I feel like Berry's history here with FAs, especially when there is an evident 'change of scenery' factor rather than questionable talent, is to put the ball firmly in the player's court. He's not afraid to do that with contract/money.

I think he values the possible upside of saying "we believe in you, we trust in your talent, we'll give you all the support you need, here's the money... now all you have to do is put your head down and do the work".

I think he realizes the real downside is if a player doesn't work out, not that it cost a few million more to watch the player not work out. The risk/reward dictates that it is much more favorable to show these personalities that you are in their corner 100%. Let them reassess themselves, and nothing else, and see if they're willing to give 100% for what may possibly be their last real chance to make a name for themselves.

Just my usual over-analysis. laugh
