Ugh.

My dog decided that he should chase something ..... and for the 1st time ever managed somehow to get around or over the barricade I have between my garage and my neighbor's fence. I heard him yip, and then I went around to find him in my neighbor's front yard. He turned, and I saw this huge red streak down his side.

He manages to somehow rip his side open, to the tune of almost 12 " long. Of course my vet wasn't in today, (and he usually is in on Saturdays) so I had to take him to the emergency vet ...... and $1100 and 5 hours later, we're home.

The dog is sleeping now, so that's good.

May not seem like it, but consider yourself lucky - and the dog.

My son's 2 dogs somehow opened 2 - TWO - bottles of vitamin D. A total of 500 pills. He found exactly 2 pills. They had eaten all the rest. Emergency vet bill? $4,000.

And my daughters dog ate some clothing. Emergency vet bill? (they basically sliced him open, opened his stomach, pulled out the issue) $4600. Now, she had pet insurance on him, and the deductible is $1000. But yeah, dogs can be expensive.

Not trying come across as $1,1000 being a minimal bill - it isn't.

Damn. Sorry bro.

My brother-in-law thought his dog ate some gum. Something about some kind of sweetener toxic to dogs, wrappers on the floor, better be safe than sorry.

Vet bill = $2000+ ... and he didn't even eat the gum. 😲

So, Dobby is doing pretty well. He has about 100 stitches in his side, and has to wear a cone, (which he hates) and he has a drain in his side that is a real mess, but he is doing pretty well.

He got checked by my vet today, and is healing nicely. That visit cost me only $57. wink

Glad to hear he is doing well.

I just realized that this is in the wrong forum. Oh well.

Dobby's side got fairly badly infected, and his stitches pulled out. My vet had to clean his wound out really well, and clean out the necrotic tissue, and sew him back up again. He is on 3 different antibiotics until the tissue results come back, and we know what the best antibiotic for him is. crazy

Congratulate Dobby, though .... he has become the most expensive dop I have ever had, and I have only had him a little over 4 years.

I hope he heels up well. Sorry to hear about the infection. Sorry about the price tag as well. I think those who are not pet owners have no idea of the costs and responsibility that goes into owning a pet. Nor the emotional investment you have with considering them as another member of the family.

We're considering pet insurance for our current dog. Haven't pulled the trigger yet. Maybe the next time our homeowner's policy comes up for review.

If Dawgs remember, my Rottweiler Bella needed two spinal operations to prevent paralysis in her hindquarters. 5 figures both times. I'll never complain about the money, it was worth it for privilege of being custodian to such an amazing personality.

Pets are a true life commitment.
If you aren't all-in for those you've chosen to place in your care, you shouldn't have them in your life.

Just saw this thread

Dogs and/or pets truly are family. Over the last 35-ish+ years my blushing bride and I have had 4
miniature schnauzers.

How's your pooch doing now?

He's OK. I don't see any signs of infection in his wound area, so that's good. (knock on wood) He's still leaking a bit from his drain. He got up on my bed, and a few minutes later, I felt something disgustingly damp on my shirt, and his drain leaked a bit onto my shirt. Ah the joys of having a dog. crazy lol He's got all of his strength back, though.

Glad to hear that the infection looks to be gone!
