I watched a lot of football yesterday and while one game isn't an indication of a whole season, I wondered what the top players looked like in comparison. For the polls, I took the top 5 from the latest ESPN poll (prior to championship weekend, though the stats are updated).

First poll is just off of the names (alphabetical by last name), no data to back it up. Pick the guy you THINK WILL WIN IT.

Second is just data, no names (I'll post the names after the poll is over.) Please don't "cheat" and look up the players stats, though the data may make it obvious. For the average defense rating, 3 players played division 2 teams, so I put 129 for them (tied with UConn as worst since there's no way to compare...right or wrong). Pick the guy you THINK SHOULD WIN IT based on data alone.

QB 1 - 67.7% completion, 3543 total yards, 42 total TDs, 11.4 yards per attempt, 1.4% of attempts intercepted, average defense rating= #53

QB 2 - 70.9% completion, 4945 total yards, 51 total TDs, 11.9 yards per attempt, 2.1% of attempts intercepted, average defense rating= #70

QB 3 - 70.2% completion, 4702 total yards, 51 total TDs, 9.2 yards per attempt, 1.4% of attempts intercepted, average defense rating= #62

QB 4 - 67.0% completion, 3774 total yards, 40 total TDs, 9.7 yards per attempt, 2.0% of attempts intercepted, average defense rating= #78

QB 5 - 70.6% completion, 4580 total yards, 39 total TDs, 7.3 yards per attempt, 1.5% of attempts intercepted, average defense rating= #66

I won't vote until there are several votes since I know who is who data wise. I think it is a 3 man race, but should be a 2 man race.

Tua or Murray.

If I remember correctly Haskins and Murray have almost identical numbers except for rushing yards. Stats alone I would give it to Murray. The thing is stats alone don’t tell the whole story. Tua stats are no where close to the others but he rarely played in the second half. Also stats don’t tell the whole story when it came to defenses played.

Hey wait a minute, where are all the players from Los Angelas?

The Heisman ceremony is in Los Angeles

and they can't all be quarterbacks, a player other than a quarterback has to win the hesiman.

As I stated, I took the top 5 from ESPN's list. And the ceremony is in New York.

My thing against Tua was accentuated in the game this weekend against Georgia. He went out, and the backup brought the team back to win the game. Is he really that good, or is the team really that good (impossible to answer that question in my opinion)? I'd give it to Murray or Haskins because they are the MVPs of their teams imho, I don't think either team would win as much as they did without those guys. I cannot say the same thing about Tua. For the record, Murray would be my vote.

I agree with your whole post though, and I added the defensive ranking average to try to help people make their own decision.

Haskins IMO is the best QB in America hands down, and not just because I'm a Buckeye fan, he carried this team to 12 wins in the most difficult situations ...

I'm trying not to be biased, but no one played at a higher level considering the circumstance that Haskins.

J/C

Stats do not always predict who the best player is though. Type of games played, circumstances, comeback wins, poise, and overall leadership on the field play a big role in who the best player in college football should be.

Just because a team airs it out more than another team against weaker defenses doesn't mean that player should get the Heisman. It also doesn't mean that they overcame any obstacles or won any big games.

You're exactly right, but I didn't have the time to dig all that info up.

Just for giggles, I looked up current odds - several referred to one particular site's odds.

Murray -190
Tua +150
Haskins +6000

2 others to another site's odds

Murray -160
Tua +120
Haskins +2500
Grier +2500

The others were all either old or linked to other sites (not multiple links to any other site).

To be fair, it's not like his back-up is a redshirt sophomore who had taken 12 snaps prior to that though.. the dude was a 2 year starter who led his team to the playoffs twice.

My thoughts..

- Haskins is set up, by a wide margin, to be the best pro. He should win because if you remove all of the QBs in the discussion, OSU has the biggest setback.
- Tua is hurt by the fact that Bama blew out so many people and he rested almost every 4th quarter and they just ran the ball. Haskins had 200 more attempts than him this year.
- Murray will probably win because the media hates Ohio State.

DC - my point was that the team is so strong, he wasn't needed in that moment to still come back and win (chances are neither Oklahoma nor Ohio State would have won in the same situation). So, does that make him the best player (maybe) or is he a very good QB from the best team (one of the best teams)? If the latter, then IMHO he doesn't deserve to win the trophy. I think he will mainly because he plays for Alabama and in the SEC.

This is going to be early since I'm traveling tomorrow through Sunday. Here's the list of QBs from the second poll.

QB1 - Tua Tagovailoa
QB2 - Kyler Murray
QB3 - Dwayne Haskins
QB4 - Will Grier
QB5 - Gardner Minshew

If I had a vote, it's going to Murray. But I think Too wins.

Haskins hands down ... JMHO thumbsup

the right man won tonight

Could have given it to any of the 3. Dunno how you really differentiate between them, because they were all amazingly good.
