Could the Cleveland Browns really give up on Corey Coleman already?

Author: Ben Axelrod
Published: 6:27 PM EST February 19, 2018

CLEVELAND -- As yet another era of Cleveland Browns football gets set to begin, turnover in Berea is all but inevitable. And one of the potential casualties of yet another regime change in Cleveland could be a player many some still have high hopes for.

According to Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland, the Browns could part ways with wide receiver Corey Coleman later this offseason. Grossi made the declaration on the Monday episode of The Really Big Show on WKNR 850, where he said that some in the Cleveland organization have soured on the former first-round receiver.

It was less than two years ago the Browns first acquired Coleman with the No. 15 pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, which they acquired following a pair of trade downs after initially owning the No. 2 pick. In his two seasons in Cleveland, the Baylor product has struggled to stay healthy, having already missed 13 games over the course of the last two years.

When on the field, Coleman has shown some promise but has largely been viewed as a disappointment -- particularly in relation to where he was picked. He's caught a combined 56 passes for 718 yards and 5 touchdowns in the last two years, topping the 100-yard mark in just a single game.

Off the field, Coleman has also underwhelmed -- which might be one of the biggest reasons why the Browns could be quick to cut ties. Although never charged, Coleman was investigated for a New Year's Eve 2016 incident, in which his brother and an associate were each indicted for felonious assault. Earlier this year, Coleman was named as a defendant in a lawsuit regarding the same event.

Last season, Coleman and veteran Kenny Britt were each sent home from the Browns' road trip to Houston for missing curfew. Coleman was still recovering from a broken hand at the time.

After Coleman dropped a fourth-quarter pass in Pittsburgh to clinch an 0-16 season for Cleveland, head coach Hue Jackson discussed the importance of the upcoming offseason for the 2016 first-round pick.

"Does he need to get better? Yes. Does he need to continue to work in our program and get better? Yes, he does. I think he will," Jackson said.

Should the Browns indeed opt to part ways with Coleman, there would be financial ramifications. According to Spotrac.com, a release pre-June 1 would result in $6,887,044 of dead cap space, while a trade by the same date would cause a $3,338,181 hit.

After June 1, releasing Coleman would cost $5,217,953 in cap space in 2018 and $1,669,091 in 2019. A post-June 1 trade, however, would save the Browns $1,509,545 cap space.

For a team short on talent, it would behoove the Browns to do everything they can to make 2018 Coleman's breakout season. But as Cleveland general manager John Dorsey showed with Britt, who he cut on his first day on the job, he's not going to let finances dictate how he handles his roster.

Consider the source, but it's interesting in light of the talk about bringing back Taylor Gabriel & Pryor. Another failed first round pick? rolleyes

In two years you sour on your tiny, yet historically productive, skill player core cutting Taylor Gabriel, Dion Lewis and Hawkins after two down years of QBs being unable to throw the ball to them. They go on to have successful seasons, besides old man Hawk. You then draft a slightly taller WR, who QBs still cannot throw the ball to and now want to cut him to be successful elsewhere. This team is so stupid, I swear.

Are the Browns done with Cory?...

That thought has crossed my mind..and I base my opinion on his play on the field.

If the Browns could get a decent draft pick for him..might be best to trade him.

Browns shouldn't give up on Coleman.

Side note about the Taylor Gabriel Comment: If Taylor Gabriel was smart, he'd go to SF where Shanahan is. That's the only time he has had legitimate success. The dude did absolutely nothing last year in ATL. In fact, the argument could be had that he has only had one decent season in the NFL.

Oh come on. There is nothing to this. We're talking about Grossi here. Who soured on him? The kid waving the orange gloves?

This is just someone who wants all Sashi's picks to fail. Coleman has had 2 freak injuries, hardly saw the field, he's seen 1 win during his time in the NFL and we've had the worst quarterbacks in the last two seasons...

And Grossi thinks we are going to cut him? Lol!! He's truly an idiot.

I think SF will pay him the most too.

I don't see the Browns cutting Coleman unless he is a true head case and a distraction in the locker room. I suppose that is possible. He went to Baylor and that school and it's conference is known for having some really bad characters.

Hopefully, that isn't the case and the Browns give him another chance. I will say that thus far, Coleman has been extremely disappointing on the field.

The Browns desperately need to upgrade their wide receivers.

Nope. If he once again missed considerable time due to injury then sure, I'd think it's not going to work out. Until then, NO, let's go into the season with as much in-house firepower as possible!

I don't see this having any real legs.

I doubt we just outright cut him. Why create another hole?

I suppose we might trade him, or if he has a bad camp and gets beat out by another player, I could see us cutting him then, but no, this is just a speculative piece.

If he gets cut, it will be a camp cut...and I doubt that happens.

I absolutely do not want to give up on him because first, he's never had a QB, second we haven't seen much of him because of the freak injuries, and third, he has flashed talent. The injuries and QB situation have been mentioned and they are valid points. I don't know about him being a head case. I did a commercial with him in 2016, and he seemed like a nice, dedicated kid who wanted to succeed. I'm sure he was on his best behavior, but we spent several hours together and chatted all through lunch. I'm glad Britt is gone, I will say that. Hopefully Grossi is simply up to his usual crap-stirring.

Not buying.

He has been a disappointment there is no question about that.

However, he would have to commit a felony to get cut.

He gets this year to prove his case as a football player or his career will be short.

There is nothing substantial in that Tony Grossi piece outside remarks that likely would've been made by any coach with a first round disappointment like Corey has been. Long story short:

Selected 15th overall

Always hurt

Missed a lot of easy catches, most were in keen situations

Even babied in camp and reps cut way down, with tons of rehab - he still gets hurt a lot

Made some really nice plays and leaps for catches

... thus far the negative supersede the positive with him, and I wouldn't be shocked if his role was just cut way, way short - but, I would be shocked if he was released. Unless he's just a toxis headpiece, there's not a way he gets cut. Maybe traded.

Horrible pick. I would guess he enter camp as the 7th receiver trying to make the team. Gordon, Higgins, Duke, possibly Pryor, maybe a Landry, at least one or two rookies. Grossi is wrong he will be cut this soon but he is not wrong in that he likely won't make the roster.

this article is dumb. had he not dropped the last pass of the season, this article wouldn't have been written.

I wish they'd pick a QB before they throw away another 1st round pick.. But hey if he can't stay healthy,, he doesn't really have any value..

I hadn't heard they were thinking about Gabriel and Pryor. I'd like Pryor back if he'll work.

Coleman was not the WR I wanted to draft but you need to give WRs a good three years before you give up on them. The thing that might cause him to be released though is not his play but his inability to stay healthy. I mean this cat just cant play half the time.

Browns won't part ways with Coleman. He was a Hue Jackson pick, and Jackson sounds really high on him still. Two years isn't soon enough to quit on him.

Possibly being leaked to see if someone makes an offer. Nothing can sour a team on a player like additional value.

He's certainly been disappointing, however, so who knows.

1. Never trust Tony Grossi

2. Corey Coleman has been pretty good when healthy. His two long term injuries were freak injuries.

3. If we keep Coleman on the roster he costs us $3,178,632 against the cap, if we cut him he costs us $6,887,036 against the cap. If we trade him he costs $3,338,176 against the cap. (I don't expect John Dorsey to manage the cap well based on Kansas City's current cap situation.)

4. We need wide receivers.

Coleman has been an enormous disappointment thus far. He has missed 13 out of 32 games, over his 2 seasons in the NFL. Even when Gordon came back, and drew attention from the defense, Coleman did very little. I would consider his position on the team is shaky, at best.

I'd support keeping Coleman .. he's been injured, inconsistent offense, doesn't cost a ton, and we suck at WR

In what way?

Gordon's biggest problem has been substance abuse, but look at what he accomplished after almost 3 years away from the game. He easily outplayed Coleman.

I think you underestimate Coleman... Other than being hurt I'm not sure what would constitute being a "horrible pick."

Coleman has been good when healthy. Flip flop him and Michael Thomas and we'd be talking about how we didn't, but should have drafted Coleman. Get him a quarterback.

No, we wouldn't.

I think this article is bogus and nothing more than click bait.

But to claim we would be wishing we picked Coleman over Thomas is just silly talk.

When has Coleman been good?

Coleman has also suffered from multiple soft tissue injuries, as well. Those are not "freak injuries."

I don't believe the report unless there are issues about his character that we have not been made aware of, but has been disappointing and thus far, has been an awful draft pick.

He is a poor route runner. He has dropped too many passes. He hasn't been consistent in a positive way. And he hasn't make that many flash plays.

If he had been a 5th round pick or lower, he'd probably be gone this year.

Wow, you mean he still has the same questions about him that he had in college, route running and drops? Being critical. I can’t really answer as to why he hasn’t improved in this area, maybe with all the missed time he hasn’t had the chance to develop? Idk

Don’t think he’s cut though. Unless we bring in his replacement and a second receiver, plus draft a guy or two, something that would push him way down the depth chart. But even then he wouldn’t be cut till probably into next season.

The point is Coleman would be no worse than Thomas if his quarterback was Drew Brees. The injury part not withstanding.

I know it's hard for some to believe, but the quarterback does make a difference.

Agreed. Coleman has been very disappointing. But our position group is extremely weak and he's only played two years (and missed a lot of time in them).

I'd say, barring being a true locker room cancer, give him year three to finally prove himself, and hopefully, show signs of progress in terms of route-running under Todd Haley. Haley has gotten a lot out of Pitt WRs, hopefully he can do the same with the under-whelming Corey Coleman

Oh I certainly agree that the QB makes a huge difference. Yet at the same time you can evaluate a player on "what he does". Thomas is a much better route runner. He catches the ball much more consistently than Coleman. And yes, I do believe that injuries play a part in any evaluation.

So while it's true that the QB plays a huge role in the production of a WR, there are certainly measurables based on the skill set of a WR that can be taken into consideration that separate each WR.

I don't see the two of them as being comparable in any way but if you do so be it.

You know, each his own.

Coleman isn't a terrible route runner as suggested. Thomas is better. Both had question marks coming out of college.

I think it's absolutely HUGE that Thomas has had the same QB throwing him passes since he's entered the NFL. Coleman has had what, 6? It makes a difference.

To think Coleman would be the same WR if he was playing with Brees and the Saints as he would be with the Browns and McCown, RG3, Kessler, Whitehurst, Hogan, and Kizer is ludicrous. And to think we'd have 1000 yds and 5+ TDs from Thomas in that scenario is just silly indeed.

Coleman building chemistry with the same QB would pay huge dividends for the Browns... This thought of releasing or trading Coleman is a complete farce. I wouldn't put stock in anything Grossi says.

Coleman's claim to fame was his speed and big play potential after the catch.

He was the #1 rated WR in the draft for a reason and after 18 games there's talk that the Browns are giving up on him? Nah.

I will say this, Vers would be right in saying it would be because of character issues, but that would be a bit hypocritical if we sign Landry wouldn't it?

Coleman has been good for us on the field, he needs more development but give the kid a chance, my goodness...

That's the thing. He rarely gets separation. I'm not seeing that speed at all.

If I was watching Coleman beat out his guy and get open, I'd feel better.

I wouldn't say I'd be giving up on him though. Just, haven't been impressed yet. He's either not on the field or he's not making plays (because he's covered) when he's on it.

Hopefully he can stay healthy and get open. He's supposed to be fast, so it's hard to think of a reason he wouldn't be open except bad route running...........

We certainly agree that this article is garbage. Coleman isn't going anywhere. But having better hands and running better routes are both things you can determine no matter who is throwing the ball.

Our quarterbacks, McCown included, have done a terrible job leading our receivers for YAC. The thing is not just Coleman, but our receivers are open, the quarterback just isn't getting them the ball.
