Fordham LB Ryan Greenhagen registers 30 tackles vs. Nebraska, tying NCAA Division I record - CBSSports.com

Fordham linebacker Ryan Greenhagen tied the NCAA Division I record for tackles in a single game with 30 during a 52-7 loss to Nebraska on Saturday. No one else in the game had more than eight tackles as the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year dominated for his unit.

The performance made Greenhagen the fourth FCS player to ever reach 30 tackles since NCAA defensive statistics became official in 2000. Others to achieve the feat include Chattanooga's Josh Cain (2001), Norfolk State's Kevin Talley (2004) and Stetson's Donald Payne (2014).

Greenhagen's 30 tackles were also the most by any player against an FBS opponent since the NCAA began keeping records. The record was previously held by former Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray, who had 28 tackles against Army. NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary notably recorded 35 tackles against Houston and 33 tackles against Arkansas in 1978 for Baylor, but both of those games occurred before stats were considered official.

Greenhagen, a senior from Sparta, New Jersey, was named a 2020-21 STATS FCS All-American and the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year with 22 tackles in just two games for Fordham. In his last full season, he led the team with 123 tackles and 18.5 tackles for loss in 2019. He entered the 2021 season second among all FCS player with 1.37 tackles for loss per game.

In addition to Greenhagen's record, Fordham made some history of its own. The Rams scored a touchdown against a Power Five opponent for the first time since 1969, according to the game broadcast.

That’s …. A lot of tackles haha. Fordham actually put up a fight the first quarter and a half.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Presbyterian Blue Horse QB Ren Hefley sets FCS TD pass record in season-opener

CLINTON, S.C. -- Michigan transfer Ren Hefley had a record-setting day in his first start for Presbyterian, tossing an FCS record 10 touchdowns in leading the Blue Hose to an 84-43 season-opening victory over NAIA-member St. Andrews on Saturday.

Presbyterian made a winner of head coach Kevin Kelly, who was coaching his first college game. Kelly was selected for the job after leading Pulaski Academy of Little Rock, Arkansas, to nine state championships and 216 victories in 18 years.

The Blue Hose, who moved up to Division I play in 2007, also had two TD passes from backup QB Tyler Huff, breaking the record for most touchdowns by a team (11), set by David Klingler and the Houston Cougars in a win over Eastern Washington in 1990. Hefley broke the FCS record of nine, set by Mississippi Valley State's Willie Totten -- who teamed up with wide receiver Jerry Rice to form the Satellite Express -- in 1984. The record was tied by Portland State QB Drew Hubel in 2007.

Hefley completed 38 of 50 passes for 538 yards, throwing his 10th TD pass on the first play of the fourth quarter before taking a seat. He did not throw an interception. Huff completed 7 of 9 for 63 yards. Freshman Jalyn Witcher had five catches for 156 yards and three scores -- all in the first half -- for Presbyterian, which set a school record for points scored. Matthew Rivera had eight receptions for 137 yards and two TDs.

Seven other receivers caught one TD pass. Hefley's touchdown passes covered -- in order -- 1, 62, 79, 36, 9, 25, 5, 1, 49 and 6 yards.

Andrew Fowler completed 9 of 20 passes for 99 yards and a TD and rushed for 40 yards and two scores for the Knights, who hail from North Carolina. D'Vonte Allen carried seven times for 86 yards and two scores.

Even though on the other side of the ball, the "Seven Blocks of Granite" would be proud.
