Boy-oh-boy-oh-boy.... I'm not gonna lie to ya'll here: I'm somewhat expecting another calamity today, or something close to it. I hope I'm wrong.

...I guess I still haven't recovered from last week!?!

Please, please, Johnny be good!

i so miss 6-3..oh well

im ready for better qb play
Posted By: Spiritbro77 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 04:42 PM
This is probably going to get ugly fast. Stewart is on a tear right now and we can't stop the run. Joe Haden isn't playing.... our secondary is now in the same boat as the rest of our D. Injured and undermanned. Add inn a rookie QB and an porous offensive line and it doesn't look good.....
Posted By: Swish Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 05:07 PM
Let's just hope for some type of effort, ANY type of effort from our squad today.

The panthers still have a huge shot at making the playoffs, they are gonna be serious about this.

So let's see what Manziel has today.
Posted By: Rishuz Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 05:10 PM
After the LaCanfora report I don't see the team giving any effort.

Why he report say?
Posted By: Dawg_LB Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 05:13 PM
Johnny Win, or Johnny Fail... whose it going to be?
Posted By: pblack18707 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 05:21 PM
johnny win. I think today he will show why we drafted him.
Without the 'must win' pressure that was there last week and hopefully a wake-up call on how tough it is execute plays at this level, I'd expect to see J.M. [no Johnny Football until you show you can win :)] show a decent amount of improvement...If we see the same horrendous mechanics & breakdowns as last week then we are in tough shape.

One thing I want to see is how his Leadership skills are when there is nothing left to play for and how he pushes the huddle and keeps the Offense engaged and focused. Will the team rally around him today?

Posted By: Spiritbro77 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 05:52 PM
They have a defense, we don't. And now that Haden is out that's even more so.... They have a running game, we don't. Since Mack went down we are worst in the league in YPC. They have a veteran QB we have a rookie... They are set in their offense, for some reason we seem to want to change everything for Johnny instead of having him run the O we've ran all year.
It's of course possible we could eek out a win. Hoever, it's highly unlikely.
Could Stewart get the single game rushing record today?

Ahhhh ok thanks.

Well, let's hope this was just a case of the nerves getting the best of him this time.

Hopefully it's to a bare minimum today.

It's a pretty good article, I posted it under the Johnny Manziel discussion in the Pure Football forum. Some of the posters think it's nothing but sour grapes by the writer.

Pettine just LOVES his defense.... LMAO

He enjoys an opening drive walking it right down the field and since we can't do that he figures watching the other team do it will suffice....
How does the energy look on the 'D' - are we looking like we are playing to win?

I thought the first series was a little shaky, but they made a play in the backfield and the guy missed a much longer kick than it would have been.

I don't know. What you guys think?

Of course, if setting the tone is a quick 3 and out, we're not really setting much of anything.

Panthers stopped themselves. They were killing us running the ball then they throw twice in the RZ Should have just kept pounding the rock.

We need to be 3rd and short to make the defense play the qb run and open up the offense.
Dang - time of possession is 1:17 to 10:56...that a lot of pressure on the D

A couple were by design. I think he got antsy on another play or two.
I'd pick a defensive and then offensive lineman with the first 2 picks. Both lines are just crap to say the least

Hawk should have been laid out like that on the last big play, too.

Good throws, but Hawk was completely left out to dry on both of them.

We need to quick snap the next play after a questionable call like that.

Have a play in your pocket and run it. Don't give them time to review.

You're right. Could have been the bad snaps fault though.

I would've too. But at least we got 3 points out of it.
43 yard'er - points! More importantly the D got a 5 minute rest and they at least know we can score now!

Good kick Jarrett.

That catch was questionable... I watched it a few times, I don't know.

thank god for some sort of offense

And I don't think that I have ever heard him say that any play that benefits us should stand. crazy

I thought that Gordon had his hand under the ball, and the ball under control, and it was a catch.

This can only help JM's confidence.
Posted By: WVDawg54 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 06:44 PM
Well, the new kicker already made a FG that Cundiff would have missed!

The announcer said Hartley is "filling in" for the injured Cundiff.

My wife says "We cut him didn,t we?" Gotta love when she knows more about football than the guys they pay to call the games!
I'm not sure how they thought that was a catch. Looked pretty easy to call on the replay. Gordon again hurting more than helping. Should be an easy grab for a top tier wideout

Not tough. He had it and lost it (or didn't) going to the ground.

The ball was thrown where only JG had a chance to catch it. I thought it was a good throw and a GREAT catch. The refs didn't see it that way...

Carolina doesn't look too hot, lucky for us.
With Cam coming off an injury and probably not going to run at all, are we blitzing on D to get some sacks?

Another beautiful fair catch on a PR!!
Posted By: Spiritbro77 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 06:52 PM
Johnny might have fallen because it was a horrible snap. He had to bring down the snap and perhaps it threw off his timing and footwork.... He DOES need to seriously work on his mechanics/footwork in the off season. Should hire Mooch to help him.

Another thing JF needs to stop doing besides throwing off his back foot is to stop Jumping when he throws. That 2nd down play cost us a few seconds on the jump throw and perhaps the WR doesn't get tackled when he catches the ball.

Bigfoot is looking very bust like.... We SERIOUSLY need to get some linebackers this off season!
Might be the last of ol Rub
I'm going with - we respond in a 2-minute drill by JM where we finally get a TD before half and a huge momentum changer...seems like 2 minute drill would be where JM would excel [scrambling] with 2 deep safety coverage?

Our offense is barely ever on the field, or so it seems, and all we pretty much get to watch is our D out there...
True - just looking at scoreboard..as bad as we are playing we seem to shore up in the Red Zone...this game could be over already.

Don't you mean 3-4? If the Browns ran a 4-3 they'd probably get more out of Rubin, Taylor, Mingo and Sheard.

It was a designed run.

Why a designed run like that in the 2-minute drill? Everybody knows he can run so they have JM on the radar at all times..

Another shot at what? Being our future? Not likely. A win here doesn't make him a franchise QB.

If Hoyer stays in, will the playbook open back up and will Carolina have play back in pass D? Seems like a few quick passes and you can have them playing honest D.

Hamstring injury. Return is questionable.

Mingo's hand was trapped under the Pathers player's body. He couldn't pull his hand out as he was on top of the guy laying on his hand. Once his hand was freed he moved. Then got shoved.

I feel like our chances of winning improved, but everybody knows I don't hide the fact that I don't like Manziel. That direct snap call was stupid and shows why mobility is great in terms of escaping pressure, but stupid to put your starting QB on the line in a designed run.

A lot of you guys really want to fire coordinators? While we are just fire the GM, entire coaching staff because we are much smarter than them.

This has worked so well in the past. Sounds stupid to give a staff 3 years to implement a program and have the team get used to it. WE get what we deserve.

We are a better team with lots of injuries. We are on the upswing, though a rookie HC will make mistakes like anybody in a new position. We will be fine, but Pettine will need to grow for us to have consistent success.

Fine, lets cut Johnny and sign Hoyer to a 5 year 100 million deal. But we FIRE Farmer for drafting a guy that's a bust after two starts. And when Hoyer continues to suck next year, don't complain. Mr. 1 TD to 8 picks was what you WANTED....

Same old hoyer...
isn't a coverage sack just a failure on the QB to throw the ball away? The announcers just said it was a coverage sack...my limited knowledge just says why now throw it away?

If he threw it away and he was still in the tackle box (which he was), would've been intentional grounding. Loss of down and yardage.

No, we're in to morons judging a rookie QB's entire future based on one and a half games. Troy Aikman went 1-15 his first year. You guys would have cut him after two games.

The minute they drafted Johnny I spoke against it. A TINY QB that runs a lot. NOT a good combination. But to insist that he can't play after 1 1/2 games is stupid. NO one can tell what a QB will be like after that short a time. Certainly not some forumite

seems like we defend the screen well...another positive - enough of those and we will get a break! Bring pressure D! Maybe the large rotations will yield a benefit down the stretch!

You act like Hoyer was playing GREAT when they benched him. 1 TD to 8 picks was PERFECT football for you? You LIKED that and want MORE?

You act like Hoyer was playing GREAT when they benched him. 1 TD to 8 picks was PERFECT football for you? You LIKED that and want MORE?

I think the safest thing for the Browns to do is sign Hoyer and give him the starter job for next year. Tell Manziel he's the back up. He needs to do more sitting.

Then hope that Hoyer's struggles this year were because he hit a wall.

Trading up for a QB is idiotic.

Big turnovers with no TD's will really take the wind out of anyone sails.

...But on the other hand, 3 more points?!? Yea! lol

Plus there is no pressure and he has nothing to lose.. no playoffs, lose of starting contract money...why not play loose and show your toughness and versatility?

If we keep Farmer and company I figure they will keep Johnny and let Hoyer go. Then either draft a QB in the 3rd or later.... or pick up a journeyman Vet as a backup.

Then you're just sitting on two guys with little chance of being a success.

I don't think we will make a move for a high-end QB in this draft, but I certainly wouldn't call it 'idiotic'.

I do believe we have a team that's a fringe/viable playoff competitor if we just had a QB.

The odds of Hoyer or Manziel being that QB is slim.

Windows snap shut in the NFL very quickly. You have to make a move somewhere to shore up the position.

By rule he was, he had "given himself up". You can't take a handoff from a guy who is on the ground.

In any case, who cares. I am already wondering what QB we are going to draft.

For those that want to resign hoyer, he already turned down a backup money contract. If he signs with us he will want a big bump in money. Starter money. And for more than one year. You sign him, he IS your QB for the foreseeable future. So that's the decision right there. Do you want this guy under center for the next three or more years?

So you're 100% positive Mariota is going to be good?

Get on the phone with Farmer.

Not 100%. Are you 100% positive he won't be? It's always a gamble, I would expect you to know that. I like his tools, skill set and measurables. That's all anyone has to go on. I would expect you to know that too.

I'm not 100% positive any player in the draft won't be good.

Solid argument.

Let's give up 3 first round picks for an unsure thing.

Genius.

You don't know that what it would take, but your smarmy attitude makes it ridiculous to discuss so have a nice day.

This is a game day thread, take your petty argument to the pure football forum and create a thread

And there are illegal wedgies and "giving yourself up"

I'm learning a lot about the game of football today.
I would trade both #1's and Phil Taylor to get Jamies Winston.

Does anyone have any opinions as to why our running game has been so bad lately?

Is our poor QB play letting the D stack the box? Is our line really playing as bad as it seems?

Boy, Lanning can't put one in the end zone
If you really wanted to keep Hoyer, I bet he would take an Alex Smith type of deal.
Let's see the D fired up -- Turnover baby!

Since we lost Mack, we have the lowest YPC in the league. Losing Mack was HUGE.
Posted By: tru_dawgs Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 08:35 PM
Finally an in stride pass...beautiful... Team seems to respond better to Hoyer...well least seems more on page...probably more familiar play calls and scheming
Posted By: Rishuz Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 08:35 PM
I don't think we should get carried away with the sign Hoyer stuff because of one play.

But I think big picture thinking ...knowing where our two picks will be, the best thing for the Browns is sign Hoyer as the starter, make Manziel the backup, limit the question marks you draft in the first, and take some continuity into next year.

I think that's the best thing for the Browns.

That may be one of the best throws I've seen Hoyer make this entire season though. YAC is YAC, but in the >8-9 yard range Hoyer's accuracy is like 1%, but that throw was right on the money.

I bet we won't see JM this year...no reason to bring him out. He needs a lot of mechanics work so he won't learn much next week - focus on offseason. The Browns will use the injury as a reason to not play him and keep him healthy for next season - IMHO.

I bet we won't see JM this year...no reason to bring him out. He needs a lot of mechanics work so he won't learn much next week - focus on offseason. The Browns will use the injury as a reason to not play him and keep him healthy for next season - IMHO.

I think Manziel will be gone next season.

If Manziel is gone after 1 1/2 games in his rookie year? Farmer is gone too! you don't trade up for a guy that busts THAT quickly and survive. If Manziel is already a bust then Farmer gets fired....

Cam cares more about on field celebrations than being a good QB.

Farmer will not get fired. Manziel was a Jimmy Haslam pick!
still plenty of time...another TD O - come on!

Why would I? I'm no Johnny fan boy. But you act like Hoyer was playing AWESOME when he got benched.

Nobody is acting like he was playing awesome when he got benched. Correction, some of us are flabbergasted with the play of Mr. Football and would rather see a QB that at least knows the offense run it.

Maybe he wishes he never sent that txt on draft day?
Posted By: tru_dawgs Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 09:03 PM
What a cut...from Jonathan Stewart...and what a lousy game from us again...this was the most winnable game (from the end of the season)...no way we win next week
The defense is pretty decimated by injuries right about now.

We should have been able to score more than 13 points against the Panthers.

Well who coaches the D??? You know I have that answer!!
Posted By: E.Ryze19 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 09:03 PM
How many times has this defense gave up a big run at the end of the game to seal a loss
Posted By: Goose7 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 09:04 PM
We got losing streaks down

This team has no toughness, they are pansies and that's on this staff. .man I wish that trade for Harbaugh went through. ..I mean not like the 2 firsts we had did us much good

They are gassed, they've been on the field most of the game. We are weak on both sides of the ball right now. Lots and lots of work to do in the off season

Well, I guess when you play 45 minutes of a 60 minute game, you are bound to be exhausted due to inept O

They are gassed because they can't stop anything. This loss is on them.

Connor Shaw next week?

Anybody but Manzeil

Gmafb that this staff has proven they are worth keeping. And I guess you can't read that I was talking about last offseason

I will always love my Browns but my patience is getting thinner @ 7-4 I thought we would at least win 8 games this year and I know we have one left but I have lost hope superconfused ooo

Really? They played almost the entire first half
What a CLUSTER. We are back to square one guys.. Not ONE threat on offense. Defense can't stop a cold. God, we are HARD to watch.
Posted By: Kardyak Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 09:07 PM
this team doesn't give a crap about us fans. they only care about reeling us in for season tickets.

and Pettine can go kick rocks. i wish he was in his 3rd season here so he can be eligible for termination. instead he's gonna get another shot at conservative, idiotic playcalling.

That is 2 straight weeks they were on the field for over 38 minutes..that is a lot to keep asking for this late when you have a lot of injuries as well...
Posted By: Fishstix Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 09:08 PM
JFF sure looks tiny when standing next to Newton shaking hands
Posted By: Goose7 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 09:08 PM
We have two wasteful first round draft picks to look forward too

This defense has sucked almost all year. We get NO pressure. None. Can't stop the run at ALL. That's been true all year!
That's freaking ridiculous that you kick it back the Carolina...what a bunch of absolute losers!! It's getting really hard for me to continue being a fan of this garbage!

Both of you guys are right.

All Pettine did was preach toughness...physical and mental.

And all the team did was wilt when it mattered most...just like under every other staff.

Still have to stick with him.

Changing coaches is not the answer.

He should get a subpar review from Haslam and told he needs to improve.

But he needs to be given that opportunity.

This really makes you question the scouts and ability to evaluate draft picks for this team. Bring someone in who knows how to evaluate talent

Yeah giving up long drives and Stewart getting a ton of yards. The offense was not good, but sooner or later the D has to stop something.

Really? They played almost the entire first half

Yeah Pettine had to know we weren't getting the ball back.

He was more concerned about playing the odds so he wouldn't get questioned about it later.

For all his posturing of mental toughness, he usually shows very little.
Posted By: E.Ryze19 Re: Game Day Thread - Browns vs Panthers - 12/21/14 09:11 PM
They couldn't stop Stewart running down their throat, and Manzeil cant get a first down.

We took the lead and the defense gave up a score on like 6 plays..pitiful.

Absolutely, how many first downs did JF get? Not sure of the number but it wasn't many compared to Carolina

we still need a qb...

thats that "playin not to lose" crap that he's been doin all year. this guy has no cajones.
228 yards of total offense for the Browns today.

That is a cross between anemic and pathetic.

I hate to get too carried away, but I really have to wonder if we don't need a QB ........

Manziel hasn't had much of a chance, but he really hasn't shown much either. He looks like a guy who is going to need a great OL in front of him, and he was supposed to be the guy who makes his OL better. He also looks really, really small. I also wonder if the NFL hasn't caught on to how to play these running QBs. I hate to think that maybe we came in on the back end of the trend, instead of on the front of the trend.

I just don't know what to think. I know that we probably are a 9-11 win teams with just average, competent QB play ..... however the Center position has not only not helped this team, but has really hurt.

I have this really weird feeling that we will wind up making a play for Mark Sanchez in the off-season. I have heard that Pettine really likes him, and if he plays under control, in a limited manner, then that is a role in which he has been effective in the past. I dislike the guy as a QB, but as much as I dislike him, I think that we would be a 9-10 win team with him under Center.

*Sigh* I really don't know what to think. I am more concerned about Manziel with every passing week, and for more reasons each week.

*Sigh*

new coaches are just like politicians. they feed u all that BS to get u to rally behind them. once they get the job, all that talk is nowhere to be found. Pettine was nothin but a smooth operator his first month or 2 here.

[quote=Spiritbro77]Hoyer throws a pick..... then we get it back. Hoyer throws the pick. so all you Hoyer fans must be happy. We all know how you love those.... [/quote I know it's was only 1 and 1/2 games but I didn't even JM throw a deep ball. I guess that's one way over ball security
J/C ..... it was 4th and 13 when we punted. It's not like it was 4th and 1 or 2. There were 3 minutes left in the game. Punting was the right call.

Agreed!!! Whether we need another QB or not, I don't know, but a lack of competent QB play has held us back this season...
