Christ the Lord is risen today! Hallelujah! laugh

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

To those who believe, as I do, in the miracle of The Resurrection and all that it promises, Happy Easter.

To those who believe otherwise, Happy Spring.

I certainly believe Christ died for our sins and was resurrected. I am still however interested in the math here. After all these decades I haven't seen an explanation of how Christ was sacrificed on a Friday afternoon and was resurrected early on Sunday morning yet the bible says he laid in the grave for three days and three nights as Jonah laid in the belly of the whale.

Someone did some fuzzy math on that one.

This would be a good start. Please read, with an open mind. https://www.gci.org/articles/how-long-was-jesus-in-the-tomb/

Also: https://carm.org/bible-difficulties/how-long-was-jesus-dead-in-the-tomb/

Notice, in the first link, it states
Quote:
The question remains: On what day of the week was Jesus crucified and buried in the tomb? Those who believe Jesus was crucified on Wednesday refer to Matthew 12:40. This verse has Jesus saying: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Proponents of a Wednesday crucifixion say that this statement means Jesus was exactly three days and three nights – or 72 hours – in the grave. Thus he was buried near sunset Wednesday evening and resurrected Saturday evening.

However, if we read the 20 other places in the New Testament in which Jesus and the apostles refer to the length of time he would spend in the tomb, we would be forced to conclude that they do not teach a literal three-day stay in the tomb. You may check the following verses where the length of time between Jesus’ death and burial, and his resurrection, is mentioned: Matthew 16:21; 17:23; 20:19; 26:61; 27:40, 64; Mark 9:31; 10:34; 14:58; 15:29; Luke 9:22; 13:32; 18:33; 24:7, 21, 46; John 2:19, 20; Acts 10:40; 1 Corinthians 15:4. In 20 places indefinite expressions such “on the third day he will be raised” are given as the length of time between these events.

Lastly, why does it matter if it was 2 days or 4 days?

Have a good Easter remembering He died for you.

Words and math matter. I've seen the excuses to try and rationalize why Matthew 12:40 is inaccurate. Even trying to say he laid in the grave for three days is a weak argument. Being crucified late Friday and being resurrected at dawn on Sunday does not constitute three days in the grave.

In the bible the reference is clear on what a day is. It's sunset to sunset.

The only thing that matters to me is that I think the math proves the very idea of Good Friday is a farce. And it appears that this must matter to you as well or you wouldn't have felt the need to include your two cents. wink

Happy Easter. The most important day of the year for our faith.

The Israelites of that time counted any part of a day as a "day". Days started at dusk, and ended at dusk. Jesus was crucified on a day we'll call Friday, before dusk. Then Saturday went from dusk to dawn, then Sunday started at dusk following Saturday.

It's a good example of how different cultural norms can really be confusing.

You really need to look into what they called a day. The "Sabbath day" was observed from sunset to sunset. That's what constituted a day. There are only excuses why religion has twisted Christianity and the scriptures.

Every day, 24 hour period, included the night in counting what constituted an entire day.

From my link above, that perhaps some didn't care to read, OR, chose to ignore, OR aren't aware that times and terminology could be different from now til back then: "The solution is simple when we learn that according to Jewish custom any part of a day, however small, is included as part of a full day.1 “Since the Jews reckoned part of a day as a full day, the ‘three days and three nights’ could permit a Friday crucifixion.

Also, in the first link that may not have been read, or understood, it says this: "However, if we read the 20 other places in the New Testament in which Jesus and the apostles refer to the length of time he would spend in the tomb, we would be forced to conclude that they do not teach a literal three-day stay in the tomb.

I'm not sure why Matthew 12:40 is the only scripture being cited when it's obvious by the 20 others I listed, that the 'literal' term does not mean what SOME think.

Happy Easter to all.

That isn't the only scripture. It's made perfectly clear when describing what the Sabbath day is, that a day lasts from sunset to sunset. In order to have three days, it must include three nights.

For someone who gave out a like about this not being the proper place for this discussion you just can't help yourself can you? It's so inappropriate that you just had to continue it.

rofl

Sabbath "day". From sunset to sunset.

Yea it's a 12 hour day calander, the Jewish side, Sunrise to sunset split to 12 hours, kind of like,
maybe 6am-6pm. And 4, 3 hours watches
a first watch, 6-9 pm
2nd watch, 9-12 midnight
3rd watch, midnight-3am
and a 4th watch 3-6 am.

Over the years, one of the preachers I've listened to, went on about the particular year, a special year, and meeting of holidays or what not, the Time of the Crucifixion was a week with 3 Sabbaths.
A Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday Sabbath.

So round about the 6th hour would be round about noon.
and It's possible the Crucificion was on Wednesday.
