Because many are paid under the table (as you just noted above) - and less it would be if they could legally work. It's not as big a number as you expect, most illegal immigrants do pay state/local taxes (as noted in the first link).

It seems like your two arguments contradict each other...

The Federal form I-9, required in order to hire someone, has a requirement that the employer verifies 2 forms, one that documents their ability to live here, and one that documents their ability to work in the US.

This is not a state requirement. It is a federal requirement.

As far as the last part, there are many jobs in this country that are "under the table" that have nothing to do with citizenship. I would bet that 60% of all local bars have under the table bartenders. Often citizenship has nothing to do with "under the table". However, if you removed that aspect of the equation, you would still have employers who would be willing to pay people under the table. In fact, removing the federal penalties and making illegals legal might even encourage them to pay them under the table. Right now some employers do so, even with the risk of penalties on both sides, why do you expect that they would volunteer to pay payroll taxes and maybe even the minimum wage if workers suddenly became legal?

Back to the debate, and its fallout:

GOP suspends partnership with NBC News for February debate | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ss...ed_cavs_article

NEW YORK — Still annoyed by CNBC's handling of this week's presidential debate, the Republican National Committee said Friday that it was suspending its partnership with NBC News and its properties on a primary debate scheduled for February.

NBC News said it was disappointed in the development and will work to resolve the issue with the GOP.

It was unclear in the letter from RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to NBC News chief Andrew Lack whether the party would forbid NBC from televising the Feb. 26 debate and open up the broadcast rights to others. The debate was expected to be telecast on NBC and its Spanish-language partner, Telemundo.

Priebus' letter also comes amid the backdrop of the individual campaign organizations planning a meeting Sunday to air out grievances about the debate process and suggest changes — a meeting that is pointedly excluding the Republican National Committee.

Republicans were angered by what they characterized as petty, non-substantive questions by debate moderators Carl Quintanilla, Becky Quick and John Harwood designed to embarrass the candidates. Harwood asked Donald Trump whether he was running a "comic-book version of a presidential campaign."

Jeb Bush was asked to explain why his campaign was doing so poorly in the polls, Carly Fiorina was asked why Americans should hire her when she had been fired by Hewlett-Packard and Marco Rubio was asked if he should "slow down, get a few things done first" before running for president.

Priebus said candidates were also promised an opening question on economic matters; instead candidates were asked to outline their greatest weakness. He also said not enough was done to ensure candidates received relatively equal time on the air; Bush campaign officials reportedly complained to CNBC while the debate was going on that their candidate was not getting enough time. CNBC and some of the candidates also argued prior to the debate about its length.

The Trump campaign said on Friday it supported the committee's decision.

"We look forward to pursuing alternatives along with the RNC to ensure candidates are given ample opportunity to outline their vision for the future of our country," said campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks.

During a rally Thursday in Nevada, Trump suggested that Republican debate moderators be required to prove that they vote Republican. "Why should we have these people that hate everything we stand for?" he asked.

Carson campaign spokesman Doug Watts declined to comment on the RNC's decision, but said that Sunday's meeting is going forward as planned.

"Censoring the press couldn't be further from our minds," Watt said. "Dictating the questioners or the questions couldn't be further from our minds. We suggest that they be more substance-based and not gotcha-based, not trick questions, but policy- and issue-based. That's the only thing from our perspective and I believe the other campaigns'."

The campaigns have been fuming over the RNC's handling of the debates, expressing frustrations that they've been excluded from participating in discussions over their terms. The tensions boiled over in the days leading to the CNBC debate, prompting Carson and Trump's campaigns to threaten to boycott unless their demands were met.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials said it was "extremely disappointed" by the RNC's decision, given NBC's partnership with Telemundo. Relations between Republicans and Latino voters were already strained over Trump's comments on immigration.

Telemundo was the only Spanish-language partner for a Republican debate, the group said, and it is vital for the candidates to address the concerns of Latino voters.

While cutting NBC out of the process, the RNC said it still intended to have a debate that day with its other partner, the conservative National Review.

It also remains to be seen whether, barring any accommodation with the RNC, NBC might try to skirt the party and hold some sort of debate on its own.

Debates have unexpectedly become big business for the television networks. The three GOP debates — on Fox News Channel, CNN and CNBC — all set viewership records for those networks. The CNBC debate on Wednesday was seen by 14 million people, more than Game 2 of the World Series between the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals.

Though it had far lower viewership than the first two GOP debates, the first Democratic debate also set a record for the biggest TV audience ever for a Democratic campaign forum.

Just an example. But I think if you get the numbers/percentages mixed right, it's a tax savings for everyone and way simpler and may not reduce income for country. The mix has to be right and frankly, I'm not sure how to arrive at that.

I don't think anybody should be 0. I don't care if you are a kid that makes $5000 a year at a part time job, you should still pay something. Make it 1-2%, but something.

1% on $5000 is $50.
The government would spend more than $50 in collecting and processing and actually end up losing money.

I don't care. We still stamp out pennies and it costs more than a penny to make them. How much does out government spend sending out refund checks that exceed what the people paid in taxes?

I'm glad someone else is at least aware of this fact. The gov't. tries to say we're "19 trillion" in debt, but the gov't. doesn't count the unfunded debt. Conveniently.

Giggling at the "fallout" and umbrage after this one. I think that same media has shown real bias towards the group here. And let's call it something else. Debate can't be right.

Maybe DINO: "Debate in name only" which is directed at each party.

Arch - that's just ONE OF a boatload of LIES WERE BEING TOLD ... its incredible to me what our politicians say regardless of what reality is ... ITS SICKENING .. I am embarrassed to be an American today ... the reasons are many ... a few quick examples .... and I only need to reach into the past month to come up with 3 stellar examples of blatant lies were being told ... and its by BOTH PARTIES ...

IMO if u support one of the two political parties your either:

- not payjng attention and our stuck in your mindset of 20 years ago ... cause what's happening today does not reflect well on either party ..

- your being "paid off" by one of the parties ... another words your getting some type of entitlement from the gov .. be it welfare for us poor folk or corporate welfare or one of the many many other free things we give away to folks at both ends of the financial spectrum ..... or your job is tied to a political party ...

- ummmm ... not sure how to phrase this last one ... but it is what it is ... lets see here ... whats the 'gentliest way I can put this ... OK ... lets try this ...

your not processing the information you are learning about our gov't and there policies and how they affect Us in a logical manner ...

how'd I do??? .. *L* ...

Its crazy Arch ... and sorry if your a diehard on either said ... but I just don't understand how anyone can stick up for either the Dems or the Repubs ..

anyhow .. heres my 3 examples ... and none of these are more than a month old and in no particular order ...

1. The pacific Rim trade deal ... OUR POLITICIANS on both sides (and for the few that actually pay attention and are not talking out there asses ... I know the
dems in the houses were against it ... but Obama was ALL IN ....last I checked ... HES A DEM ... )

So this is a good deal for us and won't cost us any jobs ... really ... then riddle me this batman ... if its such a good deal then why is there EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENIFITS IN IT FOR WORKERS THAT U HAVE SAID OUR GOING TO LOSE THEIR JOBS and will need the extra beni's ..

Ya ... that must be a hell of a deal for us ... ITS HORRIBLE on many levels if u actually look at it and pay attention ... but the "job" rhetoric is exactly what I'm talking about ... the BS is just remarkable ..

AND OUR LOSS OF JOBS (and that's not a problem ... after all there's hardly any unemployment in this country .. its very low .. just look at the #'s OUR GOVERMENT PROVIDES US .. notallthere ...

THE LOSS OF JOBS IS JUST ONE OF MANY MAJOR FLAWS IN THIS "FAIR TRADE DEAL" ... not sure who its fair for but the trade deals we've made over the last 30 years have GUTTED OUR MANUFACTURING job base .... not that manufacturing jobs are important to an economy ...

2. the budget deal .... once again the dems and repubs COMPRIMISE .. and once again we get hosed ...

Dems get basically unlimited spending for their entitlement payments to us poor folk .... and the Repubs get money for Defense and more importantly there entitlement payments to there corporate welfare cronies ...

NICE COMPRIMISE HUH .... the two extremes benefit ... while the majority get hammered ...

once again ... our gov. at work ... all there doing with this budget deal is making things worse ... and seeing as how bad things are now ... that's not an easy feet ...

3. The Iran Nuc deal ... now most will say this will fall solely on the Dems .. well I say BS ... the repubs DID NOTHING TO TRY AND STOP IT BUT GIVE IT LIP SERVICE!!!

they had remedies at their disposal that they didn't take .. and if u want to know what they are anyone ... just ask .. I will be more than happy to tell U ...

hopefully why this is such a bad deal for us doesn't need explaining ... but I am sure some actually believe the BS coming out of Obama's and the Dams mouths ... well if u do ... please go ahead and defend it and I will SHOW U WITH LINKS AND EVERYTHING WHY YOUR WRONG ... that's how confident I am ... I know this subject matter and it is DEFENSELESS!!!!!

and don't bother beating your chest if you are a Republican .. cause they SPEWED BS ALSO ... poor us theres nothing we can do about it ... well unless u READ THE CONSTITUTION!!!!

but u know what ... the constitution is now at best a "guideline" to follow ... its been being crapped on for the last 20 years by presidents .. now this president and our congress have rendered the constitution USELESS!!!!

Well, I'm not going to get into any of that. All I'll say is this country is Greece, but we're not told about it.

We're built, as of now, on promises that can never be met, but we're told "all we have to do is tax the rich more and we'll be fine."

Social security won't be there for me, even if I live to full retirement benefit age.

I know several people just here in town that are abusing disability benefits.

What a bunch of CROOKS!

That's kind of harsh ... don't U think Pit ... I mean come on ... lets look at it like this ...

there's been many a times when half way through the month I knew I was going to come up short on my mortgage payment of 750 ... I vividly remember one month when on the 15th I had 400 of the 750 that was due the 1st of the month .... and I was only expecting to bring in 150 more ... so that was going to leave me 200 short ...

well the next day one of my friends called and wanted to know if I wanted to go skiing ... that was about a 100 dollar outing at the time ... so I did what any smart, intelligent, logical person would do ...

I took the 100 our of my mortgage money and decided I would figure it out over the next two weeks even though I had NO MONEY COMING IN OR ANY CLUE HOW I WOULD PAY MY MORTGAGE ....

that's not a smart move bro???? ... *LOL* ...

its INCREDIBLE ... and I know u know this ... its not even close to the 1st time ... SS has been ONE of the bailout places our fed gov has gone for years to bail there IRRESPONSIBLE ASSES OUT!!!!!

like I asked ... any gov employee at any level ought to be real worried about there pensions ... I would bet anything that the pensions are not even close to fully funded at the federal level and the states are on a state by state basis ... but A MAJORITY HAVE DIPPED IN ... I'd be STUNNED if at least 35 states have not dipped in ...

U know .. I think there's maybe a handful of states that aren't in the red fiscally ... anyone know??? ... and please don't make crap up .. if your not pretty sure of what your going to say please don't say it .. THE MISINFORMATION IN THIS COUNTRY IS WAY OUT OF CONTROL!!!

so I'm guessing most have dipped in to there state employees pension funds ...

I hope all is well Pit ... WOOF WOOF!!!

Why are republicans claiming the debates are unfair.

Do they feel "entitled" to only answer softball questions because they're conservative candidates?

It seems they're a big part of what they call the "wussification" of America.

i like how obama grilled them on that.

they standing up there, talking all big and tough about putin, can't even handle some cnbc moderators without sounding like a bunch of babies.

i've never seen that from presidential candidates before. they stand up there crying about PC. they get super offended over everything.

they'll say super offensive stuff, then cry when it's done to them.

That was great. A rebuke from the guy that's been crying about fox news for 7 years. The same guy that's had the liberal media fawning over him for 7 years. I think the only tough interview he's ever had was with Brett Baier, and Baier didn't ask any 'gotcha' questions.

How does 'is this a clown presidency', 'your economic plan doesn't add up', 'would you like to say something about your opponent' equal debate worthy questions? Why can't it be, 'In 5 minutes or less, please explain your economic plan', and let every candidate answer the same question. That's they stuff I want to hear, not comments from one candidate about another candidates looks.

When has obama stood up to putin? When he told medeved to tell putin he's have more leeway after the election? When the administration was surprised about the invasion of the Crimea and Ukraine? When they were surprised about the Russians attacking the guys we've been kind of financing in Syria?

Carson might be the stupidest educated man on earth. It's scary.

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ben-carson-pyramids

GOP frontrunner Ben Carson, in a 1998 commencement address, floated his own personal theory that the pyramids in Egypt were built by Joseph -- the biblical patriarch known for his coat of many colors -- to store grain, Buzzfeed reported.

In the speech -- given at Andrews University, a school with ties to Carson's Seventh-day Adventist faith -- the neurosurgeon shot down claim that aliens had built the pyramids. But he also disagreed with the archaeological consensus that the pyramids were constructed as tombs for the pharaohs.

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,” Carson said. “Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain.”

In the video surfaced by Buzzfeed Wednesday, Carson goes on to lay out his argument that the pyramids were constructed for grain storage.

“And when you look at the way that the pyramids are made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they’d have to be that way for various reasons," Carson said. "And various of scientists have said, ‘well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that’s how-’ you know, it doesn’t require an alien being when God is with you.”

by your logic, when has the GOP stood up to Obama? y'all cry that he does whatever he wants.....but you don't do anything about it.

y'all can't even stand up to obama. weak mentality. your candidates might want to grow a pair first.

No, they never asked him to explain his plan, they told him the numbers didn't add up and wouldn't work. No explanation from the 'moderator' of how she got that conclusion, just that it wouldn't work. Carson was more accused of not knowing math.

Why the hell is a 'moderator' giving an opinion in a debate? Aren't they there to ask questions keep time?

There are a few who have. Carson did at the prayer breakfast when he condemned obummercare. That's what started his political career. Cruz has throughout his career. The sycophant rinos in congress don't, as they're afraid of being blamed for shutting down the government. Times are going to change soon, if you noticed the elections this week.

QUICK: Dr. Carson, let's talk about taxes.

You have a flat tax plan of 10 percent flat taxes, and -- I've looked at it -- and this is something that is very appealing to a lot of voters, but I've had a really tough time trying to make the math work on this.

If you were to took a 10 percent tax, with the numbers right now in total personal income, you're gonna come in with bring in $1.5 trillion. That is less than half of what we bring in right now. And by the way, it's gonna leave us in a $2 trillion hole.

So what analysis got you to the point where you think this will work?

************************************************
So you're saying he's entitled to a more specific math based question when it's his math that needs to be explained?

He thinks this is a gotcha question!?

Until she reveals how she came to her conclusion, yes it is. If she figured up her numbers with a static economy, where all the employment and business profit numbers stay the same, then her math is flawed. If she did not figure in any reduction in government expenditures, her numbers are flawed.

you keep side tracking.

the point is, for all the no nonsense, tough talk y'all try to sell to the american people, you still haven't done anything worth a damn as far as standing up to obama.

Hell, say what you want about hillary, but she took an 11 hour drilling without breaking a sweat.

you guys can't even handle a 2 hour debate. your gop politicians remind of an 11 year old girl who stomps to her room when she doesn't get her way.

nothing is gonna change, but she's gonna let everybody know she's frustrated.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

So you're saying he's entitled to a more specific math based question when it's his math that needs to be explained?

He thinks this is a gotcha question!?

Weak

Maybe if you put up the entire conversation:

BECKY: Dr. Carson, let's talk about taxes. You have a flat tax plan of 10 percent flat taxes. And I've looked at it, and this is something that is very appealing to a lot of voters, but I've had a really tough time trying to make the math work on this.

If you were to take a 10 percent tax with the numbers right now on total personal income, you're going to come in with bringing in $1-1/2 trillion. That is less than half of what we billed bringing in right now.

And, by the way, it's going to leave us in a $2 trillion hole. So what analysis got you to the point where you think this will work?

CARSON: Well, first of all, I didn't say that the rate would be 10 percent. I used the tithing analogy.

BECKY: I understand, but if you look at the numbers, you probably have to get to 28 --

CARSON: The rate is going to be much closer to 15 percent.

BECKY: 15 percent still leaves you with a $1.1 trillion hole.

CARSON: Let me finish. You also have to get rid of all the deductions and all the loopholes. You also have to do some strategic cutting in several places.

Remember, we have 645 federal agencies and subagencies. Anybody who tells me that we need every penny in every one of those is in a fantasy world.

So, also, we can stimulate the economy. That's going to be the real growth engine, stimulating the economy, because it's tethered down right now with so many regulations.

BECKY: You would have to cut government by about 40 percent to make it work with a $1.1 trillion hole.

CARSON: It's not true.

BECKY: It is true. I looked at the numbers.

CARSON: When we put all the facts down, you will be able to see that it's not true. It works out very well.

BECKY: Dr. Carson, thank you.

I know it won't change your mind at all, but when the moderator is telling the candidate his plan won't work, without any proof, than the entire question is little more than bunk.

It is a given now that any one of these Republican Candidates can take down the Bag Lady in a National Election, I just can't figure out which one it will be!

With the Republicans, our next President could be...

Americas first Woman President,

Americas first Hispanic President or,

Americas first African American President!

Now don't go bothering me by saying Obama is Americas first Black President because I can tell you to your face the guy in the White House is certainly no President!

I thought bill clinton was the first black president. He said so himself, and the media congratulated him for it.

Erik, you're wasting your time. I like a lot of these other Dawgs, even when I don't agree with them. Having said that, anyone saying that the candidates were crying about the moderators being "unfair" and that they couldn't "handle" them are living a delusion. The candidates took issue with the fact that the moderators weren't actually asking any policy questions and the overwhelming consensus by just about everybody in all spectrums was that the moderators did a crap job and got owned by the candidates.

Anyone not operating under those 2 factual premises aren't capable of seeing reason on this topic.

No, none of that changed my mind.

You want her to provide her math, but, the fact is a lot knowledgeable people who have objectively looked at his flat tax came to the same conclusion. Shouldn't he explain?

Drastically cutting the government and regulations and sticking to the failed idea of stimulating the economy has been the same policy that conservatives have dug a rut into forever and because of the question he presented that information as part of his policy.

Seems like an effective question to me. Not sure why he later had an emotional melt down under the pressure of media questions.

What if she had asked him how much grain would fit into 1 Egyptian pyramid.

What a laugh. Which knowledgeable people? The liberal shills objectively looked at his tax plan? I guess we should have all believed hillary when she said the video caused the Benghazi attack. Those moderators were anything but knowledgeable or objective.

Well this liberal fishrag had an opinion, but all those Obama lovers at Forbes are just going to criticize Carson for anything. Maybe it's a racial thing though.

Flat Taxes Are A Nice Idea But Ben Carson's Version Simply Doesn't Add Up

For a party that suggests people have themselves to blame for not being able to handle adversity to whine and cry about questions is more than lame.

Ever since Palin showed her intelligence there's been a relabeling of stupidity as being nothing but attempts to answer unfair gotcha questions.

So, do you think someone should have asked him about the real reason why the pyramids were built or would that be another gotcha question?

His opinion is just as good as anyone else's. The pyramids were definitely not tombs.
