NFL fact or fiction: Browns poised to end playoff drought? Josh Allen for MVP?

Quote:
And I predicted it in this space just before the season kicked off. Cleveland's 49-38 win in Dallas was the single biggest statement of Week 4. The Browns entered the fourth quarter in Jerry World with a 41-14 lead -- and, for a while, it looked like they were going to blow it in inexplicable fashion. But a clutch, 50-yard touchdown run by Odell Beckham -- who scored three times in his best game as a Brown -- swung the momentum back in Cleveland's favor, and then Denzel Ward slammed the door on Dallas with a diving red-zone pick.

Cleveland, now 3-1 for the first time since 2001, handled success and prosperity. Kind of a huge deal. Since that 38-6 dud at Baltimore in the season opener, the Browns have scored 34-plus points in three straight games for the first time since 1968, per NFL Research. That's first-year head man Kevin Stefanski getting the most out of his talent and keeping the Browns buttoned up, neither of which happened under the last few clownish coaching regimes. This is why Cleveland is winning.

Despite losing Nick Chubb to a knee injury in the first quarter, the Browns racked up 307(!) rushing yards -- the most ever allowed by a Dallas defense. This is big for Cleveland, because Chubb is now expected to miss roughly six weeks, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Fortunately, the Browns have the best RB2 in football in Kareem Hunt. Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield is playing a responsible brand of football, with two touchdown passes in each of the past three games (against just one total pick in this span). OBJ is cooking once again, having already equaled his touchdown count (4) from Year 1 in Cleveland. Myles Garrett, who leads the NFL with five sacks and has now posted a strip-sack in three straight games, is arguably the early leader for Defensive Player of the Year.

Cleveland's no fluke. The Browns are making the playoffs. That's the expectation.

All this optimism is making me uneasy, but I think we finally found our guys.

I think this year’s team is more business ... which is credit to Stefanski IMO.

We could lay an egg the next two weeks, be 3-3 and have the world ending.

I’m worried without Chubb and Indy’s defense

EASY TO SAY AFTER YESTERDAYS GAME, Much harder to defend that statement "Before" yesterdays game, Soo

Someone's saying it NOW?? Means nothing to me.

Agreed. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. One game at a time.

We’ll see how good their D is when we’re running over them. Even without Chubb, even against a run D better then we’ve faced the last three weeks, we will rush for a lot of yards.

I hope so. Our run game will be essential to handling Indy. I don't trust our O to have to throw it a ton, and I certainly don't trust our D to win it either.

I'm not going to worry about playoffs until we qualify for one.

One game at a time.

You never know when a catastropic injury will happen. Or some other drama. Like say, Covid.

yup. There's a million what ifs. No sense or value in focusing on it right now.

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Running on the colts will be very hard to do. Their defense is very stout. Thier offense does just enough to win. I can see why they are the favorite in this game

It could be pretty sweet to see how Stefanski dials up the run game against a tough front. I hope we don't fold when we start getting pushed around. I remember that tended to happen sometimes when Shanny was here. Tough Dlines were our Achilles heel.

This is one of the best starts we've had in a long time... but we're a long way from the playoffs and currently third in the division... so long way to go...

I see the Colts game a lot like playing some Ravens teams from years past.
The Colts remind me of some traditional ravens type teams. The best thing is to just take it to them.

Colts, Steelers, Raiders ... we have those 3 teams (all wild card contenders) in the next 4 weeks. So, we’ll find out where we stand

This is beyond premature when we still have MANY potholes in our road. Nice to hear some love for a change, admittedly so. But this week it's the Ponies. Not looking past that. It can measure us. I don't trust our D, especially the secondary as called and played, to shut them down. Maybe a few crucial flash plays, but we need to score, to grind, to convert. Dallas win might have been flukier than I care to admit, but if we can consistently manage this, then great.

Just win, baby! Go, Browns. Unleash The Elf! brownie thumbsup

I'd argue that they haven't played anyone good yet.

this game will be their first true test against a decent offense

At this point, I hope Adam Schein is right,

but they sure have their work cut out for them.
