Browns sign fullback Joe Kerridge

By Dan Labbe, cleveland.com
8/10/19

BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns signed fullback Joe Kerridge, the team announced on Saturday. Kerridge is six feet tall and weighs in at 246 pounds.

In his third NFL season, the University of Michigan product appeared in 12 games with the Packers in 2016 and 2017. He originally signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent in 2016 but failed to make the 53-man roster. He signed with the Packers on their practice squad that October and has bounced up and down for their practice squad to their active roster. He most recently spent part of 2018 on the Packers practice squad.

I don’t know who this guy is but being able to throw out of 21 personnel is a huge advantage in the NFL today.

I didn't even notice - did Orson Charles play with the ones vs. Washington?

I guess we have to give Orson some competition.

As for fullbacks in general, I am not a big fan but am OK with Charles. If the new guy is better, so be it, but I will root for the Georgia guy over the Michigan guy.

I hate admitting to ignorance, but would you mind explaining what "21 personnel" means?

Two backs, one tight end, two wide receivers

The first number is always the number of backs, the second number is always the number of tight ends, whatever is left over is how many wide receivers are on the field.

For example, 00 personnel would be five wide receivers, 20 would be two backs and three wide receivers, 11 would be one back, one tight end, and three wide receivers . . .

You mean the average player has to be able to count to five? Some of these guys need to stay in college longer.

The grouping consists of two running backs, a single tight end, and two wide receivers. This personnel set is often the first grouping installed during the pre-season. Other personnel groupings branch off of the 21, depending on the flexibility of the players utilized.

You can find a pretty good breakdown of all the other groupings there, too.

Dorsey and/or Wolf would know him it seems. I can tell we’re trying to be as versatile as possible. Good idea to keep tinkering

Being able to match up to opponents week to week instead of just running your stuff is a huge advantage.

The Rams were hugely successful last year but when they ran into teams that could stop what they did well (like in the Super Bowl) they had no chance. Last year the Rams played 11 personnel (one back, one tight end, three wide receivers) 77% of the time (by far the most in the NFL). While being very good at what you do is important, being one dimensional is also a huge problem.

Yeah, good way to put it. I think the sign of a good team is to beat other teams in different ways. Every game is its own entity. Just like Belichick believes too

Orson Charles has been cut, so this is a very interesting pick up.

Yeah, we’ve been shifting the backend of our TE/FB roster of late ... it seems like we aren’t happy with blocking (My guess at least) and want to be able to max protect to give Baker and the 2 stud WRs more time to connect
