This will be an interesting matchup...

Xavier Rhodes Knows From Experience Not to Let Odell Beckham Jr. Get in His Head
Phillip B. Wilson

INDIANAPOLIS — Xavier Rhodes intends to keep his cool this time when going up against Odell Beckham Jr.

They’re four years older, and presumably wiser. They’re with different teams — Rhodes now a cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts while Beckham is a wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns.

But when the 3-1 AFC teams meet in Cleveland on Sunday, it’s difficult to imagine either player backing down or taking any trash-talk from the other without a response. They sure didn’t last time.

Tempers flared on Monday Night Football in 2016, when Rhodes was emerging as one of the NFL’s elite cover guys and made a primetime statement in shutting down Beckham. Rhodes, who was with Minnesota, limited Beckham, who was with the N.Y. Giants, to a career-low three catches for 23 yards in a 24-10 Vikings victory.

Rhodes was determined to match OBJ in every way, be it with physicality or his mouth. Rhodes hit Beckham twice after he had taken one step out of bounds. The first time it happened in the second quarter, Beckham ran back at Rhodes and gave him a bump, which resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for taunting, and the receiver also made contact with an official. Beckham took a shot at Rhodes at the end of the next play.

After another sideline collision, Rhodes had to be restrained by an assistant coach. Yeah, as these highlights show, it was intense.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (13) will face an old nemesis in Indianapolis Colts cornerback Xavier Rhodes on Sunday. Rhodes limited Beckham to a career-low three receptions for 23 yards in a memorable 2016 matchup on "Monday Night Football."

Rhodes insists there's no need for their history to repeat itself.

“Nah, man,” he said Tuesday. “That was in the past, man. This is a new year. More than likely, we’re probably just going to go out there and play ball. We’re older guys and we’re just going to go out there and try to get the win.”

Suffice to say Beckham undoubtedly remembers. NFL players have long memories and are often motivated to get some payback.

Both teams have won three in a row. The Browns are off to their best start since 2001. The Colts are 3-1 for the first time since 2013.

The three-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro wide receiver is coming off a monster game at Dallas, where he scored three times, twice on receptions and another on an end-around.

Rhodes laughed and shook his head as the anticipated question about Beckham was being asked in a Zoom video call.

“Oh my God, I knew that question was coming, sooner or later,” he said. “Odell is a great receiver, man, one of the top-five receivers in the league. With him, personally, you’ve just got to be mentally prepared because it’s going to be not only a mental battle but a physical battle, too.

“He can jaw and get in your ear and try to get in your head, so you’ve just got to be mentally strong and also know you’ve got to be physically strong, too, because he’s going to try to be physical with you at the line and down the field also.”

Rhodes, named to the first of three Pro Bowls in 2016, also had an interception after Beckham cut off a deep route and crossed up quarterback Eli Manning.

Rhodes, 26 then, offered this post-game assessment.

“He tries to get to you by getting on you, fighting with you, trying to get you out of your game,” Rhodes said. “He's a very quick, very elusive player, so he can get out of his breaks pretty fast. You have to stay patient and stay on top of him. He can do some of both (talking to you and shoving you). There's no telling what you get out of him. He's a great player.”

Beckham, 23 then, was making himself known for emotional outbursts when he wasn’t making big plays. The week before that game against Rhodes, Beckham took his frustrations out on a kicking net on the sideline.

They ended up being NFC teammates at the Pro Bowl in Orlando a few months later in 2017, and appeared to get along just fine.

Who knows what happens on Sunday, but it should be interesting to watch.

I think OBJ gets the reputation he does because he's a flashier player, and his outbursts tend to be more dramatic, if not bizarre.

I look at Landry, and see a WR that's just as in-your-face as Beckham (if not more), just as easily gets into scraps against other teams and can hurt his own team with taunting/unsportsmanlike penalties since he's been here, but he's a "gritty, tough" WR.

The more you look at it, the more it starts to look like a double-standard.

Should be an interesting match-up.

The Colts have a top defense according to the stats.

However, their opponents were not great offenses.

So, we will find out if they are deserving of their ranking.

I like falling back on our offensive line. Great asset to begin with. I see no reason to vary the approach that has won three games in a row.

Constant pressure on the quarterback. Be opportunistic. Win the turnover battle.

Rely on the run game. Spread the ball around. Make the defense think by giving different looks. Pass when the play is there. Don't pass when it is not. Don't turn it over.

Let the dawgs eat. This OL loves run blocking. Teller and Conklin especially. Teller as been superb at pulling and getting into the second level.

Baker is learning this offense. Continue that growth with the current approach. Let what works - work.

There will be games when defenses will begin to sell out on the run. There will be opportunities to throw.

Offensively, they don't seem to do a whole lot very well.
Defensively, they are quite legit, apparently, but offensively, they aren't too different from Cinci.

This will be a really good test because it is strength against strength and weakness against weakness.
Their O and our D are suspect... this is like the Cinci game.
Our O and their D are powerful... this is like the Baltimore game.

They are incredibly stout against both the run AND the pass; we will definitely have our work cut out for us. Rivers can pick us apart at will if we give him any sort of time at all.
Their starting LT is dinged, so that may help.

The fact he's still talking about OBJ being in his head means OBJ is still in his head.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I didn't fully read the article.... is HE talking about it, or are reporters asking him about it?

Hmmmm………..that is a good point about Landry. He is very physical and aggressive. He talks a lot and gets in the faces of opponents. I actually like his attitude because he brings a certain toughness to the team that we were lacking for years.

At this point I'm not sure it matters. If he had put it in the back of his mind, it isn't there now. wink

I think Rhodes was way better back then. Not saying he can’t/won’t have a great game, but he used to be better consistently

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

For sure. I love Landry, to be clear. Money well-spent. But he has 'antics' same as OBJ. Different, but antics. His attitude isn't as different as OBJ's as many portray (IMO, obviously). One earned himself a positive rep while the other got the opposite. Not totally fair, IMO.

I don't think he's in his head. It's a media-driven narrative, he merely responded to the question and said nothing that would fuel any fire.

We'll see if any of the "narrative" plays out on the field Sunday. OBJ is always gritty and talks a little smack, nothing wrong with that. He also has a tendency to make it physical resulting in penalties. Hopefully he avoids that and/or it doesn't hurt us in any way. Rhodes found away to push his buttons in the previous match-up and took him out of his game.

Guess what... If he is talking about not letting a player get into his head, he is probably there already....

There will be no playoffs. Can’t play with who we have out there and compounding it with garbage playcalling and worse execution. We don’t have good skill players on offense period. Browns 20 - Bears 17.

Colts Cb Xavier Rhodes, they also have Rok Ya-Sin, whatever,

Colts Cb, T.J. Carrie.

The Browns know all about TJ Carrie, if you see TJ Carrie in single coverage we better have a guy that can beat him, whether that's a tight end or a receiver or even a runningback.

Hello, McFly? -it's TJ Carrie. This is doable.

Side note.

They need to let Rashard Higgins Play, I just watched some highlight from some 2019, it was the Bills Browns 2019, post game, (good morning football) and THOSE GUYS were saying Higgins is Bakers favorite widout and one he's most comfortable with.
And Higgins' had the winning TD,

Got to put all the bullets in the gun. Bring Higgins in,

The Recipe hasn't changed thumbsup

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
