Taking a moment away from the disappointment that is our season, let’s say something positive: this dude is GOOD.

We tasked him with basically limiting Lamar’s legs and he did it incredibly. Not just that, he’s so explosive and good laterally and making plays.

He’s such a bright spot and difference maker for our defense: when we have him we can play with anybody on that side of the ball.

Props to him; I hope he stays healthy and keeps his foot on the gas.

yeah i mentioned him in gameday, he's everywhere, if he didn't have such trash playing next to him and he could just concentrate on his part he'd be a game wrecker. For being a rookie and missing quite a bit of time in camp and season, crazy to think of his ceiling
Posted By: oobernoober Re: JOK - 11/30/21 03:51 PM
I think the most impressive part is that he's been instrumental in meeting the big boys (RBs) over the course of the season. Dude has been taking on bigger bodies and winning.
Posted By: FORTBROWNFAN Re: JOK - 11/30/21 04:06 PM
I also mentioned this in the post-game thoughts. He is so quick and I was also surprised by him taking on big backs, and winning those battles at times. I agree if we had better athletes at the other LB positions it would help but overall, the D has been about as good as I expected, especially after inserting about 6-7 new starters, It took a while for them to gel but they look solid.

Now can we please fix the offense. This season has been an opposite of last year. Score a lot of points and hope the D makes just one or two stops a game. This year it's hold them down and hope the O can get a couple TD and a FG.
Posted By: DCDAWGFAN Re: JOK - 11/30/21 04:09 PM
I have been very impressed with him. My only concern is that because he is a little light for the position, I hope he can stay healthy.
Posted By: Homewood Dog Re: JOK - 11/30/21 04:14 PM
JOK does look good! Jacob Phillips is the same type of player hustles sideline to sideline. If we can get them both on the field at the same time and they can stay healthy we could have quite a tandem at LB.
Posted By: clwb419 Re: JOK - 11/30/21 04:43 PM
Dude has been a beast when he's been on the field. I'd love us to draft Nakobe Dean (Georgia) to pair next to him
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: JOK - 11/30/21 05:30 PM
He's certainly been a bright spot we can point to. When we didn't pick him in round one I thought we had no shot at drafting him without trading up. Something i just couldn't see this FO doing. But there he sat in round 2 just waiting on us to grab. I was elated to say the least.

Nobody pimped him more than bonefish. When you're right, you're right. And he was right.
Posted By: BADdog Re: JOK - 11/30/21 08:49 PM
The steal of the draft!

I think at week 4 he was the highest graded linebacker in the NFL. Out of all linebackers not just rookies
Posted By: bonefish Re: JOK - 11/30/21 10:29 PM
This is the guy I have been pimping since the draft began. I totally flipped out when we got him.

Parsons is a good player and may win DROY but it will only be because of the games missed by JOK.

He is like a knife out there. Quick to the ball and a stone cold tackler.

I hope Woods keeps him on the field.

His ability to see it, and get there is something. His college tape jumps of the screen.

I am also super impressed with Newsome. He plays fearless. Has good technique. Good recovery speed. Seems to play both man and zone well.

We got two very good players in the draft. The others?

I will give them more time. So far not to good.

We are good with JOK. We need 2 more "good" linebackers to seal our D.
Posted By: WooferDawg Re: JOK - 12/01/21 01:35 AM
Please give Greg Newsome and Malik McDowell some love as well. The have been nice additions to the defense.
Posted By: DeisleDawg Re: JOK - 12/01/21 03:10 AM
Kind of feel he's going to turn into the Browns version of Polamalu...

My feeling is 2 very good players in one draft is at minimum a good draft. JOK is super, as is Newsome. Those 2 alone made the draft.

As DC said, my only concern is how he holds up. We have already seen him out for a number of games. That could just be a thing, or it could be a problem. Only time will tell. We probably need to think of him more as a safety type player.
Posted By: THROW LONG Re: JOK - 12/01/21 10:22 AM
He's just a guy. Just another guy.

Just another player, a first year player, pretty decent but who are you kidding if he is anything special.

He's not the rookie of the year or top 5 probably for it, may not be as good of a first year player as, Greg Newsome on this same team.

He does well, but I don't think he's deserving of a swollen head. I doubt he's the best linebacker,
he does what he does.
I'm not sure this player deserves his own topic thread but, Browns fans want something to hold onto.

He Missed a couple of games. He played in a couple of games, The Browns defense did whatever it did in each case,
I don't think he makes that big of an impact.

Ya he's a football player, Ya he's a good football player.
IT'S THE NFL they are supposed to be good football players.

Did he win the game against the bengals, (the team because of him)? I forget, but the Browns won the Bengals game by 25, did they do it because of J Owusu Koramoah.

::::::: I'm not Down on JOK! I'm down on FANS, knitting some kind of super hero costume for whomever, whatever, for, well,
a pretty good, really good football player who is in his First Year!

It's the NFL, there are a lot of really good football players. (sometimes!)

You have Jacob Philips, You have Clowney
You have Malcolm Smith, You have whats his name (Porter Gustin)
you have Mack Wilson, You have Joe J? what's His name.
you have JOK,
You have Tony Fields,
You have -------~~~~~~~ Ifeadi Obifumo
You have -------~~~~~~~ Myles Garrett.

You want 2 more good linebackers, I doubt you'll ever be satisfied, start an NFL team.
Posted By: Rishuz Re: JOK - 12/02/21 03:18 AM
I thought Newsome was going to be a dud honestly. Has totally surprised me. Looks great.

I think JOK is running away with DROY if he had stayed healthy and the Browns had a better record.

Would love to see one of our players get one of these "player of the year" awards. Thought it might be Myles this year, but with our record and the lack of meaningful plays late in games (his token sack always comes on a meaningless down usually in the first half), I don't see it happening.
Posted By: waterdawg Re: JOK - 12/02/21 06:41 AM
Newsome is going to get a bunch of PI calls if they cant teach him to turn and look for the ball on deep throws .

JOK has a chance to be a legitimate star in the NFL

Takitaki is actually getting better. He is at least playing average football at his position.

Walker is just horrible.

We need one more average LB on this team and we can have an above-average unit with one star.

That is a good point. I have/had been on taki last year, but he HAS upped his game. He is playing pretty darn good football.

I remember you and I were both high on JOK - both of us would have been more than happy to take him in the first round. . . or trade up to the top of the 2nd round to get him ! Newsome is turning into a more reliable CB than Greedy or Ward, I'm digging that pick now, and grateful we got both of them.
Posted By: Dawgs4Life Re: JOK - 12/02/21 01:16 PM
I agree w/all of this. Walker is really bad. His lateral movement is such a liability and teams really go after it.

I’m anxious to see Phillips and JOK out there together.
Posted By: THROW LONG Re: JOK - 12/02/21 01:34 PM
I only forgot to list Antony Walker, because, halfway down, I assumed he was back up there at the top of the list.

I think Ward, Williams, and Newsome will be the best CB group in football next year.

They aren't even the best Cb group (bengals), in the AFC North, this year.

I don't think anybody, or at minimum very many who were down on the guy. It's not like anybody picked him out of nowhere. I think we got him at a bit of a discount, but not a steep discount.

My only concern, and it isn't a big concern, is how he holds up if he stays more or less in a LB role. To me he is kind of like Phillips. Part of me wants him to gain some weight, but in doing so is that going to impact his biggest value, his speed at the position. maybe there is room to balance the scales a bit, maybe there isn't.

The LB position is at a crossroad much like QB was several years ago. The big LB is being phased out in favor of the smaller, faster LB. If we are going to go with the smaller player, which I think we should, then we are going to have to change direction with out DT's. We seem to favor the smaller, quicker guys, but to me you need a big guy who demands double teams to help keep those lighter backers from having to stand up to mauling guards all the time.

There is a good one playing today, Georgia DT, Jordon Davis. I hope we can get that guy. The guy is a beast.
Posted By: bonefish Re: JOK - 12/04/21 04:34 PM
It is all about scheme fit.

That is why he was there when we got him.

IMO I throw all that weight and size out the door. Scheme is important.

I look at the player and what he showed he can do. Ray Lewis was small for his position.

JOK is good. It was obvious in his college tape. It is obvious now. The game has become about space and how to cover in space.

JOK does not have to take on blockers. He moves around them.

When you see him make tackles. It is like he just appears. But when you see how he gets there. He is a like a runner finding the hole.

Linebackers used to be judged on how they could shed blockers. The game has moved past that.

Mobile quarterbacks like Lamar. Spread offenses and four receiver sets. Pass catching TE's.

Speed. You need speed.
Posted By: waterdawg Re: JOK - 12/04/21 09:13 PM
+ , Really like what JOK brings to the game ( wait for it ) But I would love a BIG snobber knocker Middle Linebacker . We have been in need for a long time .

The thing I noticed about JOK, is even though, he isn't very big, it is more the way he plays. He is an excellent form tackler. If it is possible, he always seems to go thigh high and wraps up. A thing of beauty. But when he goes high, he shows tremendous power for his size, and uses his shoulder, not helmet. I just think he is one of those gifted guys with natural strength.

The thought of him and Phillips sounds good to me. Quick guys who tackle well.
Posted By: bugs Re: JOK - 12/05/21 04:09 AM
Bone, what would really help the Browns is another LB/SS (hybrid) that plays similar to JOK. Maybe the following are players Berry seeks in 2022:
Dean, Georgia;
Smith, Penn State;
Lloyd, Utah.

I think if Woods remains they hone in on a 4-2-5 defensive scheme.
Posted By: bonefish Re: JOK - 12/05/21 12:07 PM
This tape is an excellent breakdown of what JOK brings.

Two things jump out. Recognition and speed.

Then you see excellent technique in tackling ability. There are a couple plays (the one with Zeitler) where the blocker is in perfect position to block him.
He beats the block and makes the play. In another the guard is right there. The guard is moving to his left. Jok stabs him with his left hand and shoots past him to make the tackle.

https://247sports.com/nfl/cleveland...-cleveland-browns-177251522/#177251522_1

He leads all defensive rookies in Pro Football Focus grade, and he is in the top-five of all linebackers in the NFL.

IMO you are watching a guy who will be a perennial pro bowl player.
Posted By: mgh888 Re: JOK - 12/05/21 12:13 PM
Thanks for sharing. He's a very exciting player to watch as he literally jumps off the field of play at you. I do believe he is the epitome of what Dorsey once referred to as "a football player".

Edit: I just re-watched these plays. Some things really jumped out the second time of watching in addition to just thinking wow . . . He always has body control, takes good angles and does not over pursue. Clearly he's fast and reads the game/reacts quickly ... but another element is the way he doesn't let himself get engaged by the linemen and blockers. Maybe unfair comparison - but when you watch Walker, he's always wrapped up in a block and neutralized. And maybe that's part of what Walker has to do to free up JOK ... but it's uncanny how JOK can slip by and through blockers. Very enjoyable viewing.

I have never bought a player jersey.

I may break down and get his.
Posted By: Dawgs4Life Re: JOK - 12/06/21 10:12 AM
JOK would be on my short list too. Chubb, Garrett, JOK
Posted By: eotab Re: JOK - 12/06/21 02:17 PM
I was high on Michah Parsons that is who I wanted...I guess a minature Just who I wanted to be on our roster...but JOK is one darn good ball player that if we couldnt get Micah then I was happy with JOK.
Posted By: bonefish Re: JOK - 12/06/21 03:18 PM
Parsons is a terrific player no doubt. I knew he would go very high.

But it was JOK who won the Butkus award as college's best linebacker.

There is a difference in how they play. Parsons is really a specialty pass rusher. He is more of a traditional linebacker with great rush moves.

JOK has more versitility and is better in coverage. There is no knock on either both are great players.

Parsons was the 12th pick in the first round. JOK was the 52 pick.

I am still amazed we got him there.
Posted By: eotab Re: JOK - 12/06/21 03:35 PM
Parsons was a sideline to sideline LB...Cowboys had injuries turning Parsons loose as a pass rusher he does everything just like JOK both good Im very happy with JOK him and Newsome are both studs and I have been noting this in my what I saw threads. Cant get better than what we got! jmho
Posted By: eotab Re: JOK - 12/06/21 03:41 PM
Just saying why my attention was not on JOK I wanted us to move up and get Parsons to match with Garrett figuring he can play anywhere on the LOS moving around attacking from wherever...

A great assett to out defense. jmhoo JOK is a pleasant surprise and giving us what I wanted - just needs to put on the muscle
