AFC North watch: Ben Roethlisberger admits addiction to porn and alcohol

brownswire.usatoday.com

From time to time, we here at Browns Wire like to check in on the team’s AFC North rivals. And seeing as how Browns fans love to hate longtime Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, this seems like a good time to see what’s going on with Big Ben.

In a Father’s Day event called ManUp Pittsburgh, Roethlisberger admitted that his vices had been getting the better of him in recent years. Those vices?

Pornography and alcohol.

Roethlisberger spoke freely about his personal proclivities in the context of becoming a better man and a better Christian, the theme of the event.

“It’s not always easy,” Roethlisberger said via ESPN. “People don’t realize all the time that us athletes, we’re human. We sin like everybody else. I am no different. We make mistakes. We get addicted to things. We sin. We’re human. I think sometimes we get put on this pedestal where we can’t make mistakes. I’ve fallen as short as anybody. I’ve been addicted to alcohol. I’ve been addicted to pornography, which makes me then not the best husband, not the best father, not the best Christian I can be.”

Roethlisberger’s off-field life is the subject of frequent speculation, both from Steelers fans and those who root against the team. It’s impressive that Roethlisberger felt secure enough to speak about his personal issues and is trying to use his platform to help others avoid his own addictions. He has been accused of multiple sexual assaults earlier in his career and was suspended during the 2010 season for off-field activities.

Now he’s focused on being a better man and a more active Christian ambassador. Good for him. After missing most of the 2019 season with an elbow injury, Roethlisberger is expected to be at full strength for the upcoming NFL season.

Better than raping. Which he use to do. So it’s an improvement I guess.
Can’t wait till he’s out of the league. He’s trash.

I did. But if he's really changed, good for him. He's not just the enemy quarterback, he's a person as well.

If he TRULY has changed, congrats to him.

I will probably have a very different take than most.

I think that he is admitting that he has character flaws is a good sign. I think that means he wants to better himself. I think he knows that he will face hate and ridicule for admitting to such things, but I think that he believes that the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term grief. I also think that the reactions of all the readers of this news is revealing in and of itself.

I agree. It takes a strong person to testify to their faults and weaknesses. We all have them.

I don't look at him as a player for a team I don't like.. I look at him as a brother in need of any support I can give. Football is just a game. We are talking real life deal here.

He actually looks like a porn-obsessed drinker type. Always has, even before his drunk raping days.

Hope he becomes a better man and sticks to it. Hope MG smashes his face in this fall.

LOL...that was pretty funny except that probably includes 90% of the males in this country and 40% of the females.

Has he stopped that yet?

I commend him for trying to better himself, but, I have to wonder if there was a reason for him going public with it. Is he trying to get ahead of a story?

That's the first thing I thought when I read the headline... nothing so far though, and you would think the "story" would be right behind his statement.

It would not surprise me. He is a sexual predator. Who knows what skeletons might come pouring out of his closet...

This old saw popped into me mind:

Tells the Judge, "I plead guilty but by reason of the defense of insanity."
"Insanity, sir?"
"Yes, your honor. I am crazy about that stuff and have been for years."

Pathetic. I wish everybody good luck in mastering their demons. But why this is a big media piece, a wire story, and it took over half a page this morning in our paper, is beyond me. Must be a publicity gimmick story more than news. Hope he has stopped.

I absolutely could care less about Ben and his personal issues. I want to see him crash and burn on the field, to the point of embarrassment. What he and his wife deal with off the field is their concern.

Guess, swag, (scientific, wild, as, guess)

Most likely, He ends up a broadcaster face,
and this helps his image.

Complete guess, and speculation, and hope from me that his playing career is over.
