I think there is a pretty good chance this pick is traded.

You see a lot of trade rumors before every draft. But the closer to the draft a prediction is and more sources reporting the same thing within just hours before the draft begins gives it far more a sense of validity.

If I am running the Texans and decide to pass on a Qb at, my plan wound be to draft a Qb in round 1 next year. So I trade this pick for that king's ransom.
Really load up in round 1 next year to guarantee that I have a top pick. Between the Texans pick and whoever they trade with (Indy?, Atl?) there is a very good hance you enfd up with a top 2 pick, if not the #1 itself. Picking at 4 or 7 would not (in my mind) be a significant talent difference in this draft.

The alternative would be making a run at Lamar after the draft so that you aren't giving up that#2 overall pick.

Yes, but he returned the $100 they stuck in his playbook, and told them to give it to him after he won them a Super Bowl.

or compared to Rosell or Tagliabue, or for how he harms the game with unneeded changes.
Other than that, I love Roger Goodell.

I really don't understand how/why Young went 1st.

When he throws, the bottom half of his body just doesn't go with the top half.

Plus, He's short, he's skinny, he has smaller than-average hands and a weaker-than-average arm, and processes information slower than average.

No doubt a good player.

We picked up Moore, so we got better too.

Now the long wait until 9:30 ish without a trade to find out who we select.

I know we have our needs, but I really hope we stick to our board and take the best players we can and not worry about needs so much. After the draft we can still make a few moves to address needs, and at "cheap" prices as well. If you are going to spend money on a scouting department, and possibly contract with a few free agent scouts or scouting services, then you need to trust that.

Starting where we are starting, the odds are slim we select an all-pro, but if we do I think it is more likely because we trusted our scouting and went with the best player we could select. Maybe he will be in a position of need, maybe not. Selecting some OG isn't going to move the needle of public opinion, but in 3-years, nobody remembers that if the guy is a solid pro we want to extend.

To translate to baseball, and take on something Savage said, we don't need to hit homeruns. As baseball guys, singles and doubles go a long way towards winning baseball games. I'll be happy with a few singles this weekend.

Some thoughts after Round 1:

--Baltimore went from looking like a possible dumpster fire to having Lamar, OBJ, and Flowers. Damn!

--Philly wins the night w/Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith.

--I don't get why Detroit took a RB. They have Swift and Montgomery on their roster. They need defensive help.

--Steelers w/a wise move to move up a couple of spots and grab an OT.

--Texans made a big splash w/Stroud and Anderson.

--Cowboys reached a bit for Mazi Smith.

--Minnesota once again failed to address their defense.

--It was painful to watch the shots of Will Levis and his family as he sat and fell out of the first round.

As for Baltimore, they had Lamar. I never thought he was going to leave. As for OBJ, he has never lived up to the hype since his days in NY. He may have a bit of a resurgence, but I doubt he goes back to being a top 5-10 receiver.

No doubt Philly is sick. Just sick....sick I a good way if you are a Philly fan. Those boys might need to learn to eat some bagels and Philly Cheese stakes, but for those boys Philly might need to put some grits and country ham on the training table.
Posted By: Versatile Dog Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/28/23 01:34 PM
Of the 31 players drafted in this year's first round, 18 of them came from either the Big 10 or the SEC. Both conferences had 9 players drafted last night. Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State led the way with 3 each. That's not surprising, but it's still noteworthy.

It is interesting that you point out the Levis reaction. I hate the draft being this late in the year. There is so much "news" put out and so many rumors from unnamed sources, probable smoke screens from teams and other disinformation. I swear when I first started just poking around sites Levis was considered a risk and Stroud was nearly a lock for #1 pick. In the past week one of Levin's "people" supposedly said he thought he was going number 1 overall to Carolina and then reports of Stroud dropping out of the first 7 picks and maybe being the 4th or 5th QB.

I have always heard of the silly season and this past week certainly it.

As an aside, if I were a GM, I would never tell my true intentions to anyone outside the organization and would fire any employee I found out was doing it. In the past we have had FOs who seemed to let people know what we were thinking and to me that is never good. I feel it leaves you quite vulnerable during trade talks. Anyway, I digress. Hopefully we can get some help during day 2.
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/28/23 03:16 PM
The only team who would have nothing to gain by hiding their draft intentions would be the team drafting at #1. There's nothing anyone can do to stop them from drafting who they want. Otherwise teams should never tip their hand. But then I think that's the very reason we see so much disinformation. Teams leak the wrong information to keep everyone else off track. While I agree with Vers that it was painful to watch the Levis family sitting, waiting and watching. It was hilarious watching Todd McShay giving Mel Kiper a ton of grief over Levis still not being drafted when Kiper had been talking Levis up the entire night. I actually didn't see the kid being first round material but that's just me.

My old hunting buddy lives in Alpena Michigan and is a huge Lions fan. We spoke before the draft and after their second pick in round one, #18. He was beside himself with the Lions picking the second RB in the draft at #12. I told him I wish I could tell him something to make him feel better about the pick but I had nothing to offer. With all the trades it made for an entertaining night. I think the Texans and the Eagles had the best night.

1. I'm far from being concerned with Lamar and OBJ (Injuries waiting to Happen) and a unproven Rookie who will have Lamar throwing to him for a while, maybe?

2. Philly did have a great first round ...

3. I thought the same thing when the Lions picked a RB ...

4. Yes the Squeelers needed OL ...

5. Texans used their draft capital wisely ...

6. Cowboys messed up BIG TIME ...

7. Vikings needed defense ...

8. Never thought Levis was a first Round QB ... And Let me add the Colts also got fleeced by the "Experts" Richardson is not good ... JMHO
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/28/23 05:35 PM
Richardson somewhat reminds me of Lamar as a rookie coming into the NFL. Not a very accurate passer but great as a scrambler. Lamar has improved as a passer but that's certainly not a given for a QB entering the NFL. It's going to be a matter of feast or famine with him. I didn't see the consistency from him at the college level to take that kind of a gamble with him in the draft. Only time will tell I guess.

Will Levis Will Not Attend Second Night of NFL Draft in Kansas City, per Report

After falling out of the first-round of the NFL draft, Kentucky quarterback Will Levis will not attend Friday night’s festivities in Kansas City, according to a report from Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio.

Levis, who was sitting in the green room at Union Station all night on Thursday only to not be selected, will instead spend his Friday night elsewhere. Levis is expected to be picked early in the second round.

The Kentucky quarterback was one of the top quarterback prospects throughout the pre-draft prospects, but was a clear step behind Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, who were the top two prospects at the position entering Thursday.

Once Young and Stroud were selected, it was anyone’s guess who would go next between Levis and Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson. Ultimately, Richardson went No. 4 to the Colts, and there were no more quarterbacks selected on Thursday night.

Levis spent his final two seasons as the starting quarterback at Kentucky after sitting behind Sean Clifford at Penn State.

With the Wildcats, Levis completed 65.7% of his passes for 5,232 yards and 43 touchdowns to 23 interceptions.

The second round and third rounds of the 2023 NFL draft will take place on Friday night, starting at 7 p.m. ET.

Does anyone have an idea who will draft Levis? I think the Seahawks at 37 or the Raiders at 38 could be possibilities.
Posted By: Milk Man Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/28/23 06:38 PM
Titans with pick #41 is a real possibility.
Posted By: PitDAWG Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/28/23 06:46 PM
There are at least a few ideas. Although I have no idea how it will play out.

Tampa Bay is one possibility. Let's face it, their choices at the time are between Baker and Trask. Not an enviable situation to be in at the QB position. And neither are anyone they can rely on to fix the position long term. This would give Levis a season or at least part the season to work his way into the line up. While I have no idea what Tampa bay plans to do, it would make sense they are considering this as an option.

I think you could also look at teams who may not be sold with their current starter or teams with aging QB's looking to draft their QB of the future.
Posted By: bonefish Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/28/23 07:20 PM
When we were in the quarterback market. Man I studied all available quarterbacks.

Breaking down every piece of tape I could fine. This year I barely looked at all.

You can't help but see a little of the top guys. Young looked really good to me. If he was 6'2" or more. They would be talking like he was the second coming of Joe Namath.

Stroud is a big strong viable quarterback. I didn't see much of him but he looked the part. Richardson I saw on the whiteboard with Mariucci. Impressive guy. A physical specimen if there ever was one.

Levis. I saw part of his pro day. He looked very stiff and mechanical to me. I could not put my finger on it but I didn't like him.
I did not study him. I did not really break him down. The little I saw of game tape. He looked uncertain in reading the field.

I think if I would have broken down his game tape. I would see the why he fell out of the first round.

Every year someone gets left in the green room at the draft.

To me they're a sacrifice to/for the media who pump up their revenues promoting these guys that probably had only a small chance at being drafted in the first round.

Heck they tried the same thing with Deshaun Kizer.
Posted By: dawg66 Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/28/23 08:12 PM
I've been watching the NFL network most of the day and some of what they have said about the reasons Levis has dropped are: 1. He couldn't beat out Sean Clifford at Penn St. and Sean isn't being touted as an elite QB, This came from Michael Robinson. 2. Teams saw on tape that he's not the most accurate QB plus he threw 23 ints in just 2 years. 3. It was also reported that he came across so cocky in the interview process that teams thought he was smug and could be hard to coach.

oooh, First IOL goes steve avila to the rams, at pick 36.

... There really should be a, line of thinking that picks twenty eight, to fifty four are the real 2nd round
and every twenty picks makes a round.

thirty seven. Derrick Hall LB auburn to seattle.
kind of an edge rushing Linebacker.

Derrick Hall was a nice pick for Seattle

Could you imagine the Browns getting Trenton simpson DE, and Moro Ojomo, DL, tall about a pass rush gain

How about Jalin Hyatt and Kayshon Boutte, the top 2 Wr imo , ... Mingo probably 3rd.

Mingo goes 3 nine to Carolina

According to the ESPN tracker, pick 83 was a CB from Iowa, taken by Denver. Are you thinking of someone else? At pick 86 they took an ILB from Clemson, at least he is listed as an ILB, Trenton Simpson. Fast , but only 235 ibs.
Posted By: THROW LONG Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 02:46 AM
Yeah Trenton simpson the Tiger from Clemson the player I said, one of the players I said the Browns should trade up for, all the way to 34 or thirty five ish overall.

Posted By: tru_dawgs Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 02:54 AM
DLine is kinda slim pickings...Andre Carter may be an ideal role to split time at wide 9 DE. But he may be there at the top of round 4 as well. Jordan Battle may come in consideration, or even Jammie Robinson in round 4. I do like Coburn at DT, but I expect him to go later. LB was weak this year, and it really recently got picked over.

All 3 division opponents have had really really good drafts so far.
so did Philadelphia
so did the jaguars,,, Houston.
the Browns, ehh, the Titans ehh, the Buccaneers, ehh not @uite, maybe so much.

Most of the LBs with high grades are all smaller guys which we already have in JOK, Fields, and Phillips. I hope we go S next or possibly DE McGuire from Missouri.

Posted By: Homewood Dog Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 03:25 AM
IMO we are a better team after these 2 picks. We got a WR that would have been picked in the top 50 if he didn't get hurt and a DT that will be very hard to move. He'll be solid against the run. Good job so far AB.!!!!
Posted By: HotBYoungTurk Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 04:14 AM
Few guys I'm hoping we may snag tomorrow:

HB Keaton Mitchell - get it done AB!
DE Thomas Incoom
DT Nesta Jade Silvera
DT Dom Peterson
TE Ben Sims
Posted By: tru_dawgs Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 04:54 AM
Would love to add Jammie Robinson or Antonio Johnson at S...Quindell Johnson if we go late.

Sowell and Ivan Pace are interesting LB prospects if either are there at the top of round 5...

Would love RB Izzy at of Pitt...if we wait to round 5, Roshon Johnson or Chase Brown intrigue me. I do like Mitchell more than Deuce Vaughn.

There's still some OT talent if we take that route (with Conlin and Wills injury history, may be wise) Jones, Duncan, Freeland are available...if we go later, I wouldn't mind Ryan Hayes, he's not as good as Runyan (whom I wanted a couple years ago late, and is now a stud for the Packers)

DE..surprised the Northwestern kid is around (I never get his spelling correct) KJ Henry, Horton, Mcguire would interest me... Herbig if we go go late in the draft.
Posted By: Dawgs4Life Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 09:38 AM
One thing you can bank on: Baltimore having a good draft. Hated that they got Simpson
Posted By: bonefish Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 12:53 PM
The Browns draft began with pick number 74 in the third round.

IMO we don't a thing about who we selected. What we think we know today and what we will know a year or three from now will most likely be way different.

At pick number 74 we are not looking at guys who are profiled as first round picks. They are guys who on film might show promise but at the same time have weaknesses.

IMO when you start this late in the draft you look for traits that should fit your scheme regardless of position.

Cedrick Tillman. I am not going to profess I know how good he will be. IMO in the NFL receivers have to be able to make contested catches. The NFL is loaded with corners that were drafted high and can cover. You are not always going to create space. Often when the ball is thrown your way. You have to fight your guy for that ball. Size helps. I like big receivers who can post up guys and high point the ball. Most corners and safeties are around six foot. Being 6' 3" 216 with strong hands helps.

If you didn't trade up with a target player in mind BPA is important. I don't know if he was the BPA. Tillman appears to be a versatile receiver.

Siaki Ika. Last season the heart of the defensive issues faced the Browns faced was gap integrity. Guys who could control designated space. The interior DL got moved away from the play.

Jim Schwartz I am sure in watching the 2022 tape knew changes had to be made. The first guy signed in FA was Tomlinson. This pick is no surprise.
I repeat that I have only seen a small amount of tape on Ika. AB and staff were looking at how this guy fits. What traits does he have that we feel will fit the role we want him to play.

This is a big man. Traits you look for are power, leverage, quickness, and strong hands that can control his blocker.

Ika draft profile from Lance Zierlein:

Slams into first contact with excellent hip explosion and leverage.
Initial punch drives through opponent’s pads.
Good recognition against down blocks.
Will require help to dig him out of gaps.
Power and snap quickness to penetrate and ruin play design.
Adequate initial slide quickness to create viable rush angles.
Shoves and clubs blocker’s wrists and hands to eliminate the punch.
Above-average athleticism for a player his size.

These are traits I believe the staff wanted for the role they envision.

I have no clue if these picks will work out. The staff did their work. The Board played out. These were the choices. I have no grade.

Posted By: Homewood Dog Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 01:17 PM
Agreed and a good post. I think both our picks are fine. Whether they will pan out or not remains to be seen as with all picks. What I don't understand here is all the negativity over them. Give these guys a chance. Our picks are bad and our division rivals' picks are good. We can assess all these picks in a year or 2. Now is just conjecture. I'm willing to give our FO the benefit of the doubt at this point. Also, I'm sure Ika will learn a few things from Dalvin Thomlinson who knows something about DL play.
Posted By: MemphisBrownie Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 01:59 PM
Posted By: bonefish Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 02:44 PM
Honestly I don't think there is anything to be positive or negative about.

Looking at the history of just the first round and we find out that many of the first 32 picks fail.

We began with pick 74.

The staff did their best to prepare for this draft. I think starting in the third round all you can do is hope a few guys pan out.

I think we've done well considering we didn't pick until the 3rd. We drafted some talent with upside that with good coaching has the potential to be starters down the road or at least rotational and depth.

What pick/picks do we have left?

Any names to start looking for as UDFA’s? Maybe Duece Vaughn

Day 1 was a yawner as far as we were concerned and Day 2, I must admit, was uninspiring. We got on a bit of a roll in the 4th round which leaves me believing we have done as well as could be expected. I like the D. Jones and DTR picks....

I'd be REALLY good w/ Ivan Pace. An RB to compete wouldn't be a bad idea either, IMO.

OBR guys are saying a name to keep an eye on is Jake Witt --- OT Northern Michigan
Posted By: Jester Re: Draft Day Thread - 04/29/23 09:21 PM
OT Jake Witt, Northern Michigan

According to Pro Football Reference, Northern Michigan hasn't produced an NFL draft pick since Mark Maddox was selected in the ninth round of the 1991 draft.

He's also the last Northern Michigan alum to even play in the league. He played his last game in 2000.

Those streaks should come to an end this week thanks to offensive tackle Jake Witt.

Witt has a rare athletic profile. He came to Northern Michigan as a tight end, but he was forced to play tackle because of a rash of injuries on the team. He made the switch at halftime of a game against eventual Division II national champion Ferris State.

"After 10 minutes of coaching Jake to play a whole new position, he allowed zero sacks or pressures against the best defensive line in the country," Northern Michigan interim head coach Dylan Chmura told local news station WLUC.

Witt is now 6'7" and 302 pounds. He posted a relative athletic score of 9.8, the 26th-highest score for an offensive tackle since 1987, per Kent Lee Platte of Pro Football Network.

The testing numbers for Witt include a 4.89-second 40-yard dash, a 1.71-second 10-yard split and a 7.44 three-cone time. Not only does he run well in a straight line, but he has the quickness and agility that often translates to line skills.

Witt isn't even projected to be drafted by NFL Mock Draft database, which would be shocking given his frame, traits and potential.

That was a pretty important segment with Rich Eisen and St. Jude's. I lived in Memphis for a few years (shocking, the name says it all) and that hospital has such a weird footprint in the sense I think the national brand is far more impactful than how the local community views the hospital. I lived on Mud Island/Harbor Town along the Mississippi and seconds away from the St.Jude Campus, and I feel there was so much opportunity to promote the hospital, locally. Yet, it never seemed like a priority.

Anyways, It was a great segment and a meaningful cause.

Mud Island? I recently re-watched 'The Firm' and there is the scene with Tom Cruise taking the monorail to Mud Island and being chased. I noticed the monorail is now closed and awaiting funding for repairs in hopes to re-open.

That's interesting to hear St. Jude's isn't as supported locally. Maybe, locally, it's assumed it will receive plenty of funds nationally? Patients viewed as non-local?

This is just an overall take on the Browns draft.

IMO the guy who may prove to be the steal in this draft is Elijah Moore. Technically he is not a draft pick. I consider him our second round pick.

He turned 23 on March 27th so he is the same age as Tillman. His time in NY was a disaster because of the mess that was there.

This guy has talent and desire. He is a complete receiver. He has all the skills. He has pro experience which removes question marks to a degree. There is tape of him against NFL competition. He was targeted. The Browns did their research. They looked at the draft and where they had selections. They must have concluded Moore is better than anybody we could have hoped for.

Tillman is interesting. I have always liked big receivers. Especially when they demonstrate they win contested balls. My opinion is corners are a premium position in the NFL. Teams draft them high and league has many really good corners. You have to have good corners because the passing game rules in the NFL today. Most corners around six feet tall.

Big receivers who can post up corners, and high point the ball have an advantage. If they have strong hands and show they will fight to get that ball.

Throws in the NFL are contested unlike most college games.

The Browns want to become a passing offense and they have made the moves to do that.

Siaki Ika was a Schwartz pick. He is a run stopper.

The rest of the draft are hopefuls. The giant tackle if motivated could be a find.

Overall hopefully a few of the others can contribute.

BIG IMPACT IMO will be Elijah Moore.

Agree on Moore. He’s the only one of our “draft picks” that has the potential to be dynamic.

Woods is on IR. Ruptured Achilles.

Felton should not have a place in the roster. He provides little.
