I have a feeling the Browns are going to have a target on their backs all year long.

Quote:
Thomas says Ravens got tired of Browns hype

2:07 PM ET

Jamison HensleyESPN Staff Writer

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- When the Baltimore Ravens play the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, the defending AFC North champions will face the team that was hyped all offseason to supplant them.

The Browns, who are off to a disappointing 1-2 start, created national buzz when they made a flurry of offseason moves, including trading for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Cleveland was the betting favorite to win the division.

All of that talk wore thin on the Ravens, according to safety Earl Thomas.

"The media was talking about OBJ and that tandem and Baker Mayfield, the next savior," Thomas said Wednesday. "Then, to add on to that, Coach [John Harbaugh] talked about it a couple of times in meetings. So guys kind of got tired about it."

What was Harbaugh's message?

"He was just talking about what it looked like on paper," Thomas said. "And guys heard that, and basically, like, 'It sounds good, but we'll see.'"

At this year's NFL owners meetings in March, Harbaugh called the Browns "the most talented team in the division" -- a sentiment he said Wednesday was based on the preseason only.

"To me, that was an offseason question. I think at the time, they did have the most talent in the division," Harbaugh said during a conference call. "It was meant to be a compliment to the Browns organization and everything and the job they have done.

"... Now we are playing the season, and all of that stuff gets determined during the season. It is part of it now, but it is not really a time to rank that. I had not thought about it in those kind of terms. You are just trying to put a game plan together and do the best we can on Sunday."

The Browns have struggled, losing both of their home games. Cleveland is one game back of division-leading Baltimore (2-1). The teams split their two games last season.

"You have to play football at the end of the day," Ravens running back Mark Ingram said. "You can have as many players as you want to on paper, but if guys don't mesh and don't communicate well and play well together, it really doesn't mean anything. We're going to have to play them twice. That's why you line up and play football -- to settle the score."

Many believed this year's Browns team would end the 29-year drought of not winning a division title. The Browns were one of the most active teams this offseason. In addition to trading for Beckham, Cleveland added defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and defensive end Olivier Vernon.

"That's just what it is -- it's hype," Ravens defensive tackle Brandon Williams said. "You can't really buy into it. You don't really know what a team is until you see them on Sunday. When somebody gets hit in the mouth, what's the plan then?"

They are going to get the best from other teams and those teams will talk. The Browns can shut them up and prove the hype and all the big talk was justified, but they are going to have to start doing it on the field instead of microphones and cameras.

That’s the price of being media darlings, whether it is self-inflicted or not ... some teams either rise up to it and it makes them better ... and some teams fail and it crumbles embarrassingly.

Winning this next game would do a lot to quell the outside noise IMO

Every team has a target on their back. Each week the next team wants to beat them. That's a target. Who cares. If you want to win the big games to get to the ultimate prize you have to be able to beat everybody and not shy away from any team.

That said, I do think some players would be best to stay mum and just go out and compete and let their playing speak for them.

The Browns got hype because Vegas odds for them to win the SB got to some point.

You guys probably don't want to read the rest of my thoughts on this subject, (oh I set myself up on that one)

I'll try and move my brain forward, because I love the Browns! thumbsup

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

So why should it matter? The arena is now the field and wins and losses define you. Agree with Harbaugh on that point. The rest of it is noise. Just win, baby! Stop with the jawing and snappy explanations. You will have one game to define yourself.

Get right and bring your game.

The book is out on this offense. Disguised zone scheme with heavy pressure and we fold like a cheap suit. Until we adjust to that, we'll be eating crap all year.

yep, it’s gonna happen until we prove we can beat it

Baker has targets and now has added pressure to get them all touches. He's not handling that well enough. Simplify son.

and take care of their business on the field. Nobody has sympathy for you.

Let them target us.... we have to get used to it if we're going to lead the division. It comes with the territory if you want to be on top.

If we can't hold up under that pressure, we don't deserve to be on top.

It's beautiful in that whichever way it goes, it takes care of itself.

Agreed. Fresh out of pity & I have little tolerance for snappy explanations following a loss.

Strap it on and win. It's Ravenkiller week. A win would help us serve notice. A loss is an invite for more of the blather we have "enjoyed" in the past from the pigskin pundits who have put us down relentlessly.

Shut. Them. Up.

I agree that the book is out. But so far, the first few chapters don't read well.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Just as the target is being put on us, I got a feeling this locker room is getting tired of the trashing they are getting and the dissing from players on opposing teams. I think it works both ways. We will see.

This thread is about the target, the target won't be there if the record gets really bad like 1-7 or worse, good gosh!

Forget the off season, Time to be the Darlings of the actual season.

Good point Throw ... if we lose the next couple, we’ll be an after thought and back to the doldrums (much like 2008 IIRC)

I listened to Mark Schlereth's podcast this morning (well part of it) and he basically said he hopes the Browns lose all year, he hopes they get their asses kicked against the Ravens.. the reasons he cited are all of the off-season hype... that and evidently Baker made commercials that he's tired of. This bugs the crap out of me because Dorsey just went out and tried to make the team better, the "analysts" (like Schlereth) jumped on board and started feeding the hype and expectation machine about playoffs and even super bowls, which got a desperate fan base on board... and now that's a reason to root against them and hope they lose?

And Baker did commercials? Was he supposed to turn down the money? Seriously...

So somebody correct me if I'm wrong.. because I don't remember a whole lot of bragging and obnoxious predictions of greatness from the players or the staff.. In fact, I distinctly remember Freddie saying a number of times "At this point we are just a group of talented players, we haven't won anything yet"... am I missing something? Was anybody inside the organization running around making bold predictions of greatness? Because most of the comments and quotes I remember was just players who were excited to get at it...

Nope, you're not missing a thing.
None of the noise and hype came from inside that facility; it all came from the very same people now calling them overrated.

But, they're the media, that's their prerogative.

I think that some NFL players are much too worried about Social Media and spending too much time on it. I think they would be better off spending more time trying to improve their game rather than spending energy on worrying about what others are saying.

Thanks. Still miss reading his stuff. Wish he would get the Help from the Hereafter right this week for this game.

I am so tired of the Rats dumb blind luck burying us in the fourth quarter. And I love watching any Harbaugh loss myself.

Wow it takes a lot of energy to sit in a chair and read something and respond. With your thousands of posts on this site, you probably can't get anything done in your life. Not a knock on you, just using it as an example of thinking social media posts consume these guys life so much that they can't concentrate on anything else. It's kind of silly if you think about it.

It is not an insult, I thought I made that apparent. It was a comparison, not a bash. I should have just said I spend so much time on social media I can't think about anything else, I forgot haw sensitive you are.

Most of the people on the planet would be better off if they spent less time on social media and more time improving their own life. But it's a fact of life now and, especially these young guys, it's so ingrained in them that it's a part of who they are... In the end, it's no different than "Bulletin board material" from eras long ago, there is just a lot more of it..

I do agree that not everything said about you deserves a response and sometimes you just need to be able to pass it by and let it go..

When the Baltimore Ravens play the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, the defending AFC North champions will face the team that was hyped all offseason to supplant them.

Well we did just that and we did it at their HOUSE! Browns are in first in our Division! Woof Woof
