Fyi.....

Starting at 7p on ESPN2 are some of the highly touted boxing matching matches from years past.

Loved boxing back then and earlier. Imo it's lost it's luster over the years. Most prob due to the emergence of MMA, etc.

Can remember years ago in the 60s listening on my 9 volt transistor radio in bed(when I was supposed be sleeping/grade school in the morn) to Ali fights.

Here's tonight's lineup.

ALI-FOREMAN

ALI FFRAZIER 3

ALI SPINKS

BERBICK TYSON

TYSON HOLMES

TYSON SPINKS

TYSON DOUGLAS

HOLIFIELD FOREMAN

If I don't watch em tonight no biggie. Their being Dvr'd. thumbsup

Re: De La Hoya vs. Trinidad -

I never agreed with the Trinidad decision.

If one was a cynical man, you could suggest it (the decision) was simply a set up for what they thought would be a big money rematch.

WWWOOOOWWWW

that is the first thing I said when I first saw this video this week. I started thinking all of these wild ideas about an historical comeback and who he would fight to win ALL of the belts back.then I told myself to calm down and think about this.
the boy is what 53 -54 yo? yea I remember how it was that far from my prime. the video shows two separate workouts going by his clothes. the video is showing the highlights of some BADASS combinations. how long can he sustain that attack though? if he can do that until the final bell he can beat just about anyone in history, but going by history we know he can't. remember when he quit bobbing he started fighting standing up then he started getting hit and when you run out of gas you start fighting standing up.
one thing this video did though was to get America talking about boxing again. which imo is a good thing
thanks mike......

I hope this isn't true.

I'm afraid it is... Tyson has lost his 400m fortune while Evander has pissed away 320m. They're both pretty much broke. I would think they could earn upwards of 50m each on this fight.

It would be like the movie Grudge Match only in real life. Sad.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Years ago (after Foreman retired for the 2nd time) there was talk of a Foreman-Holmes fight. Thankfully it never happened. I believe the ages were in the ballpark of Tyson and Holyfield.

While there's no doubt that Tyson and Holyfield are in better condition, I still think it's a reflection of a lack of interest in the big heavyweight fights nowadays.

Besides the fact that Foreman-Holmes would've been a snooze fest, there was simply more real heavyweight fights to get excited about back then.

Now, not so much. Therefore, promoters grasping at straws.

There is not a Baseball Thread in tailgate newer than this.

Maybe I'd watch Baseball if the cultural icon that was ESPN's sportscenter for a stretch of time, (I'll guess about 1990-1997)

Who wouldn't watch, eastern timezone, 11-12 midnight, and an instant turnaround to the exact same show repeated midnight to 1 am.
"Get Off Me Ball"! for Home Run Calls,

Everything that happened in sports, today, with witty insight, and one liners, and guess what,
HIGHLIGHTS! REPLAYS! ACTION, seeing the games unfold in 10 seconds, maybe 20, it was maybe the red zone channel before the red zone channel existed.

And somehow it ended, Some Big League Selfish folks probably, or some lawyers maybe, Sports aren't the same afterwards.

I might even watch Baseball again if Sportscenter as it was in it's prime, were still on.

Kind of a funny story.

I was in the telephone business working for GTE. Of all I things I get connected to a phone call from Otis Nixon the former baseball player. He owned a electronics store outside Atlanta.

It ends up he was hired by Evander to install a phone system in his new home which was being finished. This is right after the first Tyson fight 1996. So Nixon sets up an appointment on a Saturday to go to Evander's house south of Atlanta. First Nixon, myself, and a couple other vendors met for breakfast. Otis makes a point to not bug Evander about autographs. Just be all business etc.

The house Evander built was over 11k square feet. Just enormous. Now I am a giant boxing fan. My one best friend was a boxing judge. Boxing was my first sport. My godfather was a heavyweight. I was raised in the sport. So I was thrilled to meet Evander just as a fan.

So we are at the new house walking around and I am figuring an estimate for a phone system of like 25 phones.

Evander comes over on a four wheeler from the old house. He is chiseled. I mean cut. As soon as he got off the four wheeler I came up to him grabbed him by the shoulder and arm and said "I can't believe you knocked that c***sucker out."

He started laughing and after that the ice was broken. Super nice guy. We hung out some that day and had some laughs.

Maybe I can just reiterate my earlier post on this thread and substitute Jones for Holyfield.

Or maybe it'll be a decent diversion.

Who knows.

You should watch some Rocky Marciano fights and highlights on Youtube. I remember my Dad telling me about Marciano pounding opponents' upper arms, shoulders, and rib cage in early rounds until they could no longer hold their gloves up to protect their head. That would be when they got KO'd. Of course, when Foreman tried that with Ali, he got punched out, exhausted, and got KO'd himself.

True story: Rocky spent a night at my grandma and grandpas. Way before my time, obviously.

Grandpa 'hired' him to promote his business.

The great thing about Hearns was that he was absolutely fearless, like something clicked in his head in a millisecond and decided it was time to crush and destroy - strategy came in a far second place sometimes.

But that was also probably what led to his defeat in that fight.

Hagler could always take a punch and recover. (Roldan was arguably a slip).

One of the greatest rounds of boxing ever. Some Gotti and Ibeabuchi stuff comes to mind as well.
