SAN FRANCISCO - A tiger that mauled a zookeeper last year escaped from its pen at the San Francisco Zoo on Tuesday, killing one man and injuring two others before police shot it dead, authorities said.

The three men were in their 20s; they were together and were not zoo employees, San Francisco Police spokesman Steve Mannina said. They were attacked just after the 5 p.m. closing time, on the east end of the 125-acre grounds.

They suffered "pretty aggressive bite marks," Mannina said.

It was unclear how the tiger escaped or how long it was on the loose. The approximately 300-pound female Siberian tiger, named Tatiana, attacked a zookeeper last December during a public feeding, according to the zoo's director of animal care and conservation.

Robert Jenkins, the zoo's director of animal care and conservation, could not explain how the animal escaped. The tiger's enclosure is surrounded by a 15-foot-wide moat, and 20-foot-high walls.

"There was no way out through the door," Jenkins said. "The animal appears to have climbed or otherwise leapt out of the enclosure."

The zoo, which is open 365 days a year, was evacuated immediately after the attack was reported.

The two injured men were in critical but stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital, Fire Department spokesman Lt. Ken Smith said. A call to the supervising nurse at San Francisco General was not immediately returned.

'Tragic event for San Francisco'
"This is a tragic event for San Francisco," Smith said. "We pride ourselves in our zoo, and we pride ourselves in tourists coming and looking at our city."

Authorities did not believe there were any other people attacked, but because it was dark they could not be certain. Investigators, using ladders and flashlights, remained on the scene. Smith said a thorough sweep of the grounds would be conducted in the morning.

Investigators working to understand what happened have sketched a chilling picture.

The first attack happened right outside the Siberian's enclosure — the victim died on the scene. A group of four officers, responding to an emergency call, came across his body when they made their way into the dark zoo grounds, Mannina said. It was immediately unclear who had placed the call.

Then they saw the second victim about 300 yards away, in front of the Terrace Cafe.

The man was sitting on the ground, blood running from gashes in his head. Tatiana sat next to him. Suddenly, the cat attacked the man again, Mannina said.

The officers started approaching the animal, bearing their handguns. Tatiana started moving in their direction. Several of the officers then fired, killing the animal.

Only then did they see the third victim, who also had been mauled.

Although no new visitors were let in after 5 p.m. the grounds were not scheduled to close until an hour later, and there were between 20 and 25 people still on site when the attacks happened, zoo officials said.

Zoo blamed for previous attack
There are five tigers at the zoo — three Sumatrans, and two Siberians. Officials initially worried that four tigers had escaped, but they soon learned that only one had left its pen, according to Mannina.

In December 2006, the animal reached through the cage's iron bars and badly lacerated a zookeeper's arm. The zoo's Lion House was temporarily closed during an investigation.

California's Division of Occupation Safety and Health blamed the zoo for the assault and imposed a US$18,000 penalty, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom said in a statement that he was deeply saddened by the latest incident, and said a thorough investigation was under way.

Following last year's attack, the zoo added customized steel mesh over the bars, built in a feeding shoot and increased the distance between the public and the cats.

Tatiana arrived at the San Francisco Zoo from the Denver Zoo a few years ago, with zoo officials hoping she would mate with a male tiger.

The zoo will be closed on Wednesday.

Ya think!?! I would hope it's closed until they know how the cat got out and that escape route is closed. But, hey, that's just me.
The tiger was only doing what it knew how to do....hunt and kill. I feel sorry for the victims, but I feel more sorry for the tiger.

Good point.

I feel for the innocent humans attacked by this beast. The only way I'm going to place animal life over human life is when the human life is the likes of Mike Vick.

Well, it's terrible for everyone, the person who was killed didn't do anything to deserve it. It must have been awful to witness that scene.
Not to mention that's got to be a horribly painful way to die.
And that's fine. I'm sure I'll be in the minority on my feelings about this, but that's okay, too. Humans are very strange...we keep WILD, untamed animals in little enclosures and break their spirit, then when they kill someone we get all ticked off. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Clearly this tiger wasn't safe...she had hurt someone last year. Then the question is, how did she get out? Jump 15 or 20 feet? I doubt that's impossible. Little housecats can jump 8' sometimes. Perhaps the zoo needs to look at the height of their walls if they intend to keep this breed of tiger again.
Been hearing how easy it is for people to buy these big cats to have as pets...I don`t understand why any one would want to do this....Once these cats have matured most of them have to be taken to a refugee...

I have mixed feelings on zoos...In a way they teach people on the life of the wild animals....But then so does animal planet...

Maybe people should not mess with nature in that sense....If the animals are left in there natural enviroment...than situations like this would`nt occur ...

Saving a animal in certain situations are okay with me..But just taking them out of the wild is not.....People will always hunt and poach....And saving an animal from extingshen (sp) is probly a good thing.....
I also have mixed feelings about zoos. I would feel better if I knew the animals had been rescued because they were sick or injured...but like you, just to stick them in a pen....don't like it.
Posted By: Tulsa Re: Tiger escapes from SF Zoo, Kills 1 man - 12/26/07 04:18 PM
Well I'm certainly no fan of zoo's. People can get a good hi-def tv and watch an animal documentary and get a better view of the animal in it's habitat and learn more than they ever will in a zoo environment. To see these animals caged merely so we can walk by and gawk at it brings me no joy.

Yes, this is all the zoo's fault. The animal obviously had history of this type of behavior and should have been taken back to the wild if it was capable of living out it's life that way or destroyed if not. Obviously we won't know how the animal got out until the zoo releases that information and you can bet litigation is going to come out of this unfortunate event. I doubt the zoo is going to give out any culpable information until that litigation has been completed.
jc..

FYI - most zoos now, get their animals from zoo animal births, animals born in captivity and raised by people. Releasing these animals is no longer an option, they often would be killed by their species as intruders.

It is sad for the animals in many ways, but it also can be good for them, they are basically hand fed, never have to hunt, and wont starve, freeze, be hunted. There are positives an negatives to be a zoo animal.

If we must have zoos, I would prefer a Disney Animal Kingdom setup, rather than a small pen that the animal just circles for hours on end.

I agree. There are awesome zoos like the ones in Columbus and San Diego, but I've also been to horrible ones that just depress the heck out of you.

I think if they still have zoos, they should be able to give tours of prisons and let the visitors throw food to them.

And w/ this new situation, it's just awful for the dead & injured. Human and animal.

When I first read of this, I immediately thought of Chris Rock's stand-up routine on the tiger attacking Siegfried & Roy (Can't remember which one was attacked or how to spell either's name) in Vegas. He said people acted like the tiger went crazy when it attacked. But no, it was really just acting like a tiger. He said the tiger REALLY went crazy when it agreed to ride on a unicycle and wear a funny hat.

Going to a zoo always depressed me . Seeing the look in the animals eyes made you realize that they had no spirit. This summer my family and I went to The Wilds and that is the only way I like to see animals. We were in a bus driving through in a safari like atmosphere where we were the ones being watched and the animals were free to roam about . Huge place and I never knew how much they did for the animals. Cool place to check out.

That was my thought from the beginning.....That was`nt a bionic tiger....The only way a tiger could leap 20 + feet...is if it had gas like GM.....

They said something on a FOX report on the radio that someone believed these guys were taunting the tiger. I don't know how true that is. The story gets stranger.

If these stories are true.. taunting the tiger then "aiding" his escape are true.. then whoever did that is definitely a Darwin Award winner..

One would think only a zoo employee would have the necessary access and possibly knowledge to let the animal out. Seemingly only putting their life also at risk of attack once the animal was freed. If the people who were attacked were less than innocent bystanders in all this, I'm not going to have much sympathy for them and the outcome.

It's going to be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Report: Killer tiger may have been taunted
Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:45 AM

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Police are reportedly investigating whether one or more of the young men mauled by a tiger at the San Francisco Zoo may have taunted the animal before its deadly rampage, a possibility the father of one of the victims said Thursday he hoped wasn't true.

"I don't think my son would do something like taunt animals," Carlos Sousa told ABC's "Good Morning America." "It's unbelievable, but only the evidence can prove that. And right now I can't say much."

His son, Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, was one of three men attacked by a Siberian tiger around closing time on Christmas. Police shot the 300-pound animal to death after it killed Sousa and severely mauled two brothers who also were visiting the zoo.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, police found a shoe and blood in an area between the gate and the edge of the animal's 25- to 30-foot-wide moat, prompting the possibility that one of the victims dangled a leg or other body part over the edge of the moat.

Police on Thursday could not confirm the Chronicle's report to The Associated Press.

"I don't think this deserves to happen to anybody - taunting or not taunting," Carlos Sousa told ABC. "Animals should be protected from the people and the people should be protected from the animals."

Police Chief Heather Fong said Wednesday the department opened a criminal investigation to "determine if there was human involvement in the tiger getting out or if the tiger was able to get out on its own."

The zoo was to remain closed Thursday.

One zoo official insisted the tiger did not get out through an open door and must have climbed or leaped out. But Jack Hanna, former director of the Columbus Zoo, said such a leap would be an unbelievable feat and "virtually impossible."

Instead, he speculated that visitors could have been fooling around and might have taunted the animal and perhaps even helped it get out by, say, putting a board in the moat.

Ron Magill, a spokesman at the Miami Metro Zoo, said it was unlikely a zoo tiger could make such a leap, even with a running start.

"Captive tigers aren't nearly in the kind of shape that wild tigers have to be in to survive," he said. He said taunting can definitely make an animal more aggressive, but "whether it makes it more likely to get out of an exhibit is purely speculative."

The same tiger, a 4-year-old female named Tatiana, ripped the flesh off a zookeeper's arm just before Christmas a year ago while the woman was feeding the animal through the bars. A state investigation faulted the zoo, which installed better equipment at the Lion House, where the big cats are kept.

Zoo director Manuel Mollinedo said Wednesday he gave no thought to destroying Tatiana after the 2006 incident, because "the tiger was acting as a normal tiger does." As for whether Tatiana showed any warning signs before Tuesday's attack, Mollinedo said: "She seemed to be very well-adjusted into that exhibit."

It was unclear how long the tiger had been loose before it was killed. The three visitors were attacked around closing time Tuesday on the 125-acre zoo grounds. Four officers hunted down and shot the animal after police got a 911 call from a zoo employee.

The zoo has a response team that can shoot animals. But zoo officials and police described the initial moments after the escape as chaotic.

The first attack happened right outside the tiger's enclosure - Sousa died at the scene. Another was about 300 yards away, in front of the zoo cafe. The police chief said the animal was mauling one of the survivors, and when officers yelled at it to stop, it turned toward them and they opened fire.

Only then did they see the third victim, police said.

The two injured men, 19- and 23-year-old brothers from San Jose, were in stable condition Wednesday at San Francisco General Hospital. They suffered deep bites and claw wounds on their heads, necks, arms and hands, said Dr. Rochelle Dicker, a surgeon. She said they were expected to recover fully.

Sousa's parents told the AP they didn't know why their son went to the zoo Tuesday, but it should have been a fun Christmas Day activity.

"It's not a safe place for kids," said his mother, Marilza Sousa. "People go there to have a good time, not to get killed."

I need to see a picture of this area...How is it possible to dangle over this area ?...One of the victims ?....Do I take the other 2 ran 300 yds before the Tiger caught up with them ?

Did he go alone ?...Were the other 2 friends of his......or could it be that a friend of his took off ?

That's rediculous. While the shooting of the tiger is regretable, the death of a person is tragic.
Maybe...depends on whether the guys were taunting her.

Here is an E-mail that was read on a local radio station here. It was funny in a morbid kind of way, but if you look at it, you will know where the author was going. Also, the remarks the police officer made to the Tiger CAN be googled too.. . I couldn't believe it myself...

I have no problem with zoos whatsoever....most of the time, major zoos do their best to duplicate the animals' natural environment, they are fed well, treated well, and attended to when sick and injured...I think if the animals could talk, they wouldn't have any complaints.

What I REALLY hate is the circus. Normally, I despise PETA and the dirty tactics that they use, but when they go after a circus, I'm all for it....
Did that guy go to journalist school, his thoughts are all over the place and he basically just tossed in lines from other articles that have been printed on this in random order and printed it.

From the sounds of the reports now it looks like the zoo is totally at fault with a wall that was too short, and what someone reported as taunting was the guy that was killed trying to distract the tiger who was going after his friend. Sad story.
I think we should teach Tiger wrestling in school, just in case you are ever in a situation where you face a tiger.

When I went to the zoo`s site and saw a picture of young kids leaning on the railing....My first thoughts were....thats a little short.....

No... Just your average run of the mill E-mailer making a sort of "political/social comment" about how society views different issues to include crime, race, etc.. . What I thought was even more interesting was the remarks about sensitivity training for the Tiger and where were Sharpton and Jackson to protest the shooting just to say it was the victim's fault.. ..Go figure. ..I still think the best line was the cops yelling to the tiger to "stop".....
What else do you yell at a tiger mauling someone when you want to get it's attention?

Young Man Killed by Tiger Was Quiet One, Witness Says
By Mike Nizza

Tags: california, violence, wildlife, zoos

One of the new signs posted at the San Francisco Zoo, which reopened today after a tiger attack on Christmas Day. (Photo: David Paul Morris/Getty Images)Did a group of young men taunt a Siberian tiger before it escaped from its enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day and attacked them?
A witness to the incident added weight to that claim in an interview today in The San Francisco Chronicle, saying that the young men “were roaring at” the zoo’s lions and acting “boisterous” for the four to five minutes when she was watching.
But the witness, Jennifer Miller, apparently did not add anything to the suspicions being investigated by police that a large rock, a tree branch and other items were thrown into another exhibit area holding the 350-pound tiger.
If the police conclude that a crime was committed, it would be a misdemeanor.
Lawyers for the men flatly denied that there had been teasing of any kind, and a police official pointed out that Ms. Miller’s account could amount to “what kindergartners do at the zoo every day,” The Chronicle reported.
“The lion was bristling, so I just said, ‘Come on, let’s get out of here.’ ” Ms. Miller said. “My kids were disturbed by it.”
The tiger’s rampage began minutes later, and didn’t end until two of the young men were hurt, and another, Carlos Sousa Jr., was killed. According to Ms. Miller, Mr. Sousa was the only one in the group that did not participate in the rough-housing:
“He wasn’t roaring. He wasn’t taunting them,” she recalled. “He kept looking at me apologetically like, ‘I’m sorry, I know we are being stupid.’ “
Of course, no one deserves to be mauled, not even a taunting teenager. But Mr. Sousa’s death seemed especially tragic. The zoo reopened today with new signs posted, evidently inspired by a 17-year-old who died while following the rules:
PLEASE don’t tap on glass, throw anything into exhibits, make excessive noise, tease or call out to them.”

Seems odd that the tiger only hurt the 3 people that were screwing with it. I guess that should be a lesson to all. LEAVE THE BADASS TIGER ALONE.
