Any issues you come across following the upgrade, please post them here. I'll use this thread as the general bug tracker.
Things I've noticed:
- 'Likes' are different; not sure I like the new way, but it's the built-in method and our old way was a custom change I'd done
- link to return to top is gone. big green arrow is new
- breadcrumbs and the bottom are gone fixed
- some alignment/visual issues with the categories/forums
On my iPhone, using Chrome, the posts are not aligned the way they used to be. I cant see the whole site.

I don't have an iPhone to try it on, but I'll take a look with my Android.
I'm trying to get file attachments working, but in the interim, if you can find a place to upload a screenshot so I can see how you mean, that would be great.
Also, it looks like it had a problem with the characterset from your browser; the apostrophe got borked.
Damn unicode.
- link to return to top is gone.
There is now a fancy green up arrow on the right that does this.

It should be same as it was, the stylesheet was unchanged. But, it could be off.
The total is white and the new post count is orange.

I don't access this much from my phone, but it appears to be normal on mine.

I think the color scheme was swapped. Orange for overall and white for new.
But I could be wrong.
Quick Quote and Quick Reply is missing.
Quick reply is at the bottom, and huge.
Lot of changes. Some are of questionable value ....... but I am glad to see the user list back out where it is more converient.
I dont have my McEnroe sig pic. Ill need that fixed immediately, if not sooner.
And it seems apostrophes are wonky.

Thanks guys
Dropdown menu is gone? Found it...
I notice the names of posters word wrap if too long.
Wow, all things considered, everything looks great! I'm sure this is a lot of hard work, planning and headache for anyone involved in the switch. Thank you!
Quick Quote and Quick Reply is missing.
The Reply & Quote go directly to the Quick Reply box and it has the option to use the full editor. Makes sense, really.
I notice the names of posters word wrap if too long.
what is interesting to me is that when I first saw this post, yours did not wrap, but then I made a post and after the screen refreshed, when I looked again, yours was wrapped.
I think I can adjust the width of that box in the stylesheet.
If I can help in any way Purp, just let me know.
Purp, if you intend to keep the scroll to top "green arrow" could we kill the visual scroll up? It's just window dressing and a little annoying after a few times of using it.

Thanks, OCD, will do!
I think this upgrade was one of the final preparatory steps. By getting it done before the move, the actual move itself will be a LOT simpler and I can default to using the latest MySQL & PHP versions right off the bat.
As soon as I have IP Addresses (I need to call the guy today and get that nailed down), I can start planning the actual move itself.
Purp, if you intend to keep the scroll to top "green arrow" could we kill the visual scroll up? It's just window dressing and a little annoying after a few times of using it.
I have not looked into any of that, and I don't know what it involves. Possibly just a CSS thing, but I don't know. I'll look into it once we're moved.

Probably has an animation time set that causes the slow scroll... this link will give you an idea of what to look for in PHP or JS:
https://www.codegrepper.com/code-examples/javascript/php+scroll+to+top+of+pageWould either remove the animate or set the time to zero...
Yeah, I just got done looking through it. The CSS only describes the button itself, not any of the animations. The movement is a single javascript call, and I have the function name, but have not looked at the code for it, yet. I'll add it to the list.
Additionally, the new 'Like' system can be turned off, and then editing a template, I can add the old system back in, I think. Either way, it was fairly simple code and I can rewrite it, if need be. Maybe rewriting it to have more than just 'Like' and going more Facespace and having images would be better.
Also, the ads at the bottom regularly hide the green up arrow... so, it either needs to get moved, the ads need to go away, or I need to put the 'Top' link back in.
I notice the names of posters word wrap if too long.
It's just a few weird posters with long names who are affected though.
lol

One thing I have not seen, and maybe my poor old eyes are just missing it .... but if I read a thread, and don't respond to it, is there a wat to return back to the forum in one step? (there used to be thread and forum links at the bottom of the thread)

Yeah, that's the breadcrumbs at the bottom of the page missing thing that I mentioned above. I recall having to re-add it after the last upgrade, too.

So, my guess is that iPhones are inputting text in 4-byte unicode.
This is part of what I expected with the server move, and I believe that I've found the solution, but I cannot enable it until we're actually on the new server. So, it's annoying for now, but it will get fixed easily enough.
It used to be you could toggle an ignored members posts, but that appears gone. May be by design, their is a place to toggle, but it is dark print and does nothing. Also type indicating edited posts is in the same dark print.
Edit: I later found the toggling of posts is possible, on the left if the page loads for longer periods of time. But it is in vague low brightness, not as bright as the rest of the page.
There will be one more brief period of downtime later today. I'll be upgrading the database server.
The post timestamp seems to be in Pacific? time.
Go into your preferences and set your time zone.
Apparently, this is a new thing?
Yep I was also Pacific time by default, but as Purp said you can change this in your profile settings. Though I'll admit it's odd because you get like 237 location options per time zone, mostly NOT in USA. It works just fine. Just found it odd/interesting.

There is a default setting I can set for the server. It is currently set to GMT (not Pacific). I'm kinda torn between leaving it at that and setting it to where the server itself is (Eastern).

This should be fixed now for most screen resolutions.
Small screens may still experience the names not fitting.

Yeah, I've updated it. The more I thought about it, since users can change it for wherever they are, the less sense it made to not just set it to Americas/New York.

I just noticed that you can't "like" your own post any more. A certain poster is going to be upset about that. Good move.

I can turn that on...
This is REALLY nit-picky, but the favicon in my bookmark/favorites toolbar got updated with the switch. This is the icon used for your bookmarks.
It's now a light blue "U" inside a white talk bubble - whereas this used to be a nice little orange Browns helmet.
There are apps to allow you to change this icon manually, but by default it's set by the webpage.
I already fixed that. As your browser refreshes its cache it will get corrected

That works. It just is different than before the upgrade. Ive just been turning my phone sideways on this site.
I've just always turned it sideways on the phone; it's just easier to see with these old eyes, lol
If u ever have the time any chance u can fix the apostrophes and the dot dot dot and I cant edit.
Thank u sir.
Cant delete posts either
Im on an iPad Air, not sure if that matters or not.
I'm trying to get that addressed.
It's an issue with Apple products and the encoding they use, it seems.
The updates I made to the database last night *should* have corrected this issue, but apparently there is more to it, yet.
I'll look into it as soon as I can.
Thanks purp
No rush sir, the way i type and speak its hardly noticeable
I think I have it figured out, but there is a lengthy process running that I have to wait to complete before I can make the change.

I'm $uper @ppreciative of all the effort & expense you put into the site! Where can we contribute? I saw you had to buy a bit of hardware + secure new site; we can contribute to that

Should just do an annual go fund me for DT and put the link at the top of every forum.
Maybe it has been mentioned, but the time is off. maybe that is something I need to correct?
Thanks Purp, the only thing I haven’t tried yet is the …. Let’s see if thats fixed also …

Interesting. What browser are you using?
For the record, it is 3 emojis posted from my phone, and I can view them fine in Chrome on my Windows 10 laptop.
Emojis are part of the extended character sets these days, like special letters & numbers, so any browser that supports those *should* display them.
The emojis show up just fine on my screen. (Maxthon 6 cloud Browser: Chrome-based)
They look good on my iPad for what it’s worth …
I use Firefox and they show up fine.

Didn't there used to be a "Links" button for easy access to Browns.com, The Plain Dealer, and a couple other media sites?
There goes the neighborhood.

It's weird because yours are squares, Graff's are squares, but cfrs poop emoji shows up fine?
I have an Win 7 laptop also. When I use the IE browser, Twitter posts don't show up, but when I switch to Firefox they do. I suppose at some point I'll have to switch to the Win 10 laptop I have, but I hate Windows 10 very much, so I'm avoiding the switch.
Edit: BTW, I see the emojis, but I would rather I couldn't. I'm an anti-emojite.

My guess is that something with Windows 7 just doesn't fully recognize the 'utf8mb4' characterset. I don't know that there is anything to be done about that.

IE security settings on Javascript are probably set too high to allow the embed code to run.
I haven't tried it, yet, but I attempted to put Server 2022 on the new server and couldn't. They cut ties with a lot of older hardware; I suspect they're doing similar with Win 11.
What fresh hell will Windows 11 bring us, I wonder?
Much like the team we all love and follow, it won't be any new Hells, just refreshed and rehashed versions of all the Hells we've known so far.
So while scrolling I noticed one (left side box which includes screen name and info), was wider and started as if there were a tab used to make it wider, so I scrolled up, it was memphisbrownie, and his whole name appeared without the (slide left to right)
and it; s< ---14 characters long some other names 13 characters had the slider, ytownbrownsfan.
Also noticed, the location, (where are you from, location), in Memphis" , was compound worded and appeared to maybe be the reason the box was longer. So, I'm wondering if someone who didn't want the slider in their screen name, if they changed their location of what city they are from, from like, Cleveland, to a version with multiple words and longer scroll, if that would widen their name box and make room for their entire screen name to fit, without the (slider left to right).
example, change location from Snapple
to. Snapple made from the blah stuff
well, you can try it.
Whether or not the username fits depends on the screen size you are viewing from, so you could also just get a larger screen to solve the problem with the added benefit of making everything else more viewable.
I have put in a minor workaround or two, one being that I added NOWRAP to the username which now adds a scrollbar if the username is too long. I just need to take that away. The other was that I actually specified the width of that area as a percentage of viewport width, and that fixes the issue on most all screens, but the simple fact is that on some screens nothing is going to matter and things are going to wrap, so I will likely reduce that width as well, afterall the main point is what's to the right of the username box, not the username box.
It has never had SSL in the 15 years we've been here.
But, that's coming next. There were enough moving parts without dealing with that.
Just throw a free one on it. pm me if you need help/never done one. Glad to help Purp, anyway I can.
And one other (I think crucial) thing you should do is put the political forum on the NO SPIDERS/Crawl list inside a robots meta tag or robots.txt
While I think it helps keep politics out of the other forums, I damn sure wouldn't want Google tying the content to my site FOREVER... you know what I mean Purp.
j/c:
Apologies if this has already been brought up. To confirm, if I want to like a post I have to click "like" and then subsequently confirm I want to like it after being taken to another page? Is this the only way to do so? A two-step process?
I also thought it was weird to require 2 clicks to like a post, but once you're done it puts you right back where you were, so it's not so bad, IMO.
Yeah, that was a disappointing discovery for me as well.
My plan is to disable this built-in Like system and go back to my custom one that we had before. I think that improving/updating it to be more like Facespace with the multiple options is how I want to re-do it.
The fact that the new one puts you back to your post is the only saving grace; it should just be ajax like I had it. Why they would ever implement it the way they did - in 2020/21 - is beyond me.
still seeing a bunch of the symbol, a(with a punctuation mark above it) together with the backwards E that looks curved like an old mcdonalds' "mac tonight" 1/2 moon, --- so those two together as one, followed also by a tiny tm for trademark about where you would dot an I or cross a T, all 3 of those as one character, and it replaces apostrophes, or sometimes other parts of words.

I think it's mostly as an apostrophe.

I don't remember seeing it in my posts, but I don't know how others read my posts, I don't have any strange keys that I know how to use.
Good news it may be disappearing. As I didn't find it once in a thread I looked at for the first time that was new, about walls.
ok, that's "old" stuff. There was an issue when we first migrated, that was fixed (as noted above). If you have things showing up AFTER it was fixed, then we have an issue.
It was fixed as of
this post, which was posted Sat Oct 16 2021 05:08 PM. Posts made between the initial migration and the timestamp on that post will have whatever wrecked up text they had when the post was first created. That won't change. Quoting it in a new post will simply quote the wrecked up text and perpetuate it.
Didn't there used to be a "Links" button for easy access to Browns.com, The Plain Dealer, and a couple other media sites?
There was. It was a custom addition that I need to get re-added.
When choosing a style, I get a 404 error. If I hit back then refresh it seems to accept the style.
I still need to figure this one out. It seems to be doubling the URL it wants to refresh to. Very wonky, but it appears to be a bug in the forum software as I've seen a post on the vendor's support site about it, I just haven't been able to look deeply enough to find the fix. It's likely a quick edit of a template.
It may be the device used, or my device, whatever i'll live with it, I can read around it, but I've found 2 cases of those symbols on posts that originated on 10,23. and 10,25. Either way, no big deal.
If you stumble across one again, post a link to it so that I can look into the cause.

I just checked that thread and all of those characters are fine, so it has to be on your end. Which web browser, and version of it, are you using?
Not sure if this is a bug, but since I was recently alerted to the fact that I couldn't receive any more PMs, since I was over my limit, I went and checked. I had 60 pages of PMs (at 25 per page) sitting there dating back to 2006... it was quite entertaining to spot check what I was complaining about at different points in time.... my daughter, who just started college, was 3 when some of these PMs were written. I had never thought to clear them out. Do we have a limit? And if so, what is it?
There used to be a much higher limit. I lowered it during the upgrade because I didn't think it was a big deal. I need to reset it. I already bumped it up once, but apparently I need to do it again.

Loose nut in front of the keyboard.
Try re-posting without the "?s=20" at the end of the url.
I have no idea, I also don't know if some tweets can be marked as non-embeddable, etc.
Posting tweets works... figure out what is different about the ones that aren't working for you.
What's the url of a tweet that DOES work?
Thanks, FATE.
Good
Bad
I don't think there's anything I can do. They're all identical in format.
All the board does is pass a URL or tweet ID to some javascript from Twitter.
I'd guess that this Scott Dehn guy somehow has things set so that his posts cannot be embedded, or something. That's just a TOTAL guess, however. I don't use Twitter, so I don't know what settings are actually available to a user.
At first I thought something in the machine didn't like all those zeros... obviously that can't be true.
Now I'm thinking that maybe it's because it's an empty tweet. Absolutely no comment or anything -- just a jpeg.
We'll keep watching...

Did you try in K9 Consensus or another board?
Oh it was in K9 consensus.
Question, do you have to follow a member to give that person a like, currently there are likes under the post count, I don't know how they work, but again it's not a big deal if it remains something I don't understand, just a couple of posters I'd like to like, but not comfortable following anyone.
The likes count under a name is either how many likes that person has given to posts or how many their posts have received. I don't know which. I do know that I am not fond at all of the new Likes system and will almost definitely be killing it off.
After using the new like function for a while, the 2-click system is more of a pain than before. I know I'd be happy to see the old system come back.
The screen stretches on mobile.

So... my posts don't reflect EST time and they are wildly early and so is everyone else's I view. Maybe a settings thing?
Disregard. I found my setting were set to another time zone and adjusted. Not sure if anyone else noticed this, but you can change it back to EST/New York Time.
Anyone else keep clicking "Like" when they intend to hit "Reply"? I've done it quite a few times. Could we move "Like" to the other side?

I have done it about ...... 100 times. I also do it when I go to click "quote".
One other minor glitch (IMO). I don't generally use the "Ignore" function, because its easy enough skim past replies from certain posters. But I have chosen to ignore one poster. On those rare occasions when I toggle onto his post to read it, it appears, but in a really dark and hard-to-read font.

I really dislike this new, built-in "Like" functionality and need to just shut it off, but before I do I need to sit my but down and get my old stuff added in. It *should* just work without any issues.... I just need to make the time to do it. I haven't much felt like doing any of it since finishing the server move/upgrade.

I'll try to take a look at this, but if you're ignoring them, then it's probably the way it is supposed to be.

I like it this way. As you squint to read it , you're reminded why you're ignoring them.
BTW, Dave, highlighting the text seems to help quite a bit.
For the ignore feature, I don't see the actual post by the poster, but I'll see that they posted something... then there's a button I can click if I want to actually read it.
Yep, Dave is saying that after you click to read the post it's hard to read. It's pretty dark like the post is "shaded".
Not to wear it out (I know, too late), but you see the same unreadable font color when someone edits their post. You can see it it in Memphis Brownie's edited post above in this thread.

No real answer, but my guess is that you mean you see it flash briefly before disappearing. My guess in response to that is that I expect the image (.gif) that gets displayed when you have a new message is set to be visible by default and is only hidden after the code that checks messages executes. Ideally, that scenario should be reversed. The image should be hidden in the base templates and only made visible if you have a new message. It's likely just oversight as to what makes sense on the part of the developers.

I did that to allow it to be technically readable, but to not take away from what the actual message to be read is. I could probably play around with the colors and brighten them a little bit, but they will never have the same appearance as the body of a message as I don't want them to be THAT visible. They're notational bits of information, not the main information.
Is the follow thread checkbox selected by default when using the Full Editor or have I just been fat fingering it by accident?
I'm honestly not sure and I cannot find a site or user preference that sets it one way or the other.
It really appears to be set by default.
It would be nice if there were an ignore topic button.
If you could look at the title of a topic, and then never have to see it at the top again.
Anyone else having a problem staying logged in? It accepts my login after I check the "stay logged in" box, but if I navigate away from the board and come back, I'm logged out again.

Odd. Since the day it changed, I haven't had to log in once. In the past, it seemed every couple of weeks, or however many number of posts, I'd have to log back in.
Delete your cookies, then see how it goes.

Same here with my phone. But I have to log in everytime I close and reopen a browser on my laptop.
I don't know if you tried anything further, but its all working fine again. Maybe I just needed to restart after expiring site cookies. Thanks.
I did nothing at any point, so I think that expiring the cookies probably worked just fine.
I have no audio on embedded Twitter and Youtube videos. I'm not sure when this started, but it couldn't have been more than a couple weeks or so. The sound is there when I open them on the actual sites, but not in Dawgtalkers.
We have no control over that. DawgTalkers can only display what their embed code sends to the site, and technically, we aren't even really doing anything. They simply give us code that allows them to insert their code/content into our pages. What you see here is just whatever they send; the embed code just tells our pages to blindly accept and show whatever they send. And, really, we don't even play it... the controls and display all talks directly to their sites and not "through" ours; it just displays here. The audio isn't something they even expose as an option for a site to implement or not.
Are the videos perhaps just muted?
I'd try clearing your browser cache, restarting the browser, then trying again.
Thanks. Deep in the advanced Chrome settings I found where audio was disabled for this site. How that happened, I have no idea. No other sites were on the list, just this one. Probably Covid.
Had to be Covid bro. Chrome probably noticed the brash amount of misinformation on this site.
