Will we have a better performance? Chicago’s OL sucks, but I’m worried about our own defense and the fact that Fields will be running all over the place.

We need to start to play to our potential on the defensive end

I am resigned to Fields killing us with his legs. We just have to make him make mistakes when he throws.

could be interesting... we should have a good defensive game... Fields will have a couple big runs I feel but don't think he's ready to throw it much on us.

Their o line cant be that bad. I believe they are 8th in the nfl in running the ball. What worries me is they are top 10 in stopping the run. With landry out we need our running game more than ever

So are we.
Actually, in YPC, we're Top 5. We only drop to 9th based on number of attempts.

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

That’s my thought as well

I,m going to scream if Woods plays our CB's too soft again.
Greg Williams preferred Denzel Ward in that draft class because of his press cover ability. I realize the prevent defense is needed in certain situations but playing 9-10 yards off the reciever when they need 7 for a first down makes no sense to me.
YAC will get them a first down everytime.

Speaking of our CBS, has anyone seen Greedy?

Cornerback
Pos Player Plays % Stats
CB Greg Newsome 60 98% 1 tackle, 2 assists (3 combined). 1 pass defended.
CB Denzel Ward 60 98% 4 tackles (4 combined).
CB Troy Hill 37 61% 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 TFL.
Denzel Ward (45.4) and Troy Hill (48.3) both graded poorly at cornerback by PFF. It’s rough to see a lot of highly-drafted talent or highly-signed free agents performing at an underwhelming level to begin the year.
PFF says that Ward was targeted 7 times, allowing 6 catches for 99 yards. Hill was targeted 4 times, allowing 3 catches for 44 yards.
Rookie Greg Newsome was targeted twice, allowing 1 catch for 2 yards.
Greedy Williams only played on special teams.

The Browns are wasting two first draft picks with Ward and Newsome attempting to play the Woods prevent defense that relies on the DLine and LBs to sac the QB before he throws the pass to his open wideouts.

The Browns don't need first round CBs to play the role that the Woods defensive scheme calls for...such a waste of talent, using them to play a prevent defense like the first two games.

The Browns and Woods don't call the defense a prevent, but at best our cornerbacks are to play a loose zone defense, with a free release off the LOS and keeping the WR in front of them with the theory that the Browns DLine and LBs will get to the QB before he can complete the pass to the open receivers.

...I call that a prevent defense!

Ward and Newsome can forget any Pro Bowl honors or ever being considered among the best cover corners in the NFL playing Woods "scheme" defense...SUCH A WASTE OF TALENT.

Yup, just like i said in another thread, its nothing more than a glorified prevent defense. Last season only one defensive coordinator called less blitzes than woods. Pointless. I just dont understand why we dont play more man coverage and get after the qb.

Newsome seems pretty wise, especially for a rookie.

Good point … why draft a CB when you basically could use Robert Jackson as a prevent-type defender anwyays

I know it's still early for the defense; I know we'll look better as the year goes on, but I still question Wood's defense schematically.

It looks to me like we play a soft cover-3 zone most of the time. I understood this last year, but it seems like we should have the talent to man-up and play some more aggressive cover-1 schemes this year.

We can get pressure rushing 4 DL, but when you give up the quick underneath routes playing a soft cover-3, what's the point?

Our 3rd down defense has been horrible.I don't see the point of always having your MLB on the field at all times...give the green dot to JJ3, and get Walker (or M. Smith now) off the field on 3rd down passing situations. I'd love to see a 3rd down defense of 3 CBs, 3 Safties, and JOK in passing situations. Gives you the option to play cover-1 against a variety of formations, and JOK can be used in a variety of ways (spy, roamer, blitzer). JJ3 should be good as the single-high free safety. Man coverage would give our pass rush more time to get home. We don't even need to blitz more (we were actually really bad when blitzing last year), but this line-up would give us the ability to blitz from multiple spots as well.

And don't get me started on how our DEs pass rush against mobile QBs again.

I just see too much bland cover-3 from Woods, and it needs to change, now that we have more talent.

It also made sense vs the beast that is KC's offense. For me, their play vs Houston was what really gave me pause.

-trouble covering a pretty pedestrian group of WRs
-allowed a rookie 3rd-round QB to look pretty comfortable
-Tyrod Taylor was carving them up

They did do a stellar job vs the run, though.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
