Cleveland Browns Pregame Scribbles: What does road record say about them?

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Scribbles in my notebook as the Cleveland Browns close out the 2019 season against the Cincinnati Bengals:

1. I didn’t even know the Browns had lost their last five road games until Freddie Kitchens mentioned it in a press conference this week. They opened the season with road victories over the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens. The high point of the season was that 40-25 victory in Baltimore, making the Browns 2-2.

2. Since that game in Baltimore, the Browns are 4-7. They have five road losses: San Francisco, New England, Denver, Pittsburgh and Arizona. If the Browns had won in Denver and Arizona (losing teams), they’d be 8-7 heading into this game with an outside shot at the playoffs.

3. What’s the point of discussing the road schedule? It goes to the heart of the Browns problems this season. To win on the road, you need toughness and discipline. Too often, the Browns have lacked both.

4. It should be humbling for the Browns to look at the standings and see they have the same 6-9 record as the Jets and Broncos, two teams expected to have big problems this season.

5. The Browns play the 1-14 Bengals today. Would you be surprised if they lost? Kitchens talked about wanting to end the season with a win on the road, partly to stop the streak. Captain Joel Bitonio discussed ending the season with a victory to have something positive to build on heading into 2020.

6. I don’t know if any of that matters to many players on the team. Several have been dealing with injuries all season. That includes Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. I expect Landry to play. He’s never missed a game in his six-year career.

7. If Beckham plays, it will be only the second time in his six-year career he’s appeared in all 16 games. The other was 2016. He played only 16 total games between 2017-18.

8. For what it’s worth, the Bengals had been set up to lose this season with an eye on the No. 1 pick. Even if they win this game, they will have the worst record in the NFL and a chance to grab LSU QB Joe Burrow.

9. This probably will be Andy Dalton’s last game with the Bengals. He has started for most of the last nine seasons. Five times, he led the Bengals to the playoffs. He has a year remaining on his contract, but could be traded as the Bengals turn to a rookie QB next season.

10. Bengals coach Zac Taylor told the media: “It’s a home game. We’ve only won one of them. We haven’t won a divisional game yet. You can end the season on a positive note... It’s a reward for hard work and a reward for the city. I know the city wants us to beat Cleveland, as they should...”

11. I don’t know if trying to win the final with a rookie head coach and Dalton possibly playing his last game has any special motivation for the Bengals. I do know they put up a decent fight losing 27-19 to the Browns in Cleveland on Dec. 8.

12. The Bengals have the second-lowest attendance in the NFL, an average of 47,096 per game. The Los Angeles Chargers are lower (25,393) but they are playing in a 27,000-seat stadium while waiting for their new facility to be built.

13. Meanwhile, the Browns sold out the entire home season (67,431 average) before the opening kickoff of 2019. Their fans saw the team finish with a 4-4 record at home. That’s down from a 5-3 home record in 2018.

14. I hate games like this because they feel like football funerals. 'Tis the season where the Browns celebrate Christmas and then comes the final game, often where the coach knows he’s likely to be fired. No playoffs, just another coaching search coming up.

15. My prediction: Bengals 22, Browns 19. A strange score for a strange game. My record picking the Browns is 10-5.
