I'd say that's a personal topic that shouldn't be shared with an internet rando. How do we know you're not a Nigerian Prince waiting to set us up for a con? smh

I think there's a difference in talking about finances and personal information. But that's just me. To each their own.

Nothing is off the table. But disclosing your net worth online is idiocy. Unless you're broke AF, you are putting a target on your back. Sorry you can't see that.

A lot of people do live paycheck to paycheck, but this doesn't mean they don't have equity in a home, valuable possessions, retirement savings of some sort, etc. Living paycheck to paycheck means without that paycheck every week (pay period) they are hurt because they don't have liquid assets to cover their expenses. I mean who wants to borrow against their equity to pay utility bills on time? At least that's the way I see it, and that certainly explains that number.

I agree. Nearly everybody has a net worth of something positive. I had this discussion with a member in a PM the other day.

It may not be all that much, but when the topic come up people, or at least a good many equate that with billionaires.

A good thing for people to remember. Hard times can hit anyone. People tend to spend according to what they make. You live in the best house you can buy, You buy the best car you can buy. So just because someone drives a new Lexus v driving a used Focus doesn't mean they don't need their paycheck any less.

It's just human nature. Add in gluttony, which is human nature, since they have more, they might even need their paycheck more. You just never know.

Everybody has experienced it....you go in to a bar with $10 in your pocket, you drink a little slower than if you have $50 in your pocket.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

This is a fantastic example. I can tell you that I'm much more cognizant of this as I'm getting older (and more mature... allegedly). It really comes down to simple/stupid budgeting (leaving the extra $30-40 at home and going to the bar with only $10-20).

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Yeah, but you're still a pup. Don't worry, the circle continues. In 15 years you'll be like "man, I don't get out much"... then you'll take 60-100 (inflation) to the bar, and stash cash before the grocery store!

My dad said something to me when I was a child that really didn't quite sink in at the time. But as life progresses you often times find out that the things you were told make more sense once they become more applicable to your life. As a child you will say to your parents, "Can I have *insert what it is you want here*. It's only $20".

To which my dad told me. "You say only $20. Now to you I guess $20 doesn't sound like much. If you have a lot of money, $20 doesn't sound like much. And it isn't much to you. But if you have nothing $20 is a lot of money."

So what is or isn't a lot of money often times boils down to just how much money you have.

Just to laugh (or cry) a bit since inflation is a big topic right now. During my last few years of HS and first couple of years in college when I went to BW in Berea, I was more or less the night manager at the gas station I worked at since I was even younger. After closing up if it was a light homework night, I would hit this little bar pretty much across the street.

I never had much money in my pocket back then, but didn't really need much at this joint. You could buy a 16oz fishbowl mug of Blatz draft for 25 cents a bowl.

Blatz draft in a fishbowl... that's what my step-dad drank when we would pop in a pub after an unsuccessful day of fishing.

There was a club in Dayton called the She Nightclub in the 70's. It was a disco club which I thought sucked. lol But on Sunday nights they had what they called drink and drown night. Sure it was 3.2% draft beer. But it was all the draft you could drink for $2.00. At 18 years old it was a deal my friends and I couldn't refuse.

I can say that I have more expendable income than I ever have in my life, but I also am more budget conscious more than any time in my life.

I’m pretty much in the same boat.
I want for little. I save a lot. I choose experiences (travel, etc) over objects (newest phone, tv, car, etc). I live frugally but don’t go without.

I know you are not that old. I think I can remember 50 cents drafts in the early 80s. Of course, that was for the cheaper beers and you had to buy a small pitcher. For a single pull, it was 75 cents iirc.

I remember (barely) Metal Night at Filthy McNasty's in Kent, circa mid-eighties.

25¢ Draft/Mug Night. If you didn't bring your own mug, they served it up in 12oz cups.

People used to bust my balls for not taking advantage by bringing my own mug. I told them I'm not trying to save two dollars by drinking warm bear all night. Talk about mass-inebriation.

At the same bar I mentioned, a pack of smokes from the vending machine was .34 cents. You put in your quarter and dime. A penny was taped to the back of the pack..you got matches as well!

Those prices stayed close to the same, I remember paying 35 cents a pack in the early 70s. Kids could buy cigarettes then, "for your parents". 35 cents was a day's school lunch money. My friends and I took turns buying them and would sneak off and share the pack. A pack would last us all week between 4-5 of us.

Yeah, seems like those prices remained close to the same for a few decades. Seems like it was the mid 70's before all sorts of taxes were applied in an effort to get people to quit. It's been a while, but the price of gas we sold at the time was about 35cents a gallon. I had to change the prices at the pumps now and again, but I just don't remember exactly.

I have slept a few times since then. I do remember I could pretty much fill up the beast of a Pontiac station wagon I drove around for a little over $5. I didn't usually do that. I'd put in $3. That would get me around for 3-4 days to get out to Berea for class.

I think gas prices were around $0.32 to $0.35 a gallon for quite awhile. There was some talk about OPEC raising prices, but I think the biggest problem was distribution. Remember the long lines starting in 1974 or 1975? I remember because I was a senior in HS in 1975 and it was an issue for a fairly new driver. I think prices soared to being over $0.50 a gallon in a very short time.

one of the things that always confuses me is how net worth is calculated in this country. you would think there's just one way, but different people will use a different standard.

for example. let's say you have a home valued at 500k, and you have 250k left on your mortgage. some people will say that you can only include 250k into the net worth, but others will state that they don't consider mortgages as actual debt, so just throw the full 500k in there.

so if you have two paid off rides valued at 60k total, 500k home, and 10k in credit card debt, your net worth could be 550k, or only 300k.

just wondering how you guys view net worth personally. does the mortgage count as debt or no? i know the auto loans and credit card/personal loan debt obviously count, but home value and mortgage seems to be the biggest disagreement overall.

I've never heard of including mortgage debt as an asset when calculating net worth... that's essentially what you're doing when including the full value of a home while neglecting to deduct the debt.

I don't know anyone that would ignore a mortgage when calculating their net worth. It's actually dumb, really. Net worth: What you are worth. If your house is valued at 500k, but you owe 250k, you can't just ignore the debt.

Net worth: Assets minus liabilities (debt)

yea guys i was just asking what the standard was. people would quote their net worth, but with houses would just state the value instead of the debt. im not talking on any legal paperwork, but people just stating their value in general conversation. it's like people stating their income but not the actual post-taxed paycheck.

Well depending on who you are, who you are reporting it to and the claims you are making it can vary widely. I mean if you are telling someone you are trying to get a loan from a property is worth 8 million while telling the tax man it's only 3 million, that a difference of 5 million. I mean that's a crime when most people do that but not so much for others.

It's assets minus debut. I wouldn't even count things like cars unless they are collector cars. Same with things such as jewerly and art work unless they are valuable, appraised, and insured.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Assets minus liabilities... you have to include the mortgage... I don't recommend paying off a mortgage quickly if you have a good rate but you'd take the $500k minus $250k because you are only counting your equity...

I've seen others do what you said where they include the full $500k.... but I would say you have $500k in assets... not net worth...

I mean that's a crime when most people do that but not so much for others.

not a crime unless you are being fraudulent... if I'm buying a house using a loan I need to have a licensed appraiser assess the current market value to secure the loan... if I'm paying someone off to give me a higher value then yes, that's a crime...

for property taxes, the tax assessors are determining that value... I can try to appeal and fight it and may or may not do a good job of that...

for federal taxes you don't pay anything until you sell... and then you may or may not own capital gains depending on a number of things...

I agree that there are some that commit real estate crime, but there are very legit reasons why the prices would be off... maybe not $5mm off smile

I'm the same... never count my cars or things in the house except some gold coins....
