Did something change on the site? I am getting full page pop up adds when I revisit the site. This has never happened before and is only happening on this site. I checked pop up blocker in chrome changed some settings that didnt help. Anyone else having this problem?

Well I did notice it is a google vignette. now have to figure out how to get rid of it. Whats strange is that it is only happening on this site.

Same thing happening to me but only when I'm on mobile.

Happens to me every time I log in.

Me too...

It's part of Google's "auto ads" feature where they automagically determine the best ads to display on a site, where, and when/how.

I hate it, too. It's annoying as Hell every time I log in from my phone to see what's going on (which is usually nothing because the season is dead).

It is supposed to increase the ability of a site to earn from the ads, and since traffic has plummeted so badly here with the pandemic and the proposition of no season, and thus little to talk about, I'm not exactly in a position to take steps that might further decrease the ability of the site to offset its expenses. As it is, the last two months the ads have only covered about half of what it costs to run it. It's in no danger whatsoever of going away, so don't worry there... I'm just giving a picture of where things are currently and why - as annoying as that ad type is - it won't be changing any time soon.

Bring back the Paypal button, with or without the respite from banner ads. You shouldn't have to operate at a deficit.
Posted By: PrplPplEater Re: pop up adds? - 07/09/20 08:26 PM
I've given it thought, and may do that.
The (stupidly) thing that prevented it in the last round of upgrades what that PayPal have changes to their API that I just never got around to implementing.

But only if you get rid of the blight that is the political forum.

I know that you don't like me all that much, but I appreciate that you have this board open to Brown's fans. The bottom line matters. I support you earning revenue. The distractions are not even that bad.

I would happily donate something to the board expenses. It probably couldn't be a ton, but I would definitely give what I can.

As for the political forum, I just with it could be pushed to the very bottom of the active forums list.

You should charge per post. Pit alone could get you an upscale office overlooking the lake. thumbsup

Seriously, Paypal would be the best way for me to donate, and I would gladly do so.

I sent prp a check. But, it was a long time ago.

If he just charged for every time you and the crew mentioned my name he could make a fortune. wink

Purp could double that if he charged for every post you make trying to get the last word.
Posted By: jaybird Re: pop up adds? - 07/11/20 02:07 PM
is it expensive to keep the board up and running?

I don't just try. I do.

Me too, but it was only $20 and it was several years ago.

Like I said earlier, he needs to make some money on this. The ads don't bother me all that much. I think the PayPal thing might be a good idea and I know I might seem prehistoric, but I never had a PayPal account or whatever it is called. Yeah, I'm old.

You put a Paypal or Venmo destination on here and I'll let some cash fly.

I’m also here wishing for an ad free donation button.
Posted By: Dave Re: pop up adds? - 10/30/20 11:50 PM
Just to add on here, I've started getting a pop-up ad here whenever I navigate out of a given forum back to the main page. Its pretty annoying.
Posted By: oobernoober Re: pop up adds? - 11/02/20 09:23 PM
The frequency of the ads definitely ticked up (for me) within the last few days.
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: pop up adds? - 11/03/20 08:05 PM
Yep. But I don't really mind. The board is free.
Posted By: jfanent Re: pop up adds? - 11/04/20 12:01 AM
I only get them on my phone, not on the laptop. It's no big deal to hit the x.
Posted By: PrplPplEater Re: pop up adds? - 11/11/20 05:29 AM
Same, though I have gotten some full-page overlay type ads on the laptop.

I no longer control the type or frequency of the ads; it is driven automatically by Google, so it kinda is what it is.
Posted By: OldColdDawg Re: pop up adds? - 11/11/20 07:10 PM
Hey Purp, did you ever consider something like Patreon for this site? Something where members can donate a few bucks every month to help offset your costs? Many of us who are here daily could set up a $3, $5, or $10 automatic donation on a card and just forget about it. Not sure how much it would help but I'm sure a hundred or two a month wouldn't be unwelcomed. Just a thought.

... still waiting for that Paypal button....

You can control it if you want. Google Adsense has different types of ad units.

Google is an evil company. You shouldn't trust them. They are now showing ads on your site at your expense. (degraded user experience).

I have lots of stories to tell about google. But I'll stop now.

Yeah, I have to figure out all the API changes that have happened since it was last working. Probably not a huge deal, but I basically have to re-learn everything I already did, then figure out what is new & different.

ok, yes, I *can* control it and limit it, but then they limit the earnings. The only way to maximize the earnings is to let them control the ad units. I can experiment with that...I *hate* the interstitial full-page ads that have been popping.

I used to have a PayPal link here and I had a system set up where if you donated some dollar amount within the last 12 months, it would automatically disable all ads. I really should bring that back.

I'm currently getting my house ready to sell and trying to find a place to move to, so I won't be putting any effort into this stuff in the immediate future, but perhaps after the New Year I can work on getting this stuff back to how it used to be, but within the updated framework of the site so that future upgrades/updates to the site won't break things.

I was just pulling your leg. Not seriously being impatient about the button.

The ads are annoying, but it's fine.

Test post for pics.

I am trying to post a pic but all that is showing is the link, which takes you to the link when you click it but the image does not appear on post. Is this possible on this site or not?
Posted By: PrplPplEater Re: pop up adds? - 11/24/20 12:01 AM
Yes, but the URL you use that points to the image must point to an actual image, not a CGI script. If the URL doesn't end in .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .bmp, etc.. it will not work.

Link test

Thank you. I think I may have it figured out now.

The good news: I have not been getting pop-up ads lately.

The not so good news: banner ads are now appearing in the middle of people's posts. Used to be they only appeared at the top and the bottom, now they run throughout a given page, and on two occasions in the last couple days they bisected a single post.

glad its not just me... thought I was tripping or something
Posted By: Dave Re: pop up adds? - 01/13/21 01:29 PM
This post by TTTDawg about Mayfield & Mahomes' first meeting contains 7 banner ads when I view it (not sure everyone sees the same display).

yeah, I finally found where to turn off the pop-up ads. I don't think I have control over the automatic banner ads while still having it do the automatic ads in general.
