I remember seeing him on highlights and TV ... RIP Nick

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Didn't they call themselves the "No Name Defense"?

Yeah, 1972 Dolphins. I think NFL films did a really nice piece on them years ago.

Amazing how small (in comparison) they were.

I saw a special on Nick Buoniconti just a few months ago on HBO. I highly suggest anyone who gets a chance to see this take advantage of that opportunity. Nick had a full life as a player, an attorney as well as a television broadcaster. The end wasn't kind to Nick. But it seemed he kept his head up through it all.

The Many Lives of Nick Buoniconti

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Ditto.

Do today's players even finish college?

I think it's either rare or non existent.

Buoniconti not only got his bachelor's from Notre Dame, but got his law degree while he was playing.

His son's injury was a heart-breaker. (Buoniconti's son broke his neck making a tackle while at The Citadel and was left a quadriplegic in 1985)

I was in college at the time at Maryland. His gf lived in the dorm next to me and we were decent friends. She was devastated.

Nick was actually the one who talked her out of dropping out.

He was a helluva player. Undersized, but played w/passion and intelligence. He was the leader of the No Name Defense that went undefeated and won back-to-back Super Bowls.

He was also pretty good on TV and his efforts to fight paralysis after his son Mark was paralyzed was a noble and monumental accomplishment.

And damn, I'm getting old.
