There will be people who want to draft Kevin Hogan because he is conservative, big, and comes from a pro system. I will not be one of those people.

Also, David Shaw seems like a perfect fit for the Colts.

Cook has been super impressive.

No doubt that the offense they run will be helpful in transition to the NFL.

Cook plays with great maturity.

I was rather hoping, should the Browns give up on Pettine, that they could convince Shaw to take the job.

I would say there is a 0% chance of Shaw leaving Stanford (his alma mater) for us.

If the Browns really need a new coach, what about Carolina's DC Shula?

Shula is the Panthers offensive coordinator. And I would never want him as my head coach. If I remember correctly, he was really, really bad as Alabama's head coach.

Sean McDermott is their defensive coordinator.

Steve Wilks is assistant head coach/secondary coach

And I'll through in that Ken Dorsey is their Qb coach

Paxton Lynch is really jumping:

Interesting that the Browns are not one of the teams mentioned.

Then again Farmer is the GM.

Listening to Colin Cowherd this morning when he was speaking about Cook. He said he'd talked to a scout and was offered some interesting insight. Appearantly there's concerns about Cook's leadership. He's been a four year player and the QB of a Big10 team yet has never been voted Captain by his peers or coaches. Talk is that runs deeper than just a happenstance.
I'll say this. I'm still a huge fan of his. He doesn't come off as a jerk or a distraction. He's no Ryan Leaf. Maybe he's just not vocal or outwardly demonstrative making him not an obvious 'leader'. Maybe not.
The scout did say that Lynch, in his mind, is the real deal.

Hmm..http://walterfootball.com/draft2016.php

Walter Football has us taking Lynch at 4..

Cleveland Browns: Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis

The Browns weren't in position to draft a quarterback in a previous mock, but they definitely are now - and it definitely helps that there currently appear to be three top-10 signal-caller prospects again in the wake of Paxton Lynch's amazing season.

We haven't spoken to our NFL sources about Lynch yet, but unless he struggles to close out the year, I have to believe that he'll grade out as a top-10 prospect, and perhaps the top quarterback in the class. Even if he doesn't, teams get desperate and reach for players at his position. The Browns obviously need a signal-caller, as Johnny Manziel is an idiot who has no future (or present) in the NFL.

In the 2nd round.. they have us taking:

Cleveland Browns: Josh Doctson, WR, TCU

The Browns have to use an early-round pick on a receiver eventually, right? They can't keep going with retreads.

I would love that draft. It would finally give me some hope. But it will never happen. In the past ten years there is only one player that I wanted that the Browns actually drafted. That would be Joe Thomas.

That's a bit of a stretch isn't it? I'm not convinced about Lynch, his stats are utterly ridiculous compared to his previous years, which makes me wonder if his offense changed, or did the lightbulb suddenly come on?

I think it was Spielman, who during the course of announcing one of Cook's games this year, said he was concerned that Cook had never been voted as a team captain. He said that he was curious as to the reason for that.

It is highly unusual. I would say it is worth investigating. The Browns should fully understand the importance of character or the lack thereof.

Any questions regarding leadership should be looked into?

Earlier I went to the Michigan State website and looked for anything that would bring into question his leadership.

Even though he was not a team captain nothing indicated that he lacked as a team leader.

Still worth keeping an eye out for.

I think he does, because he won't get 10+ mil on the market. I'd prefer that he walked.

He makes $8 million the last three years on his contract with none of it guaranteed. He is opting out to get more guaranteed money. I would guess he gets a contract similar to the one he will be opting out of (in terms of guarantees).

I'd look at Malik Jacksom from Denver too. Denver can't afford to keep everyone on that defense. I bet Trevathan walks and either Jackson / Wolfe walks too.

I'd love if we could get Su'a Cravens from USC. I have no clue where he will play (he plays basically every defensive position), but he is just a guy who makes plays.

It seems odd that you don't want to keep three of our better players in Mack, D. Bryant, and Kruger.

Cook was really good in the second half yesterday. He made some big time plays.

On one there was a free rusher coming right for his grill. He stood tall in the face of the pressure and delivered a strike for a TD.

He made throws into tight windows.

One thing I was paying attention too was his interaction with teammates. There was not much.

I am unsure about what kind of guy or leader he is. But his record is very good. This year I have seen him make all kinds of top notch plays.

He has been the best quarterback I have seen to date as far as pocket maturity and decisions.

I want to really look at Hackenberg. No doubt he fits the bill physically and has the ability to make any throw. He is on a bad team with very little support. Bad OL, no running attack, and poor receivers. Hard to look good when you have no supporting cast.

I wasn't able to watch the Navy-Memphis game. I know Memphis lost, but did anyone get a chance to see how Lynch looked in the loss?

That no-call on the TD where the player ran out of bounds and then came back in to catch the pass was horrendous. He played well aside from a few early mistakes though.

Answering my own post, I watched the Navy-Memphis game. Lynch didn't have his best game, but he also wasn't responsible for the loss. He was less accurate (at times) then in previous games I've watched. He threw his second INT of the year, a bad decision into double coverage over the middle, and he had a second outside screen that he never should have thrown, but the defender dropped the ball. He also threw a screen so low that the receiver fell down catching it for a loss. But he also looked good with powerful throws on the roll and fluid running plays. I didn't see anything bad enough to change my opinion. I don't have the evaluation qualifications others here possess, but I am still more impressed with Lynch than I am with Goff. I still like Cook a lot too.

Being that we are 2-7 and the rest of the schedule looking pretty rough; this may well be the year that we have a chance to get a really good quarterback.

Farmer gives me little hope in finding the best prospect.

In looking at some of the top guys listed including:
Conner Cook
Jared Goff
Paxton Lynch (it has been said he will remain in school)
Christian Hackenberg
Carson Wentz

From what I have seen so far this year Cook has been the most impressive.

There is still a long ways to go but none of the prospects listed just jumps out to me.

Wentz broke his wrist so that hurts his evaluation.

Last year I loved Mariota. Accurate, smart, athletic, leader.

Goff and Cook seem similar.

Hackenberg has been disappointing. He is on a bad team but other than stature he has shown little.

Lynch has tools. He is from a relatively weak conference. They seem to depend on his running ability way to much. He will need time and patience.
