what did you call you father growing up?
Nobody on this one? I just thought it was an interesting question.
I think there's a huge difference between being a dad and being a father. A father includes every man who can produce a child. Many fathers aren't even in their childs life. A dad by contrast is a man who is there for that child every day. A man who raises that child. Many men are dad's of children of whom they did not father.
I called him Dad for about 12 years, then went back and forth between Dad and a-whole for the rest of his life.
Regardless, I loved him very much.
Father/Son relationships can be weird sometimes.
I agree with you, except I usually just say sperm donor... I still have some respect for the term father, but 100% agree with where you're coming from...
I typically call my dad, 'dad'... occasionally I've referred to him as my father when talking to others... but it feels to formal for my dad... I call him papa now frequently because that's his granddad name...
Hard/ a not simple question- societal differences and complicated. Growing up- what ages? Which generation were you born into? Short explanation- I'm a baby boomer- born to a young, WWII veteran, who joined military- he was just like Robert Duvall in "The Great Santini" or worse. I called him- SIR all thru my teens. In later life, when he'd matured and I had it finally became Dad. I'd bet lot of racial and cultural differences too. Good question, all things can be complicated.
Wow, sir never entered my mind. We are similar age. I was one of the few not calling him dad. It was Pop all his life.
I think a lot depends on where you, your parents were from.
I chose dad for this, He didn't want me calling him Daddy after maybe the age of 10. He was from Ohio. My Mom, as I just said here is what I called he when speaking about her to other people, but when talking to her I called her Mama. She was from Alabama and that is what you called your Mama. I called her that my entire life.
My Ohio grandparents were Grandma and Grandpa. The grandparents in Alabama were Grandmama and Granddaddy.
My "dad" passed away on May 3rd, 1973, 12 days after I turned 16 years old. Not sure why, but since then I have always refered to him as my "father".
Called my dad the Big Kid
Called my father dad too and I miss him a lot even after his passing 18 years ago. Anyways, Happy Father's Day to all my fellow Dawg Talkers. Many good people on this board and I'm proud to be part of it.
Called him Dad unless we were really heated, then I might call him anything. I did call him pop, pappy, and old man at times, but the usual was just dad.
