Super Sleepers

Scott Wright
President, Draft Countdown

The term "Sleeper" is becoming harder to define these days. Technically Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was probably a sleeper because he went to a small school, even though he was a first round pick. The NFL Draft has become so popular and the internet has made information so readily available that in reality there are very few true sleepers.

Here is a look at what I call my "Super Sleeper Team". None of these guys were invited to the Scouting Combine and, honestly, most of them will go undrafted. However, they are all prospects who I like and feel have the potential to make a roster and contribute.

Some of the players who have appeared on this list in the past and wound up making impacts in the NFL include Eric Foster (Colts), Brian Witherspoon (Jaguars), Mike Cox (Chiefs), Brett Kern (Broncos), Steven Hauschka (Ravens), Mackenzy Bernadeau (Panthers), Aaron Brown (Lions), Ryan Succop (Chiefs) and Nick Reed (Seahawks). From last year the headliners were Larry Hart (Jaguars), Deji Karim (Jaguars), Reggie Stephens (Bengals), Jorrick Calvin (Eagles), Joe Webb (Vikings) and Sam Shields (Packers).

So without further adieu, here is Draft Countdown's 2011 Super Sleeper Team:

Quarterback Adam Weber Minnesota
Running Back Donald Buckram U.T.E.P.
Fullback Patrick DiMarco South Carolina
Wide Receiver Vidal Hazelton Cincinnati
Wide Receiver Scotty McKnight Colorado
Tight End Richard Gordon Miami (FL)
Offensive Tackle Byron Stingily Louisville
Offensive Tackle David Mims Virginia Union
Offensive Guard Byron Bell New Mexico
Offensive Guard Daniel Kilgore Appalachian St.
Center Tim Barnes Missouri
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Defensive End Steven Friday Virginia Tech
Defensive End Christian Anthony Grambling St.
Defensive Tackle David Carter UCLA
Defensive Tackle Ollie Ogbu Penn St.
Linebacker Keith Darbut Baldwin-Wallace
Linebacker Jeff Tarpinian Iowa
Linebacker Matt Marcorelle Delaware
Cornerback Korey Lindsey-Woods Southern Illinois
Cornerback Ryan Jones Northwest Missouri St.
Safety Eugene Clifford Tennessee St.
Safety Michael Ricks Stillman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kicker Wes Byrum Auburn
Punter Rob Long Syracuse
Return Specialist Shaky Smithson Utah
Long-Snapper Christian Yount UCLA

If sleeper is a guy who plays at a school you will never see on TV, then my list doesn't qualify. If you're looking at guys who won't get drafter before the 6th round, then this is my list:

Tyrod Taylor QB VaTech
Graig Cooper RB Miami
Chad Spann RB No. Illinois (although he did not look good in the Texas v. the Nation game)
Vidal Hazelton WR USC/Cincy
DeAndre Brown WR So Miss
Jeff Maehl WR Oregon
John Bender OG Nevada
Andrew Jackson OG Fresno St
Ryan Pugh C Auburn

Karl Klug DE Iowa
Bruce Miller OLB Central Florida
Chris White ILB Miss St.
Byron Maxwell CB Clemson
Jai Valai S Wisconsin
