would you want assante Samuel for either 5th or 6th round pick?

Report: Eagles willing to trade Samuel for 5th or 6thBy Marc Sessler NFL.com

Reports the Philadelphia Eagles were "looking for a 3d or 4th rd pick for (Samuel) were wrong. They are willing to take a 5th or 6th," tweeted Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

It's an interesting revelation. The Denver Post reported Thursday the Broncos have already offered a fifth- or sixth-round draft pick for Samuel, a deal the Eagles rejected. The Broncos were reportedly turned away on a separate proposal involving an undisclosed player.

We're looking at a surprisingly low cost for a proven cornerback who started 14 games last season. It speaks to Andy Reid's desire to streamline a defensive backfield that had players operating out of position last season. Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie proved that three's a crowd.

Interested teams remain aware of Samuel's age -- he's 31 -- and can't be thrilled with his contract. With two years left, Samuel's set to earn $10 million with a $100,000 offseason workout bonus in 2012 and $11.5 million with a $100,000 workout bonus in 2013. The Eagles are reportedly willing to chop $2.5 million off next season's bill, but that won't please Samuel.

Bottom line: Samuel's age and price tag aside, an NFL team will come calling. Look for a deal to be completed soon.

Oh I agree about the draft and all, but we have two 6th round picks so giving up one to take a flyer on a guy that might be better than the one we have wouldn't be horrible would it? would the player we draft in the 6th be better than him?

Money is a consideration for sure so that might be the reason to pass if nothing else.

Might be interesting to talk with them. But although he is "draft cheap" for a 6th, the cash consideration given his age is going to put people off, I suspect. What is his worth to us as an extra option for nickel and dime packages, and would we benefit having help the rooks along? I think it is too steep a price if he is just a glorified coach. Is he still playing well enough to justify the money?

If you believe he would beat out a 6th round draft choice for a roster spot pull the trigger.

I'm pretty sure he'd beat out a 6th round DB.....LOL This year anyway.. But,, hiim being here may stunt a young DB's chance for long term improvement.. And it's not even just that. What if we lose out on a kid at another position that ends up proving to be valuable..

Like I said, for a 6th,,, we could do a hell of a lot worse...

I think I just talked myself out of him...>LOL

I say pull the trigger. A 5th rounder(that may or may not make the team, let alone contribute) for a starter. Definately do it.

We also don't have a 6th round pick that can be traded. We have two 6th round compensatory picks, which are not tradeable.

If I could get him to rework that contract, I'd give up our 7th that isn't compensatory (#211).

What was the peak year of Asante Samuel? Is this guy 3 years past his peak? 4 years past his peak
5 years past his peak
6 years past his peak
or 7 years past his peak? Just say no. Not even for a 7th, which should be called a 9th.

Huh?

I get your point, but Samuel had 7 INT's in 2010. He didn't play as well last year, but the Eagles whole defense struggled under Juan Castillo last year.

Still, I wouldn't want him because he is 31 years old and cost $10 million. If his price was reduced I would take him for a fourth round pick.

Only makes sense for a team trying to win this year, and with some cap room -- not a good move for the Browns.

We've done this before...

Pick up an aging Eagles corner who has made a name for himself back when he was playing at his peak. I highly doubt the brass wants another Sheldon Brown on the squad.

His contract doesn't really mean much.. Before a trade is made, he's free to redo his contract if he's so inclined..

But why would he be so inclined if he can sit back and force the eagles to cut him to get out from under that contract and then he can choose where he ends up.

You guys are missing the point as to why he's even available in Philly. Philly plays a ton of Man Coverage, which is the same as the Browns. Samuel is a much better cover 2, zone corner. He's being moved because he's been playing poorly in the Eagles Man scheme and doesn't cover the slot receiver well. He wouldn't be a good fit in Cleveland, regardless of what we have to give up for him because of our playing style.

Maybe work for Shurmur or Heckert? Who knows.. Just saying, just because his contract is big, doesn't mean it will stay that way.

because he is more likely to make $$$ on a contract re-do where he has some leverage than he would on the open market at this point?

not sure if that is true or not, but I could see it being possible. and if a team was willing to give him $6-7mil on a re-do, then he might jump at it. might have to be a team expected to be better than the Browns though.

Thank you for posting that...it's not just his age...or just his contract...or just both of those things.

If he's not a fit, he does not make sense. If he were a fit, I think we could look past the age and maybe even the $$$. But that point is moot.

Thanks again for some clarity and sanity.

Restructure the contract and let's talk then. Worth the 5 or 6th rounder, not worth the $10 million

When the league had 28 teams and not all of these compensatory picks the 8th round would end at pick 224 and the 9th would start at pick 225.
I look at it as the Browns have 3 8th round and 2 9th round picks. I guess the tradable 211th overall would be a mid 8th.

If we can rework the contract, we could probably have him as part of them trading up to #4??

Not sure that I want him, though. Age is definitely a concern for guys in the secondary and it isn't like we're getting him at age 27 or 28.
He just doesn't fit the youth movement we've got going on.

He is gone. 7th round pick and reworked contract. Interesting to see what he does this year.

I was listening to someone talk about him yesterday on WFAN. They were saying that he only plays LCB and is purely a zone corner.

Kind of a pain the butt thing for a corner because if you have someone like Joe Haden, and he covers the top WR, what do you do if the WR goes in motion over to Samuel? You lose that advantage

Falcons will use him strictly as a nickle/dime back...and the only reason the probably got him? The Saints

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Okay thanks I wasn't sure. I was probably wrong then, but I honestly don't see him as a starting CB (at least not after this next year). Unless I was one player away (which they may feel) I wouldn't want him as anything more than a 3/4 CB.

well, they thought they were 1 player away last year when they gave up their draft for Julio and signed Ray Edwards to a big deal. they were wrong.

funny that it was their offense that let them down in the playoffs vs. Giants.

Good point. The Falcons seem to have the talent to win it, but for whatever reason I never consider that they actually WILL win it. I don't know how to explain it.

If he's strictly a nickleback than I think the Falcons are being foolish. He played the slot very poorly last season which is why he's gone from Philly. Unless he slides over as the nickel to cover the one and one of the CBs move over to the slot.
