just add to this the preseason game to give the most detailed look at is game 3. The starters play around a half, they start to play more than just the simple scheme stuff, and that's basically what will end up being the starting lineup on opening day, more than likely.

O man, I really shouldn't be writing but, letttttts goooooooo....
#1 Pre-season is absolutely just as important as the regular season.. A. Shows what needs fixed B. Shows what our back-ups have learned C. Shows what our starters DONT know D. Shows a preview of the season, ( what goes wrong, stays wrong )
#2 The preseason darkhorse standout means absolutely nothing A. This only means that the coaching doesn't realize the hidden talent B. The Coach has to play his favorites, and turns a cold shoulder C. See letter D from #1 D. Brandon McDonald
#3 Don't panic about first round picks holding out until the first preseason game. A. Do panic, because it isn't overrated. B. short and sweet, Learning to drive a 18 wheeler, but you missed the first 5 days, including safety check, tire pressure, airline pressure, lights, starting the engine, shifting, steering, downshift, acceleration, and all-of-a sudden, you POP into the seat, driving down I-90 at 65 MPH.. But, there is a crash 1/2 mile ahead of you.. Could you stop safely? Could you keep your truck in your lane? O, and it's raining..
#4. Know the quality of the opponent A. read ammo's ammo
#5.There is no magic fix for line play or stopping the run A. read ammo's ammo B. read D in #1
#6. Stop thinking we're "holding more back than other teams. A. I just dont understand it B. It's not holding back, it's just we aren't advanced to move up C. I hate Vanilla
#7. Listen to reporters when they say we look good or look like junk A. read ammo's ammo
#8. If you are at camp, yell at the players A. We need to get these guys fired up early. B. Intensity starts with the first whissle blow, and winners know this.
Your right, this is boring,

But for every CJ Jones/Brandon Rideau you get a Bodden/Cribbs. Not only did they make the team, when healthy they are big time contributers. Browns fans love these diamonds in the rough, who play with a lot of heart and make alot less money.

Great point.
They all sign on day 1. For those that are that hard up for an autograph, either find a way to attend on that day, or take your chances on another day, but don't come on here a day later, stating, "Winslow is a jerk, he wouldn't sign (blah, blah, blah)."
Another training camp hint - instead of parking at BW, park at the Berea rec center on Front St. and 3rd St. Saves you about an extra quarter mile walk.
If you're in the area in the evening, many of the players have been known to grab an adult beverage or two at Damons on Bagley and Engle (since they stay across the street). If they are at the bar, they are rather cordial with fans.
If you're looking for a place to chill at before or after an afternoon session, check out the new outdoor bar/patio at Vhooda on Bagley (formerly the Cooker). Huge, huge area outside they just built, good people watching and place to grab drinks.

I personally hope none of them are hanging in the bar during training camp.

Anyone know what time of day the training camp usually start? I'm thinking about going up there for the very first time for a camp.
And when will players sign autographs? Is it after the practice?
Can someone who's been there before give me a little information, much appreciated guys.

Tasty -
All info can be found in greater detail here.
If you want autographs...and this is coming from someone who goes every year, usually to 8-10 practices...be there on the first day (this Friday, the 27th). The schedule says from 3:30-5:30pm --- if it's anything like in years past, read that as extremely light drills from 3:30-4:30pm, then all of the players will scatter to the fences and sign for fans.
A couple of words of wisdom:
Get there early - especially if you're not familiar with the Berea area and where you will be parking. Be at either the Berea rec center lot, or at BW by 2:30-45pm for the first practice.
Again, if you're there for the autograph, and their last name is Winslow, Wimbley, Quinn, Thomas, Lewis, Edwards, Steinbach, McGinest, or Frye, you may want to narrow that list to a top 1-2. While I'm not going to say it's impossible, it's highly improbable that you will obtain autographs from all the top players - simply too big of a space (they use the majority of those 3-4 fields...), too many fans.
(Sidenote from above statement - no, don't expect Quinn or Thomas to even be there do to contract issues as I write this Monday morning)
And from one fan to another, treat the guys with some semblance of class and respect. I was there last year, near where Winslow was signing. 16-17 year old punk had to carry on about Ohio State winning Nat'l championship in '02 and how Miami sucks. While I personally agree with him, things said like this don't necessarily make Kellen want to stay in this area and sign (although to his credit, after taking it for a few minutes, he lifted his head, half serious/half joking said "who's saying that" then came back with a half serious/half joking one liner that seemed to shut the clown up).

I've never seen them get hammered (and I've seen them up there year after year during training camp time), but they're grown men, and if they want to chill and debrief over a few cocktails, I have no problem with it. Towards the end of camp, they usually have rookie skit night. I just happened to be at the bar at Damons around 5pm that evening last year. In walks Harrison, Wilson, Jackson, Sowells, Hamilton and maybe 1-2 others. Had to get a few drinks in them before that fraternal event. With that said and much to my surprise, those drinks consisted of Long Islands and Daqueri's. Extremely cordial with the few that recognized them, Harrison bought a few rounds for fans.

Thanks so much Beerdowner, a lot of good info there.
Wow, I may even be able to meet a couple of fellow dawtalkers, lol.
This whole thing sounds so fun, I can't wait. But then again the only time I will be available to go will be this Saturday, even if I don't get autographs, it will be a kick ass time.

I wanna add this one...
THE THIRD PRESEASON GAME IS THE BEST LOOK, BUT THE FIRST PRESEASON GAME WILL TELL US A METRIC TON.
This has happened with every 1st preseason game the past four years. The O-line looks like absolute rubbish, we go 3 and out and have a sack on our first series, in '05 the run D had holes as wide as the Grand Canyon to run through (in fact, it was the worst run D performance I had EVER seen). Yet we somehow don't panic and say we'll get it together come the end of the preseason. I'm through believing that unless Quinn is running the 1st team O in the first game (he won't).
Keep a close eye on how our 1st teamers look in those couple series they get to play. Hardly any of the wrinkles are put in, but it's just flat out talent vs. talent.
