Ships hit in Strait of Hormuz as gas prices increase once again

Iran has intensfied attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, as the US has also said it struck an Iranian weapons manufacturing facility last night.

Two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz were attacked by Iran today, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement, according to Iran’s state-affliated Fars News Agency.

Three crew members of a Thai vessel struck by an unknown projectile remain unaccounted for, Thailand’s Ministry of Transport said.

The US struck a “large ballistic missile manufacturing facility” in Iran last night, the commander of US Central Command said.

The son of the Iranian president has said the country’s new supreme leader “is safe” as questions swirl over his public absence.

Russia is helping Iran with advanced drone tactics to hit US and Gulf nation targets in the Middle East, a Western intelligence official told CNN.

Gas prices in the US have risen to highest average price in more than 21 months.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the war with Iran will end “soon,” claiming there’s little left to target and reiterating that the decision to end the conflict will be his call.

“Little this and that… Any time I want it to end, it will end,” he told Axios in a brief phone interview.

“The war is going great. We are way ahead of the timetable. We have done more damage than we thought possible, even in the original six-week period,” Trump said.

Hegseth says Trump, amid mixed messages on timeline and nation building, will decide when Iran war is over

Hegseth said the U.S. will end its conflict with Iran "at our choosing."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday said the U.S. will end its war with Iran "on our timeline" and "at our choosing" amid mixed messaging from the administration on the timing of the operation and its ultimate objective.

Hegseth notably declined to give a further assessment on how much longer the military campaign will last, saying Tuesday would be the most intense day of strikes yet in the 11-day conflict and that it will be up to President Donald Trump to decide when the war is over.

"The president has set a very specific mission to accomplish, and our job is to unrelentingly deliver that," Hegseth told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing.

"Now he gets to control the throttle. He's the one deciding. He's the one elected on behalf of the American people when we're achieving those objectives. And so, it's not for me to posit whether it's the beginning, the middle or the end. That's his. And he'll continue to communicate that," the defense secretary said.

Trump himself has made conflicting statements on the matter.

Trump told CBS News on Monday afternoon that the war is "very complete, pretty much." But around that time, the Defense Department's rapid response social media account posted on X: "We have Only Just Begun to Fight."

ABC News White House Correspondent Selina [censored] pressed Trump later Monday evening at a news conference: "So, which is it and how long should Americans be preparing for this war to last for?"

"Well, I think you can say both. The beginning -- it's the beginning of building a new country, but they certainly, they have no navy, they have no air force, they have no anti-aircraft equipment," Trump said.

"We could call it a tremendous success right now. As we leave here, I could call it. Or we could go further and we're going to go further," the president added.

Trump said on Monday he thinks the war will be over "very soon" and repeatedly called the war a "short-term excursion."

Trump and his top officials have outlined four objectives of the military offensive: destroy Iran's ballistic missile capabilities; annihilate their Navy; ensure they can never obtain a nuclear weapon; and prevent the Iranian regime from arming and funding terrorism outside its borders. But broader goals on what comes after the fighting ends remains unclear.

Trump's signaled he could declare the military campaign a success at any time, even as the Iranian regime remains in power and Iran still maintains its enriched uranium stockpile. Trump's repeatedly said Iran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon -- and over the weekend said he was not ruling out the possible use of U.S. ground troops in Iran, but said that they would be used only "for a very good reason."

The president has also sent mixed messages on regime change, and how involved the U.S. intends to be in what new leadership will take control in Tehran.

Trump expressed disappointment in the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli strike at the beginning of the war.

In a phone interview with ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Mary Bruce on Sunday, Trump said the new leader is "going to have to get approval from us."

"If he doesn’t get approval from us he’s not going to last long. We want to make sure that we don’t have to go back every 10 years, when you don’t have a president like me that’s not going to do it," Trump told ABC.

Hegseth, though, on Tuesday vowed the U.S. would not be involved in "mission creep."

"This is not endless. It's not protracted," Hegseth said.

"This is not 2003. This is not endless nation-building … Those days are dead. Instead, we're winning decisively with brutal efficiency, total air dominance, and an unbreakable will to accomplish the president's objectives," Hegseth said.

Joe Rogan says many Trump supporters feel 'betrayed' by Iran war

The influential podcaster, who endorsed Trump in the 2024 election, said that the decision to strike Iran "seems so insane based on what he ran on."

Influential podcaster Joe Rogan this week questioned President Donald Trump's decision to strike Iran, saying that some supporters of the president feel "betrayed" by the war.

Speaking about Iran with conservative author and writer Michael Shellenberger in a podcast episode released Tuesday, Rogan said that the military operation "seems so insane based on what he ran on."

"I mean, this is why a lot of people feel betrayed, right? He ran on 'no more wars', 'end these stupid, senseless wars', and then we have one that we can’t even really clearly define why we did it," the podcaster, who hosted Trump on his program two years ago and endorsed him on the eve of the 2024 election, added.

Shellenberger responded to Rogan, saying that, on the campaign trail, Trump "said he’s against endless wars."

"They're all endless," Rogan responded, pointing to comments former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld made in 2003, at the start of the Iraq War.

"It could last, you know, six days, six weeks. I doubt six months," Rumsfeld said at the time about the war, which lasted nearly nine years.

Earlier in the podcast episode, Rogan also called the U.S. military action in Iran, "nuts," while comparing it to an operation in Venezuela earlier this year where U.S. troops captured then-President Nicolas Maduro and brought him to New York to face criminal charges.

"That one was, at least, clean. They go in, kidnap him, get him out. This one’s nuts," Rogan, whose podcast has almost 21 million subscribers on YouTube, said.

He and Shellenberger went on to discuss the president's possible motivations for striking Iran, with Rogan questioning whether Trump was influenced by Israel or "war hawks around him."

Later in the podcast episode, Rogan pointed to the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, telling Shellenberger, "to add [Iran] to the pile, it genuinely feels like there’s a real possibility that we might be entering World War III."

In response to an NBC News request for comment on Rogan's remarks, a White House spokesperson defended the president, saying that the decision to strike Iran is "as America first as it gets."

“President Trump is courageously protecting the United States from the deadly threat posed by the rogue Iranian regime — and that is as America First as it gets. The entire administration is working together to end Iran’s ability to possess a nuclear weapon, use or develop ballistic missiles, arm proxies, or use its now-defeated navy," White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said.

"The President has called attention to the Iranian regime’s threat prior to ever holding office, and his predecessors have talked about doing something for 47 years. Thankfully, President Trump had the courage to finally do something about it, and Iran is being completely crushed under the weight of the United States Military," Kelly added.

Rogan and other "manosphere" podcasters like Andrew Schulz, Theo Von and the Paul brothers, were credited last year for helping Trump make gains among young men in the 2024 presidential election after they hosted him on their podcasts, which regularly generate viral moments and garner millions of views.

In his election night victory speech in 2024, Trump even thanked some of these podcasters, mentioning them by name.

But Rogan's criticism of the president this week isn't the first time in Trump's second term that the podcasters who helped him in 2024 have spoken out about his policies. In recent months, Rogan, Von, Shawn Ryan and others publicly spoke out against the president's mass deportation agenda, his administration's support for Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the administration's handling of Jeffrey Epstein records and Trump's attacks on comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

During a January episode of his podcast, Rogan said he could "see the point of view of the people" who question ICE tactics, adding, "Are we really going to be the Gestapo? 'Where’s your papers?’ Is that what we’ve come to?”

Trump responded to Rogan's comments during an interview with NBC News' Tom Llamas last month. Calling Rogan a "great guy," Trump said he spoke with the podcaster about his criticisms.

“I think he’s a great guy, and I think he likes me, too,” Trump said, adding, “And, you know, liking me isn’t important. What happens is that — I think we do a phenomenal job, but I don’t think we’re good at public relations."

Young men's support of Trump across the country started to wane in public polling and focus groups last year, a trend that has continued this year. A February Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 33% of men aged 18-29 approved of Trump’s performance in the White House, compared to 43% of the same group who said the same in 2025.

A majority of registered voters in the U.S. disapprove of how the president is handling the situation in Iran, an NBC News poll released last week found. Some of the president's most vocal supporters, like former Fox News host Megyn Kelly and conservative activist Jack Posobiec, have questioned how the Iran offensive lines up with Trump's "America First" agenda.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran earlier this month, seven U.S. service members have died and Iran has responded by launching strikes against Israel, nearby U.S. bases and other targets in Middle East countries.

The president in recent days has wavered when speaking about how long the war could last.

Last week, he suggested it could take a month or longer, but added that the military was prepared to continue the operation, “as long as necessary.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that the war would end "when the commander in chief determines the military objectives have been met fully realized, and that Iran is in a position of complete and unconditional surrender, whether they say it or not."

On Wednesday, Trump predicted that the war in Iran would end "soon," and that there is "practically nothing left to target," in an interview with Axios.

Three cargo ships struck off Iran’s coast, UK says, including one in Strait of Hormuz

Three vessels off Iran’s coast have been struck by projectiles, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said on Wednesday, the latest in a flurry of incidents reported in or near the Strait of Hormuz.

One of the ships reported it had been struck 11 nautical miles north of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire onboard and forcing the crew to evacuate, the UKMTO said, without identifying the vessels.

Two other incidents were also reported on Wednesday morning, with one vessel struck by a projectile about 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and another sustaining damage off the coast of the UAE.

The UKMTO urged vessels in the area to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity while authorities continue to investigate.

Thailand’s navy said a Thailand-flagged container ship with 23 people onboard had been attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters. Photos showed black smoke billowing from the Mayuree Naree vessel.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards later said they had fired on the vessel in the waterway, Reuters reported, citing the semiofficial Tasnim news agency.

Shipping traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz has ground to a near standstill since the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28. Iran has retaliated by targeting ships trying to pass through the Strait, with several incidents reported in recent days.

The waterway is a narrow maritime corridor that connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Roughly 20% of global oil and gas typically passes through it.

U.S. forces sank several Iranian ships on Tuesday, including 16 minelayers, near the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command.

The update followed an earlier announcement from U.S. President Donald Trump that said if Iran had put any mines in the waterway, “we want them removed, IMMEDIATELY!”

The UKMTO said it had received 17 reports of incidents affecting vessels operating in and around the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman between Feb. 28, when the war began, and March 11. These include 13 attack reports and four reports of suspicious activity.

“Iran’s rapid and extensive retaliation against shipping and regional energy, port and economic infrastructure has severed a vital artery in global supply chains, as the flow of oil, refined products, LNG and chemicals grinds to a near halt,” Torbjorn Soltvedt, principal Middle East analyst at risk intelligence company Verisk Maplecroft, said Wednesday in a note.

“Additional attacks against ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz overnight underscore that Iran still presents a very real threat to shipping,” he added.
