Is Starbucks a public or privately owned facility?

How is deciding to not put Santa, snowflakes, reindeer or ornaments on a cup removing a religious foundation?

How much foundation is required for you to realize you control your own religious foundation?

Is your faith so weak that if Starbucks' only changes the color of their cups then how religious can you be?

If we're talking delusions.... cool

Go back and read slowly...I realize you got your giddy progressive panties in a bunch thinking "I have a gotcha moment"....but he did say it was a horrifically bad example.
I don't know, but I've read and reread to figure it out what the heck your talking about then I figured you probably gotcha panties on your head.

If you look through your frilly pink lace it says this "thread" is a "horrifically bad example" of the "concerted effort to remove the religious foundation of Christmas from public places".

Not sure what your panties might be full of that you can't see, but I don't think it's progress.

Since y'all are arguing over what I said, let me clear it up.. yes, I said this thread is a horrific example.. to be more clear i should have said the topic of this thread, aka, the Starbucks cup... is a horrifically bad example. It's a non-issue with most people. The only people really concerned about it are a small percentage of Christians, those appealing to that small percentage to get a rise out of them, Starbucks who will make money, and the media who gets clicks for making a much bigger deal out of it than it actually is.

It might be a non-issue with most people, but most people are tired of being told how Christmas should be celebrated and that somehow not celebrating in the precise way expected indicates an attack on Christians.

Before Christmas comes there will be the obligatory complaint that mangers aren't in front of city hall, in spite of the fact you can probably see plenty on your drive there.

It seems that if every public space doesn't have a manger then Christians need to run for the catacombs.

Give it up. smile

So we have a student pastor in Florida, and a British politician who have a problem with this.

So how did this even become a story, and why are you making it more than it is?

Maybe, had Starbucks been forced to make this change, it could something to discuss. But since they chose to do this on their own, it really is much ado about nothing.

Oh and I looked through images of their last few years of cups, and they are winter themed, not Christmas themed. The only thing Christmas I found was a Christmas blend coffee flavor. The closest thing to a Christmas cup I found was one with an nondescript ornament.

That's what I'm wondering. I don't recall seeing hundreds of thousands of Christians gathering to protest this. It seems to be a small group and the media turned it into a big deal. Makes me think something else is going on and this is being used to distract people.

This is what happens when the past years have had continual complaints about "Merry Christmas" and mangers.

Why? Do you get upset when people make an issue out of Christmas stuff? wink

Nope, I don't really care if someone likes or dislikes Christmas. I won't protest a Jewish restaurant putting up a Menorah, or an African person putting up a Kinara, or whatever.

I would expect the same in return, to not be harassed if I put up a Christmas tree or wreath. As far as government buildings, I think that should be up to the people in which it governs.

I think it is ridiculous that we have a reached a point in which if someone says Merry Christmas to someone that doesn't celebrate that they could sneer or complain. Just smile and nod and move on.

MUSLIM TRUCK DRIVERS REFUSE TO DELIVER BEER, GET $240,000

'Everyone has a right to observe his or her religious beliefs'

Two Muslim truck drivers were awarded $240,000 by a federal jury in Peoria, Illinois last month after they were fired for refusing to deliver beer because they claimed that doing so would violate their religious beliefs.

Private business doesn't want to make a cake for a gay wedding because of your religious beliefs? Get sued out of business, publicly ridiculed, pay 6 figure fines for violating THEIR rights.

Private employee doesn't want to deliver beer for your employer because of your religious beliefs? Sue, get praised, win 6 figure settlement...

At least we are consistent.

there will also be the obligatory complaint that some small town's decorations have some semblance of a religious theme. It probably won't come from somebody in the town mind you, it will come from a do-gooder who sees it on FB that lives 4 states away and decides that he needs to stand up for the oppressed in this town he's never heard of or been to, all of which have no problem with it. this person will be viewed as a defender of the constitution.

Ever wonder why it seems that way? I'll give you a hint.. it's not because of Christians in general.... I'll give you a hint, it's a 5 letter word that starts with an M... and they make a living by stirring crap up and making a mountain of controversy out of a molehill of an issue.

I moved to a suburb of Nashville a couple of years ago. At the grocery store and most all places you shop, the vast majority of the time at the check out counter, the cashier tells you to have a blessed day. During the Thanksgiving holiday, it's Happy Thanksgiving. During Christmas time it's Merry Christmas.

I know that it may not be that way for the majority of the nation, but it is here and I love it!

I agree. Fox kind of started all this and I think this reaction is just a little statement of resentment.

What consistency are you looking for? Do you want employees to be subject to the same laws as businesses? I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here, other than the overdone obvious one.

The fun part of the story:

However, Star Transport went out of business earlier this year and it remains unclear how the former truckers will get their money.

Number of people upset about Starbucks cups: 20,000
Number of people mocking them, creating memes, making videos, and keeping it in the news, thus making it LOOK like it's a big deal: 200,000,000

You folks love your strawmen, I'll give you that. Star Transport conceded that they had every capability to accomodate the civil rights request. Easily I might add, because they often swapped loads between drivers. Had Star Transport been able to prove that swapping the loads would be difficult, then I would agree with everyone here that Star Transport should have won.

But you folks are arguing that if I was jewish or muslim and wanted to practice a religious holiday, and a Christian was able to take my place that day who didn't practice and therefore would be able to work, that my boss could say no, either show up or be fired. I swapped days with people all the time as a cashier working part time, I'm not sure why it's offensive to the three of you?

But hey, go ahead and say that cashiers swapping time card slots is the same as starbucks cups or cakes. saywhat

I read the entire article on the complaint made by the 2 muslim guys. I don't think it's right those guys were fired, but you've implied that people should leave their religion at home when they go to work. If they were working for an alcohol distributor, that would be one thing, but they didn't. I trust the ruling of the courts on this one.

I worked with a guy with a distributor company that sent foods to military bases. He became a Jehovah's witness, and quit soon after that. Something about being a devoted pacifists. If he would have expected a paycheck or payout once he changed his views, he'd be in the wrong.

Let me ask you this, if you're a Jew and want off Jewish holidays, and the company you work for takes typical government holidays (like Christmas), should you have to take a personal day for Yom Kippur?

Every year at my company we lose another vacation day but we gain a diversity day. Same number of days in the end but just employee choice instead of company mandated.

That's a good way, depending on the business. As my company makes a lot of sales calls, you don't get sales on Christmas. The business is closed on that day. It's not like they've ever stopped anyone from taking off their personal religious holidays, but those come out of personal leave.

Well, seeing as so many states (Maryland, New York, Vermont and others) have school districts that are now closing for Muslim holidays, you could most likely just give everyone a Muslim holiday off. Diversity day indeed.

Problem is schools are calling them student diversity days, seasonal breaks etc.

All this but do not pray in the schools, do not celebrate Christmas, Halloween, Easter etc. What a shame. We have permitted this country to go down this path without so much as a whimper. We are weak.

There have been nothing but whimpers and whining, but those who believe in the constitution held strong those invalid complaints.

I'd appreciate a quote from me on this if you please. I may be anti-religion but I can't recall saying anything you're claiming I've said...

It depends on the job site, IMO. I think a person should be able to get Yom Kippur off if they can swap it for another holy day like Christmas, without using PTO. But some jobs straight up close on Christmas, so it may not be feasible to have them work on that day. We all have to make tough choices on things we love. For some it's Yom Kippur, others Ramadan, for yet others it's the Rose Bowl smile

It does get murky with elected officials as they are considered employees by some statutes and not others. But heck many people would have been fine with Kim Davis protesting had she allowed other workers to sign gay marriage certificates. The big issue in that case was her not allowing anyone in the county to get marriage certs period.

You're treating this too black and white. There's a big difference in swapping loads with someone and shutting down an entire department.

Yes, it's much easier for a 365/24/7 company, but mine does not open on Christmas. There is no option to work, so it's a PTO day.
