I agree with you on Farmer, and I also think many others do to, but this defensive scheme is horrible. You have said it before, about how they have always struggled against the run. But as far as Pettine is concerned, there is a problem. The defense was slightly better when he was more involved, IMO, he is giving O'Neil too much leeway.

The problem, as I see it, is if you have to get rid of O'Neil, what then? This is Pettines defense, if a new DC is brought in, I believe it will only be if he runs Pettines defense. There lies the problem.

Getting rid of Sheard, Winn, and yes Skrine, has weakened the unit. That is on Farmer. I saw Rubin play this year, and he's still good. Farmer's stubbornness in not drafting a TOP wr, is haunting him now. Hawkins and Gabriel both have concussions, who's left?

I will say that Farmer has really screwed the pooch, and can't be fired soon enough. But if this team keeps this defensive scheme, nothing will change. Therefore, the calls for Pettine to be let go.

I honestly have no idea who they could get, but even another flip, couldn't produce a result as bad as what we are seeing.

IMO, this defense and it's coaches are what is killing this team.

i agree its petts d therefore he must go to. We brought him in to have the D be the focal point of the team. Its an epic failure.

I believe the stadium should be void of Browns fans on November 30 from 8:00 - 11:00PM.

Name a good coach. How would he do with this team? I think a hell of a lot better.

You can even leave Bill out, since he will go down as one of the top 2 or 3 coaches in the history of the game.

Nobody is turning this group into a playoff team, but 2-8 in unacceptable.

Everyone has talent in the NFL. I don't care about the offense, the fact that we have a bunch of undersized receivers or that the QB position has been a carousel once again.

The thing I care about is that we are the worst defense in the league. We are dead last against the run. We were dead last against the run last year.

Our guys commit stupid penalties, the defensive backs don't get turned around. They have pass rushers trying to play coverage.

That's all on Pettine. It's on O'Neil, but O'Neil is basically Pettine's shadow. He's a horrible coach.

Too many people try to make the comparison to how college football works. The Browns are not Vanderbilt compared to Alabama, or Purdue to Ohio State. The talent differential in the NFL is not even close to how it is in college. The Browns are clearly not as talented as other teams, but it's not as much as people think. Mike Pettine is 3-14 in his last 17 games.

I didn't expect playoffs this year. I think most were in agreement that it's just not feasible with where we are. But development, and progression, and improvement is to be expected. And, fairly at that. I don't see improvement in anyone.

I totally get that Farmer has whiffed on picks, and guys didn't turn out like he expected, but a good coach makes the best of what he has, and I don't think Pettine has done that at all. There's no excuse for being dead last against the run two years in a row, regardless of how horrible Ray Farmer has been.

That's a nail in the coffin for him, if you ask me. Defensive coach who's teams are worst in the league against the run. Nice knowin' ya, Mike.

Spergon.. once again I saw Pet all alone on the sidelines...and the steeler coaches all huddled together..

I saw Pet go to high five a player and they just wlked by him..

I saw Steeler HC hugging players..

It would never happen, but that would be a hell of a statement.

I can't get beyond this today:
Browns
Penalties 12-188

Really? Are you kidding me? What a joke.

Manziel and Gilbert both didn't adjust to the NFL well in their rookie seasons, both had off field issues.. I wonder if that has anything to do with Pettine's inability to ever try to get either on the field.

Yes, Pettine gave up on both guys and doesn't have the desire to try and develop them, IMO.

Pettine strikes me as not wanting to deal with immaturity, but part of being a coach is dealing with young, immature guys. Once Pettine has labeled you, I think you're done.

Post-game thought:

I'm at the In-Laws this weekend to celebrate my M-I-L's 90th (!) birthday. She's been in a rehab center for almost 2 weeks, recovering from dehydration and a series of falls in the home. We 'busted her out of stir' yesterday to have her celebration. In the meantime, my Pops-In-Law was admitted to the local hospital to treat an A-fib attack and fluid in his lungs. He was released this afternoon. We busted Miss Nancy out again today, so they could spend some time together in the home they've shared for over 60 years.

So... the game was on, but I was in and out of the TV room all day.

It was the best (or least painful) home-based Browns experience I've had in a great long while (I always have fun at games, win or lose...).

I think I've found my new level of Browns fandom: apathy, expressed as passive engagement. If I heard the announcer's voice raise, I'd peek in to see what was happening. If I took a break from doing little family chores or assisting in the kitchen, I'd watch a series of downs.... and then leave. With no reservations whatsoever.

Damn, it's nice feeling.... kicking a decades-long addiction.

I'm happier, not drunk, and in a relatively decent mood tonight.

Thanks, Mr. Haslem... you've managed to do what no 12-step program probably could. You've detoxed me from an addiction that was harming my health, ruining 1/7 of my Autumn weeks, and sending me to an early grave.

Maybe I'll resume 'mainlining the Brown' again when (or if) your sorryass pathetic version of an NFL football team ever becomes worthy of my time and attention... but for now, my life is better with only about 45 (real-time) minutes of your 'product.'
2 weeks from now, I'll see how good I feel with only 30 minutes of exposure. Think of it as "Methadone treatment For Dawgs."

Damn, that felt great.

I thought Manziel looked sharp today . If Pettine doesn't name him the starter Pettine can hit the muthaeffin bricks

It is certainly a hard question to answer, is Farmer missing on picks or is Pettine not getting what he could out of these guys?

Gilbert definitely isn't living up to his college highlight reel that's for sure.
Sheard sucked in his highlight reel and completely outdid it his rookie year…aaand now he's playing for the pats.

Another question, why did we let all those D-linemen go? I thought we'd have had an incredible rotation and then Farmer 'cleared the way' for what?

WE DON'T NEED A QB BEFORE WE GET A LINE THAT CAN PROTECT HIM

Hard to see what we have in Manziel when Cam Erving is a turnstyle. OMG he is bad.

And this is something that I was so surprised not to have seen mentioned in this thread. He played terribly!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

This always bothered me. Thru camp the talk was all the depth on the Dline. Season starts, and I figure one or two let go, but no, they clean house of some of the better players to fill with prospects. It's baffling. Then they keep a thousand DBs, most of who are nothing but ST guys.

All they had to do was look at last year. We started out the same, lots of depth at Dline....then the injuries hit. Why in the hell didn't they learn their lesson. It wasn't very smart to let Rubin, Sheard, Billy Wynn and even Kitchen go. Phil Taylor I can understand due to the bum knee.
