The Browns have pick #26 overall.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

6 defensive players, and 5 of 6 players in rounds 1-4.
There will be no playoffs. Can’t play with who we have out there and compounding it with garbage playcalling and worse execution. We don’t have good skill players on offense period. Browns 20 - Bears 17.

Any pick after 111, Historically doesn't amount to, well the drop off in the reliablility to find in any way a productive player who will hang around and benefit your team, is so steep, that even though a handful can be found, there is almost no reason to put any merit in relying on players picked there, to be any good.
edit: because 112 is the old limit to the first 4 rounds when the league had 28 teams, and that's the drop off point.

Tom Brady, Bo Jackson, Deacon Jones, Mike Webster, Bart Starr, Terrell Davis, Matt Birk, Brian Sipe, Adalius Thomas, Joe Horn, Robert Mathis, Ryan Fitzpatrick ... all picked 5th round or lower. Its not typically the case, but it does happen that lower round picks make big contributions.

I would venture to guess it is a pretty high percentage that had no impact. Sure you will find a diamond in the rough in the late rounds but the odds are stacked against you. Found an article but it is 5 years old. https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2015/2/20...-draft-by-round

I think this year might be a year we look to trade down and move up or gain picks next year.
I could see us dropping out of the 1st round this year to the top part of round 2 for maybe a 3rd rounder next year, then package our 2nd rounder(#59) and some combination of our 3nd and or 4th round picks to get to move up from #50 to higher in the 2nd round.
Basically we would end up with 2 high 2nd rounders this year and a extra 3rd next year. This year we would also be out one pick in either/or the 3rd and 4th rounds.
My feeling is we are entering the point where quantity of players drafted isn't as important as getting the right players, even if fewer.

Without a lot of time to scout and evaluate players in person, I could see us trading back and acquiring more draft capital ... more throws at the dart board in an unknown year
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

There was a time the draft was 30 rounds. Of course that was when you had half the teams you have now but even in the 60's and into the 70's it was 17-20 rounds.

If we can find someone in those rounds to get the same production as DPJ did last year (hopefully on defense), I will be thrilled.

Of Course this won't be popular, but people need to learn. Given the State of the 2020 Browns, the idea of drafting only players who play defense for 5 of the first 6 pics is one of the top 5 worst things the team could likely do to destroy continuation of the success they had this year.
Straight nosedive.

1. I completely disagree. The vast majority of the offense is locked up well beyond 2021; we can afford to completely shift focus to one side of the ball for one offseason.
2. What we draft, and how people see our Needs for the Draft, will be dramatically impacted by what we do in Free Agency. Once most of our larger holes are plugged in Free Agency, you will see a lot of people shift their view to a more balanced approach to the Draft. Heck, I may even be on the bandwagon of drafting a WR at that stage.

That being what it is, we will likely only be able to patch holes in Free Agency. We need to begin building talented depth across the board in The Draft.... but, there is a very real probability that the top of The Draft will be focused on selecting immediate starters to replace/supplant people we sign as free agents in March.

Found an article but it is 5 years old. https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2015/2/20...-draft-by-round I always felt the drafts during the 1930s-1960s the odds were more likely hitting on a late round gem because some teams were slower to come around to sophisticated scouting. When the draft first started it was not uncommon for teams to use a Street and Smith magazine to select players.

The compensatory picks have not been figured in yet. 4th round numbers and lower, will drop.

And there you have it. Free agency is where you address needs. Nobody goes in to free agency out to select the best players available.
In any draft you have players grouped together. In other words, they more or less are equal in ability. In that case, you obviously select a player at a position of need. If there is a player who really stand alone in that slot, you best pick them, so that is why I say we shouldn't go in to the draft with the mind set of D only. It's funny how being set at a position today can change tomorrow.
That said, we will probably select a high percentage of defensive players.
As you said, I see a need at WR. I can see where better depth and eventual starters are needed along the O-line.
Losing teams are the teams that allow needs to punch them in the mouth.

Ok so it 5 picks in the top 111. Thanks for the correction and for the record there is a lot of talent in that top 125 of the draft.

There is a good deal of talent, but not all that much on the defensive side of the ball.
I wouldn't count on much along the Dline or backer.
It's a good year for interior O-linemen and wide receivers...QB's as well. It's wouldn't be a bad idea to pluck at least 1 of each at the WR and Oline positions.
