He has been one of the players that were a part of my fond memories watching the Browns in my youth. Sad news indeed.

I was born in Apple Creek and met him in Wooster as well. Fine man. He was at our sports awards banquet. Great lineman. Solid role model when I was growing up.
RIP, Dick Schafrath. Thanks for the memories.

Apple Creek! Cool. We where practically neighbors. Dick coached Wooster High School linemen for a few years in his retirement. Too bad he didn’t make into the HOF while living. He certainly deserved it.

I remember reading stories in the PD about Schafrath running from Wooster to Hiram for training camp. One year he ran from Wooster to Municipal Stadium for some charity. He was buddies with Gary Collins, and I also remember reading some hilarious stories from Collins about Dick being banned from "All You Can Eat" buffets around the entire area, because he could shut a restaurant down with his ability to consume prodigious amounts of food. Schafrath always showed up at TC below his target weight and needed to work hard to get himself up to his playing weight, and still needing to put a 10 pound weight in his jock for his weigh-in. He was also a great LT and deserves HOF consideration after blocking for 3 HOF RBs (Brown, Mitchell, Kelly), while protecting Frank Ryan's blind side in pass pro. RIP, Schaf.
