I know this is a bit morose but I’m curious to see what others think.
With the death count over 80,000 currently, what do you think will be the final death count when COVID is finally behind us?
Posted By: Versatile Dog Re: How many lost? - 05/16/20 12:27 AM
What's the time frame? This summer? This year? The next few years?
Posted By: PortlandDawg Re: How many lost? - 05/16/20 12:55 AM
I guess I was thinking a vaccine, or to where it runs it’s course as crisis. It’ll likely kill for years to come on some level. So I didn’t really have a timeline nailed down.
I guess, to put a timeframe to it, I’ll say one year from today.

20 million cases, 3.5 million deaths. Felt this since March, if the USA gets out of this, when it's all said and done, a year an a half-two years later,
Get out of this with 3.5 million deaths Or Less and we Win! Bigtime. This is the 100 year flu, look at what happened other times, and back then, the world population was way less, exponentialy,
Earths population doubled, then doubled again like 20 years later, in the 20th century.

And it's going to suck, but if 20 million die from this, it's just something to have to go through. Anything less than 3.5 million is a win. I felt this in March,
On about March 29th, the angst hit it's peak, a day Cuomo was calling out about ventilator numbers, and cases were still expanding more in ratio with each passing day.

I felt that in March, and I don't totally disregard that feeling today, though do hope for better.

The 1918 flu, well I read an article, said they shut down for 6 weeks and it came back all summer long, after they opened back up.
Posted By: OldColdDawg Re: How many lost? - 05/19/20 08:26 AM
I went with the max before reading the thread because I don't think it's going to go away and we will deal with some version of it annually even after the vaccine. It will be like flus and colds taking lives every year even after the pandemic level hyper spreading bit is behind us. No way we don't eventually lose two million to it.

But until a vaccine is released, I'd guess half a million lives will be lost. I honestly think the body count is going to skyrocket starting in the next 21-30 days.
Posted By: PortlandDawg Re: How many lost? - 05/19/20 02:57 PM
Sadly I too see the death toll skyrocketing in the coming weeks/months. I’m not sure how anyone in this poll thinks well come in under 200,000 deaths. We’re already at nearly 100,000 after months of lockdown and social distancing being followed. Now that people are being freed to roam and with the decrease in mask wearing I’ve seen... its lunacy time think we’re not about to go through another heavy round of deaths.
Posted By: PortlandDawg Re: How many lost? - 10/07/20 02:04 PM
Revisiting this as we now have 5 people that responded that were overly optimistic. Guessing under 200,000.
Sadly we’re entering the cold months now where much of the country will be forced inside to commune with family and friends. (Not me. No one is coming into my house and I’ll not cross another home’s threshold.) My guess is the next 100,000 will come much faster than the the last 100,000.
My prediction was 300,001-400,000. I think 300,000 is almost inevitable at this point. I may have underestimated... tragically.
Posted By: Bard Dawg Re: How many lost? - 10/07/20 02:30 PM
Hope you are wrong ,or, at least, the worst takes longer to ring up those numbers. WH hasn't been right about much beyond Fauci. No tracking in WH really angers me. I said something like this earlier in the pandemic: If the first 200,000 didn't bother you, the second 200,000 probably won't either. With this as proof, we are clearly being deprived of "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness." Thoughts and prayers to the individuals making this worse.

no matter what the number ends up as, it will be WAY, WAY, WAY below the early catastrophic projections.
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: How many lost? - 10/14/20 04:25 PM
You mean the projections based on if nobody did anything. No masks, no social distancing, no shut downs. Since a lot of those things were done, you're most likely right.

What were the early catastrophic projections, can we put a number on that because the recent data has been, dang!
Posted By: PortlandDawg Re: How many lost? - 12/15/20 08:51 PM
Sadly we’ve crossed a new threshold. We’re now past 300,000 dead. 302,000 to be more accurate. With that there were 12 overly optimistic voters on this poll.
My personal guess from the beginning was in the 300,001-400,000 range. With vaccines now being out and in nursing facilities (I’ve heard some of my local facilities are going to start inoculations tomorrow.) my hope is we can slow the spread within our most vulnerable segments of our society. If so then I think we can get out of this crisis with fewer than 98,000 more lost souls.

World o meters has listed, 23 million total US cases from the start,

over 14 million recovered
over 9.3 million current cases,

and 397,994 deaths from covid in the United States.

with 4k dying per day, This January 15th,

Hopefully the leveling off and then waning away starts soon.
Posted By: PortlandDawg Re: How many lost? - 01/19/21 08:36 PM
We’ve now topped 400,000. That was my guess going in.
Sad day in our country.
Posted By: THROW LONG Re: How many lost? - 01/24/21 01:06 AM
World o meters, which I've used consistently from the start, had 402K some 3-4 days before the mega fake news went all milestone on the newsstory of 400K/Usa, so they're either counting differently or delaying reports.
Posted By: THROW LONG Re: How many lost? - 01/24/21 01:26 AM
I was expecting they would be getting close to a 415-417 + maybe number it was 8 days ago, these numbers were at 398+ and 4K per day sure to surpass 400K in those next 24 hours,
I wasn't expecting the 4 number, I just saw, kind of alarming,
8:11 pm, they read, USA,
Cases, 25,563,205 deaths, 427,588

that's 8 days.
8 days since 23 -- million, and 398-- thousand.
Posted By: THROW LONG Re: How many lost? - 01/30/21 03:02 PM
It's 10 am, not 8pm, looks like no full daily update.
World-o-meters.
26,514,275 - total US cases

447,490. deaths.

It's February 15th, 30 days since,

28,261,470 cases,

497,174 Americans dead, 9,540,008 open cases.

Will pass the grim milestone of Half a million deaths of Americans from Corona Virus in the next few days.
Posted By: jfanent Re: How many lost? - 02/15/21 12:46 PM
It will be interesting to see the numbers a month or two after spring break wraps up. Given that it doesn't seem anyone learned a lesson from last year when they turned a blind eye chasing the tourism dollars, and the fact that most citizens will not be vaccinated...I think we're looking at a substantial rise in cases/hospitalizations/deaths.
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: How many lost? - 02/15/21 03:47 PM
Thanksgiving didn't teach people anything. Neither did Christmas or New Years. If that didn't teach them anything I doubt anything else will.

Just yesterday they had 30,000 at a NASCAR race and a lot of people in the crowd weren't wearing a mask. It wouldn't be so bad if so many others weren't paying the price for their actions.

Keeping with taking numbers on the 15th of every month, today is the 15th. (Of March)

total cases, 30,105,071
US. deaths from covid. 547,572

Open cases, (falling number is good news), 7,348,021

recent 3 days
New daily, plus daily deaths US. (Source World-o-meters)

Cases 23,414---------338 deaths
Cases 36,896----------629 deaths
Cases 49,907----------1037 deaths again, recent daily US numbers. These are also decreasing, in rate, drastically from January which is good news.
Edit: March 15th 2021

Well it's the 15th April; Every 15th of a month.

Cases, 32,224,139
Deaths, 578,993

active cases, 6,874,166

Latest day. 74,479 new cases, and 895 deaths.
Posted By: PortlandDawg Re: How many lost? - 05/17/21 03:05 PM
The year has passed since I posted this. Looking back to the 15th of the month it appears as though the number on that day was 599,858 (it’s now over 600,000) total lost. RIP. May the families that lost loved ones to this scourge find some peace.

Looking at my poll there were three people that guessed correctly. Seventeen of the responders guessed on the low side. I was one of them. Guessing between 300,001 and 400,000. I think we could have been closer to that number if people had taken this all a little more seriously… from the then president on down.

That said, I’m thankful for the vaccine. Sadly there’ll be more death as the virus mutates and continues to take those that are immune compromised, more susceptible for other reasons, or those that continue to think this is some sort of a game of tough guy vs virus chicken.

Be careful out there. The poll is technically over but the virus is not. Let’s not add any of you to the numbers.

Is there any way to check and see what we voted? I'm pretty sure I picked 500-600k, but I can't remember back that far.

Well we've gone from Tax day, to the day after thanksgiving. It is Nov. 26th 2021, the day after Thanksgiving, and the night before the Ohio State Michigan game.

According to the numbers site I'd been looking at all along. World-o-meters has the US covid death number,
at 799,138. and still with an average well of the 5 previous days deaths numbers being, 1200ish for 4 of them, and 200-300 ish for the other two days.
So, on average, the United States covid19 deaths number is about to cross 800,000 in the next day or so, 24 hours.

Today was also the day, the television news' advertised the start, very first day of a new variant in S Africa, I don't even remember the name of it.
Posted By: GMdawg Re: How many lost? - 11/28/21 02:17 PM
It's the Oompa Loompa variant. In addition to catching and spreading covid, it causes your hair to turn green, skin to turn orange, and you shrink down to 4 feet tall. willynilly

Well, it's not over yet.
It's January 29th 2022, two days before the NFL conference championships games, Bengals-chiefs, Rams-49ers.

World-o-meters, United STates covid cases, from the start. Cases:
75,271,402 ---- that's over 75 million.
Covid Deaths in the United States, 905,661 that's 1.2% of the cases number and nearing a million Americans.

According to my previous posts, that is around 327-thousand Americans since Tax day of last April, the Tax day when a 2nd vaccine had received emergency use approval, and they were still expanding the age ranges eligible to get a vaccine, when appointments to get a covid shot were still being schedule, and the ages were coming down from those over 80 to those over 75, to those over 65 and medical workers, and news stories claimed rich Florida complexes, or prisoners were given priority to receive the vaccine. IIRC all of those correctly, it they weren't in April it was a recent memory like Jan-Feb of 2021.

But it's January 29th 2022, ... and even though the death cases per day had lowered into the 700-1600 range last spring todays (5 recent days death totals in the USA from covid reads.
3124
3408
3051
1377
1095, each day over 1000, and that's deaths of Americans from Covid, (no matter what variant name they give it)

There are 86,400 seconds in a 24 hour day, so on a day with 3051 deaths, that is one death every 28.31 seconds, somewhere in America.

(Even the, hour news update, which claims the "average daily deaths, of omicron, are now surpassing delta" ) I think is a false statement as earlier posts, remember iirc. would show some daily deaths upwards of 4000-5000 so depending on the number of days averaged, it may be similar but hasn't surpassed.) But! it's certainly surpassed the summer months where things seem to wane down and go better.
