I don't know this player from a hole-in-the-ground. But there aren't many identifiable candidates for returner already on the roster. I don't want Callaway doing it. I don't want Hilliard doing it since some of you suggest he'll be the #2 RB once Duke is traded, LOL. He doesn't have to be Metcalf. What little we see of him suggest he can navigate space well. He also plays on coverage teams which adds to his potential value. To me it's meaningless what he might do as a receiver. We need a guy who can be relied on to return kicks. At this point that opportunity is open for this kid.

j/c...

This is the first time since 1999 that we are actually building a kick butt ST unit.

We picked up several ST studs in our 2nd tier FA signings!!

Let them compete and fight for that roster spot!

Got to love Dorsey...NO PLAN MY ASS!

I want to see how he handles the jump in competition before "annointing" him. Not that you necessarily are doing this.

I'm also not sure the fact that he covered kicks at that level means that he can/will at this one.

As great an athlete as he appears, I can't really figure out why his JUCO didn't try to use him more. I don't think it's meaningless. The more you can do, right? Roster spots are limited.

He could be a diamond in the rough, or he could be a rock that looked shiny when the light hit it just right. Time will tell.

I also kind of like Callaway at returner. His speed has shown at this level, and his hands seem pretty reliable on kicks. He's our 3rd/4th receiver. We also have Ratley around, too.

As far as Hilliard, I'm not sure our backup for the first half of the season is on our roster yet. Could very well sign a vet once their contracts are no longer guaranteed. For example, I think Spencer Ware is still available. Also Duke returned some kicks, why wouldn't "his replacement"?

Basically, I'm saying we're not going to give him a spot at returner based on the tape I've seen. He'll have to earn it over those other guys.

It's just a sign to me that we are actively looking for a PR specialist, maybe we'll draft one, or try to develop one. I would bet Callaway isn't our future PR

I believe we normally carry about 5 or 6 WR's on the final 53.. based on the talent we're accumulating, I'd bet we only keep 5.

So with OBJ, Landry, Callaway, and Higgins, do we give the 5th spot to a guy who's only value is special teams, or give the 5th spot to a guy who can contribute on offense in case of injury?

I think this guy is brought in to take a look. Give him a shot, see what he has in camp and maybe preseason, but his chances of making the final team are likely slim.

Ideal scenario: find a guy who can play STs (gunner, return man) and who can also be a 5th/6th WR

I agree ... I don't see why our 6th WR couldn't be a ST ace and probably be active over our 5th WR? on game day baring injuries. With our top 4 WRs' and all of our TEs' and RBs' ... I doubt that we go 5 deep @WR on game day.

I think just giving Higgins the 4th WR spot is pre-mature ... it appears its his to lose and heís the odds on favorite ... but he could get unseated by Strong, Ratley or even Willies ... donít count them out ...

Hopefully one of them beats him out for the 4th spot as it means were better ... thumbsup

If not, thatís more than likely the best WR room in the league ...

I think the kid has a fighter's chance to be the returner/ST Ace. Of course, it goes without saying that he'll need to earn the spot. What I like about the signing is it indicates we intend to improve the production on the ST unit. Including looking at player(s) whose primary role will be on ST.

As for utility if he only plays special teams? Tell me how many reps did Taviere Thomas get in the secondary last year? The answer? Not many. Yet he was our best tackler on kick coverage units.

We all have our preferences. If we're honest some of them are more emotional than rational.

If Rattley or Willies beat him out so be it. Can't argue that. But Higgins has earned his way into being a contributor in this offense. He rose through the fiasco of the 4 WR draft to be the last man standing. He showed flashes before Baker got here. Then last year he just worked his way up the depth chart by establishing a connection with Mayfield as he also was with the 2's or 3's. The guy is reliable. He contests catches and wins, So those other guys will have to come in an take his spot. I bet on Higgins. Roll out the red carpet.

Hollywood is just solid all around. He reminds me a little of Kevin Johnson.

I think he has the potential to be a #2 receiver in the league.

Beckham ( vertical threat )
Landry ( possession receiver / slot )
Callaway ( vertical threat )
Higgins ( possession receiver / solid route runner )

I really think our WR's compliment each other extremely well.

We look good at receiver. I don't know if the best in the league, but why not?

We are pretty solid at QB, RB, and WR...even TE is pretty solid depending on what Fred wants out of the position. We can go receiver with Njoku and DeValve, or we can go blocking with Fells and Charles.

I couldn't agree more. Anything else is just a cherry on top of the icing on the cake.

none the less, it will be interesting to see the battles ahead for the final roster spots.

Prematurely, l would like to see if Willies, who offers a different body type at 6'4", could become a cherry for the cake.

The improbable story of how little known WR Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi landed a tryout and, ultimately, a contract with the Browns.
A little more than a week ago, Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi was sleeping outside. It was just him, his two bags and a patch of grass in Miami, Florida.

He was spending his nights getting as much rest as he could outdoors, just steps away from renowned NFL Combine trainer Pete Bommarito's facility, where Sheehy-Guiseppi had spent his last $200 on training services. He did so because he had no other choice: His workout with the Browns, perhaps his one and only shot at the NFL, was a week away.

If that doesn't sound preposterous enough, here's how Sheehy-Guiseppi worked his way into a tryout for the Browns: He convinced them he was supposed to be there.

There is a lot more to read to this article..Worth clicking on the link..Kind of got to get behind this guy a bit.

He's a good story. Thanks for posting that by the way. Plain Dealer writers, if they weren't too busy following - and making stories out of- things that baker and OBJ say on Twitter, should be able to dig stuff like this up.

If i'm putting my chips on OBJ, Landry, Wood, and Calloway staying healthy, I'm keeping Damon. He's cut from a different cloth. You can't teach/train that.

We too often use the term "electrifying" to the point of trite and cliche; this runback was precisely that, despite the end of the game, for his cut and runback, and also for the huge celebration spontaneously. A great Browns moment. Hats off to the STs. I want to see more of this kid. thumbsup

Saw the speed open up after his cut, and it was over. Reminded me of Metcalf. His speed is better than eric's I suspect. Keeper IMO.

The difference is that Sheehy is a guy who could excel at it. And when his name is the first to come up when talking to Odell and Jarvis as a guy we shouldn't sleep on...that is a big endorsement for me. They talk about how hard he works as well. I think he either makes this team specifically as a returner or is on the practice squad. But he won't make the team purely as a receiver.

So far...so good...LOL
Right now, I think, in the very least, he is on an NFL practice squad roster come the regular season. SOMEONE is is going to give him a shot and I hope it is us.

IF he makes the 53(still a longshot)...it means either Willies or Strong won't make the team...I think Willies can still be on a practice squad...not sure Strong can. Either way, GOOD WR's are going to be available to the rest of the league come cut-downs...

You know what the best part of his return was for me...It was how much the team was invested in him. When it was heard he was going to take that punt. Guys stood up to watch. It looked like the whole team rushed the end-zone to celebrate. When he was talking to the reporters...he said the FIRST person he saw running to him was Odell...So Odell was among those leading the pack. That tells me several things. It tells me Odell is invested in his team-mates. It tells me of the respect that Sheehy has among the building. It was just great to see the love they have for Sheehy.

It was a great display of speed, but he's going to have to catch the ball more cleanly if he's going to stick. Definitely looks worth trying to develop.

I'd love to see this kid make the team as a special teamer. You can't teach heart, and this kid has it. The team knows it too. These guys are already reminding me a lot of that 2016 Cavs team where the guys just rallied around each other and built each other up. Guys like Sheehy are your glue guys. They show a ton of heart and the team feeds off of it.
