I know that people enjoy Jake Burns's series on players, so here is his on 2019 WR free agents. I am not going t post it, mainly because of all of the video cut ups, but the link will take you right there.

when I watch these replays of free agent receivers I can remember similar plays made last season by our receivers and it makes me wonder if any of these guys is worth the price we would have to pay to get them.

our guys are all young and will get better with more time with baker. unless a real deal comes along I think we should go with what we have.

Of those listed, I would guess that Adam Humphries would top the list.

Talent that won't break the bank that can play inside or out, lives in the slot, and has familiarity with Monken. The only question would be whether or not there is a place for him given the guys we already have. If the coaches can find an easy fit, he would be my bet.

That said: I'd be surprised if we make any sort of big splash at WR.

This part was interesting...

Quote:
If the Browns have intentions of moving on from Landry after 2019, signing Humphries this year and using him all over the field only to take over the full-time slot duties in 2020 makes sense.

I made a similar comment in the other thread and was laughed at, being told that Landry isn't a slot receiver and he'll be here for a long time... Hmmm....

Well, that entire premise fits with my statement of "if the coaches can find a fit" because the role Humphries most logically slides into is currently filled by Landry.

That said, I can get behind the idea of having two guys that are crafty enough to play inside and outside. Defenses would be constantly uncomfortable trying to guess who was going where.

OK menZa’s riddle me this ...

If VG is a slot reciever why is he on the field for MOST OF IF NOT ALL OUR 2 WR SETS? ...

I’ll be waiting .... just because he does hs best work from the slot does not mean he’s a slot reciever ONLY ... if that were the case ...

WHY IS HE ON ALL OR MOST of our 2 WR sets? ....

I'll tell you that if you tell me where I said he is a slot WR wink

In fact, I'm pretty sure I stated very clearly that he is in a role here as someone that is both inside and outside, which is the same role a Humphries would fill here as neither is a *pure* X or Z. They're enough of a solid WR to be the X/Z, but they're shifty and crafty enough - and TOUGH enough - to play the Slot.

Furthermore, in our 2-WR sets, I believe we usually had Njoku at the Y taking the Slot role unless we were in a heavier protection set and had Fells or Charles there while also giving a Run look.

Jarvis is considered slot because he is most effective there. Doesn't mean he plays exclusively from the slot.

Also, he played 60% of his snaps this season out of the slot.

It's like you're arguing that Ken Griffey Jr. is not a CFer because of the 300 games he played in RF. Jarvis is a slot receiver and it'll be okay. I promise. wink

His contract is set up so that we can, if we decided we wanted to.

Teams move on from good, expensive, players all the time. If we add 2 high end WRs over the next 2 years, Landry could be in line to be moved, cut, or have his contract redone.

Here is who I would kick the tires on that are on that list:

1. Adam Humphries ATL.
2. Tyrel Williams SD

How many rookie wide receivers contribute significantly early on? Especially those drafted in the middle of the first round or later.

http://pfref.com/tiny/k2sF8

It doesn't look like many. We need to have players on offense that can contribute immediately. The clock is ticking on Baker's rookie contract, we can't afford to catch anyone up to speed. We need guys we know are good.

Thanks for the article. I really enjoy reading Burn's articles.

A request: Please don't make this another Landry thread. We already know what you guys think of Landry.

I think the only two receivers that fit what the Browns need are Funchess and Moncrief. I think the Browns need a big, physical receiver who can catch the ball in traffic and break tackles.

Both dudes have very high potential, but they have their flaws. The route running thing w/both bothers me a bit.

I'm guessing that the Browns draft that type of receiver in the draft rather than going after one of the free agents. But again, that is just a guess.

I'd say trade for AB or OBJ, but I don't really want 5 people down my throat.

Unfortunately, I feel Jarvis is pertinent to the conversation because he is a WR. Whether we could potentially replace him or compliment him should be part of the discussion. I would hope the Cleveland brass are having similar discussions.

I've felt signing a guy like Humphries isn't in our future because of Landry but the author of the article points out that we might want to consider signing Humphries and moving on from Landry a year later.

Yes, we know most fans here overrate Landry. And I'm sure the actual menZas will be on a tirade if he's released or traded, but this is all about one ultimate goal and how do we get there. We need to do what's best for the team and not do what the fans want. And I'm sure you're in complete agreement with that since you preach this everyday.

I love the premise here and I kinda agree. However rookies can contribute. Ridley, Moore, Callaway, Sutton and Kirk were all contributors. In recent years Kupp, Smith-schuster, Michael Thomas, Hill, Boyd, Cooper, Diggs, Lockett were all strong contributors. I think it's plausible we could find a rookie WR who could contribute more than a FA signing. And it's not all about this year. We still have 3 more years (at least) on his rookie deal, we will be in the super bowl within that time.

Landry is easily in that 10 to 20 range of receivers and sets the tone of practice hard, play hard, every snap counts. Don't underestimate the value of Landry on this team and especially in that wide receiver room.

Landry and Baker will be much better together in year 2.

The only free agent receiver we should be interested in is Perriman. Trading for a receiver may be our best option.

I asked first ... wink ....

U said the role Humphries slides into here is the one currently filled by VG ... Humphries is the definition of a slot reciever .... he HARDLY EVER and maybe even NEVER played in 2 wide sets ... Evans was always in and D-Jax or Chris Godwin played in he two wide sets ... Humphries prolly slide in there some after D-Jax got hurt but i would venture to guess not often ... and once the rookie Godwin started to learn the game and come along i bet Humphries hardly ever played in two wide sets ... VG on the other hand is in on ALMOST ALL 2 WIDE SETS ....

And in 3 wide sets ... i’d bet Humphries played the slot 90% of the time ... i would venture to guess that VG played way more snaps in 3 wides % wise outside than Humphries did ...

Quote:
In fact, I'm pretty sure I stated very clearly that he is in a role here as someone that is both inside and outside, which is the same role a Humphries would fill here as neither is a *pure* X or Z.

I don’t agree with that ... i watch a ton of football other than the browns .. and i watched a lot of the bucs last year because i played a ton of Humphries and Godwin in DFS ... actually picked up Godwin in one of my season long leagues also ...

With that said ... i really like Humphries and agree he is extremely talented and could play outside .. i said in another thread he would be my #1 target and he intrigues me ... i like him a heck of a lot more than Ty Williams ... its a tough comparision as there different types of recievers ....

I like Humphries .. will be happy and suprised if we sign him though .. VG and Calloway will eat up all our slot WR snaps ... Humphries does add versatility to the group ... if we use VG, Calloway and Humphries in a 3 wide sets ... they interchangeable parts ... good luck playing man against that set ..

Quote:

I’m not sure what Njoku lining up in the slot on 2 wide sets means .. hes a TE ... so we split out TE off the line instead of having him hug a tackle ... same number of WR’s regardless of where we lined Njoku up ... hes no slot reciever regardless of where he lines up ... wink ...

device

U got a link for that VG played 60% of his snaps out of the slot comment? ... not that i don’t trust u, well actually it is cause i don’t trust u ... which BTW the 60/40 split actually proves my point .. slot WR’s don’t play outside in 40% of their snaps ....

that 60% number actually seems low to me ... guess we didn’t play as many 3 wide sets as i thought ... although the injuries may have had something to do with that ...

While your at it .. why don’t u paint the ENTIRE PICTURE and let us know what % of 2 WR sets VG played in .... my guess is that one PROVES MY POINT that the guy u want to pigeon hole as a slot guy plays in almost all 2 wide sets ...

Agreed.

I am not that excited about this year's FA class. I'd rather re-sign Higgins and Perrimen. Callaway should improve (if he doesn't get in trouble), and Landry's chemistry with Baker should get better too. And let's not forget that Njoku is young, and a decent option as well. He's also good to have on the field with the improvement in his blocking this season.

So grabbing a mediocre FA WR just doesn't make much sense to me.

Now, if we can trade our 17 pick for OBJ. That'd be a different story. I'd be for that one. That guy's a game changer.

But the FA class of WRs, i'm not really digging at all. I guess we could use a tall guy like that Tyrell Williams or whatever. But even at that, i'm not sure if that's necessary with Perriman on the team.

I think i'm for giving this year's FA WR Class a hard pass, while exploring trade options to get a WR who actually improves the unit. And if there's someone in the draft, i'm down with that too

I keep reading that ... have u actually looked at his contract? .... when the haters (device, Memph and chs) say that it means little to me .... when u said it ... it gives the statement credibility in my eyes .... so i went and looked at it ...

Here’s the link ...

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/jarvis-landry-14473/

I’m no cap guy .... but the way it looks to me everything evolves around the dead cap number ... i don’t undertand that .... it makes no sense to me ... to me the important number would be the cap hit ... his cap hit is basically the same for all 5 years ... and with the escalating salaries at all positions, especially WR, he’ll be a steal in 2020 - 2022 ....

When u sign an aging vet ... i get it .. VG is still a pup and is entering the prime of his career ... he’s 26 now and will turn 27 in november ... so he will start the last year of his contract at 29 and turn 30 during the season .... he’s been to 4 pro bowls in 5 years ... more importantly hes a LEGITE BALLER and PLAYMAKER .... there’s not a lot of guys as good as him ..

I understand dead cap wise theres an out after this year ... but u also have to take into account the actual salary cap hit and how good the player is ... in THIS CASE he’ll be a relative steal for his actual cap hit in 2020 - 2022 ... its not like there’s ESCALATING SALARIES in there ..

Does it become more economically feasible as far as dead cap space goes after this year ... absolutely ... but in what world would u cut a very good player with a minimal actual salary cap hit for the position he plays that’s in the prime of his career? ...

That don’t make sense to me dawg ... not at all ...

U said that teams move on from good, expensive players all the time ..... i’d like to know who those good, expensive players are that are released please ....

I don't know the history on any differing opinions on Landry.... Myself I am a fan and I think he offers more than the sum of his stats.

But to me the #1 thing that keeps him a Brown or has him move on after 2019 is his chemistry with Baker. Baker had a chemistry with Higgins last year and that seemed due to the time they spent together before Tyrod was injured because the genius that was Hue gave Baker zero reps with the first team .... let's see what an off-season and a preseason to prepare and develop chemistry will do for Baker and all the WR's and most especially Landry.

The dead cap number is what it would cost to move on from a player. After the 2019 season, we could cut Landry with only a $4.5 million cap hit, whereas it would cost us $14.5 million to keep him on the roster.

I don't expect that contract to cause major problems at that point .... but it is a possible "escape" point, if we find receivers who wind up being more valuable to the team, especially at a lower cost.

Humphries is 79% in the slot since you asked. Actually 78.4 and Landry was technically 59.3.

Landry and Humphries are good comparisons. Between the two, if you're going to get one at half the cost of the other regardless of who is who, then I say it's a no brainer. Take the cheaper version. They both supplied their teams with about the same production.

And sure I can supply a link. I have nothing to hide or keep secret. I don't make up stuff like you and your cronies like to tell others. Just makes you guys look foolish. This stuff is also readily available on the internet. Google is a wonderful tool. Assuming the people who run these sites are actually reporting the information accurately....

I don't think it's been thrown off course, yet...

This thread is about Free agent WR Options. One of the options mentioned in the article upon which this thread is based is that of signing Humphries and releasing Landry after this upcoming season.

I'm sorry this thread isn't about what you'd like to discuss. Perhaps find the appropriate thread or start a new one, but please refrain from attempting to derail this one. Thanks.

He's not a FA receiver - but you don't look at FA players in a vacuum. You look at them in relation to the talent and fit you have on your roster and the contracts they are on.

Also, since Landry was already up for discussion and whether he's going to be a long term solution or not I figured it was reasonable to discuss him. . . . the idea that any thread stays exactly on one topic without any deviation and tangents is unrealistic.

Replacing Landry with Humphries is foolish. I understand the money part, but that is a non issue with me. Landry is a good player and a leader of the team. He sets a good example of how to prepare, and has a good relationship with the QB. Trading him because a guy like Humphries has similar stats is ridiculous, team chemistry is a value overlooked by these arm chair GMs that talk about his salary and the value he adds to the roster.

j/c...I seriously doubt we will be active in the WR FA market.

Just for the record...ANY and EVERY WR/TE/RB is best at the Slot for the simple reason that is whee the 3rd best CB will be.

This sounds dumb as I type it, but is this a priority area for PS this season? I think I would prefer the known 'pedigree' and whatever success in a FA, but not at crazy price tags unless the worth is proven and we can make numbers work. With Dorsey's ability to sift value in later rounds, I am thinking we would want a few more extra for TC and the PS. I would hate to limit BM by not having some talented size and speed.
