NFL Draft 2017 Prospect: BJ Bello
April 16, 2017 The Gridiron Crew 0 Comment
Name: BJ Bello
College: Illinois State
Position: Linebacker
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 230

Q: If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?

BJ: Tenacious, Motored, Passionate.

Q: How are you going to train/prepare this offseason in preparation for the draft or other pro opportunities?

BJ: Working on all of my weaknesses. Working on putting up the best combine numbers that I can put up to show off my athleticism and explosiveness.

Q: If you could compare yourself to one current or former NFL player who would it be and why?

BJ: If I could compare myself to one current NFL player it would be Telvin Smith from the Jacksonville Jaguars because he is an undersized linebacker who uses his speed, athleticism, and natural instincts for the game to put himself in the proper position to make plays.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on or look for?

BJ: When studying film, I focus and look for what exactly the offense does and likes to do. Tendencies are very important, but I like to have a good idea of what the offense is trying to do and play off fast instincts. I focus on my match-ups for that week and try to find weaknesses in players that I can take advantage of, as well as how I can use my strengths and knowledge for the game to put me in the proper positions to make plays.

Q: What separates you from other players at your position?

BJ: What separates me from other linebackers in this years draft is my athleticism. My 4.52 40 yard dash would have put me in the top 3 at the NFL Indy combine. My 10’9 broad jump, 4.17 20 yard shuttle, and 6.71 3 cone would have all been first at the combine as well. I believe these numbers show my athletic ability and explosion. These traits as well as my IQ and passion for the game is what separates me from the rest of the players at my position. Not only with testing, but my film and the amount of TFLs I had this past season shows my ability to be able to play on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

Q: What kind of abilities would you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

BJ: I believe my abilities of being a play maker on the field as well as being a major influence off the field by leading my example and doing all the right things are something special that I can bring to a team on and off the field. As well as being a student of the game. Being very coachable as well as being known for asking a lot of questions.

Q: What is your final pitch/sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?

BJ: I came into college as a safety and moved to linebacker my junior year. I have a lot to learn and have not came close to reaching my full potential and playing my best ball. I have the tangibles and athletic abilities to be a special player in the NFL. With my motivation and passion for the game and being coached by NFL coaches, I can and will become someone special and one of the best linebackers in the NFL.

Nacua picked off 14 passes in his BYU career, good for fourth all-time at the school, and returned two for touchdowns.

As a senior, he totaled 48 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss to go along with six interceptions.

At 6-foot-2, Nacua may be smaller than desired as an NFL safety, but his athleticism, game tape and knack for the ball clearly drew enough attention to get him a shot.

At his Pro Day workout in Provo, he ran a 4.50 40-yard dash, benched 225 pounds 15 times and posted a 39-inch vertical leap.

The vertical leap, if done at the NFL Combine, would have tied for 10th among all athletes.

His top performance at BYU came as a junior in 2015 when he picked off Boise State three times in a home game, one returned for a touchdown to seal a comeback win shortly after a signature Tanner Mangum miracle to take the lead.

We should be able to sign any undrafted free agent we want. An agent looks at our roster and sees how crappy it is, so he tells his client that this is his best opportunity to make a team.
Posted By: Jester Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 12:52 AM
Love the Stribling signing. Can't believe he wasn't drafted.

I need to look into Shult
Posted By: Jester Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 12:55 AM
Guess his combine numbers is why he didn't get drafted. Yikes

Browns signed Michigan CB Channing Stribling.

Stribling (6’1/188) made 18 starts in four years as a Wolverine, breaking out as a senior boundary corner for team highs in pass breakups (17) and interceptions (4) en route to second-team All-Big Ten honors. PFF College charted Stribling with an anemic 22.7 passer rating and one touchdown pass allowed in 2016. Stribling proceeded to bomb the Combine, running 4.60 and posting sub-1st-percentile SPARQ results. Stribling was a non-factor in run defense at Michigan and managed five bench-press reps in Indy. He’s a good college player who doesn’t profile as an NFL corner.

Nacua and Stribling are very intriguing pick-ups. Nacua has the instincts to play centre-field, but questions surrounded his athleticism to step up in the pros.

Walterfootball:

Kai Nacua, S, BYU
Height: 6-2. Weight: 215.
Projected 40 Time: 4.80.
Projected Round (2017): 6-FA.
4/26/17: Nacua had a fabulous start to his senior season with some big games in terms of creating turnovers. In 2016, he totaled six interceptions, 48 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss and two passes broken up. Nacua's statline wasn't an anomaly as he showed excellent instincts as a junior. He was a ballhawk in 2015 with six interceptions.

Nacua is a sleeper prospect who could be a steal. Teams graded him as a late-rounder because they doubt he has the speed to play in the NFL.

His pro-day is covered below:

http://www.vanquishthefoe.com/byu-footba...ms-harvey-langi

Ran a 4.5 40 time, which seems more than fine.
10'7" broad jump
15 reps bench press
3 cone 6.84
20 yd shuttle 4.14
60 yd shuttle 11.70
39" vertical leap

His vertical would have placed him 3rd amongst safeties in the combine. His 3 cone and 20 yd times were top 15. He compared well with all safeties, testing wise. Really intrigued - had this guy as a sleepr pre-draft but thought nothing more of it. I really hope he can stick - he can play.

RANKING THE TOP 50 UNDRAFTED FREE AGENTS

https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-ranking-the-top-50-undrafted-free-agents/

Browns got 2,8,24, and 41 on this list.

2. Kenneth Olugbode, LB, Colorado
Big Board Rank: 128
Position Rank: 6

Olugbode broke out in 2016 to finish sixth overall among the nation’s linebackers with an 88.1 overall grade. He flies to the ball in the run game and shows good range in zone coverage, and he should at least compete for snaps in sub-package sets at the next level. — Steve Palazzolo, @PFF_Steve

8. Channing Stribling, CB, Michigan
Big Board Rank: 139
Position Rank: 21

Stribling doesn’t have great athleticism, but had a strong 2016, allowing a passer rating of only 22.7 into his coverage, good for second-best in the nation. He got his hands on 15 passes (11 pass breakups, four interceptions) while allowing only 19 receptions into his coverage. — Steve Palazzolo, @PFF_Steve

24. Najee Murray, CB, Kent State
Big Board Rank: 186
Position Rank: 26

Murray’s 86.0 overall grade ranked 15th among cornerbacks in 2016 as he broke up nine passes and intercepted two more while allowing a passer rating of only 38.4 into his coverage, good for seventh in the nation among cornerbacks with at least 40 targets. — Steve Palazzolo, @PFF_Steve

41. Josh Boutte, G, LSU
Big Board Rank: 224
Position Rank: 13

Boutte had a strong season, particularly a dominant game against Missouri, as he took good angles in LSU’s zone-blocking scheme. He doesn’t create a lot of movement in the run game, but has a chance to succeed as a guy who doesn’t lose often at the next level. — Steve Palazzolo, @PFF_Steve

Any chance they try to make Kai Nacua into a linebacker? He got some size, and ran a 4.8 40, so it doesn't seem like he would be fast enough in the secondary. I don't know much about him, but you would think he would have decent coverage skills.
Posted By: drobs Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 05:30 PM
He ran 4.5 at his pro-day. I think the dude is a safety all day long.
Posted By: cle23 Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 05:55 PM
Oh, I never saw he improved his time that much. Yeah, make much more sense as a safety then. We need the help there anyway.
Posted By: Homewood Dog Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 06:06 PM
There was a time the draft was 12 rounds and I believe 18 before that. There were always some good players found in those rounds. Now they are called UDFA and some of them may stick especially in our secondary. A couple sound like they can play and we sure could use some help there. Let's hope so.
Posted By: waterdawg Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 06:15 PM
Brian Sipe was drafted in the 13th round !
Posted By: dawg66 Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 06:37 PM
And Earnest Byner was a 10th rnd pick.
Posted By: W84NxtYrAgain Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 06:41 PM
I watched a highlight clip for Kai Nacua last night. I know, it's a highlight clip, but it showed a ball hawk. The guy had a bunch of interceptions for BYU. One of the things I've noticed is a lot of H/L clips will show a great play from several angles, leaving a false impression he had more great plays. I didn't see that in the clip I watched. He had enough interceptions over his college career that they didn't have to show repeats.

Philip Nelson, QB, ECU popped up as a tryout for us.
Posted By: eotab Re: UDFA Signings - 04/30/17 09:39 PM
Just so you know he ran a 4.5 40 at his pro day.
How does he look with game day speed the 4.8 or the 4.5?

UDFA LB he won't make it. Special teams yes, and FS yes more possible then LB.

What the heck a 350+ lb guy is doing in a zone blocking scheme amazes me, but watch some tape on this guy. He moves like a lighter guy. He plays too high and needs coached up to learn how to use his size better, but I saw him pancake a few guys almost by accident. With better coaching his power would improve immensely.

LSU offensive guard Josh Boutte signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent, he confirmed via phone call Saturday.

"I'm excited; as soon as draft ended I got a call from Cleveland and they didn't want to let me get off the phone," Butte said. "I talked to the head coach and offensive line coach and they said they really wanted me to be a Cleveland Brown.

"That scheme, their offense and with my physique and style of play, I think I'm a good fit for them. The O-line coach said he got film on me and he liked what he saw. They didn't draft any offensive linemen so that gives me a good chance to make the team."

Boutte played in 44 games at LSU with 12 starts and played more than 600 snaps at right guard as a senior in 2016. He was not a highly rated player in draft projections but had a strong Pro Day earlier this month.

LSU OG Josh Boutte made the most of Pro Day opportunity
Hoping for a late-round chance in the NFL.
Boutte, a 6-foot-4, 351-pound behemoth from New Iberia, La., seized the moment with 28 reps in the bench press, the most of any Tiger, and showed better athleticism than even he was expecting.

Boutte's 5.25 clocking in the 40 was outstanding for his size and is in the middle of the pack of interior linemen at the Combine. He was especially happy with a strong 10-yard split where most offensive linemen are judged rather than the full 40-yard dash.

"Coach Miles always said 'Hey Boot! Never give up.'," Boutte said. "I feel like those words fit my four years as a player here at LSU. And should be for anyone who has doubt on themselves at any point."

Jesus, I remember that in that game. So uncalled for. Not sure I want the guy on the team.

That was a total cheapshot. I remember being pretty pissed off at that guy. I guess everyone deserves a second chance, but man that pissed me off. And i'm not a wiscosin fan or anything, although I'll root for Big 10 over SEC everyday and then some, but that was just uncalled for.

I agree, uncalled for.

That said, I like players who don't like to lose, which this kid obviously doesn't. No doubt he needs to channel his frustration, but I like the mindset.

Yeah, I just remember watching that game this year, and I was honestly pissed off. It ended pretty late, cause I had to go to work on the Tugboat right after, and I was yelling about it to my watch partner and the Captain.

That's one of the plays I remember this year in college football, and man was I angry. I remember thinking the guy should be thrown off the team, and all sorts of bad things about LSU.

Obviously we did but they had our pick Johnson listed as a TE for some reason on the screen.

I'm like...a 300 pound TE??? wow...lol laugh

I remember that play looking really bad, but I also remember thinking the officials did a very poor job of blowing the play dead.

Those numbers good enough for slot coverage or underneath zone? Not "island" numbers, but might be great in some package for underneath press perhaps?

Agreed. That really pissed me off too. But i think there was a whistle, the announcers were talking about it. maybe it was on the otherside of the field. but i remember the announcers talking about it because when they were replaying it over and over they wanted to look for it

Well look at the bright side if in fact he was in the NFL for this particular play he did the right thing in going after the interception return.

Seriously tho bad play and not a bright shining moment. Lets hope he has learned to control his emotions.

Yes, and we can look forward to a major shift in "mindset" with GW running the show. thumbsup

We are talking UDFA here the odds of making the team is slim and it would be Tabor not Williams with his fate in their hands as only through special teams can he get on our roster. I'm of the ilk that Coverage skills is harder to teach a CB than run defense if he makes the team via special teams its up to him to improve his Run D and listen to Williams' instruction.
