Joseph is okay. I would have preferred keeping Murray, but this is a decent signing. Not much of a play-maker and he is coming off of a late-season injury, but he'll probably start here.

I've been wanting Joseph on here before the season even ended. His coverage has come a long way, and hes still only 26. Only a one year deal, as obviously his Achilles heel is injuries...you must have insurance behind him, as it's hard to count on him for a 16 game season. But we got a starting SS finally!
Here is an analysis after the 2018 season. I'll try to find one from the 2019 season. He was highly regarded coming out of college. Had some injuries. Hasn't made too many plays in terms of picks and the such. He will definitely hit you.

Oakland Raiders 2018 season grades: S Karl Joseph
Pete Hernandez III
Despite an inconsistent start to the first half of the 2018 season, Karl Joseph made strides in the second half as a future piece for the Oakland Raiders.
Coming into the 2018 season with new head coach Jon Gruden back at the helm for his second stint, all eyes were on the cornerstones of the Oakland Raiders to see how much of a impact they'd make and the speed at which their play developed under a new coach, new staff, and new system. Among the players that fit the bill, 2016 first round pick Karl Joseph was among those expected to take a leap in 2018.
Instead, the Raiders got off to a rough start to the season and Joseph's play and number of snaps diminished as the weeks continued on. At one point in the former part of the season, Joseph effectively saw no snaps and was one of many names on the radar come the trade deadline, waiting to see if he'd don a uniform other than Silver and Black to finish the season.
Joseph ended up staying put in Oakland, resulting in much more snaps and playing time in the latter half of the season, and its safe to say that he answered any doubts as to whether or not he warrants a spot in the future plans of the Raiders. In a season full of ups and downs, Joseph was among the few bright spots as Oakland closed out 2018.
Here's a look at his season in review, as well as how he graded out for the 2018 season. Expectations
After some solid play in his first two seasons in the NFL, year three was expected to be one in which he took another leap in his development and solidified his hold on the strong safety position for the defense. With Paul Guenther being brought on board as defensive coordinator, there was hope that the defensive schemes that would be employed would help Joseph cement himself as a key focal point of a defense that was meant to improve compared to years past. Reality
Karl Joseph did eventually make strides to showcase exactly why the Raiders selected him in the first round in 2016, though it effectively took a little later than most fans expected. After sparingly getting snaps and playing time as the first half of the season rolled on, Joseph survived being dealt at the trade deadline and proved that the starting snaps he got in the second half of 2018 was warranted.
By the end of 2018, Joseph recorded 34 solo tackles, an interception, and two pass deflections. Perhaps most highlight-worthy were the multiple hard hits he laid on opposing backs and receivers to close out the season. Joseph still needs to work on his reads and coverages, but his hard hitting highlight hits were a great compliment the improved play of the secondary and the likes of Gareon Conley. Looking Ahead
Joseph is already on the books next season, and he was one of the few that showed strong improvement in the second half of the season that helped turn around the play of the defense. For a good amount of games in the latter half of the season, it was the Raiders defense that held up its own end of the bargain (see Week 14 against the Steelers) to keep Oakland in the game. Joseph was among those responsible for the turnaround. Next: Davis denies he is meeting with Coliseum board
He'll be among those to keep an eye out in year two of Guenther's defensive system and the hope is that he'll continue to improve his reads and coverages alongside with the hard hits that have become his staple. If the Raiders can add in a solid compliment at free safety, whether through the draft or free agency, then Joseph has a great chance to make a leap in 2019 and be a cornerstone of the defense.

I really like this signing. Looks like he sealed two games for them last year and all the Raiders fans I have seen comment have been a little bummed that he is gone.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
Did I read that he was injured last year? Seems like a better run S than pass

Yes, he ended the year on IR. I think it was around game 11. Injuries have been a thing for him since college. Tore his ACL in last season at WVU.
And yeah, he is an in-the-box safety. I'm not a huge fan of those types of players and I was one guy who never liked TJ Ward. But, I get this signing. It was decent.

You said he’s a hitter, but, is he also a good tackler? I remember that was one of the things about Ward that bugged me, he’d go for a hit, and not a tackle.
As long as we can get more of a FS type it makes sense. Good call thanks

He's pretty much a carbon copy of Ward. Relentless, hard hitter. Better run defender than pass defender, but will make a play here or there in coverage. My biggest fear is penalties tho. He has a knack for leaning in with the helmet first. Again, carbon copy of TJ.

IMO, Joseph is a better tackler. He does know how to wrap up.
It looked like things were starting to click for him before the injury bug bit again. Hopefully, he can stay healthy. Only a one year deal, so it's a bit of a lottery ticket. At least, we don't have to reach in the draft to fill a gaping hole now, assuming he passes his physical.
You mess with the "Bull," you get the horns. Fiercely Independent.

I'm not really sure. I didn't watch a ton of Raider games. I know TJ Ward was a big hitter, but a poor tackler...especially in space. I know that he Joseph has been compared to TJ, but I don't want to label him a bad tackler because I really don't know.
Hopefully, he is both a hard hitter and a good tackler. I would not expect a whole lot in pass defense, though.
I think this team desperately needs a LBer who can defend the pass, especially w/the Joseph signing. The Joe Scho thing makes no sense to me. And I blame both Dorsey and Berry. No agenda. I think they both messed up.

I would have liked to keep Scho as well, but, what can you do?
Thanks for or the intel on Joseph ... didn’t realize penalties were an issue, but being a hard hitter makes sense. I do like having someone on the backend to lay the wood tho

I see moves like this akin to rearranging the deck chairs.
same here, Olivier Vernon II, the guy is damaged goods hoping everyday his knee holds up,his better days are gone, he might make it thru pre season or the first home game.
Yeah I watched several games last year of the Raiders, just to see how Gruden had them playing. Announcers were always glowing when talking of Karl Joseph's play and his growth in coverage...they gave big money to Joyner and drafted Abram in round 1 last year...writing was on the wall for Joseph...Glad we got him as well. However I hope we grab some insurance behind him. Another safety I like who will be reasonable is Adrian Phillips whom has started at nickel,FS, and SS...and actually worked at LB (so I've read) as an undrafted rookie...also has a pro bowl for his play on defense and special teams. Would be an ideal signing imo
My guess, since it's only one yeardeal, they're probably hoping to find a much better Safety next FA/draft period. He seems inconsistent, at best, in coverage, going by stats, but seems very solid in run defense. An alright signing until something better comes along.
