What's more damaging to a team .....
Drafting a "bust" QB, or passing on a superstar, franchise QB?
A bust costs you a pick or 2. Passing on a franchise QB can cost you every year for a decade.
As far as Flynn ...... he has "Holcomb'ed". He had a great game. He wowed the crowd in a game or 2.
Is he another Aaron Rodgers? That's doubtful. He does not possess the same abilities that Rodgers has. Given that he is almost certainly not a QB on that level, then what happened during his latest game? Did the defense let down because they knew that they weren't facing Rodgers, and were facing a QB who has started less than a handful of games? This is almost certainly the case. How much did that effect the defensive play? It is rather obvious that it had a substantial impact. Whether Flynn is, or is not a quality QB, he is almost certainly not better than, and absolutely not that much better than Aaron Rodgers.
So, the question remains, if you toss out the highs and lows of Flynn's career, what are you left with? Not much. If there isn't much left, then what do you base a judgement on? A potential free agent destination doesn't have the day in/day out information on how Flynn did in daily practice. Without that ...... it's damn hard to know how he will do as a starter.
Now, let's say that there are 2 franchise QBs in this draft. Let's just suppose. The question then becomes, is it worth the risk of passing one up if you have the chance to get him, to get a guy who was a late round draft pick, and who has had very minimal exposure in the NFL?
To me, it's not worth the risk. The NFL is a QB league, and if you don't have a QB, you better be working on getting one. If you don't have a QB, and you have a chance to get a franchise QB and pass, well that's what creates front office turnover.
The Panthers could have said "You know, we don't have a lot of talent on our team, and we could trade down and pick up extra picks instead of drafting Newton. We took 2 QBs in last year's draft, the higher being a very high 2nd rounder. We have so many needs on our team that it doesn't make sense to take another QB in the 1st round."
I bet that they'd be kicking themselves today if they'd passed. Newton certainly has the look of a really special QB, one destined to lead his team to a Super Bowl.
You bring up Manning, and again, look at the difference between the Colts with Manning, and the Colts without Manning. I'll take Manning over any other 4 or 5 players on that team combined. He makes that much of a difference. In fact, this year proved that he makes all the difference.
In the end, it depends on how you look at the future. I don't consider the future "mortgaged" if you find a franchise QB who will be your guy for the next 12-15 years. I consider that a good, solid investment in the future, and one more likely to pay off than an investment in complimentary players.
