Maybe this has already been asked in the past, sorry if it has,but I have to ask. What do people think of the Droid. I've had mine for about 3 wks and it's hands down the best phone I have ever had. Posting from it now.

I'm considering upgrading to one....interested to hear the replies.
Posted By: atomic_dog Re: Droid - 04/05/10 03:27 PM
My friend at work is switching carriers as soon as she can so that she can get the Droid. A couple of the guys I work with have them and absolutely LOVE it.

I just got the Sanyo Incognito, man am I loving this phone. It has more bells and whistles than any phone I've ever owned and best part is 3g and has a data package that kicks butt.
Posted By: Damanshot Re: Droid - 04/05/10 03:32 PM
Have a friend and his wife both have them.. he likes his, she just got hers Saturday so she doesn't know yet.,..,
Posted By: Ammo Re: Droid - 04/05/10 03:57 PM
I'm strongly considering the Nexus One if the next iPhone doesn't come to Verizon.

The Nexus One is basically a faster Droid, minus the keyboard (which is tough to use anyway, I've tried it).

I'm beginning to need a smartphone for work purposes. The enV3 can only do so much.
Posted By: Browns Lifer Re: Droid - 04/05/10 03:57 PM
I don't have one, but a couple of my friends have them and they like them. One guy has had some problems with running a number of apps (something to do with the OS version or something like that). Other than that, I haven't heard any complaints from them.
Posted By: FloridaFan Re: Droid - 04/05/10 04:36 PM
I have one and it is hands down the best smart phone I've had yet. I never had an iPhone but have messed with my friends, and say the Droid or any phone with the android OS is as close to an iPhone you can get without being an iPhone, and it will only get better with each update.

I just got patched the 2.1 update this morning and the new features are great, many I had through third party apps alreayd, but it's nice to have them on the default apps now.

Since I got mine 4 other people in our office got one as well, and all love it as well, some were on blackberry's before, 1 on a Palm Centro.

The keyboard is a little small, and I've gotten where I use the horizontal screen keyboard more often now. Even with the keyboard on screen theres still enough room above to see whats going on with the nice large screen, my previous phone only had room for 1 line which sucked.
Posted By: Moxdawg Re: Droid - 04/05/10 04:39 PM
I'm not sure it's faster anymore. I just got the over the air update to the 2.1 OS sat. This is what the nexus is suppose to be running.
But anyhow there is nothing this phone can not do. I did read in the paper last week that the iPhone was coming to Verizon probably in summer if apple and Verizon can come to terms. I also was waiting on iPhone, but read up on the Droid before buying and decided that I would like it better anyhow.
The only thing I wish is they would give u the option to upgrade to the 32gb memory card at the time of purchase. It comes with a 16gb. The only way to get the 33gb is online or a few select stores. Pretty sure the price of the card will be almost the cost of what a laid down for the phone, and I'm to tight to spend that much on an accessory
Posted By: YepTheBrownsRule Re: Droid - 04/05/10 05:36 PM
I have an HTC Hero from sprint and love it (Android OS). I have mine configured that I can watch movies and TV (including live TV) from my PC at home and it works well. I got stuck in traffic for an hour+ a couple weekends ago and was able to WATCH the OSU game as I sat there in park on the freeway. Pretty sweet...
Posted By: DawgMichelle Re: Droid - 04/05/10 05:39 PM
That's the phone I was thinking about until I talked to Sprint this morning. Looks like I'll have to switch carriers unless I want to spend $200 a month for two phones.
Posted By: YepTheBrownsRule Re: Droid - 04/05/10 05:45 PM
I have their 70 plan with unlimited data, text and mobile calling... 2 phones was 130. Not sure what you were looking at?
Posted By: DawgMichelle Re: Droid - 04/05/10 05:47 PM
Well, in order to stay with Sprint and not have roaming charges, I have to go with their Simply Everything plan. Jules is roaming right now for work and we need something with coverage in her area (not Sprint) or included roaming.
Posted By: Moxdawg Re: Droid - 04/05/10 06:31 PM
What app do u have that u can watch live TV. I haven't found that yet
Posted By: columbusdawg Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:16 PM
Hands down the best phone I've had. I bought mine in December and love it.

The feature that I was most impressed with thus far is the contact management of my Gmail and Outlook contacts. It merges them on the phone into a single record, but the detail is kept separate. The only downside is that the name sort is only by first name which is kinda clunky IMO. Outlook e-mail and Gmail are also "push" and it works excellent. Exchange integration is a breeze to setup as well.

I wish Verizon would open it up to allow browsing and phone conversations at the same time - that is the only thing the iPhone has and the Droid does not. Has anyone heard if Verizon will allow simultaneous internet and phone calls on the iPhone if they come to terms? I've got to believe the Android OS crowd will scream if they allow iPhone's this capability and they do not open it up to the Andrdoid OS.

That being said, the one thing that the Droid destroys the iPhone with is multitasking. In typical Apple fashion, they only allow their software to multitask; third party developers need not apply for this functionality - the Droid can have as many apps that will fit into memory open. This one feature, IMO, makes Droid > iPhone.

I'm very interested in the new Windows phone coming out as well. From what I have seen and read it looks absolutely great. All development is done using Silverlight and they are basically giving the .NET IDE away to allow for development of applications for this phone. I've played around with the development portion of .NET and it is pretty nice. For those that haven't seen it, it is worth doing some searches. With the Andriod OS and the Windows phone, both of which are not locked into using one device like the iPhone, I see some very serious competition and a lot of market share taken away from Apple in the smart phone market over the next couple of years.
Posted By: KashDawg Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:24 PM
My wife and I have Blackberries with unlimited data, web, roaming and 1400 minutes for 129.99/month through Sprint. If you get the everything data plan roaming is free. Unless they changed it? I constantly roam since I commute on the train to work and have never been charged extra.
Posted By: DawgMichelle Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:33 PM
The way I understood it this morning, the Everything Data plan uses your anytime minutes for roaming...both voice and data.
Posted By: FloridaFan Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:37 PM
The other downside I found with droid is currently you can only put apps in internal memory, and not on the SDCard. Major fopaw on googles end, I hope they intend to correct this.

Oh, and lock of flash video support so far, though that is supposed to be coming.

PS - I got the 2.1 update this morning, my phone is running quicker and smoother than previously, and like the new features.
Posted By: KashDawg Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:42 PM
So I did a little research for you...

Roaming is free if you have the everything data plan (2 phones 129.99). If the BULK of your minutes are used for roaming they reserve the right to drop you. Any minutes used while roaming will be deducted from your monthly minutes (if between 7pm-7am M-F or weekend then it is free however)
Posted By: KashDawg Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:44 PM
Sorry I just caught a bit of that post that I missed...

From what I understand and what I see on my bill, data while roaming does not use your minutes, however it is slower and may not maintain the same functionality since it is connected to another network. FRor example, you may not get voicemail notification until you are back on Sprints network.
Posted By: DawgMichelle Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:50 PM
Right...thanks. I thought I said roaming uses your anytime minutes?? And, at this point, 100% of her phone usage would be roaming. So, it's not free, even with the plan.

Ah, well.

Posted By: KashDawg Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:53 PM
You did, my apologies. I also was just clarifying that data does not use your anytime minutes.

She will be 100% roaming, but will you? If as an account at least 50% of your usage is on the Sprint network, you should be ok.
Posted By: DawgMichelle Re: Droid - 04/05/10 07:57 PM
Well, I suppose I could watch usage and just call my home phone and leave it on the hook all night while I sleep if I need to gain minutes.

Of course, what I was told by three customer service people this morning was roaming counts against your anytime minutes...period. I don't know what the heck to believe.

I just found this in their terms and conditions: Mobile-to-Mobile:Only available for calls directly between Sprint phones and/or most Nextel phones (not through Voicemail, 411 or other indirect methods). Not available where a Sprint phone is roaming.

Yes I agree, and I hope they fix it. At least we can actually upgrade our SD card if we want to as well, unlike the iPhone

Quote:

That is coming - it is never coming to the iPhone from what I understand. I can't believe that Apple will remain with that stance, but they are the kings of controlling what goes on their devices and somehow brainwash people into thinking that it is great.

My officemate next to me got the OTA 2.1 update, and I couldn't wait so did it manually then and there

Love the new gallery and how contact shortcuts work now, plus voice to text is awesome. Also upgraded my fiance's Eris to 2.1, I had to root it but 2.1 helped a ton on her phone. I must say the feature of HTC Sense I wish the droid had was if you push your fingers apart like your zooming out you can view all 5 panels in a star view, then click the one you want, rather than scroll over to it.

I'm with Verizon and thinking about grabbing a blackberry through Sprint..

1) How is Sprint's coverage?
2) Going on a cruise in may.. Will I be able to use my phone without paying extra charges? (going to the everything data plan)
Posted By: DawgMichelle Re: Droid - 04/06/10 01:30 PM
According to the Sprint representatives I spoke with yesterday, any minutes used while roaming count against your anytime minutes. Double check with them and let me know if you find out something different!

We got an HTC in at work...........OMFG the screen on that thing is HUGE. We have all been playing with it to see what it's like and it's unreal.

Chelle, the more you mess around with that phone the more you are going to like it. Go shopping and if you see something you want, use the barscan app to find out where the BEST price is before you buy. One of the guys at work has the droid and was messing around with the barcode app and we found the best place to buy memory cards for cameras and it was online for around 4 bucks for a 2 gig card. It's awesome.

Agreed... If you're in a market that has WiMax. Sadly Cinci, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are all supposed to have it by the end of the year, but not Columbus.

Michelle~I've been with Verizon over 10 years and wouldn't consider anyone else. They seem to have the best coverage wherever I've travelled.
Posted By: HotBYoungTurk Re: Droid - 04/07/10 09:22 PM
how do u know though? You have been with only one company for over 10 years..
Posted By: BrownsBabe Re: Droid - 04/07/10 09:28 PM
Feedback from friends with different carriers. They've all switched or are currently switching to Verizon for the same reason.
Posted By: FloridaFan Re: Droid - 04/08/10 02:20 AM
Our company changed carriers yearly for several years, we had AllTel, AT&T, Sprint and now Verizon.

So far Verizon has been the best as far as signals and billing(and in a company situation, that is important)

But I believe different regions have different results, which I attribute to who actually owns those towers. They all lease tower space from whoever is local. Around here, Verizon owns over 90% of the towers.

Posted By: BpG Re: Droid - 04/08/10 03:24 PM
I think that I am going to go with Sprint today.

I am going to look at the Moment or the HTC touch pro 2.

Verizon with all the data and everything is like $100 a month and Sprint would be like $60.

I really like the droid, but $30 or $40 a month seems like a rip off. I prefer Verizons service, but dayum, $30 a month more? Really?

Any suggestions?
Posted By: AndraDavis4MVP Re: Droid - 04/08/10 03:30 PM

I know that the service is not better than Verizon. I love Verizon and I prefer them.

My favorite phones are:
1. Iphone
2. Droid
3. HTC touch pro 2

So as you can see I prefer the phones from At&T and Verizon first. Problem is I hate AT&T with a passion, they suck and they are $40 more expensive, so they are out.

Then comes Verizon, love the service, prefer them and love the droid, but WITH my 23% discount it;s $95 a month...ridiculous. That comes with only free minutes to VERIZON, no other carriers. Finally sprint, with my discount like $65 a month, free calling to ANY mobile phone (family has AT&T, work is Verizon, freinds have Tmobile) and I like their phones.

I have a Verizon work phone and I love it, but man I just cannot justify an extra $30 a month because I like the droid a *little* bit more than the Sprint phone. I was just wondering how other people justify going with Verizon and not sprint....Location? Service?

Thank GM, I prefer keyboards and touch. I hate all touch. I think I am going to go at lunch here and get it.

Plus Sprint has the "try it free for 30 days" thing and if I don't like it I can return it.
Posted By: AndraDavis4MVP Re: Droid - 04/08/10 03:39 PM
Yeah man I feel you, I am on AT&T and and rightly agitated at their $20 a month fee for unlimited txting when every other carrier is $5. AT&T's service has greatly improved for me over the last year and they are reporting spending more on updating their network than any other network. I honestly dont know much about Sprint's network or service as everyone I know has AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile (Which I hear is atrocious). $30 a month extra bc you like a phone more is a bit much.
Posted By: BpG Re: Droid - 04/08/10 03:45 PM
Yeah, it's just hard to justify. So off to sprint I am going.
Posted By: DawgMichelle Re: Droid - 04/08/10 03:48 PM

Well, after talking extensively with both Sprint and Verizon, I've decided to stay with Sprint. Basically, the same services are $50 a month less expensive through Sprint. The only thing that could possibly happen to make up the difference is going over in minutes...but you can buy bundles of 100 minutes for $5 if you need them.

I've always heard that Sprint has the best priced plans, and I agree. I'm going to return my 30 day trial phone from Verizon today to avoid losing my "activation" fee and head on over to Sprint.

I'll look at the Hero and something with an actual keyboard.

Let me know what you think of the phones today, BpG!

With orb I can also pull up any movie and recorded TV show on my PC.

The only drawback I heard on the HTC was battery life between charges, but I only have to charge mine every other night.
Posted By: BpG Re: Droid - 04/08/10 06:43 PM
So after all the thought I put into my phone decision I went with the Google "Moment" from sprint. Unlimited Data, text and calls for $62/ month with my discount. I just flat liked the keypad better than the HTC pro touch 2. The HTC pro touch 2 was nice and all, but it would have cost my like $400 out of pocket and the difference between the two was negligible. The only REAL difference was for international travel (which I do not).

The girl told me the more expensive one was slower, but that it had some more features, which I wouldn't use.

Here it is.

I ended up going with the Blackberry Curve. I was really looking at the Tour and the Moment that you got. But I was also buying for my wife as well...and we got both phones(both Curves) for $49...I don't have the Camera Flash or the international access of the Tour(which I was leaning towards most) but my processor is faster than the tour and frankly I couldn't be happier...I love the phone. definitely worth the $$$ I saved over getting the Moment or Tour and a Curve or different phone for my wife....

I have been with Sprint for a while. and I know some have complaints about their customer service(In Person I have never had an issue...) But I haven't had any complaints about their coverage or the performance of their phones...And I love the extras with the Everything package...like Sprint TV(although I hate that NFL Network backed out ), Sprint Navigation, Pandora, Sprint Football Live, not to mention the Blackberry apps all services can download...Very Happy with the Sprint Package...So much so that I just have to laugh at the mini commercial war between Verizon and AT&T on TV...lol

Yeah that phone looks like a game changer....It will probably be the hallmark phone for Sprint similar to the iPhone for AT&T and the Droid with Verizon. Who knows if it puts them up into that competition with them though...but 4G speeds...the phone is going to rock...

At least you don't pay for roaming with Sprint. The only times you do (and you really just use minutes) is when making an actual phone call while roaming or calling a land line during 7a-7p while in-network. Data and text are free all the time.
