GM says Dolphins all ears when it comes to No. 1 draft pick
ESPN.com news services

MOBILE, Ala. -- Let the bidding for the No. 1 pick begin.

"We're open for business," new Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland, on hand to watch practices for the Senior Bowl, told the NFL Network on Wednesday.

Ireland, whose quote appeared in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, has been working at a breakneck pace since Bill Parcells hired him away from the Cowboys three weeks ago.

In the time after Ireland became GM, the Dolphins fired Cam Cameron and most of his staff, hired Tony Sparano as coach and started to assemble a staff of assistant coaches.

"Have I been able to breathe yet? Uh, a little bit," Ireland said Wednesday after watching a Senior Bowl workout. "I'm just glad to be watching some football players."

Then there's the matter of whether the Dolphins plan to keep the top selection in April's draft or trade it. Based on its just-completed 1-15 season, Miami has a plethora of needs.

"Rome wasn't built in a day, and this won't be built in a day either," Ireland said, according to the Sun-Sentinel. "The No. 1 pick is no different from the 22nd pick. You've got to make the right selection. You just can't miss on it.

"We're going to do everything in our power to make the right choices, whether it be to take the pick or move down. We'll listen to all offers."

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN.com's NFL draft expert, is not alone in forecasting LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey as the top pick to the Dolphins. Ireland declined to discuss specific players or positions of special interest to the Dolphins, but he said he and Parcells, who last month became executive vice president of football operations, have reviewed their observations from the Senior Bowl workouts about 30 minutes each day. Parcells watched the workouts on cable TV.

Sparano also didn't make the trip to Mobile, instead remaining in South Florida to focus on hiring a coaching staff. Ireland said he's comfortable with the way he'll divide responsibility with Sparano and Parcells.

"The situation that we're in is that Bill does oversee everything," Ireland said. "But yet I am the GM and we have a head coach, so there is going to be a triangle of communication involved here.

"I can't say that Bill will have the final say on everything, because we communicate so well. That's why Tony's in the position that he's in and that's why Bill brought me here [to Mobile] -- because we'll communicate and make decisions together."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I DO NOT DISLIKE Brady Quinn,...repeat, DO NOT.

But with the new news today that the Browns are swinging a 3-year in front of Anderson, does this Dolphins news not scream trading Quinn ??

I really hate the thought.

I would be shocked if EITHER QB was traded for the first overall pick. NEITHER are worth it.

So it's a coincidence that he picked Brady Quinn's exact draft spot for his analogy?

This draft reminds me of the draft where we got Edwards. Really weak at the top, but pretty deep and a lot of value guys once you got past the top 10 to 12 picks.

Anderson or Quinn for the # 1. Nice day dream but we already dreamed about this in another thread. Cold water reality says that Quinn won't be traded as he is the future of the franchise and if Anderson gets only a 1 year, (probably more likely 3 at least) it will be First, maybe 1st and 3rd round tender to make sure no one jumps up and takes him.

I don't see anyone who would/will pay the price in terms of picks or in terms of money to jump up and take the # 1 off Miami's hands. As I recall Parcells did pretty well with the # 1 overall pick he had in New England (Drew Bledsoe) so really IMO, this is just smoke and mirrors.

When I read the title I wondered, "What the hell does GMdawg know about the Dolphins and their No.1 draft pick?'

Anderchoke? Whos that? I'm sure you are NOT crazy enough to be refering to the QB that lead us to a 10-6 record.. only a fool would do that and you aren't no fool!

Or are you?

I've actually been thinking the exact same thing. You know that a draft is pretty weak at the top when there is talk of a Defensive Tackle going number one. The funny thing is last year was the exact opposite. There was lots of talent at the top, but once you got to the third round, you were picking guys who would normally be late draft picks. Thats why you saw lots of teams trading up last year.

In all honesty, if the Dolphins are interested in either Quinn or Anderson, I'd atleast be inclined to listen as a GM.

McFadden is and always has been the "yeah but" in my stance to keep both QB's. Honestly, if Miami wants to bail out of their pick, I would send Quinn or Anderson and our 4th round pick for the #1 overall selection.

Some people might say, oh that's not equal value but we're probably not going to get that anyway in any trade. To add a player like McFadden (when we have no young stud RB) is worth giving up what amounts to a 1st and a 4th.

Honestly, how devastating would it be to have Lewis and McFadden? Maybe it sounds crazy to give up a pick to some people but if we can get our hands on DMC, I gladly part with a 4th round DP. That's probably my breaking point though. If it needs to be more, I would move along. I wouldn't really want to throw in another player and I'd really prefer not to give up a first day pick this year.

Anyway, I'm kind of interested to see what happens. My guess is Dallas is the only team who may have the draft picks (if Miami isn't looking for a current player). Thank god New England doesn't have their other #1 because the thought of McFadden going to the Pats makes me want to puke. It's bad enough that they have a top 5 pick.

I most especially agree, in light of the fact that the Browns now have a pretty good offensive line,....I still say the D is not as weak as some make it out to be, considering the "rest" and "down time" achieved when you can run the ball and control the clock.

The worst that can happen with a trade of either QB is -- the performance of the QB will change somewhat.

A.) Anderson will get worse; or

B.) Quinn will get his shot.

It's a tossup. I'd like to have the pick, IF, it guarantees a star like McFadden. Right now, I don't see any other surefire picks. Even Dorsey is no guarantee,....

There's talk of the Cowboys packaging both of their #1's and Marion Barber to the Fins for the rights to the #1 overall (in this case, most likely McFadden).

That sounds like a seriously dumb trade for the Cowboys.

If I was a Cowboys fan and it went down that way, I'd pull my hair out.

especially if jones and barber are gone and mcfadden goes down.

If there is any truth to this at all and I'm the Dolphins GM, I make it happen today.

With that said, it's not as if Barber is some throw in prospect. He's a career 4.5 YPC back. What is Dallas thinking with Jones possibly leaving as well? Seems like a rather desperate move for a team that is a SB contender in 2008 without McFadden.

i could see Dallas moving some defensive guys (carpenter maybe) along with the two number ones, but to throw Barber into the mix is just crazy. But as far out as that is, if Miami did get those two number ones, could they send one and change to the Browns for Anderson?? Beck didn't look that good and is Parcell's going to stick with him?

I do see how thta would be crazy, giving up a situational runner to grab another younger Mcfadden , who has more speed than Barber, isnt crazy at all,

Barber is a hard tuff runner, dont get me wrong I'd take him on my team anyday, but he's not gonna break a longone, he will get you yards. but they also have julius jones who is faster than Marion. So to switch Marion with a Mcfadden, nothing crazy about that.

Clay, Jones is a UFA and from what i've heard he's looking to get out of Dallas and go somewhere where he can be the MAN.

Good point, that does make a diffrence, but I'd still pull the trigger to get a prospect like Mcfadden, I do like both Dallas backs but to me they are both lacking something which makes them premier RB in the leauge.
