Tonight marks the return of Conan to TV - I for one am very excited. Anyone else plan to watch TBS at 11pm?

Conan O'Brien reclaims late-night spot with new cable show

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Comedian Conan O'Brien returns to the late-night television circuit Monday with a much-anticipated new show.

Actors Seth Rogen and Lea Michele will be guests on the first episode of "Conan," which airs Monday at 11 p.m. ET on TBS.

But the veteran host is keeping mum about a mystery guest -- the winner of an online poll.

A guest lineup schedule posted on the new show's website says: "You clicked and we listened! Who will be the poll winner: The Pope? The Sultan Of Brunei? Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner Gerhard Ertl? WATCH AND FIND OUT!"

There's one person who probably won't be taking the stage in O'Brien's Burbank, California, studio any time soon: Jay Leno.

"He can come as the musical guest, because that I want to see... No, there are certain things I will not do, regardless of the price," O'Brien said in an interview in the December issue of Playboy.

O'Brien has been off the air since January, when NBC canceled Leno's primetime hour after disappointing ratings led to an affiliate revolt.

NBC paid O'Brien and his staff an estimated $40 million to clear the way for Leno to return to the "Tonight Show" host chair he handed off to O'Brien last year.

The settlement left O'Brien free to launch a competing show after September 1, 2010. TBS announced plans to bring O'Brien onboard in April.

The cable network is owned by Turner Broadcasting, the same company that owns CNN.

The ouster of O'Brien after just seven months on the show stirred his friends and fans -- dubbed Team CoCo -- to launch a variety of anti-NBC protests.

Actors Tom Hanks, Jon Hamm and Michael Cera are among the guests slated to appear during the first week of O'Brien's new show. Musical guests Jack White, Soundgarden and Fistful of Mercy are also scheduled to perform.

From 1993 to 2009, O'Brien hosted "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on NBC. He is also a former editor of the Harvard Lampoon and writer for "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons."

When I saw this thread, I was hoping the Indians had traded to bring Coco Crisp back, doggonit.

Nope. He isn't that funny and 11pm is WAY past my bedtime.

Not a big late night TV guy.. even when I'm up I'd rather watch CSI reruns... the monologues are sometimes a little funny but I'm usually not all that interested in what is going on in the lives of the celebrities they interview..

Darn, I thought you were going to post a pic of Ice T's bootylicious wife!

I'll definitely be watching, but I have this eerie feeling that this won't work for Conan. The ratings will start off extremely high but falter down the stretch. It will be interesting to see if his ratings can hold up over the long haul.

Eh... depends on what expectation TBS has for Conan's show. If they are looking to compete against Leno and Letterman, then you may be right.

However, TBS, like most cable channels, have traditionally conceded the 11pm hour and left late-night to re-runs and infomercials. Conan has a pretty decent following and if TBS can improve its ratings at 11pm and turn a larger profit with late-night programming, then he'll be a winner. I don't think he has to challeng Leno and Letterman for that to happen.

As much as I used to watch Carson and Letterman when I was a kid, I'm the total opposite now. The last late show I watched was Conan's final episode...and before that? Jeez, maybe the Letterman show after 9/11. And don't even bother asking about Leno, that guy is a turd.

Some of the skits are funny but I can't get past the format of the show. They tell jokes about celebrities and politicians for 5 minutes, run through a skit or two (which usually aren't funny), and then bring on a bunch of actors or musicians to talk about their latest project (marketing). It's not much different than the Price is Right...a show pimping products in a way that's not obvious. So really, it's one big commercial (with the normal commercials you have to fast forward through).

Meh.

I'll probably watch tonight, if I can remember. Which I won't.

LOL What's he got to be mad about? $40 mill to go away....WOW...

Anyway, I didn't care for Conan much.. Didn't hate him or anything, But wasn't a fan either. If I happen to be up and flipping through and run into his show,, maybe I'll watch, but more than likely I won't.

You should wash your mouth out with soap, after bashing The Price is Right like that.

Jimmy Kimmel is the show to watch for late night.

Opening bit not very funny
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: Coco Returns! - 11/09/10 04:13 AM
...Yeah every guest they have is trying to sell a book, CD or movie.

Outside of the openning monologue it's like a Hollywood infommercial. Nah......

Monlogue, not so funny either

Having worked in late night TV extensively ... bingo.

The monologue is always lame ...

The interviews are always lame ...

The only thing that has a chance are what is called 'desk pieces' ... the skits put together between the rest of the junk ...

It's often junk itself, but occasionally one can hit gold ... and that's the meat of late night TV.

I'll give it some time, but something just seemed like it was missing last night. Conan was more jittery during the monologue than I can ever remember him being.

The backround on the set did look nice though.
Posted By: bigdatut Re: Coco Returns! - 11/09/10 10:19 PM
Agreed.

I'll watch going forward because I love the guy's show(s), but I remember thinking last night that if this was my first time watching his show I'd have already turned it.

It just seemed disjointed or as you said - something was missing.

Perhaps that something is Max - WHERE'S MAX?! lol

I wonder what knd of budget discrepancy he has from NBC to TBS, I would have figured they would have been a bit more over the top for the first few shows, not the case though.
