Titans plan to hire Brian Callahan as head coach: Former Bengals OC to replace Mike Vrabel in Tennessee - CBSSports.com
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...-oc-to-replace-mike-vrabel-in-tennessee/

The Tennessee Titans are planning to hire former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their new head coach, according to CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. Callahan replaces Mike Vrabel, who was fired earlier this month after two straight losing seasons. At 39 years old, Callahan becomes the sixth-youngest head coach in the NFL.

Callahan, who is the son of former Oakland Raiders head coach and current Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan, spent the past five seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Bengals. Previously, he served as the quarterbacks coach for the Raiders and Detroit Lions, and got his start in the league as a coaching assistant with the Denver Broncos. He was an offensive assistant in Denver when the Broncos won Super Bowl 50.

Callahan has worked with some of the best quarterbacks in the league, including Peyton Manning, Joe Burrow, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr, and the Titans have a young quarterback in need of developing in Will Levis. Callahan had to work through some offensive adversity this year when Burrow went down with a season-ending wrist injury in November. Backup quarterback Jake Browning, who previously had never started a game in the NFL, stepped in and went 4-3 as the new starter, winning three games in a row -- two of those victories coming in overtime. Browning finished the 2023 campaign ranked first in completion percentage (70.4%) and tied for fourth in yards per attempt (8.0).

Developing Levis is an important goal, but so is resetting the offense at large. Tennessee has had one of the worst offenses over the last three years, finishing No. 17 in total yards in 2021, No. 30 in 2022 and No. 28 this past season. The Titans averaged 17.9 points per game in 2023. Only the New York Jets, New York Giants, New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers averaged fewer points.

Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said at the beginning of this coaching search that the staff her next head coach brings in is "very important." Now, with the hiring of a first-year head coach, that staff becomes even more important.

Uh-oh.

So, is losing Callahan, the OC, more of a loss to Cincy than Callahan, the OL coach, a loss to Cleveland?

Did Bill leave to be with Brian ?
I think that they are anticipating it.

I think more like expecting it, and he should.

We will be in good shape.
j/c:

Yesterday, during Berry's press conference, he was asked whether or not the team was done replacing coaches after the three recent removals. He said something to the effect of "staff still remains in flux/fluid" regarding any more potential moves. I wouldn't be surprised if that comment was made, perhaps in part if not entirely, because of Callahan.

If we lose Bill at least we have a good replacement in Scott Peters.

Yep. I am sure that Callahan works with his asst O line guys as well as with players. Peters had to be teaching things the way Callahan prescribed.

We also just interviewed some Oline coach from Seattle.

Hard to say if Bill leaves to join his son.

Since Bill was a HC before working under his son may or may not be a good thing.

Family dynamics are complicated.

We shall see. Maybe Bill is happy in Cleveland?

Should Bill Callahan leave, Scott Peters has 4 seasons as the Browns assistant OL coach plus Peters would have the input from his 3 experienced veteran OLinemen who could be utilized as a valuable resource to help fill any void that might exist.

I would not expect any drop off in OLine performance should Callahan leave.

Looks like he owns the Tip of the Spear OL Clinic as well. Kinda like what LeCharles Bentley does/did??

Yeah, at first I was "oh well, that really sucks", then I realized he's been here long enough to hand over duties without too much of a drop off.

I didn't realize Peters was actually a wizard. I feel much better now.

It has not been a secret that Callahan would like to coach with his son. Bill was open to joining the Cincinnati Bengals’ staff, where Brian was the offensive coordinator. However, head coach Zach Taylor vetoed that move.

A. He gone
B. Anybody recall this 'veto'?

So,what you guys are saying is that all those coaches that spent time with Belicheck should make good head coaches.Interesting.

Head coaches or coaches, in general?

You make an excellent point. There's a vast difference in being a coordinator or position coach than being a HC.

While it would be cool to reunite Callahan with his father, Bill, the Browns’ offensive line coach, it doesn’t sound like that is going to happen. The Browns have been fiercely protective of Bill in recent years, and he is among the highest paid assistant coaches in the NFL.

I cannot say that I am surprised.

Many head coaches have had their sons coach on their teams.

I don't know if there have been cases of fathers working for their sons?

If I'm a young and new HC

The last thing I feel I would want would to have my father coaching on my team

Close or not close to my father

If I was having a successful season, I wouldn't want people saying it was due to having a father coaching on the team who was known as a successful coach.

And him being the reason for the success of the team

Maybe it's okay, just not what I would want

As a HC I would want the best of the best and if having my dad as the OL coach helps the team then maybe

Bummer. That’s an impactful loss for the Browns.

Nah. Dad's a consummate professional and one of the GOAT. He'll stay in his lane and make your life much easier. With ZERO drama.
Well...crap.

I know great players don't make great coaches

I just wonder if Joe Thomas would be able to coach as an OL coach

Or at least an assistant

If the Browns ever won the Super Bowl, MKC and Grossi would be miserable.

He certainly knows 'the game within in the game.' I've heard him talk about OL play for years. He knows the craft, because he studied relentlessly.
He was a great team mate, so he gets the locker room.
Browns homer from the day he was hired. Loved working for this team.

So why not?

We could probably do worse.

He doesn't want to coach full time.
Posted By: Clemdawg Re: Bengals OC become to Titans Head Coach - 02/03/24 07:37 AM
Kinda don't blame him.
His life is pretty cush/ideal right now.

Correct. He's happy as a lark coaching his kids track team.
We have a capable coach in Scott Peters for the O-line.

Huge loss for the Browns. Huge.

According to Breer’s “rumor”, the staff was not happy with AVP being fired.

I'm sure he speaks the gospel since he was simply repeating what someone told him and taking their word as being true. In most social circles people call that a rumor.
