Just a random thread about things where the stories seem so far out in field it's hard to believe that they actually happened even though they're true....

Tennessee Air National Guardsman applied to be a hit man on a website - and got arrested, FBI says

A 21-year-old Air National Guardsman in Tennessee is facing federal charges after sending his resume to a nefariously-named site — all because he said he needed money to support his family, court documents said.

The FBI alleges Josiah Ernesto Garcia used a site called "Rent-a-Hitman" to apply for a job as an assassin. Garcia was arrested at a park in Hendersonville, Tennessee, on Wednesday by an undercover agent, according to a news release.

It's the latest in a string of reported arrests linked to the website, originally created in 2005 to advertise a cyber security startup company that never took off. Instead, it became a parody site— complete with false testimonials, a request form, and a job application for aspiring hitmen.

Founder Bob Innes told People Magazine in November 2022 that at least 30 people have been arrested after inquiring about hiring a hitman. The website is currently maintained by an administrator in the state of California, according to the criminal complaint.

According to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, Garcia began "looking for employment" as an assassin in February. Garcia first asked the website administrator for a job description and later included his correct address and birthdate.

The website's administrator responded, asking for a copy of Garcia's resume, headshot and identification. Garcia's resume indicated he was an expert marksman and had been employed in the Air National Guard.

The Air National Guard confirmed to CBS News that Garcia joined as an airman first class in July 2021.

Garcia had apparently been nicknamed "Reaper," which was "Earned from Military experience and Marksmanship." When there was no reply, Garcia followed up with the administrator repeatedly — saying he was eager to begin work as soon as possible.

At the direction of the FBI, the administrator responded to Garcia with an email stating; "Josiah, a Field Coordinator will be in touch in the near future. You will receive a message when they are ready. Timing is based on client needs."

An undercover FBI agent then called the suspect in April. When asked why he wanted to do this, Garcia responded he wanted to do something similar to what he was already doing. He said he wanted a flexible schedule because he was planning on going to college next year, the criminal complaint said.

"I was looking into civilian law enforcement but that's not for me," he told the agent, according to the criminal complaint. "I wanted something more exciting."

When the two met in person, the agent told Garcia multiple times that he did not have to do this. His alleged response?

"I've been looking into this for some time now. I was looking for a way to make good money," he said.

He would eventually agree to kill an individual for $5,000. On Wednesday, Garcia met the undercover agent at a park and was provided with information on a fictional individual, including photographs and a down payment of $2,500.

After agreeing to the terms of the murder arrangement — including the terms of payment and a description of the target — Garcia asked the agent if he needed to provide a photograph of the dead body.

He was then arrested by FBI agents. After his arrest, Garcia said that he was looking for work because his family could not afford rent, court documents said.

Garcia was charged with the use of interstate facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Cash Me If You Can: Oregon Drivers Hit Jackpot When Man Drains Family Account and Tosses $200K Out Car Window

Police say the 38-year-old driver threw a whopping $200,000 in cash from his car as he drove along an Interstate in Eugene, Oregon.

It's a cash giveaway on the highway.

Look at these people counting $100 bills, which had been thrown from the window of a speeding car.

Police say the 38-year-old driver threw a whopping $200,000 in cash from his car as he drove along an Interstate in Eugene, Oregon.

And get this — cops say he drained his family's bank account and then proceeded to literally throw it out the window.

"This guy was driving up and down I-5, dropping out tons of cash," a driver on the scene told Inside Edition during an interview.

He was one of a handful of motorists who pulled over looking for more bills.

Word spread fast.

"Some friends called me and said they got $2,000," one woman searching for wayward bills told Inside Edition.

They left their cars on the side of the road with traffic whizzing by in their quest for unclaimed money.

Just a handful of people wonder if this was the right thing to do.

"We have one of the people who picked up the large amount of cash pulled over to the side of 1-5 wanting to know what to do with the money," one dispatcher relayed to state troopers after the incident.

The next morning, stragglers were still looking for a few bucks that may have been left behind.

The dude, who is said to have tossed out the family bank account, has been identified as Colin Davis McCarthy.

State Troopers say he does not face theft charges because his name was on the bank account — along with a bunch of other family members.

"This guy isn't in any legal trouble at all because he was on the account," legal analyst Royal Oakes tells Inside Edition. "He had a right to throw the money away as crazy as it sounds."

The family says even though the odds are long, they're asking anyone who found any of the cash to please return it to Oregon State Police because that money is very much needed by the family.

Experts say one way to avoid this is by having a required signature for any withdrawals from a joint account.

It was raining hundred dollar bills y'all!

Gotta wonder if he has a hidden bank account if he's willing to throw away $200k of money just to screw (presumably) his wife...

The way the story reads it seems as if there are more family members on the account than just his wife. From the story.....

Thieves made off with 200 sneakers worth over $13,000 — but they were all just for the right foot: report

Three people in Peru have been caught on the wrong foot after a shoe shop robbery went wrong.

Unidentified persons broke into a shoe shop in the central Peruvian city of Huancayo on Sunday and made off with 200 sneakers — but they were all for the right foot, various media outlets including the BBC reported Thursday.

The heist is worth a total of 50,000 Peruvian Soles, or $13,400, Peruvian newspaper El Comercio reported Tuesday, citing another local outlet Diario Correo. The BBC reports these estimates came from the owner of the unnamed shoe shop.

Footage from the shop's security camera captured the crime, El Comercio reported. It showed the thieves breaking the padlock on their third attempt at 3.30 a.m. on Sunday and making off with boxes of shoes on a tricycle. The heist included sneakers from well-known global brands.

"We have gathered evidence at the scene. The unusual thing about this robbery is that shoes from only the right foot have been stolen" local police chief Eduan Díaz told Peruvian media, according to the BBC.

"With the footage and the fingerprints, we will be able to locate those individuals," he added.

A Tuesday tweet from El Comercio showed a photo of the messy shoe shop following the crime. The post has been viewed nearly 86,000 times so far.

Huancayo law enforcement authorities are investigating the crime, per El Comercio.

I bet it's not the first time, so the store now only keeps the right shoe out on the floor. smile

or the thieves where idiots and grabbed the box for the display shoes and didn't grab the shoe on the display to put in the box.

Either way, you have to laugh at just how dumb many thieves are.

‘Dead’ Woman Starts Knocking on Her Coffin During Wake

Retired nurse Bella Montoya was 76 when she died—or so her family thought. Despite being declared dead at an Ecuadorian hospital, Montoya revived at her own wake and shocked attendees when she started knocking on her coffin. “It gave us all a fright,” Gilberto Berbera, Montoya’s son, told the Associated Press. “There were about 20 of us there. After about five hours of the wake, the coffin started to make sounds. My mom was wrapped in sheets and hitting the coffin, and when we approached we could see that she was breathing heavily.” Montoya was rushed to the hospital, where she remained in serious condition Monday. She was initially declared dead on Friday after she was checked into the Martín Icaza Hospital in Babahoyo with a possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest, Ecuador’s Health Ministry said in a statement. Now the government is looking for answers, launching an investigation into the hospital.

Shows you don't want to "die" in Ecuador.

Kind of horrible to think about, but over time I am sure that untold thousands of "dead" people have awaked after already being covered in the ground.

At least this lady was discovered, thank God.

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall once she gets somewhat better and starts to read the riot act at people. She is going to be pis...ticked.

If that was my Mom...somebody else would be filling that coffin pretty quick.

Probably figuratively, but you get the point.

I don't know, they declared her dead, moved her body into a coffin, all without her waking up? Apparently they don't do like embalming in Ecuador, just throw fresh meat in the box and bury it?

Actually I never actually understood the entire embalming thing. You're going to become worm food anyway. And you're already dead. So why some crazy process just to delay the inevitable? I understand why people who are terminally will doing anything they can to stay alive. But after your dead I just don't get it.

A sleeping man dreamed someone broke into his home. He fired at the "intruder" and shot himself, authorities say.

A 62-year-old man is facing firearms charges in Illinois after authorities say he accidentally shot himself in the leg in his sleep —while dreaming that he was defending himself against an "intruder" in his home.

The man, identified as Mark Dicara of Lake Barrington, used a .357 Magnum revolver that he owned to fire the shot at around 9:50 p.m. on April 10, the Lake County government said in a news release issued on Tuesday. According to Lake County sheriff's deputies, on the night of the incident Dicara dreamed someone was breaking into his home, and retrieved the gun to shoot at whomever he believed was the "intruder."

But, when he fired the revolver, Dicara shot himself in the leg instead and woke from the dream, a subsequent investigation found. Authorities also confirmed during the probe that an attempted burglary did not happen at Dicara's residence, and there was no intruder on his property.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene after receiving a call reporting a person with a gunshot wound at the residence, the county said. They found Dicara when they arrived, suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg and losing what they described as a "significant amount of blood." It was later determined that the round discharged from his gun went through the leg and lodged itself in his bedding, so no one else was harmed. Deputies applied a tourniquet to the leg after finding Dicara and transported him to a hospital in the area for treatment.

During the investigation that followed, authorities realized that Dicara owned and used the revolver despite not having a Firearm Owners Identification card, which is mandatory in Illinois in order to legally possess a gun. Authorties said Dicara's identification card had previously been revoked, although they did not share details as to why. The Lake County State's Attorney's Office approved two charges for Dicara, for possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and reckless discharge of a firearm. They are considered Class 3 and Class 4 felonies, respectively.

Dicara was arrested in Lake County on Monday and then released after posting $150,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 29.

I’m with you. I’ll go another level. I think even being buried is a stupid thing. What a waste of land. We bury bodies, mark it with a slab of granite, and within two or three generations or so it’s never visited again. Ridiculous. We should all be rendered to ash. Or, as now allowed in some states, composted. The only way we should be buried is if they leave you intact and plant a tree on you to create a memorial forest. Something that actually brings purpose and beauty. Cemeteries are wastelands of grass that needs to be mowed, and toxic embalming chemicals. The entire funeral industry is a sham. Mahogany boxes with silk liners? For what?! $$$$$$$ That’s all.

The funeral industry disgusts me with their greed, preying on out-dated customs and grieving survivors.

I’ve told my loved ones that when I die, I don’t want a service, funeral, coffin, nothing. Also told them that if they want all that, I’m not paying for it.

There is a science-heavy university in Nova Scotia that accepts - or used to - human remains for scientific purposes, so they can have me. I won’t need my body parts - I’ll be busy being dead.

I also wouldn’t mind if they dumped me a couple miles off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, and I know a few fishermen who would probably do that for me, if it’s legal and maybe if it isn’t.

I'm an organ donor although I'm not sure how many organs I'll have left they can use. lol After that I will be cremated. I've told my wife and my daughter that if anyone wishes to keep the ashes they are welcome to them. If not, I have a designated spot where the ashes will be scattered. I'm sure those options are all legal and far cheaper than any funeral. I've also told them I don't want any services. If they want to do some celebration of life type ceremony, do it at home and don't be crying and whining.

Now the final nail is in the Coffin for the woman from Equador who they thought died but was alive, is now dead..... again...

Ecuadoran woman who knocked on coffin during her own wake has died

A 76-year-old woman who had been declared dead, and surprised her relatives by knocking on her coffin during her wake earlier this month, has died after seven days in intensive care, her family said Saturday.

Gilberto Barbera Montoya, the woman's son, told The Associated Press that doctors at the state hospital where she was rushed after the initial incident said that she died on Friday evening.

Bella Montoya initially had been admitted with a possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest, and when she did not respond to resuscitation a doctor on duty declared her dead, the ministry said.

On June 9, Montoya reportedly woke up and started knocking after spending five hours inside her coffin at a funeral home in Babahoyo, southwest of Quito.

Similar events have happened in the United States recently. In December an Iowa care facility mistakenly pronounced a 66-year-old resident dead and had her transported to a funeral home, where she woke up "gasping for air." In 2020, a young woman who was declared dead opened her eyes as she was about to be embalmed.

Ecuador's health ministry confirmed in a statement Saturday that Montoya died from an ischemic stroke after spending a week in intensive care. It added that Montoya had remained under "permanent surveillance," but didn't provide further information on the medical investigation surrounding the case.

Barbera Montoya said that he hadn't yet received any report from the authorities on the medical explanation of what happened, and warned that things "are not going to stay like this." He added that a sister of the deceased woman had formally complained about the incident, seeking to identify the doctor who declared her dead to begin with.

The remains of Montoya, who was a retired nurse, are back at the same funeral home where she woke up. Her son told the AP that she will be buried at a public cemetery.

A technical committee has been formed to review how the hospital issues death certificates, the country's ministry of health said last week.

Invasive "Frankenfish" that can survive on land for days is found in Missouri: "They are a beast"

June 26, 2023 / 10:06 AM / CBS/AP

An invasive fish that is a voracious predator capable of surviving out of water for days was recently caught in southeastern Missouri, causing worry that the hard-to-contain species will spread and become a problem.

The northern snakehead was caught last month in a drainage pool at Duck Creek Conservation Area. The last time one of the so-called "Frankenfish" showed up in Missouri was four years ago, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Wildlife officials sounded the alarm, but many anglers say they're unaware of the fish, its potential impact and what to do if they catch one.

U.S. officials say that anyone who catches a northern snakehead should photograph it and "kill the fish by freezing it or putting it on ice for an extended length of time."
snakeheadfish.jpg

The northern snakehead is originally from east Asia, where they are a delicacy believed to have healing powers. They reproduce quickly, have sharp teeth, can wiggle across muddy land and grow to nearly 3 feet in length.

The federal government in 2002 banned the import and interstate transport of live northern snakeheads, but they are flourishing in some parts of the U.S.

"They are knocking on the door in Arkansas," said Dave Knuth, a Missouri fisheries management biologist based in Cape Girardeau. "They are a beast."

The catch in May was worrisome, Knuth said. "I didn't expect them to be this far up the state already," he said.

The first northern snakehead found in Missouri was caught in 2019 out of a ditch within the St. Francois River levee system in the Missouri Bootheel region.

On May 19, state workers using a net to catch bait for a youth jug-fishing clinic pulled a 13-inch northern snakehead out of Duck Creek Conservation Area. Knuth said the fish was found in the same watershed as the first one, though about 70 river miles north of the initial catch.

Wildlife officials spent two days searching for additional northern snakeheads in the conservation area and neighboring Mingo National Wildlife Refuge. No others were found, but they fear others are lurking, at least in low numbers.

Larry Underwood, 73, who lives near the conservation area, wished the state well in its efforts to keep out the northern snakehead. As he fished, he noted that the state also tries to control feral hogs, but with little luck.

"It's kind of like the hogs," he said. "You are going to eliminate that? Yeah, good luck."

In 2019, the snakehead was also spotted in Pennsylvania and in Georgia. After an angler reported catching one in a private pond in Gwinnett County, Georgia wildlife officials issued a warning to other fishermen: "Kill it immediately."

In 2015, a team of U.S. Geological Survey scientists found that a group of adult northern snakehead collected from Virginia waters of the Potomac River south of Washington D.C. were infected with a species of Mycobacterium, a type of bacteria known to cause chronic disease among a wide range of animals.

I guess they have to be politically correct. If it was me, and probably like most, just stab the sucker through the head with your knife or multitool.

I am no big fisherman by any means, but I have been many times over the years and have never known a fisherman who didn't have one of those 2 things in the tacklebox.

If you fish long enough, you are going to hook something you just aren't going to fool with. You just cut the line.

Yeah, many times when I fish it's not an all day event. More like sunrise to mid-late morning. It's rare when I'm lugging a cooler around with me. And actually, if one is being politically correct you would think killing it quickly and putting it out of its misery would be more humane than slowly freezing it to death.

Dead/not dead happened again!

‘Dead’ 49-Year-Old Woman Wakes Up on Her Way to Her Own Funeral

The grieving family members of a woman presumed to be dead were left shocked after she suddenly woke up on her way to her funeral in Thailand. Chataporn Sriphonla, 49, supposedly died on Thursday after returning home from the hospital, where she was being treated for cancer but “only had a slim chance at survival,” Sriphonla’s mom told The U.S. Sun. “We were heartbroken to find she had died,” the mother said. The family quickly prepared for her funeral, arranging for the 49-year-old to be cremated and buying a casket. But while in transit to a temple where Sriphonla’s body was going to be stored overnight before cremation, she opened her eyes and gasped awake. She was immediately rushed to the hospital and remains under medical care. The spooky incident parallels a similar one in Ecuador, where a ‘dead’ woman knocked on her coffin during her wake. Soon after, the 76-year-old died in the hospital.

Indiana Woman Arrested for DUI During Job Interview at Sheriff's Department, Authorities Say

An Indiana woman was arrested for driving under the influence after arriving at job interview with the Marshall County Sheriff's Department, authorities said.

An Indiana woman was arrested at the Marshall County Sheriff's Department after she showed up for a job interview and smelled of alcohol, authorities said.

Nicole Sniadecki, 39, was charged with driving under the influence and released after posting $1,500 bail, the department said.

The woman arrived about 8:45 a.m. for a meeting at the sheriff's office related to her application for employment with the sheriff's office, authorities said.

While speaking with a captain, he noticed her speech was slurred and she smelled of alcohol, the department said.

Sniadecki acknowledged she had consumed alcohol that morning before driving to the sheriff's office, authorities said.

A breath test showed she had a blood alcohol content of .158, nearly twice the legal limit, the department said.

Her first court appearance is scheduled for July 18, according to online records.

Human waste leaking from truck causes crashes on Connecticut highway

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Human waste leaking from a tractor trailer on a Connecticut highway caused crashes including one involving two state police cruisers as vehicles spun out of control, authorities said.

No major injuries were reported in Monday night’s mayhem on Interstate 95 in Bridgeport. Troopers arrested the truck driver on several charges, alleging he knew there was a leak but kept driving.

The wrecks began shortly after 11 p.m. when the leaking waste caused extremely slick conditions in the northbound lanes, state police said.

A motorcycle rider lost control and fell onto the road, ending up in a hospital with minor injuries. Vehicles crashed into other vehicles and concrete barriers.

Another tractor trailer skidded into a parked state police cruiser, which then struck a second parked cruiser in the median. Both cruisers were unoccupied as troopers were helping others involved in wrecks.

State police reports indicate 10 vehicles were in accidents. The northbound lanes were closed for several hours during the cleanup.

Troopers said they found the driver after witnesses reported the company name seen on the truck. Authorities contacted the company, H.I. Stone & Son, which then called the driver and told him to pull over and wait for police, state police said.

The driver was charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and failing to secure a load. He posted $25,000 bail.

H.I. Stone & Son’s owner, Harry Stone, declined to comment Tuesday.

A family of 3 found dead at a remote Colorado campsite tried to escape civilization but had no survival experience and were relying on YouTube videos, relative says

Two sisters and a 14-year-old boy who died at a Colorado campsite were trying to live "off the grid," but relied mainly on YouTube videos for survival knowledge, their relative said.

Rebecca Vance, 42, her 14-year-old son, and her 41-year-old sister Christina Vance were found partially mummified in the Gunnison National Forest after a hiker stumbled across their tent on July 9, authorities said on Tuesday.

They intended to live off the grid, and likely started camping in July 2022, Gunnison County Coroner Michael Barnes told The Colorado Sun.

But the sisters and the boy, who was not named by officials, had no survival experience and were relying on YouTube videos and online research, Trevala Jara, the Vances' stepsister, told The Washington Post.

A friend who successfully lives away from civilization also gave them tips on how to survive, Jara added, per the outlet.

Jara said she was worried for her sister and nephew, and offered to let them use her RV and a generator to practice living by themselves in the mountains. But they rejected the suggestion, and were confident that they were well prepared, Jara told The Post.

"I was absolutely scared and worried for them," she said, per outlet. "The last time they even went camping was when we were kids."

She said her sisters refused to tell their family where they would be staying, and added that Rebecca Vance had become distrustful of the media and "influences of the world," especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Christine Vance joined her sister and nephew thinking that they might have a better chance of survival if she came along, Jara said, per The Post.

"I don't want people to assume or think that they were crazy, because they weren't," Jara said. "If I can reach anybody who thinks they can go off the grid by watching YouTube or going on the internet, I would tell them to please think twice."

Barnes, the coroner, suspected the trio may have died due to starvation or extreme cold during last year's "significantly harsh winter." However, the official cause of death has not been determined.

He added that the family had "a lot of literature with them about outdoor survival and foraging," but appeared to be buying groceries from a store.

They had attempted to build a lean-to shelter — a simple, makeshift structure to rest in — but were not able to successfully complete the construction by winter.

Rapper arrested on a murder charge after allegedly writing a song and making a music video about the crime

By Jennifer Henderson and Travis Nichols, CNN
Updated 4:20 PM EDT, Fri September 8, 2023

CNN

A Nevada rapper was arrested on a murder charge after Las Vegas police said he “confessed to the murder in his (song) lyrics.”

Kenjuan McDaniel was arrested August 29 on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon, a news release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said. His bail was set Thursday at $1 million with electronic monitoring, according to court records.

CNN has reached out to McDaniel’s attorney for comment but has not heard back.

McDaniel had been considered a person of interest in the death of Randall Wallace on September 18, 2021, in part due to his connection to a vehicle that matched the description of one used during the crime, according to a redacted arrest warrant.

In July, a detective noticed a music video posted by McDaniel on YouTube and reviewed the lyrics and video, the warrant said.

“Detectives noted the music video bore a sufficient level of similarity to the details of the murder. This includes the fact, that Kenjuan confessed to the murder in his lyrics. … Details provided by Kenjuan in his music video were not released to the public and would not be common knowledge,” the warrant said.

One lyric included in the warrant is, “Parked the car, double back on feet, the smartest way to slide, drove in, double lock yo man, make sure you get yo bod’,” which the warrant states includes details of the killing that were not released to the public. In addition, it states that while McDaniel rapped in the video, he reenacted elements of the killing that were “consistent with evidence at the scene.”

“The facts gathered during the investigation were obtained separately from the music video. The music video further validated the results of the investigation,” it added.

McDaniel has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Journalist Accidentally Names Her Baby ‘Methamphetamine Rules’

Journalist Kirsten Drysdale tested the limits of legal baby names in Australia when she successfully named her newborn son “Methamphetamine Rules.” Drysdale works for What the FAQ, a TV show on Australia’s ABC network in which hosts answer perplexing questions submitted by viewers. When one viewer wanted to know what baby names parents could legally get away with, a heavily pregnant Drysdale decided to do the research herself. “We thought we would submit the most outrageous name we could think of, assuming it would be rejected,” she said, according to The Guardian. “But it didn’t turn out that way – unfortunately Methamphetamine Rules slipped through the cracks.” A spokesperson for New South Wales’ registry of births, deaths, and marriages conceded the oversight and said they would fix their verification process and allow Drysdale to change her baby’s name. The agency’s policies indicate that it rejects names that are offensive or not in the public interest as well as names that are over 50 characters long, contain symbols, or could be considered a title or rank like queen or king.

Fascinating? I guess. Would I eat it -- hell no. I have both a filament and a resin 3d printer, they're a lot of fun to play with and can fulfil a lot of different needs, food should never be one of them, yuck.

Here's the part that cracks me up...

Part of this push is down to the suggestion that printed food alternatives could make food production more sustainable, which is a particular concern in the fishing industry. An estimated 34 percent of global fish stocks are overfished, occurring when fish are caught faster than they can reproduce, meaning that populations decline.

Woman gets stuck in Michigan outhouse trying to get Apple Watch, police remind public not to climb into toilets

“The toilet was removed, and a strap was used to hoist the woman out to safety," Michigan State Police said about the incident at an outhouse bathroom at Dixon Lake.

A woman in Michigan was rescued on Tuesday after getting stuck in an outhouse while trying to retrieve her Apple Watch, forcing police to remind people not to climb inside of toilets.

The incident happened about 11 a.m. inside an outhouse bathroom at Dixon Lake, Michigan State Police said Wednesday in a statement.

“The woman was heard yelling for help and told first responders she had dropped her Apple Watch in the toilet. She then lowered herself inside the toilet to retrieve it and could not get out,” state police said.

Conservation officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, troopers with the state police Gaylord Post and emergency medical personnel with Otsego County responded to the incident, state police said.

“The toilet was removed, and a strap was used to hoist the woman out to safety,” state police said.

The agency added that venturing inside an outhouse toilet is usually not a good idea and warned against it.

“If you lose an item in an outhouse toilet, do not attempt to venture inside the containment area. Serious injury may occur,” state police said.

This warning is only needed and intended for Michigan residents.

Can't really think of a better place, because that had to be what they were thinking. Imagine being in space for six month, thinking you're coming home, then being stuck there for six more!

A Year in Space

NASA astronaut Frank Rubio returned to Earth early yesterday, capping a yearlong stay aboard the International Space Station. At 371 days, Rubio's voyage is the longest single spaceflight by an American astronaut in NASA history.

Having initially launched last September, Rubio was scheduled to return in late March. Halfway through the mission, a stream of particles was observed emanating from the docked return craft. It was later determined a micrometeor—tiny space rocks traveling at average speeds of 22,000 mph—had punctured a 0.03-inch hole in the vehicle's cooling line. The incident required a replacement vessel to be sent to ISS, delaying the crew's return by six months. Rubio parachuted into Kazakhstan where he was immediately met by NASA officials, along with two Russian cosmonauts who endured the same tenure in space.

Emotional support alligator denied entrance to Phillies-Pirates game

A Phillies fan and his emotional support animal, an alligator named WallyGator, were denied entrance to watch Philadelphia host the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Social media posts showed the gator on a leash with a harness with his name on it outside the stadium Wednesday.

WallyGator is a working emotional support alligator owned by Joie Henney, of Jonestown, Pennsylvania. The reptile has a big presence on Instagram and TikTok.

Citizens Bank Park's policy on support animals is posted on the Phillies' official website. It states, "Guide dogs, service animals, or service animals in training are welcome. All other animals are prohibited."

Henney talked to CBS News last year and said his bond with Wally is "very special." Wally was found in a pond in Disney World, and since it's illegal in Florida to relocate alligators to another spot in the wild, Henney said he agreed to take him in.

Henney said he fell into a deep depression after losing some people close to him. Around the same time, Wally stepped up and became more affectionate, like he was sensing Henney's needs.

"I'd lay on the couch, and I'd wake up and he'd be laying on my head," Henney told CBS News. "And I knew it was for a long period of time because I had his whole jaw print on my face."

Henney said he started talking Wally everywhere, from the doctor's office to the drive-thru. He said his depression has improved, thanks to Wally.

"I'll get lonely and stuff like that and he seems to sense that stuff and he'll come up and he'll give me a hug," Henney said, adding that Wally "makes me feel loved."

The Phillies ended up winning on Wednesday, beating the Pirates 7-6.

Flu-Resistant Chickens

UK scientists have successfully used gene-editing technology to create chickens that have some resistance to avian flu, offering a potential solution to prevent future outbreaks.

A lethal version, H5N1, has been damaging poultry farms globally in recent years. Since February 2022, the avian flu has directly or indirectly killed over 58 million chickens and turkeys in the US, including recent outbreaks in Utah and South Dakota. As of July, 685 outbreaks have been reported globally.

The researchers used CRISPR technology to alter two amino acids in a chicken protein called ANP32A, which is critical for bird flu virus replication. They then edited chicken embryos to produce 10 chickens with the altered protein before exposing the chickens (and 10 nonedited chickens) to a virus strain—only one gene-edited chicken became infected, compared to all nonedited chickens. When subjected to a viral dose 1,000 times higher, half of the gene-edited chickens were infected but had lower virus levels in their airways.

Regulatory testing and approvals are necessary before gene-edited chickens can be considered for consumption, with an estimated timeline of about 20 years.

How can this be real? Imagine being a resident? They're fervently trying to build walls around a large geothermal power plant it efforts to save it from the imminent lava flow. Over 800 earthquakes since Friday with a 10 mile magma intrusion making it's way toward the surface.

Iceland residents evacuate town as officials warn volcanic eruption may be imminent
The residents were allowed to re-enter their homes briefly to collect basic necessities as "an eruption can be possible on a timescale of just days,” the Icelandic Met Office said Friday.

By Marlene Lenthang

Locals in an evacuated zone of Iceland were allowed to re-enter their homes to collect basic necessities Thursday and Friday as officials warn that a volcanic eruption is likely imminent and earthquakes continue to rattle parts of the country.

The Rekjnanes Peninsula in the southwest part of the country has been shaken by thousands of tremors in the past days, and seismic activity has remained “constant” since Nov. 11, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said.

The town of Grindavik, about 35 miles from the capital Reykjavik, has turned into a scene reminiscent from a doomsday film with enormous cracks breaking concrete and the walls of homes, and steam rising from deep below the Earth. The quakes forced the closure of the popular tourist attraction Blue Lagoon hot spring in Grindavik on Nov. 10.

The town, home to 3,400 residents, was evacuated Saturday.

On Thursday, one person from each family from Grindavik was allowed to return to collect basic necessities, officials said. Earlier in the week, half the town was without power, but it has since been restored RÚV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reported.

Residents of 90 properties and local business owners who have been contacted by local authorities will be allowed to enter the “danger zone” in Grindavik Friday, as well. Residents were urged to retrieve only “very important items” such as pets, vital medicines, passports and other household essentials.

“Yesterday's operations went smoothly but it takes time to allow access for everyone and this will be an ongoing process throughout the next few days,” the police commissioner in Suðurnes said in a statement.

The southwestern town of Grindavik -- home to around 4,000 people -- was evacuated in the early hours of November 11 after magma shifting under the Earth's crust caused hundreds of earthquakes in what experts warned could be a precursor to a volcanic eruption.

Overnight Wednesday, 800 earthquakes were measured, most of them at a magma dyke at Sundhnúk at a depth of 3 to 5 kilometers (1.86 to 3.10 miles), the meteorological office said. Further, deformation (meaning changes in the shape of the surface of a volcanic landscape) measurements are “consistent with magma still flowing into the dyke,” it added.

Measurements of sulfur dioxide — which is released from a volcano when magma is near the surface — are showing “fluctuating degassing due to the magma dyke, but further measurements are needed for confirmation,” officials said.

“The probability of an eruption is still considered high. In the event of an eruption, the most likely location is at the magma dyke,” at Sundhnúk, the meteorological office said Wednesday.

Around 500 earthquakes have been detected around the dyke intrusion since midnight Friday, it said.

Models show a 15 kilometer, or 9.32 mile, magma intrusion located just northwest of Grindavik and it is estimated that “the intrusion is propagating upwards slowly, with magma thought to be 800 meters (half a mile) or higher, beneath the surface."

“The likelihood of a volcanic eruption is high, and an eruption can be possible on a timescale of just days," the meteorological office said.

Iceland is one of the most active volcanic hot spots in the world, as the island is located where two tectonic plates, the Eurasian and the North American plates, are slowly moving away from each other.

The movement along these plate boundaries frequently produces earthquakes, and as the planet’s crust pulls apart, magma can rise to the surface, triggering volcanic eruptions.

There are around 30 active volcano systems in the country, according to the meteorological office.

In 2010, a series of major eruptions at the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland produced an enormous ash cloud that blanketed the area, causing extensive air travel cancellations across Europe.

Mysterious homicide investigation underway after body parts found in freezer at recently sold home

The human remains were discovered at a home in Grand Junction.

Authorities are investigating a mysterious homicide after a human head and hands were found in a freezer at a recently sold Colorado home.

The discovery was made on Jan. 12 at a residence in Grand Junction, according to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to a call for a "suspicious incident" around 2:30 p.m. local time, the sheriff's office said.

People cleaning out the property discovered what they believed to be human remains, the sheriff's office said. They were found in a freezer, a sheriff's office spokesperson said.

An autopsy conducted by the Mesa County Coroner's Office this week confirmed that the remains were a human head and hands, the sheriff's office said Thursday.

"At this time, we have no other definitive answers until further testing can be completed," the Mesa County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "These types of tests take a significant amount of time, and again, we ask for patience from the public as this investigation continues."

The sheriff's office added that it hopes to "positively identify the victim while remaining respectful of the victim and the victim's family."

A sheriff's office spokesperson told ABC News on Friday that the investigation remains active and no further information is being released at this time.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident, and that there is no threat to the community.

Woman gets probation for fatal stabbing during weed-induced psychosis

CALIFORNIA

BY RICHARD WINTON STAFF WRITER
JAN. 23, 2024 5:13 PM PT

A Thousand Oaks woman who faced the prospect of life in prison if convicted of the stabbing death of a man she was dating was sentenced Tuesday to two years’ probation and 100 hours of community service after arguing that she was on a cannabis-induced psychosis during the killing.

Authorities responded to a Thousand Oaks apartment on May 27, 2018, and found that Bryn Spejcher, 32, had stabbed Chad O’Melia, 26, dozens of times, then turned the knife on herself and her dog. She was arrested on suspicion of murder and charged with that offense.

But in an extraordinary turn of events last year, a prosecutor’s medical expert agreed with a defense expert for Spejcher that the behavior was the result of cannabis-induced psychosis, which she suffered after taking hits from the victim’s bong.

The expert conducted what prosecutors characterized as tests that showed she was not exaggerating or faking her behavior that day. Prosecutors opted to reduce the charge to involuntary manslaughter with a series of enhancements.

That decision came after psychologist Kris Mohandie, a consultant for law enforcement, examined Spejcher, her interviews with law enforcement and police body-camera footage and produced a 37-page report that concluded she had lost touch with reality due to highly potent marijuana.

After four hours of deliberation, a jury in December found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter — a charge that can carry a four-year prison sentence.

Spejcher had been dating O’Melia for a couple of weeks when she went to the apartment. Shortly after taking a second hit from a bong, Spejcher began “hearing and seeing things that weren’t there” and believing she was dead, and that she had to stab O’Melia in order to bring herself back to life, according to the district attorney’s office.

In her closing statement, Spejcher told the judge, “I wish I could go back in time and prevent this tragedy from happening.

“I wish I had known more about the dangers of marijuana,” she added. “Had I known, I would never have smoked it that night or at all.”

Her attorney Michael Goldstein lauded the ruling.

“Today, Ventura Superior Court Judge did the right thing and imposed a sentence that was fair and accurately reflected Ms. Spejcher’s conduct and recognized that it was the contents of the marijuana she was given that was the sole cause of her psychotic breakdown,” he said. “It was clear that she had no control of her faculties and never intended to cause any harm. All of the medical experts agreed, including the expert called by the district attorney’s office.”

Three Kansas City Chiefs fans found frozen to death in friend’s backyard - two days after their last sighting
An attorney for the homeowner said he ‘went to bed’ before his friends left the home — and didn’t realise their bodies were in his backyard until police showed up at his door two days later

Andrea Blanco

The remains of three Missouri men were found in a backyard after they reportedly froze to death following a visit to their friend’s home to celebrate a Kansas City Chiefs victory.

Law enforcement in Kansas City is investigating the deaths of Clayton McGeeney, 36, David Harrington, 37, and Ricky Johnson, 38, after they were found outside a home on NW 83rd Terrace. Two of the bodies were discovered in the backyard, and one was found on the back porch of the residence, two days after they were last seen.

Police said foul play is not suspected and the deaths are not being investigated as homicides, but the circumstances surrounding the fatalities remain unclear.

The three men arrived at the home of their friend, Jordan Willis, shortly after 9pm on 7 January to celebrate a game that saw the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the Las Vegas Raiders. Mr Willis reportedly went to bed and had no knowledge that his friends had died until police showed up at his door on 9 January and eventually found the remains.

Although a cause and manner of death have not been confirmed pending an autopsy, John Picerno, an attorney for Mr Willis, said the men seemingly died by hypothermia. That weekend, Kansas City saw below-freezing temperatures that reached the teens.

Mr Picerno said it was a mystery how the three bodies went undiscovered for two days.

“Jordan had absolutely nothing to do with their deaths,” Mr Picerno said in that statement to The Independent. “He does not know the timing or manner of their deaths, nor does he know how or when they exited his house. He had no knowledge that they remained in his back yard, or that they needed medical attention.”

According to Mr Picerno, Mr Willis was unaware that loved ones had been trying to locate his three missing friends. Although two cars that belonged to his friends were parked in his street, Mr Willis didn’t notice the cars because they were not parked in his driveway.

“Two people came to his house; however, he did not hear them as he sleeps with earbuds and loud fan,” Mr Picerno added. “One of those people, the wife of one of the deceased, tried to reach him via Facebook messenger, unfortunately, he did not see the message until after the police contacted him.”

*Added by me* His lawyer says he didn't know they were there and never saw the two cars still in his driveway as he was asleep on his couch for two days.

The Kansas City Police Department is investigating whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident. KCPD Captain Jake Becchina told Fox News Digital that Mr Willis had been cooperative with the investigation and he was not considered

“First and foremost, this case is 100% NOT being investigated as a homicide,” Cpt Becchina said. “There have not been any arrests [or] charges, and no one is in custody. There are no specific threats or concerns for the surrounding community at this time.”

Woman’s corpse and 30 cremated remains found after ex-funeral home owner gets evicted from house

The grisly discovery occurred Feb. 6 during a court-ordered eviction of a house rented by Miles Harford, the 33-year-old owner of Apollo Funeral and Cremation Services in the Denver suburb of Littleton, police said.

DENVER — A financially troubled former funeral home owner kept a deceased woman’s body in a hearse for two years at a house where police also found the cremated remains of at least 30 people, authorities said Friday in the latest case to underscore lax oversight of Colorado’s funeral industry.

The grisly discovery occurred Feb. 6 during a court-ordered eviction of a house rented by Miles Harford, the 33-year-old owner of Apollo Funeral and Cremation Services in the Denver suburb of Littleton, police said. It had been closed since September 2022.

“Mr. Harford appears to have experienced financial trouble in his business. At times he was not able to complete cremations to provide remains to families for services,” Denver Police Cmdr. Matt Clark said Friday. He said on occasion, Harford might have provided family members with another person’s ashes instead of the ashes of their loved ones.

Temporary urns — plastic boxes the size of a shoe box — were found in the crawl space of the house while a Denver sheriff’s deputy oversaw the removal of Harford’s belongings, Clark said. Some of the boxes were empty.

Other urns were found in a moving truck parked outside and still others were in a hearse, where investigators found the woman’s body covered with blankets, Clark said. Harford said she died in August of 2022.

The recovered cremains appear to be associated with individuals who passed away between 2012 and 2021, he said.

Authorities have been in contact with Harford and an arrest warrant was issued for him Friday. He’s believed to be in the Denver area and police were “working to facilitate his arrest,” Clark said, adding that Harford has been cooperative with investigators.

Former customer Crystallyn Nunez said it took months to get the ashes of her grandfather and father back from Harford after they died in 2021.

Repeated phone calls and texts were met with a series of excuses, she said. Harford at one point said he was in a car crash while transporting the remains, then later claimed his mother had gotten into an accident while trying to deliver them, Nunez said. When the family offered to come pick them up, Harford danced around the issue, she said.

She got her grandfather’s ashes after a few months and her father’s ashes after nearly a year, but never received necklaces containing their remains that the family had paid for, she said. Nunez said her family already had doubts that they had received the correct remains. The discovery at Harford’s house only reinforced those fears.

“It’s making our whole family question whether or not everything was done the correct way,” said Nunez. Her family has contacted police to determine if they have the correct remains.

The discovery is the latest in a string of horrific cases involving funeral home operators in Colorado, which has some of the weakest oversight of the funeral industry in the nation. The state has no routine inspections of funeral homes or qualification requirements for operators.

A married couple is awaiting trial in Colorado Springs following their arrest last year for allegedly abandoning almost 200 bodies over several years inside a bug-infested facility and giving fake ashes to family members of the deceased. The operators of another funeral home in the western Colorado city of Montrose received federal prison sentences last year for mail fraud after they were accused of selling body parts and distributing fake ashes.

More than two dozen additional criminal cases and complaints involving Colorado funeral homes since 2007 were detailed in a January report to lawmakers from state regulators. The cases included bodies being mishandled, thefts of personal effects, improper embalming of bodies, mislabeled remains and remains never returned to families. The report concluded that additional regulation for the industry was “necessary to protect the public.”

Harford is expected to be charged with abuse of a corpse, forgery of the death certificate and theft of the money paid for the cremation. Other charges are possible as the investigation continues, said Denver District Attorney Beth McCann.

No voicemail was set up on a telephone number listed for Harford. He also did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

Clark said Harford acknowledged to police that he owed money to several crematories in the area and none would cremate the 63-year-old woman’s body, so he decided to store her body in the hearse. Her family told investigators they were given what they believed were the woman’s ashes, which have been turned over to the Office of the Medical Examiner.

The family is devastated, Clark said.

“They’re shocked. They were hurt by this,” he said. “They believed that they were processing their grief with the remains that they had and had had services with that. And then they come to find out that that was not the person that was processed, and in fact, she was being held in that hearse there.”

The other cremains found on the property appear to have been professionally cremated, officials said. Investigators are checking labels on the cremains and state databases and meeting with families.

“As you can imagine, these are extremely difficult conversations to have and the information comes as a shock to many of the families, several of whom believed they had the entire remains of their loved one,” Clark said.

State licensing records show no discipline or board actions for Apollo Funeral and Cremation Services, which was licensed from March 2012 through May 2022.

In 2018, Harford and his company were sued by another funeral home company and ordered to pay about $27,000 for unspecified services the other home provided, according to court records. The same company, Kansas-based Wilbert Funeral Services, sued Harford and the company again in 2021, saying Harford owed nearly $9,000. That case is still pending.

Last year, a woman who said she was Harford’s former employer sought a court order to keep him away from her over alleged harassment. In her application, she said she had paid Harford to cremate two of her pets but he didn’t return them to her. There’s no indication in court records that the order was granted.

California Man Arrested After Allegedly Eating Leg of Person Killed by Train

Rosendo Tellez, 27, was arrested after allegedly removing human remains from a crime scene and was later seen eating the body part, according to local news and eyewitnesses.

The city of Wasco, Calif., is in shock after a disturbing incident.

A man, identified as Rosendo Tellez, 27, has been arrested after allegedly removing human remains from the city's Amtrack Station following an incident in which a pedestrian was struck by a train. Eyewitnesses at the scene, including local construction worker Jose Ibarra, alleged they saw Tellez—who residents in Wasco said is homeless—eating a human leg.

"Whatever he had in his hand, he started biting in on it and everything, and it turned out to be a person's leg," Ibarra recalled to NBC affiliate KGET. "On the video that we have, it shows clearly that he started chewing on the leg and everything."

A video posted to social media showed Tellez bent over what seemed to be a leg before he waved it around as police cars were parked in the area.

Tellez was arrested on March 22 on one misdemeanor count of "removal of human remains from other than a cemetery," one misdemeanor count of possession of controlled substance paraphernalia and one felony offense of "revocation of felony probation," according to records from Kern County Sheriff's Office obtained by E! News.

Police arrived at the scene of the fatal train collision that killed the unidentified victim around 8 a.m. March 22, KGET reported. That same day, Tellez was arrested.

E! News has reached out to the Kern County District Attorney's office but has not heard back and has been unable to locate Tellez's legal representation.

Does it make me a bad person to have a deep affection for this story?

As a Romero fan and the genre in general, I believe there is nothing terribly surprising here.

Is this the wave of the future, or are we in the end times?

Maybe not a bad person but at least twisted to some degree.

The only part that's surprising part is that Romero movies are fictional and you seem to be comparing that to something that's real.

Most likely neither. Preachers have been saying it's the end of times for well over a century, maybe longer and it has not come to fruition yet. Combine that with the fact that there have been cases of cannibalism reported since what seems like forever.
