aye did you ever read Vance's book called Hillbilly Elegy?
i've seen snippets of it, but i always wonder what white guys thought about that. i say that with all respect, because as i've mentioned in threads in the past, i don't know what its like to be white in a rural area or suburban area, but im aware enough to know that there's definitely some class divide between whites that has some tension but doesn't get talked about, so my view is always from the outside looking in.
like, what did you others think about his beliefs about white america and such?
I watched the movie on Netflix. I would say it resonates with a lot of people. When I go back home in North East Ohio, I see relatives or the people that I grew up around, I hear about a lot of people that allowed drugs to destroy their lives, including some family members. Growing up in those rural areas in the 70s and 80s, there was very little of that stuff. There was alcohol abuse, but not the hard drugs. So, it definitely pulls on your emotions to see how things have changed. It definitely bothers me when I see people on the coasts talk about the Midwest like it is some sort of backwards place run by inbred rednecks. That effects people and makes them angry and makes them feel like the people with the most political power in the country, really don't care about them.
As far as Vance, You can never really know what a guy stands for regardless of what he advertises himself as, at some level, both candidates have to sell a bit of themselves in order to get in the position to even run for these seats. That's just the way the parties work. But, knowing that someone came from a background where they faced similar challenges to the rest of us and still succeeded, makes you hope that they might actually look out for people in those communities.
I actually think both candidates are pretty decent given the choices in the primaries. I was very concerned about a couple of the Republicans that were running. They seemed a little unstable.
