Im thinking of updating my old camera for a DSLR.

Been doing alot of research on line and im interested in a Nikon D90 or Canon Rebel XSI EOS 450D.

Was wondering if anyone on here could give me some insight about these two or others they have information on.

I don't think you can go wrong with either...I really like the Nikon's

But a really good site that helps me is
www.dpreview.com

They are both quality cameras....it just depends on your preference and which lenses you already own. Personally, I started with Canon film equipment and stuck with Canon digital because the lenses were interchangeable. I have friends that have done the same with Nikon....and we're all happy.

Get a copy of the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. It's one of the best photography books ever written, it's an easy read and it will get you out of the idiot modes to really get the most from your camera.

Here's a link to some of my pics taken with an older model of the Canon you're looking at:

Wow those are some great pic's and i love the captions with some of them.

How long have you been into photography?

Thanks. I've been a serious hobbyist for about 20 years. I plan on making it a profession after I retire from my current job. Again, I can't recommend that book enough....my skills really took off after studying it. If you have any other questions, let me know. I love talking photography.

Thank's i will look into that book. And im sure i will take advantage of your offering to answer any questions.

Which one is better comes down to the bells and whistles each one offers. See which features matter and which ones don't. If you are just looking for an entry level camera to get into DSLR world either would be fine. Steve's digicams is another site with good camera reviews. I got a Canon 40d last summer and love it.

In addition to Understanding Exposure, I'd also recommend The Digital Photography Book volume 1 and 2(I heard volume 3 is on the way) by Scott Kelby.

Hey otowndaeg,
I own the Nikon D90 and used the Nikon D40 for about 3 years. I really like the camera. It will give you quality photos and with more features than the average photographer will need.
The LIVE view is ok. It doesn't autofocus and it is best if you use a tripod.

You can see pictures I took with both cameras at www.behrArt.com or www.istockphoto.com/yogibehr

The site www.dpreview.com is good reference tool with real comparisons. Another site is www.kenrockwell.com he gives honest opinions on equipment.

Good luck in your choice.

Those are both great sites listed, another camera to consider is the Olympus E-520. There are advantages and disadvantages in all choices to be sure and this one features image shake built into the camera instead of the lens. The advantage here is when you upgrade to better lenses than the kit lenses, you're out of pocket is going to be greatly reduced. We're talking $1000's greatly reduced and Olympus makes some of the best glass out there.

Thank's everyone for all the information you provided.

And Yogi some great pic's on your site.

I used Nikons exclusively in another life, so they're all I could comment on. I'm not an expert on cameras but Nikons are very tough and very reliable... I know that much.
