Overview

Bryant originally enrolled at Abeline Christian. He spent one season there, in which he did not play. After leaving the program, Bryant transferred to Cisco Junior College (Texas) before ultimately transferring to Eastern Central.

In his first season, as a defensive end for the Tigers, Bryant had 49 tackles (19 for loss), 13.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and blocked four kicks. Bryant won the Lone Star Conference North Defensive Lineman of the Year after picking up two LSC North Defensive Player of the Week honors and one LSC North Special Teams Player of the Week award in 2010. Bryant was a first team All-Great American Conference selection in 2011, after amassing 62 tackles (12.5 for loss), three sacks, and three blocked kicks. Bryant only played in eight games as a senior, as he was suspended after being arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover police officer. He still managed to total 54 tackles (17.5 for loss), 10.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and two blocked kicks.
We just drafted a kid who got kicked off the team for selling weed AT practice. I am not just talking about selling weed I am talking about him having such low respect for his football team and teammates that he was busted selling it AT PRACTICE.

Ahh, he's industrious too!

We must really like Gordon a lot to be drafting a dealer for him

Though that could also explain this move.
He will make the team if he has time to put his mary jane selling on hold. I did watch this kid early on until he got booted from the team. He can bend and has insanely long arms. I am just pissed we drafted someone who had the nerve to sell pot AT PRACTICE.
I've read this guy is an absolute athletic freak.

But...he's as raw as they come and apparently a bit of a knucklehead.

Wrong..He didn't get kicked off the team. He was suspended for the first 8 games. Before you get on your high horse at least get your facts right.

East Central University's All-America defensive end, Armonty Bryant, was arrested on suspicion of felonious distribution of marijuana, according to The Ada News. Bryant was taken into custody during football practice. The newspaper report said Bryant posted $25,000 bond and was released from the Pontotoc County Justice Center.

The Wichita Falls, Texas, native allegedly sold $20 worth of marijuana to an Ada Police Department undercover agent on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13 at an ECU parking lot.

For it mixed up, he got kicked off his first team for grade issues.
They just said if he simply follows the guidelines of his probation, he doesn't have to go to jail for 5 years!
That's a good incentive if you ask me.

Selling $20 bags is a felony?

Jeez, Texas does not like marijuana, eh?
His name has been popping up as the small school freak of this year's class. Apparenntly he has long arms and a first step from hell. May not no where he is going but he gets there quickly lol

They just showed some highlights on ESPN, he sure looked like a man among boys in DII. We took a 7th round flyer on him....who knows?

Funny!
Man, he gets off the line like he was shot out of a cannon.

He blows by Tackles (granted, lower level Tackles) like they weren't even there.
They had some highlights on TV.

And he's freaky athletically.

Lombardi picks size, speed athletes and this guy has it in spades. We'll see if he works out.
Lol. That was fun to watch.
He has a quick first step and seems to have good instincts (aside from selling pot to an undercover cop). Those skills can be built upon.
Good watch! YAC = Yards After Crush!

Still, baggies at practice?!? Good luck. Does step out in a blaze off the line. Clean up your act.
Yeah, I hope this kid has his head back on straight.

Of course, we took Gordon high even with his heavy history of marijuana usage and failed drug tests ..... so hopefully it was a case of a kid being dumb and just doing stupid stuff.

If he stays clean he could be a major contributor. He looks like he should be a solid special teamer too ..... especially on the FG defense team. .
Big man that can run..... Guess he fits the plan. Hope he works out and can stay out of trouble.
Here's something I published on him in February.

Major props to clevesteve for putting this guy on the "All Underrated Team"
https://www.dawgtalkers.net/showflat.php?...rue#Post1034019

When we drafted him I was like... Why have I heard this name?

Thanks Steve

I love this philosophy for the last few picks. Choosing guys who have top end talent, but fall due to injury or personality flaws. Despite my initial disgust and fear I am pretty dang happy with whoever is doing the drafting.
Big man who can run! It looks like it doesn't matter where you line him up, he's gonna find the ball. We'll have to see if he can shed blocks like that at this level, but I like his pursuit.
excellent insight
I'm liking the left edge of our defense... The law firm of Kruger, Bryant, and Bryant.

Ehh, he's a 7th round pick,, how many of those actually have a long career let alone make their First team?

They took a flyer,, if he shows up, great, if he doesn't, so what?

this guy in the 1st or 2nd round,, yeah,, I'd be outraged, but in the 7th, no biggie
We have our new Alex Hall!

7th round. Worth the risk, I guess.

And I am not really sure it was at practice. It said in the parking lot. I thought at first he was on the sidelines during practice and sold it. LOL
Some people are being really short-sided.

This guy probably won't even play this year. He's purely a developmental player. The Browns probably drafted him in hopes of having him make a contribution in a year or two. That's usually what the very late rounds are for.
The NFL is going to own the team next year, duh. They're going to cut everyone.

J/C. And yet many on this board wanted Honey Badger, who has no idea how many drug tests he failed because he stopped counting at 10.
J/c... You guys realize this isn't an out-of-left-field pick, right? He was at the combine.
We gotta get that guy

You never have enough pass rushers.

Do you know how many LB the Steelers drafted in the 3 drafts prior to this year?

5

Pass rushers are gold in this system, and churning them through your system year after year is the way to ensure that you always have guys to create the pass rush.

Indeed. He did what he is supposed to do against lesser competition. It's like the minor leagues in baseball. The player dominates at one level, he goes to the next, and so on.

A flyer pick. I like it. I'd rather take a guy like this then a guy who played OK at a major college. That adds up to a middle of the road special teamer most of the time.

This guy might flop out or he might show, much like Fisher did, that he can play on any level.

We are already loaded on the DL I would have rather seen a real FB drafted here.

We can make that guy the fullback. I'll bet he can block and can catch a ball.
He was also clearly the best player on the field at the Texas vs the nation game which featured mostly FBS talent.
At least better than Owen can lol

No doubt that guy sucks. Unless he finds something real quick, I don't see how he makes the team.

My hope is Smelly has worked hard, added 5-10 lbs and becomes the lead blocker when we run a fullback formation.
Does this offense even really care about the FB catching the ball?
I seem to recall that it was this offense that made us huge fans of Terrelle Smith and Lawrence Vickers because of the way they could brutally blow people up, but we almost never asked them to catch the ball.

Or, am I getting my players/seasons mixed up again?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
JC

Not really concerned with his past considering he's a 7th rounder. low risk, high reward.

Call me crazy, and I know people project him as a OLB, but I wouldn't be surprised if they asked this guy to put on some weight and try playing as a 3-4DE. He seems very comfortable with his hands on the ground.

lol!

Fixed my post
I think we would have liked if Vickers could catch the ball. One play sticks in my mind from 2010: 3rd down in the shadow of our our goal-line, McCoy flips a little flat pass out to Vickers, who has nothing but grass in front of him for 50 yards ... DOINK. It could have been a game-changer, but instead it was punt situation from deep in our own territory.

I don't think you are. All the more reason to not worry about a "true" fullback and put a quick "true" guard in the position if blocking is the desired result.

Reminds me of the Alex Hall selection 5 years ago. Another 7th Rounder. Showed flashes. One skill set.
I think that we could see the Browns keep a FB and run more of a traditional RB/FB set .... or run more 2 TE set. After all, we did load up on blocking TE this off-season. Maybe they see the FB or extra TE as interchangeable entities ...... if you have one of each, great .... but if you carry an extra "blocking" TE in lieu of a FB, that's fine too.
I think this group wants playmakers on the field. Put the other team in a nickel a lot of the time, with Cameron being a TE who will be able to run a defender out of a play if it is a run.

If the defender doesn't at least check him for a moment, play action is going to burn them in a big way.

I think Cameron is going to have a monster year. Pro-Bowl type year IMO, though politics might keep him out since some names are already established at the position.

You can look at Turner's history, and he seems to always have a high production TE. Add in Chud was a TE coach at one point, I think he favors the position as well. It all adds up to a breakout season.

I remember a play like that for the texans - 3rd and about 5 deep in Oakland territory and Schaub tried to hit him in the flat - wide open, no one near him and a clear lane to the end zone... Hit him in the chest as he turned his head to look up field... Texans had to kick a field goal - ended up losing by less than a td
Turner has utilized fullbacks in a variety of ways. From Larry Centers (pass catching) to Lorenzo Neal (never even sniffed the ball) to Mike Tolbert (block, rush, catch). I think it depends who is on the team.
Turner forced Neal out. They only coexisted for one year (2007) before Norv made it clear that he wanted pass catchers in the backfield and guys who could run occasionally in short-yardage situations. Thus the drafting of Jacob Hester (who cost the Chargers a third round pick, a 2009 second round pick, and a 2009 fifth round pick!!!!!!) who had both of those attributes. Hester was the starting FB from 2008-2011. In 2012 he was replaced with Leron McClain, who again, can both catch balls out of the backfield and run in short-yardage situations. Tolbert was the backup at FB and RB from 2008-2009 and was converted to only playing RB in 2010, presumably because he can't block at all (look at the Panthers' decline in rushing stats this year lol).

Point being that Turner (in SD) had a very specific skillset he was looking for in fullbacks.

This offense makes the FB a star. Moose is what they are looking for. Powerful lead blocker that can catch the gimmies.
FBs are readily available from a plethora of sources. Not too worried about acquiring one. The good news is that Hecket is gone and we won't have to watch another down of Marasic.

Man he's 260 and only did 15 reps? Better get this kid in the weight room. FAST.
Jared Allen did 13 reps at the combine.

Trust me, this guy has plenty of functional strength. If you want to see what this guy is about, get your hands on this year's Texas vs the nation game.

In his defense, he's got SUPER long arms....that a longer distance for the weight to travel than people with shorter arms for the bench press. People with longer arms usually struggle with that exercise. Its not really a valid test of pure strength anyways.

The kid has a pterodactyl wingspan. He's going to bulk up and play DE from what I've read.
An interesting review of Armonty Bryant from the National Football Post- Scouting Department...lists him as a possible 3 or 4th rounder. Also lists him as the 10th best DE coming out...

SUMMARY - Long athlete with sneaky quickness off the ball. Set ECU's all-time sack record. Can play standing up as an outside linebacker in 3-4 defense and also play defensive end in 4-3 scheme. Explosive off the ball with long stride. Plays with good leverage and can control the blocker with arms measuring over 35 inches. Has strong hands to stack and shed. Quick arm over move. Has very good speed and can close quickly to the football. Is a good athlete and looks natural in space. Can track and catch the ball carrier from behind. Has a knack for causing turnovers. Needs to get stronger in his upper body. Not a dominant tackler. Reaches for too many tackles instead of running through the ball carrier. Small school player who has huge upside. His natural pass rush skills will allow him to play as a rookie. With solid coaching, Bryant should be a starter by year 2 in the NFL. Overall, I expect some team to take a gamble on Bryant in the late 3rd or 4th round because players with natural pass rush skills and good athleticism are hard to find.

Link
I'm ok with the gamble here, but still incredibly disappointed we didn't use this pick on sub 4.5 TE Gragg....I know it's "only" the 7th round, but considering our roster at the time of the pick I feel like Gragg was the better "risk" to take, as he has a much higher floor imho
Maybe so. That is some speed for a TE.

I have a feeling both Chud and Norv have reviewed the tape and have made the decision to let Cameron have a year in the spotlight.

I have a feeling a star is about to be born.
I have no problem with giving Cameron the spotlight. My problem is not having a backup option if he shrinks in that spotlight or gets injured (and I don't think we have a good backup plan).
Quote:

I can't remember the names of the guys we brought in, specifically the guy Chud had last year, but I doubt he brought him over because he is a swell guy.

My hope is he brought him over because he sees talent and is a guy we can plug in and not lose a tremendous amout.
we signed Gary Barnidge and Kellen Davis in FA. maybe Barnidge has more upside than I am giving him credit for having, but it just seems to be a ton of "?"

again, Chud/Norv have always had good TE's, so I do have some trust with them, it's just that I can also see it going wrong (same situation with Horton and the DBs. he has always done his best work with secondaries, but the lack of depth in ours makes me worry some).
Well Bubba, a lot of things can go wrong. This is the Browns we are talking about, right?

In the end we are only going to keep 3 TE's, and we just signed those guys. I doubt they were going to cut the guys they just signed to keep a 7th round TE.

At least that's the way I have it figured.
Browns notebook: A sympathetic Brown

By Steve Doerschuk
CantonRep.com staff writer

Why did the Browns take a chance on Armonty Bryant, an East Central Oklahoma defensive end who was arrested for selling marijuana last fall?

Rob Chudzinski explained:

“Through the course of looking into his background with Coach (Joe) Cullen, as well as our scouting staff, we felt like he is past the mistakes that he has made and ready to move on. He has matured.”

Cullen, the Browns’ new defensive line coach, might be more inclined to give a player a second chance than most.

In 2006, when he was a coach with the Lions, he was arrested twice during the preseason, once for indecent conduct, once for drunk driving.

Cullen flew to Oklahoma to give Bryant a private workout.

“We got to know him a little bit better than the cursory glance at a guy,” Chudzinski said. “He’s an explosive, speed-off-the edge, good-sized defensive end who can apply pressure to the quarterback. He’d be that type of player in our scheme.”

DEEP-SPACE ISSUE

It’s asking a lot for a rookie sixth-round pick who hasn’t completely recovered from Achilles surgery to compete for the No. 1 free safety job.

At the moment, though, Jamoris Slaughter is in the mix with 2011 Round 7 pick Eric Hagg and 2011 undrafted rookie Tashaun Gipson. Hagg won the starting job last summer but was benched early in the season. Gipson became a favorite of the previous regime.

Slaughter, from Notre Dame, blew out an Achilles in his third game last September.

“We felt good looking at his film from the year before,” head coach Rob Chudzinski said. “It’s still going to take a little time in him getting back into it, but we saw a player who was extremely productive and very versatile. He played on the slot, covered man to man, blitzed and played back deep.”

Banner thinks Slaughter can be “much more than you would get in the sixth round ... our medical staff was very optimistic about the (Achilles).”

HASLAM IN THE HOUSE

Jimmy Haslam broke free from his trouble at Pilot Flying J to take a seat in the draft room Thursday through Saturday.

Haslam never visited the makeshift media area near the end zone of the indoor practice field.

Joe Banner on Haslam’s role:

“He’s actively involved in his way. He holds everybody to a high standard. He asks a lot of very good, very smart questions that are good things to make sure we think through.

“He is a very positive energy and force to have around. Everyone feels like we have his support. He just uplifts, you’ve been around him, he up lifts the energy around him. He is just a very positive, happy guy.”

EXTRA POINTS

• Rob Chudzinski on guard-tackle Garrett Gilkey, a seventh-round pick out of NCAA Division II Chadron State:

“He went to the Senior Bowl and played very well against those guys. He has lined up against guys from Florida State, North Carolina and everywhere else and looked like he fit right in. Big guy, good size, really good feet, and can bend very well. It didn’t faze him one bit. He’s a tough guy and has the kind of attitude that we want.”

• Joe Banner didn’t give any clues on how Quentin Groves’ stock with the Browns might have dropped in the wake of his recent arrest in a prostitution sting:

“We’re aware of it, we’ve spoken to him. Chud has met with him extensively. There’s really nothing more to add to that.”

• This was Banner’s way of saying the Browns considered drafting a quarterback:

“Quarterback is an important position. We are always going to be open to looking at the position. We are always going to be evaluating everybody and every option there is to get stronger there. web page

I agree Peen...I'm very interested to see how they use Cameron in this offense. I know last year, I read EO and a few others saying a rookie Qb's best friend is the TE and I def agree with that. I still can't believe they didn't use the TE that much last year. Hopefully that will be a big change with Norv

2013 NFL Draft: New Browns defensive end Armonty Bryant seeks to atone for college arrest

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports columnist
Published: May 4, 2013 - 10:28 AM | Updated: May 4, 2013 - 10:30 AM

Tim McCarty believed so strongly that Armonty Bryant had learned from his 2012 arrest for selling marijuana that he gave him the key to his house.

Because East Central (Okla.) University defensive end Bryant could no longer live on campus after he left school to train for the NFL Scouting Combine, the football coach let Bryant live with him for about two months.

McCarty said Bryant not only slept and showered there, but he sat around the dinner table with McCarty’s wife, Jillian, and teenage daughters Bailey and Kendall talking and laughing over pictures on their cellphones. The McCartys had also temporarily taken in two recently hired football coaches, which made for a rollicking group.

“He just blended right in,” McCarty said of Bryant. “It was a good thing for him, and it was a good thing for us, too. He stays with us whenever he needs to.”

After being so close to Bryant, McCarty doesn’t believe the Browns took a huge risk when they selected the defensive playmaker with a penchant for blocking kicks in the seventh round, No. 217 overall.

Bryant was suspended for three games last season after being arrested in October for selling $20 of marijuana twice to an undercover officer, both times in an ECU parking lot, according to the Ada (Okla.) News. Because the transactions came within 2,000 feet of a school, he was charged with a felony.

Bryant was given a suspended sentence, according to the newspaper, and can have the felony charge expunged if he follows the terms of his probation, which runs through Oct. 18, 2017.

“I know Cleveland got a heckuva football player,” McCarty said. “Most of the scouts told us he was second- or third-round in terms of his grade.

“He’s paid a price. He made a terrible decision. Moving forward, I think he’s 10 times the person now.”

McCarty believes Bryant was caught in a police sting.

“I think another college kid had gotten in trouble and was doing something and was calling guys,” McCarty said. “Armonty made a poor choice. He had passed all his [drug] tests with us.”

McCarty said Bryant was not arrested at practice, as has been reported, but in the training room before practice.

“It was humiliating, it didn’t matter where it was,” McCarty said. “I didn’t ask him how he felt about all of it, but I know how I felt. It’s devastating when a young man puts his life or his career in jeopardy by making a simple decision and doesn’t understand the ramifications. I’d stand on the table any day and say he’s a quality young man.”

A semester from graduating from the Division II school with a kinesiology degree, Bryant sounded determined to prove to the Browns he wouldn’t be a problem child. During a conference call after he was drafted, Bryant said he hadn’t expected to be selected.

“Good people make mistakes’ is something that I’ve always been told by my coach,” Bryant said a week ago. “I feel like it was just a stupid move on my part. I should have been more mature about the situation and be more focused on football, which is something I really want to do with my life.

“Now that I’ve gotten that second chance, I feel like I won’t let anyone down. I won’t let myself, the people around me or the Cleveland Browns down. I appreciate them for taking this chance on me.”

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said they sent defensive line coach Joe Cullen to work out Bryant and believe Bryant has matured.

“Looking into his background with coach Cullen out there, as well as our scouting staff, we felt like he is past the mistakes he has made and ready to move on,” Chudzinski said.

There are other concerns with Bryant. He said he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder in January 2012, but did not bench press at the combine because of what he called “a minor tweaking” after the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game.

”I feel 100 percent right now, no issues whatsoever,” Bryant said.

Bryant also attended three colleges. A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, he started out at Abilene Christian but did not play because of academic issues. He spent one year at Cisco (Texas) Junior College. McCarty said he wouldn’t have known Bryant was leaving Cisco if he hadn’t just gotten a graduate assistant a job there.

In three years at East Central, which also produced the New York Jets’ Mark Gastineau, Bryant set a school record with 26.5 sacks. He also blocked nine kicks.

“A lot of people throw around the ‘it’ factor, and whatever it is, he has it in that area,” McCarty said. “He understands leverage and pad level and how to get push at that right spot.”

But Bryant, 6-foot-4 and 263 pounds, can do more than swat kicks.

“He’s a terrific athlete,” McCarty said. “He’s got great change of direction. He’s got a burst of speed, he’s got closing speed and he’s got general speed. He’s got a lot of pass-rush moves and knows how to finish plays.

“As a senior he only played in eight games and he was running wild out there.”

McCarty has three plays he’ll remember from Bryant’s time at East Central, with the best coming in his final game against Southeastern.

“Here comes the quarterback down the line. He grabs him with his right arm and the quarterback tries to figure out how to pitch. He pitches it and Armonty slaps it with his left arm, throws the quarterback down and scoops it up and runs [50] yards for a touchdown,” McCarty said.

“I’ve watched him defend the corner route and play man-to-man about 35 yards downfield and have a pass breakup in the corner of the end zone. His sophomore season I watched him jump and bat a ball and catch it and run 65 yards for a touchdown and outrun the receiver. The guy’s got some juice, now. He’s fun to watch.”

Contract information

New Browns wide receiver Davone Bess’ three-year contract extension that secures him through the 2016 season is worth $11.5 million, including $5.75 million guaranteed, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the Browns do not publicize the financial terms of player contracts.

The Browns acquired Bess, 27, this past weekend in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. The deal involved a swap of draft picks between the two teams.

Nice article - I don't expect a whoe lot from 7th rounders but this could be a great pick up

I guess that's one way to find people late on the draft. Go after guys with character concerns that cause their draft stock to fall. It's just a 7th rounder, so it's not a big deal of he's a tool.

Didn't someone say he sold the drugs during practice? Nothing I've read mentioned that, just that it was in a parking lot.
Posted By: oobernoober Re: Must Read on Armonty Bryant - 05/05/13 03:37 AM
Yeah, I picked up on that as well. One of the articles might have said that it was in the parking lot after practice or something, and it was misread.

Not sure it really makes a difference, though. The kid sold weed on a campus. That's bad.

I agree. It's a lot different taking a flyer on a late round pick than picking a high risk guy in the first or second round.

Sixth and seventh round picks don't generally make your team. I actually like how we took Slaughter and Bryant late. Both kids have talent. One fell because of a horrific injury and the other because he was a knucklehead.

Will both--or even one--make the team? I don't know. Slaughter might not fully recover from his injury and Bryant sounds like a loose cannon. However, it's pretty good strategy even if one of these kids makes it. We will get a kid w/real talent rather than just a guy.

Less than a week after the Browns drafted defensive end Armonty Bryant, his history of off-the-field trouble continued to grow.

Bryant was arrested Friday morning in Ada, Okla., and charged with driving under the influence, according to a police report obtained today by the Beacon Journal. He faces a misdemeanor DUI charge and is scheduled to be arraigned at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Pontotoc County District Court.

The Ada News first reported the arrest today.

“We are aware of the incident and are now in the process of collecting more information," Browns vice president of media relations Neal Gulkis said in a statement. "We will not have any further comment.”

After pulling Bryant over, officer Kylor Pool administered a standard field sobriety test but had problems getting Bryant to comply with a preliminary breath test by properly blowing into a breathalyzer, according to the police report. In the report, Pool wrote that he attempted the test at least 10 times, and it eventually yielded a result of 0.098. Oklahoma’s legal limit for intoxication is 0.08.

Pool then arrested Bryant and tried to get him to submit to the state’s breath test. Bryant repeatedly refused to adequately blow into the Intoxilyzer, though two deficient samples read 0.10 and 0.09, according to the report. Bryant also declined to submit to the state’s blood test.

“During my interactions with Armonty I observed him to have slurred speech, to have a strong odor associated with an alcoholic beverage coming from about his person and to be unbalanced on his feet,” Pool wrote in the report.

According to the report, Pool pulled Bryant over at 3:46 a.m. Friday because Bryant made a left turn after failing to signal until his vehicle had come to a stop at a stop sign near East Central University’s Norris Field, where he became a Division II college football standout. Bryant initially told Pool he was driving a friend home from a party and had not been drinking, but he later “stated that he had a few drinks earlier in the evening,” according to the report.

A passenger in the vehicle with Bryant, Ashley Robison, was arrested and charged with public intoxication.

Bryant posted $500 bail and was released from the Pontotoc County Justice Center at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

On April 27, the Browns drafted Bryant in the seventh round (No. 217 overall) despite his baggage. Bryant was suspended for three games last season after being arrested in October for selling $20 of marijuana twice to an undercover officer, both times in an ECU parking lot, according to the News. Because the transactions came within 2,000 feet of a school, he was charged with a felony.

Moments after he was drafted, Bryant said he learned from his marijuana arrest and vowed not to disappoint the Browns for showing faith in him.

‘“Good people make mistakes’ is something that I’ve always been told by my [college] coach,” Bryant said April 27 during a conference call with the Cleveland media.

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said the organization was confident Bryant had matured after sending defensive line coach Joe Cullen to work him out before the draft.

“Looking into his background with coach Cullen out there, as well as our scouting staff, we felt like [Bryant] is past the mistakes he has made and ready to move on,” Chudzinski said April 27 during a news conference.

Bryant’s agent did not immediately reply to a message from the Beacon Journal seeking comment.

first off, Armonty has got to be smarter especially considering his past. It looks like he will be fully entrenched into the NFL's substance abuse policy right off the bat.

also, any driving while intoxicated is bad.

So, he did signal, but just didn't turn it on until he stopped at the stop sign. And, that was enough to pull him over? That seems incredibly over-bearing.

And, perhaps Oklahoma is different, but I didn't think you could get arrested for public intoxication while being driven home. That seems incredibly over-bearing as well (going directly from one private location to another while being driven by someone else in a private car - how is that public intoxication?).

And, I tend to lean towards police rights. But, this seems too far to me.
For what its worth a DUI is stupid but I don't honestly care about them. As far as I am concerned it is good news he is just getting drunk and not getting high on anything. Another silver lining, it doesn't sound like his passenger had any drugs either.

Hopefully this knucklehead gets his head straight and orders a cab from now on.
Scouts I follow on twitter think this kid is talented. Too bad he's going to drink himself out of the league in a year.

On your first statement, my guess is that the officer suspected drinking... the technicality is all he needs to pull someone over to check them out for a DUI. When someone is out at that hour with a passenger, it is a better than average chance that the driver has been drinking, IMO. It bodes him well to do the routine stop.

On the second one, we don't know the details... for all we know the woman was being a witch and saying stupid crap, so the officer gets tired of it and arrests her for public intox. Not saying that's how it was, but just that there is a large lack of details there.... it could be anything.

Bryant needs to hope and pray that someone in this organization REALLY likes him, or he is about to be unemployed.
If I'm in this front office, I sit him down and make it excruciatingly clear that he has just used up his one and only get outta jail free card and that he is not on the Hot Seat.
...more words: we passed on Chris Gragg for him

Hopefully, that's the last we heard of him off the field, but it's not looking good. Instead of keeping his body fresh and treat his body like a professional athlete for the upcoming rookie minicamp, he does this
At least it's not as bad as getting caught for soliciting a prostitute when you have a wife and kids haha.

Good thing we paid Groves like $2 mil and got this other dude in the 7th!

Hopefully this clown stops all this because from what I've heard the dude has got some skills.
Get this person out of E. Central Oklahoma, pronto!
There is probably not alot to do in E, Central Oklahoma,
Threre is probably not much good you can do after 2 am on a Thursday night.
This guy is not an idiot, he just made a stupid decision. He probably won't be unemployed, but he does need to get off of that Po-Dunct campus; and headed in the right direction.

He probably wasn't even that drunk, but that's the thing, you don't have to be that drunk, and they still give you a dui, and sometimes people get killed in wrecks with drunk drivers.

They need to get some responsible, professional, people around this guy, to get his head on straight, and making right decisions; and part of that is getting this guy out of a one horse town, where he's probably a big to-do and there's nothing fun to do except party and get into trouble.

He's gonna play linebacker.?

Eh, don't blow it out of proportion... a night of drinking isn't a case of not "keeping his body fresh". It's just a case of a night of drinking and he was barely over the limit.
Not bright, and I'm not excusing it, but don't make it more than it is.
“Now that I’ve gotten that second chance, I feel like I won’t let anyone down. I won’t let myself, the people around me or the Cleveland Browns down. I appreciate them for taking this chance on me.”

I guess the silver lining is that he was only a 7th rounder, but this disappointing nonetheless. A week after getting drafted?

Well Bubba, a lot of things can go wrong. This is the Browns we are talking about, right?

In the end we are only going to keep 3 TE's, and we just signed those guys. I doubt they were going to cut the guys they just signed to keep a 7th round TE.

At least that's the way I have it figured.

They could keep 4 tight ends. I think with the ending of both Watson and Alex Smith, they'd be better off to keep 4 tight ends and see how things shake out.
Maybe they can call them H backs and line one of them up at fullback.
Well, this is a bummer.

What is it with people in Oklahoma and getting DUIs?

I agree with TL. Get him out of there. Drankin and drivin. Good grief.
To my knowledge getting a DUI won't get him immediately suspended like a failed drug test. When you are smoking pot you're basically going to fail any drug test within the next 2-3 weeks as a minimum. So I am happy the guy switched over to alcohol. He blew a .10 which I consider the upper acceptable limit for "I'm good to drive it's cool". Considering his driving infraction was innocuous and his blood alcohol level so low I'm not particularly upset with the guy. Its not like he was swerving all over the road and blowing a .20.

I'm not the kind of guy who cares at all about people using drugs or violating the law. As far as players are concerned I just want them to avoid anything that will get them suspended. For example I could care less about Groves prostitution bust.

But hey, not everyone agrees in life. Most people will consider a DUI a bigger deal than me.. and I'm fine with that

Good point... Groves and Bryant are in the same position group. It will be interesting to see how these two incidents influence the roster decisions.
Braylon Edwards wasn't suspended for his DUI ..... so I don't believe that Bryant will be.

He would be subject to the league's substance abuse policy if he fails a drug test. (however, I think that the point would be moot for the Browns if he ever fails a drug test)
Well, this kind of reminds me of the Blackmon situation. I think he had a strike coming in to the league because of the 2010 DUI, then got busted right after the draft. Wouldn't be surprised if his 4 game suspension from this year if from that second DUI. Bryant may have the same thing.

If I'm Bryant, I want the 4-game to hit this year. There's a 20% increase in minimum salary from rookie year to second year.

Yeah that stood out to me too. what kind of decent officer charges the passenger? Sounds like he (the officer) prob. was looking for trouble or had an arrest mandate or a quota ...

plus Armonty was not too far over, had he been .22 that would be a really bad thing.

BUT not at all smart on Armonty's part! you cant get charged with DUI if you are not drinking at all. Better plan not to drink and drive.

We all partied when we were young, but right after getting busted once, right after getting drafted, right after promising not to do it anymore, he gets busted for ANYTHING? Even jaywalking -Armonty..!
Quote:

If I remember right, Someone asked Chud if he was being looked at for the DL or LB and Chud said the DL.

My first thought was, Now their gonna have to cut the guy. If they don't, then what kind of message does that send to the locker room? With Banner & Lombardo picking on Gordon about stepping it up and keep improving(don't get me wrong, we all want that) but, to come out and say things like that to the media about a rookie, with a yr. off and no camp, doing as well as he did, was just wrong IMO. If we keep Bryant now, that sends the message to Gorden that he better tow the line, but Everybody else can do whatever they like. Not a good thing.
This is very disappointing. I was hoping he would get it after being busted and then drafted. Apparently not.
Sorry about the rant. Somethings just get under my skin. It will be interesting to see how they handle this.
It's okay to rant, my man. It's about all we freaking have as Brown's fans.

I wouldn't cut him yet. He would be on a short leash. He was a 7th round pick. Not a huge deal.

I may not be right about this, but Gordon came in w/even more baggage. He got busted numerous times and even got caught doing the same thing AFTER he got kicked out of one school. He cost us a second round pick Far cry from a 7th.

I say keep them both and pray they don't screw up again, even though the odds of that happening are not very good.
Just because they don't cut him, doesn't mean they endorse his behavior.
For the reason they decided to Pick him, when he had issues, if they decide to Cut him for an issue, near around 2 weeks later, then that would make the decision to pick him in the first place look stupid. And it would be flip flopping.

So unless it's something completly unacceptable, they kind of have to keep him to save face, at least through training camp.
What happens if we just don't sign him? Don't his rights get carried over till next year's draft? If so, I just don't sign him and then see if he is still an ignoramus later on.
That doesn't make a lot of sense.

You just say thanks, no thanks.

At this point you won't have a lot of money, if any invested in him......I say bring him in.

His flub up could be our gain at this point.
I agree. I would also bring him in. I was just trying to think of alternatives to cutting him.
Quote:

I agree. I would also bring him in. I was just trying to think of alternatives to cutting him.

I don't think 7th rounders demand much guaranteed money to begin with. Now....maybe you guarantee a Delta ticket home and a few thousand in expense money to keep him working towards a football career over the next few months.
Some people are always looking for an excuse to fail. I said the same thing with Gordon in that he was looking for a way to flop. Seeing a shrink, getting his mind right helped him. I think Bryant is doing the same thing and needs serious help.
No one looks at life in order to fail. The kid, and yes he is a kid, made a bad mistake and choice, now it is how he handles the issue and where he goes with that is up to him. Millions of people do this and it comes down to how they handle what happened. He can learn from it, or be bitter, but in the long run he has to choose the path in which he takes. Let us all hope he chooses the right path and learn from the event in which he put himself into and not to become a statistic.

I believe in second chances, and I have no problem giving him one, I hope for him to rebound, understand the situation he put himself into and regains his true balance in life, but it it is all on his shoulders. I hope it is a lesson learned and he doesn't repeat the mistake made. The ball is in his court, how he plays it is up to him. I wish him well.
I don't believe that alcohol counts against the substance abuse policy. Edwards was never suspended for his DUI.
That's ok, we can't be right all the time.

http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=6937845&src=desktop

an Francisco 49ers wide receiver Braylon Edwards was fined $50,000 for violating the NFL policy on substances of abuse, the team said Tuesday.
If I remember correctly Edwards got hit with reckless operation, which is nothing more to a police officer an OVI reduced. Still he is labeled as an OVI offender, just as the average person. Edwards, still will be considered an OVI offender especially if he is on the road anytime after 10pm and a police officer runs his plates. Though he might not have the OVI on his record, he still will be considered as a offender. He will live with the big X on his back for the rest of his life.

Side note: The NFL has the free ride policy after drinking policy with no questions asked, why the players don't utilize this makes no sense. Edwards made a bad choice and lucked out.
I'm wrong from reading your link, but man oh man did he luck out. As they say money talks and BS walks. The regular "Joe" would be screwed. Thank you for the link.
Maybe it's that alcohol doesn't count towards suspensions.

There is a different category for alcohol related arrests.

Please stop trying to justify drunk driving. Drunk drivers kill thousands of innocent motorists and pedestrians each year, just in the USA.

You get arrested for public intoxication when you are drunk on a public thoroughfare whether driving or not.

Drunk driving is not "bad." It is murderous.
Yep it's almost as bad as texting and driving

All I can say is what a wasted pick.

my son and his mom just got into an accident yesterday because some 18 year old (with her mom in the car ) with temps was texting and ran a 2 way stop sign. The 18 year old also tried to tell my sons mom that it was her fault because ... my sons mom didn't hit the brakes when she saw the girl running the stop sign. Luckily, my 11 year old son walked away unharmed and everyone else did too.
So glad all are OK!

1. Most important to Bryant & his future with the Browns. How will this effect his PROBATION (5 years)? If he has to spend time in prison (Felony) he is done I would think.

2. I don't think he signed a contract with us yet - I don't see how the NFL can fine him or anything if he is not part of the NFL as of yet. He'll probably come into the NFL of course with his first X.

3. The guy definitely doesn't seem to be a bad guy. He got caught selling $20 worth of Pot twice (assume the same night with two different undercover cops) but being close to a school he got the max. I'm trying to think about that...in my day maybe a Nickel Bag as they called it? All from a previous arrest n a kid with a good lawyer setting this all up to get out of his arrest.

4. Driving a drunk friend home. Stopped for a bs reason - I don't think he received a ticket for the presumed offense.

What I see is a small town with a police force that probably resent college kids & their free party mentality so they wait for them to get off campus property to arrest/fine/whatever.

Character flaw? I don't know it doesn't seem so. Now with 300k+ we know he won't have to get by economically by selling $20 bags of pot. The DUI thing - obviously he was driving a kid home that had no business driving. He did not weave, speed or any tell tell signs of a drunk driver.

I hope he gets here...Gets his opportunity n stay out of trouble. The key will be the break of Probation - what are the repercussions of it. If it stays on his permanent record instead of expunge...a shame - if he has to spend time n jail? I think a travesty to justice. Hopefully Haslam can spare one of his Lawyers n get this kid out of this mess. I think he is not a BAD KID with some Thug behavior. Just a kid who needed some cash & taking care of friends like the "BIG" guys sometimes do.

I'm definitely give a kid a chance type of guy! I just don't see bad Character in this kid.

I haven't read this thread or any media reports on this subject since the news broke that Bryant was arrested for DUI. I imagine that opinion is all over the place, a few wanting to give the player a pass, some wanting him cut.

At this time this 7th round pick is an asset that cannot be carelessly thrown away. Everything associated with this incident has to be examined before any decision is made about the player's future with the Browns. I'm hoping the FO looks into this situation in terms of how it helps or hurts the team. I just want the best decision for the club.

After a night to sleep on it, I really don't want to throw the kid to the curb. It just sucker-punched me, just after he said he was going to show everybody how he wanted to turn it around. I guess he still can. What a way to start

I'm still miffed at Lombardi for trashing Gordon last year and now comes in our house acting like the kid better shape up or else. I know, maybe I'm exaggerating, but he's gone out of his way for yrs. to trash us and I don't care what anybody say's, it wasn't all the job, dude has no business coming back here.

Cleveland Browns draft pick Armonty Bryant pleads no contest to DUI charge, receives 1 year deferred sentence

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns draft pick Armonty Bryant today entered a guilty plea/no contest to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence in Oklahoma's Pontotoc County District Court. He received a one-year deferred sentence and was ordered to pay $1,136 in fines and court costs.

Bryant must also listen to a victims-impact panel on the perils of drunk driving, according to John Hubbard, an assistant district attorney in Oklahoma. He also must attend a substance-abuse screening panel within the next 180 days.

Bryant's suspended sentence last October from his felony charge of marijuana distribution does not change as a result of this DUI conviction. Bryant and his attorney, Frank Stout, were in court today.

Bryant's arrest early Friday morning came less than a week after he thanked the Browns for taking a chance on him in the draft because of his marijuana arrest in October and vowed not to let them down.

Bryant, a pass-rushing defensive end, also refused to blow properly into the testing equipment and argued repeatedly with the arresting officer, according to the police report. Readings showed blood alcohol levels of 0.10 and 0.09. The legal limit in Oklahoma is 0.08.

The Browns must decide if they'll bring Bryant in for rookie minicamp Friday through Sunday or perhaps even cut ties with him.

"We are aware of the incident and are now in the process of collecting more information,'' team spokesman Neal Gulkis said in a printed statement. "We will not have any further comment.''

Bryant's arrest comes just two weeks after linebacker Quentin Groves, signed as a free agent in March, was arrested in a sting operation for soliciting a prostitute. Groves' arrest occurred on April 17, during the team's voluntary minicamp.

The Browns will apparently stand by Groves, who pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct and paid $365 in a fine and court costs, but will they send a message with Bryant? The Browns just might decide that the promising pass-rusher is more trouble than a seventh-round pick from Division II East Central University in Oklahoma is worth.

• Browns should back away from Bryant: Pluto

Bryant was arrested in October -- during football practice -- for selling $20 worth of marijuana to an undercover police officer in a university parking lot on Sept. 12 and 13. He was charged with felonious distribution of marijuana and suspended by the team for three weeks after receiving a suspended sentence.

On draft day, Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said the team checked into Bryant's background and felt comfortable enough to draft him, especially after defensive line coach Joe Cullen flew to Oklahoma to work him out. Bryant was one of only five players selected by the Browns in this draft.

"Through the course of looking into his background with coach Cullen out there, as well as our scouting staff, we felt like he is past the mistakes that he's made and ready to move on,'' Chudzinski said. "He's matured.''

Bryant (6-4, 263) assured reporters during his draft day conference call that he was a changed man.

"Good people make mistakes, is something that I’ve always been told by my head coach,'' Bryant said. "I feel like it was just a stupid move on my part. I should have been more mature about the situation and be more focused on football, which is something I really want to do with my life. Now that I’ve gotten that second chance, I feel like I won’t let anyone down. I won’t let myself, the people around me or the Cleveland Browns down. I appreciate them for taking this chance on me.”

Bryant, the 217th overall pick, was surprised to be drafted at all. "I expected to be a free agent and hopefully someone took a chance on me,'' he said.

If the Browns stick with him, it will be because of what they saw on tape and their belief he can turn himself around.

"He’s an explosive, speed off the edge, good sized defensive end who can apply pressure to the quarterback,'' said Chudzinski. "He’d be that type of player in our scheme. He can put weight on. I think he is 265 or somewhere in that range. He has a big frame and is real raw. He’s a guy that you look at that you are excited about what he can be if he develops and works at it.''

Bryant was pulled over at 3:46 a.m. on Friday near Norris Field, the stadium where he starred for East Central. At first, Bryant told the officer he hadn't been drinking and that he was just driving a friend home from a party. Later, he admitted to having a few drinks.

The officer tried to administer the state's blood test six times and each time, Bryant replied, "I just don't want to lose my driver's license,'' according to the report.

The officer wrote that he observed Bryant "to have slurred speech, to have a strong odor associated with an alcoholic beverage...and to be unbalanced on his feet.''

I dont believe the Browns will cut ties with him at this moment but will make it clear that his 2nd chances are now over. Any off the field incident from here on will result in his release.
One year deferred sentence and this doesn't impact his suspended sentence on a felony?

Hehe, some skids were definitely greased for him in the background on this one (perhaps keep an eye on campaign donations flowing toward Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, hehe).
Basically, he's been given a one year shot to straighten up and show himself to be a player.
OK the felony thing...which is ridiculous $20 of pot or $40. Remains just now I think he doesn't get it expunged which is a big thing (he will have a felony on his record for the rest of his life). For those who think he got away with something. Expunged and not expunged there are probably guys caught with a ounces of heroin getting better deals.

DUI...man a dumb thing, big guy so probably the most sober of his group - then again who is at their smartest after drinking. Hope he takes advantage of that Taxi service most NFL teams have available to their players. I know my son got a ticket driving a drunk friend home at his University (friends 21st party) thank goodness my son didn't drink at all. Forgot what the ticket was but some silly reason. So glad my son wasn't that Buzzed guy who was able to drive. And I'm caught in between cause on the other spectrum are innocent people dying from Drunk drivers but those drunk drivers are wasted drunk drivers. Not the ones driving 5 miles under the speed limit n not breaking any laws but because these are police in a small college town no reason to ruin their lives - Go get the idiots drunk out of their mind n blowing through red lights, stop signs, etc. Hopefully you get what I mean. Drunk driving is terrible - but not to be picked on to a degree around campuses where the POOR KID can't get out of trouble with a good lawyer. He's the one who gets his life ruined.

JMHO - hope we keep the kid n give him his opportunity...I think the loyalty we will receive back will be great!
It would be pretty silly for the Browns to cut Bryant loose because of this in the light of what situation the owner is in right now. JMO.

I hope the kid makes it and changes his life for the better ... JMHO
jc

I glad the team didn't cut him but obviously he has no other passes here. Hopefully, after hitting the bottom the kid will be stronger for it, whether here or somewhere else.

Personally, I see this guy as a DE in our 34 even though the kid played a DE in the 43 (right?) Apparently reports from Berea are saying this kid is just massive..a giant. He seemed to like playing with his hands in the ground.

There is a vid of an interview from today.. Soft spoken kid.. If you didn't know about his troubles, you'd never suspect him of wrong doing.. funny how that works

Definitely soft spoken. I thought he handled the media rather well for a young kid addressing some rather serious stuff.

The kid's best weapon/answer: "I'm not going to go into detail"...... He's learning and getting prepped at the same time.

Kinda funny the PR guy was basically on top of him.

The Joe Banner led Cleveland Browns continue to impress me as calculating (not in a bad way) by their apparent decision not to cut Armonty Bryant.

Browns considered severing ties with Armonty Bryant

Armonty Bryant almost had a very short tenure with the Browns.

The seventh-round pick was arrested for DUI only six days after being picked. The Browns considered renouncing their rights to the defensive end, who had been arrested in October 2012 on a marijuana charge.

“We discussed all the options and ultimately decided that we wanted to bring him in and sit down and talk to him, and that’s the process we went through,” coach Rob Chudzinski said Friday, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

“You have to give guys every chance, every opportunity, and I feel really good about the structure that we’ll have around him to give him every chance. He’ll be evaluated consistently and constantly just like all our players are, and time will tell.”

Actually, the rule is that the good players get a second chance, and the slappies become the examples. Since it’s too early to know precisely where Bryant falls on the football-skill spectrum, he’ll get a chance to prove he’s not one of the guys who lose their jobs when they get in trouble.

Bryant said that defensive line coach Joe Cullen, who had past issues with drunk driving while working for the Lions, has helped the rookie work through a difficult situation.

“He’s actually had my back and he’s helped me through this situation also and I feel like he’s a great mentor,” Bryant said of Cullen. “I just made a stupid mistake at the time. But now I’m just going to let my actions speak for me.”

Even without the arrest, a seventh-round pick is hardly a lock to win a job on the 53-man roster. It could end up being harder for Bryant, regardless of whether he picks up a third strike.

Even if this is just a PR piece it suggests that the team is willing to give Bryant a good look before making a knee jerk decision on his future with the club.
At that is how it should be.

He got a DUI. He wasn't out raping kittens and sacrificing puppies while riding goats backwards and listening to Pat Boone (who, along with Scott Baio, really is the Devil).

It was a stupid mistake, he has an opportunity to make it right, but there should be no doubt in his mind that he is on his last chance.
No argument here.
and the guy was under a .10 it's not like he was driving around at a .30
I may be completely in error, because it was so long ago, but, Wasn't Chris Carter an example of one of these of type situations working out in the best possible way.
The point being, It can happen.

Basically, a guy his size maybe had two or three beers or beer and shot in less than an hour. Yep, it doesn't take much to hit .08. Media is making it look like this guy needs a little quality time attending AAA meetings. I'll bet Bryant thought he was perfectly fine and was shocked.

Yeah, the media thinks he needs him some automobile knowledge.
